Your study on Saguaro has taught me a lot. Thank you. I recently retired from Oro Valley. I have 3 Sauaro in my front yard that I bought from a local nursery here in Tucson, planted in my front yard in 2012, and have grown well.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Saguaro in Oro Valley--perfect place. They will grow well :) About 4 months ago, I moved 5 of my seedlings to the front yard. They seem to be doing fine though I probably should give them more water until they get established.
The aesthetics and beauty of nature are unsurpassed. Fantastic photography and production.
Thanks so much for the nice comment. I agree that nature is amazing!
This was an excellent video! Thank you for all the photos, the follow up and the graphs and all the info you shared. I planted 10 seeds two weeks ago and one sprouted. I am so excited!
Thank you for such nice comments! I truly hope you have success! I'll bet a few more will pop up!
A very cool presentation, amazing work to shot + stack & the AV presentation. I hope they are using this on a continuous loop replay at the gardens. Hope you have also done a calendar from the images.
Thanks! Good idea to play it at the gardens. They use a poster with a few of the images. A calendar is a great idea that I hadn't thought of. This project became a bit of an obsession. I hate to think how much time I have into it.
Hey I figured out the lens problem but there is a new problem. When I try to record a video I get this message “Check the lens attachment. If the lens is not supported, you can permit movie recording in the Custom Settings menu.” I made a video about it on my channel. I can’t link it because RUclips will delete my comment. How did you get over this hurdle?
It's a manual lens without electronic contacts. You just need to tell the camera it's OK to use the lens. You will be responsible for focusing and setting the aperture. There is a menu item which allows the camera to ignore electronic input from the lens. When you use it as in my video, you set the focus to infinity and take the video after telling the camera it's OK to use a manual lens.
@@weekenddistractions how do I tell the camera its ok to use the manual lens?
@@kepler180 There is a menu item to do it. You may have to google it. I have to do it on every camera I attach to a microscope. I don't recall what it is called on the a6000. You'll have to goggle it.
@@weekenddistractions i figured it out. thank you so much
Beautiful web photos. Best I have seen anywhere. The gluedrops have always seemed as the source of diffraction so the plant diffraction is new. I am constructing a website on the same topic while trying to understand the diffraction process.
Thanks! It's fun taking these kinds of pics. I'll be interested to see how you look into this turns out.
how are you using an EFM-Mount on an E-mount camera? I bought every single piece of equipment used in this video and the mounts aren’t compatible
What is an efm mount? The lens is set for Emount and the filter rings bring it to the Leitz eyepiece threads. Not sure what you are saying.

Hello Weekend Distractions, have you or anyone you know tried to germinate saguaro seeds in a tissue culture media? A friend of mine in college, tried to geminate a particular type of cactus in tissue culture media. He compared the rate of growth between potted seeds and the ones on media, they were about 3 times as fast, the ones in media. I might try that method. My friend used a very common media called Murashige-Skoog media. I enjoyed watching your video. Thanks.
I've not heard of this, but it sounds interesting. If you do it, please keep us informed! Thanks for watching.
Where did you get the drop stitching guide from? I haven't yet found one for my 563
I don't understand the question. I googled drop stitching, and I still don't understand what it is.
Have you tried grafting saguaro onto a faster growing cactus?
I have not done this. Others have mentioned good results though. I'm patient :)
Awesome! The dedication to make this is amazing!
Thanks so much for the nice comment!
Wonder why my plant identifyer app states these are Scarlet hedgehog cactus. Maybe when they grow taller it can tell the differance? I have a 3" one now and the app also states its a "strawberry/scarlet hedgehog. I want to also start some seeds though!
I find that the plant identifiers get confused esp on cacti a lot. I hope you get a chance to start some seeds--it's a very slow process! Best.
Hi i am almost same setup. But, vignetting in the display. Zv-e1(sony fullframe) + tamron 70-300 + 8 step ring + mitutoyo alike 20x. I suspect step ring. Would you pls advice me?
Does the tamron open up to f/2.8 or faster? I need at least f/2.8 to limit vignetting. If you look at my butterfly scale video, you can see my current setup which dumps the camera telephoto and now I use the wemacro tube lens setup. It works really well and is not so large.
