25 Classic Foods From The 1980's That Faded Into History
Anyone else notice the 'pinch' of salt going in the cornbread?
The baked beans are still such a great side too.
The wacky cake was made at my house often especially for lunch boxes 🤗 sometimes in a pinch when you had to bake a cake when a neighbor passed away, or a nice birthday cake too, homemade frosting too.
Godfather pizza is still in business
My family’s from Pa. And I’m in my mid 60’s from a farm family, on cold mornings we had corn meal mush for breakfast (I hated it!!) what was left over was put in a bread pan put in the fridge and cut and fried for supper with syrup
Great memories in the 1970's when my parents would treat the kids to Ponderosa on their payday.
This video is BS. A CROCK!
Who in the hell had milk eggs, and sugar to make bread pudding?
Half of these are still common on our British table. I had beans and toast for brekkie. But I'm grateful for my great-grandmother's WW2 stories and recipes, they came in handy over the past 4 years in America.
1. There's one Druther's store left, it's in Campbellsville, KY. Not too close to Louisville. I'm not sure if it's the same or anything. 2. I think "quick service" is still business terminology today?
Ouch!
My parents lived during the depression and I remember my mother serving scrapple for breakfast in the 70s/80s. It was the absolutely worse thing I've ever eaten. I couldn't believe anyone liked it, let alone ate it. I'm familiar with most of the other items shown in the video: bread pudding, baked beans, potato & onion pie, and oatmeal meatloaf. As a kid, I never understood why anyone would ruin meatloaf by putting oatmeal (and sometimes corn flakes) in it. I remember having to put a LOT of ketchup on it to make it palatable. And we never had any fresh vegetables...everything came out of a can. And the worst was creamed corn. Good lord was that awful.
Fun Fact: The actress who played Queenie Bee in Burger Queen ads was a close friend of my sister. Her father was also an actor who appeared in Louisville TV ads for various local businesses. Another fact: Mitch McConnell was on the board of directors of Burger Queen. The company president, George Clark, ran for mayor of Louisville as a Republican in 1981.
I do miss burger chef. My memories of sambos was the 2 weeks i worked there as a dmo...dish machine operator...cleaning bathrooms...what a joy 😅😅😅😅
We've gotten away from comfort food. Everyone has to take decades old recipes and add all kinds of weird exotic stuff to it. While sometimes it's ok, and would be much better to give it a new name. Far more often it's fancied up to unrecognizable goo with a ole fashion name that some want to eat so they can be viewed as fancy uppity people.
My maternal grandparents knew how to make food stretch, meal after meal. Cabbage soup and rye bread was for supper three to four days a week. If my great grandmother killed a chicken, the seven children (and their growing families) got a piece each from that chicken. My grandmother would make chicken soup on Sunday, and the family would all surround the soup pot on the table and inhale the chicken aroma. Everyone got a sliver of chicken to satisfy them. My grandfather went out foraging in the woods for mushrooms, edible berries, and whatever he could find. A lot of bartering for food also went on. My grandmother was adept at sewing, so she did hemming of clothing, reconfigured clothing by taking it apart to make it smaller---or a bit larger, and made clothes from patterns. In return, she might get a fish, a piece of venison, or a chunk of mutton. Even though my grandparents had very little, my grandmother continued to feed the homeless men, vagrants, and mentally ill people who came to the back door, begging for food. The soup pot was always on the stove, and she'd dole out a bowl of soup, some crackers, or a slice of bread. People were ecstatic to get food, and no one ever criticized my grandparents for whatever they gave out to these people looking for sustenance.
in Cincinnati we have a version of scrapple but it is called Geotta (get-a). My dad still makes it at home. love it!
All of them 😂
Thank you for sharing these beautiful nostalgic delicious recipes and i am going to make every last one of them.🥰😍🤗
Hope you enjoy
@America-Nostalgia Thank you!🥰💖
i'll be growing potatoes again this year; hope we get decent rain.
Sambos was an Icon that was attacked by racial ignorance. Sambos was started by Black men.
Author Treacher's fish and chips was great and I wish it would come back, I search everywhere for the best fish and chips.
@AmericanNostalgia I thoroughly enjoyed learning the origins of these recipes and your video style so much that I instantly subscribed. Thank you for posting and wishing you wellness and safety.
Butter,Bread and milk are considered expensive luxury for me though… 😢
I make bread pudding twice a month so I don't waste my milk and bread. I add raisins or dried cranberries and cinnamon too. 😋
The 70's were unbelievable - Choices. Burger Chef just disappeared along with Howdies. Many I never experienced. Really liked Chili's when they first started. Ho Jo's used to be good. Chi-Chi's. Victoria Station was the place to go to in the beginning for a Great Steak. Steak & Ale. On a travel trip, I discovered Ponderosa - really good - then. Thanks.
My two favorite are the Boston cream pie and lemon merging
Average German here: my grandmother often served a dish called Scheiterhaufen (Bonfire to burn witches at stakes) It calls for stale bread cut into very slender slices, very slender apple slices, raisins, eggs, milk and butter, sugar. You just put layers of bread, apples, bread, apples, bread in a buttered mould, sprinkle raisins now and than, and soak everything with the sugary egg milk. In former times a dish made from bread, milk and eggs was not uncommon and had nothing to do with depression. We also have a version were you put fresh cherries instead of apples and cut the bread into small cubes, some chopped almonds and no raisins, cinnamon and just toss and bake. People did not want to waste any goodness from their gardens or food in general.
We have the last free-standing Arthur Treacher’s in my hometown. I stop there sometimes. For fast food fish, it’s pretty good. It’s way better than Long John Silver’s and Captain D’s.
Wow, they look really good.
Bread pudding was yum! I also made and enjoyed suet pudding with lemon sauce.
Sambo's was awesome and it ended up going away for the dumbest of reasons.
Its called rice pudding!
My parents were married in 1933, so even though I was born 22 years later, a lot of their ethic carried through to my childhood. One thing that comes to mind is that we didn’t generally have pancake syrup on hand. Mom made syrup out of brown sugar and water.
We're going to need these recipes over the next 4 years....
My mom made bread pudding a lot why I was young I loved it then and still love it today!
Add ripe bananas to the chocolate depression cake, i did that for my 93yr old exes dad for his birthday. He loved it My daddy made use breakfast rice, it always reminds me of eating at the table n xt to a wood burning stove💚 He was a single father of four si he did the best he could for us❤️
French toast was a survival meal in hard times to use up rhe bread when it got old and dry
Thankyou😊❤
my grandma would eat baked bean sandwiches..
As a kid i alway wanted to Sizzler and Bob Big Boy thought that was the American thing to do.
Bob Cobb was the maestro from Seinfeld fyi 🤪
Slumgullion is mysteriously like goulashe
I can't believe Winston's are gone. What about Kent Kings?
'Paaasties' not 'pasties'. One covers nipples and the other is eaten.
I'm crazy about beans, esp 15 bean soup but really any kinda bean dish, and I'm not even in a position where I wouldn't be able to eat well without them. Beans are delicious
Y'm''sh Roy Rogers. I got a piece of glass in my burger there.
The narrator sounds like Obama
My mom was the best cook (God rest her soul) in the world! She made literally everything. I miss those days...❤
Yeah, what about Tad's Steaks in Times Square. A pretty good deal at the time.