Nice, really good video, ate the fruit for the first time this summer, delicious. A friend in Bard CA has one that's about twenty -five years old with 13 arms will send a picture if I can find it. Blessings!😂
Glad you enjoyed the video. Never ate one, but they look good :)
I rode the Indian Spring loop in May, and the trails going to big lake were closed off. We did do the rest of the loop, and had something like 98 trees we had to lift our bike over. It was a lot of work and very tiring. The log book gave us warning with the difficulty! This is such a great area! Agree that it is great to see the water.
Sounds like it is worse than this ride in 2022--or at least as bad. It's a real shame as these trails are so scenic.
If you ever get the chance, visit Big Lake in the fall. The scenery with the leaves on the aspen trees turning gold is some of the best I’ve ever seen
I should make that a priority! Thanks for mentioning it.
Too bad the local Boys Scout Troop doesn't come out to help clear the trails of all the tree fall for merit badge certifications. The USFS should also work better at maintaining the trails, it makes you want to ride on 2 track roads and trails for the ease of riding and less portage.
Hi Todd, A few ATVs and chain saws would help immensely. I think a problem is that dead trees are continuously falling.
I love nature! I wanna be a environmental scientist
Thankyou, extremely interesting and informative. I just received my first Saguaro today, which maybe 9 years old. Super excited. I am in Australia.
Glad you enjoyed it--thanks! Do you plan on planting the saguaro outside? Just curious about the potential climate compatibility. I could guess there must be areas where it would work.
@@weekenddistractions No - I do have alot of frost in winter... and i do have a great windowsill for this plant to live inside.
where can I find the Leitz Wetzlar Periplane eye piece? I checked B & H and amazon and its not there
It was probably made in the 70s--so ebay is the best bet. There are other eyepieces with that thread. I know LOMO made one a while ago.
@@weekenddistractionscan you please link one to me? I looked it up and none of the results had visible threading. I’m a biology student and I also make microscope videos. I’m trying to copy your exact setup. I bought a Sony alpha a6100 (you have an a6000) from BestBuy today and I’ve yet to see if your camera attachments will work. I found all the other items but I need the eye piece with the 28mm thread.
Whoever named this thing just hates students 😂.
Thank you very much for a fantastic video. Fascinating parts of an intricate fountain pen.
Yeah--it's a neat pen, and they seal very well when working. Glad you found it interesting.

Mr. Distractions can you please make more plant videos? I would love to see a Cupressus arizonica video
I am working on another cacti video, but you see how long this one was in the making! This next one is similar to the saguaro, but it should be faster to develop:)
@@weekenddistractions I can wait 2 years, 5 years, even 10 years. I’m 20 and I have my whole life ahead of me. so please take your time
I like the timewarp being done, that is really cool. What Garmin do you have mounted?
This is the one and only timewarp I've done. Just wanted to see it for myself. It's an old Garmin 64st. Not very bike friendly.
@@weekenddistractions The Garmin cycle computers are really bike friendly. Sometimes using what you have can be a good thing also. :) These aren't cheap.
This is a great timelapse! Truly beautiful
Thanks! I wish I could have kept the studio lights for the timelapse, but that light wouldn't have been intense enough to get the flowers to open. Best wishes.
You should try finding fast growing cactus as well. IT helps in creating micro climates to create an environment for more complex plant life to emerge.
Hi. Yeah, I've been thinking about trying another cactus to grow from seed. Almost anything else will grow much faster than saguaro! Thanks for the comment.
Sad how mant foreign invaders have disrupted the natural world and human stupidity aand ignorance are at play as far as fault. Much of it has come from US Government recommended plant lists backed by flawed science of the times. I well remember those list back in the 1970s & 80s when I pursued habitat restoration. What a mess of things those Experts have created today.
Didn't tumbleweed come to the US this way too?
@@weekenddistractions Yup, I believe in the 1870s, it was said to have appeared in South Dakota when flaxseed from Russia turned out to be contaminated with Tumbleweed seeds. Industrial Ag and just in general poor land management by farmers with an ignorance on management have been the best facilitators of the weedy invasive.
Psalm 111:2 - "The works of Jehovah are great; They are studied by all those finding pleasure in them."
Lived in AZ my whole life and never met anybody here who refers to the metric system as casually as yourself. I bet when you drink a beer you drink them by the pint and when you fill up your car with gas your calculating how much your paying per liter..LOL
I do like the metric system for most things! However I've never been able to make the transition to Celsius. I always get into trouble dealing with machine shops as most of those folks use English units only. Thanks for watching.
How did you remove the end cap? I need to fix kinda the same mechanism
It's got little fingers that slide on and then resist being pulled off. You just kind of wiggle and pull.
incredible! glad I found your channel, very cool
can you recommend an affordable DIC Microscope? Really enjoying the channel, congrats on 1k subs!
That is a hard one. These old Olympus stands are the only ones I've found to be "affordable" -- but that depends on your definition of affordable. This is a transmitted DIC system which is quite a bit more money than the reflected DIC systems (and much harder to find). I got this one from a seller named kurt. I trust him to put together a decent system. I see there is a nikon optiphot transmitted system on ebay currently for $3500, but it says "mold" on optics. There are a couple of Olympus BH2 stands for over $8000 -- eek. Sometimes at University surplus auctions, you can find partial units. It's either a used car or an old transmitted DIC microscope!!
@@weekenddistractions wonderful! thank you
Thanks for the videos.
You are welcome. Glad they have some value for you!
Im going to attempt to grow saguaros this summer. Thanks for these updates!
I'm glad they are helpful. Hope your growing goes well!
I just want to know how to get one
I just planted a bunch of sanguaros! I am going to try and graft them to pereskiopsis plant to speed up growth although, I hear when you try to degraft is the problem as its very hard to root a degrafted sanguaro so my idea is to graft it to another cactus such as a grandiflores after degrafting from a pere then when its big enough I will try to root with hormone do you still have the sanguros can we get an update>
Hi TCB: I don't know anything about grafting, so you'll have to keep up updated on how it goes. I did do an update a few months ago where at the end, I showed the growth progress. Also did a little history as I understand about the expansion of the saguaro into AZ in that same video. Best of luck.
@@weekenddistractions very cool i love your videos I hope u make more in the future. And by grafting cactus to another faster growing cactus it will grow several times faster periskiopsis grows an inch a week as sanguro can take 150 years + to mature!
Amazing footage and amazing specimen! Thank you for posting this, I'd never know the existence of this interesting being
Glad you enjoyed it. It was new and surprising to me. Looked all over for ID and found a drawing in a river survey of aquatic worms.
still waiting on setup video
I appreciate that. It will happen, but I cannot say when at this time.
So here's a page that shows my setup: www.alanwood.net/olympus/digital-slr-bh2-microscope.html . In the camera adapter section, that tan OM adapter is what I am using. The silver part at the top accepts an old OM DSLR camera. I took that off and replaced it with a thin profile one for minolta cameras. I can do this because the flange to sensor distance on a minolta mount is slightly longer than an old OM DSLR (so I add a thin spacer under the thin profile minolta adapter). In the photo eyepieces section, I use the 2.5x NFK eyepiece to do the projection onto full frame. I can now also use sony e-mount cameras since I only need the adapter for converting E-mount to the old Minolta mount flange distance. Hope this helps. You could probably get an adapter for any modern mirrorless camera to the old olympus dslr mount annd avoid changing anything on the tan adapter.
@@weekenddistractions Ok so I already own 2 microscopes and I don’t want to buy a third. One of my microscopes is in Florida and I plan to leave it there at my grandma’s house for when I visit. The one I have access to year round is an OMAX 40x-2000x. I’m looking for a camera that can attach to my OMAX 40x-2000x Binocular microscope. I want the video quality to be the same as yours. I have a Nikon D3400 camera that I might be able to use but I have no clue how to set that up
@@kepler180 I have a video up that shows how I put a camera on a microscope without a trinocular port.
I like that setup..
It's a little clunky but it does work. I would prefer a trinocular, but too pricey for this type of microscope for me.
And I thought growing fruit trees took forever, my apple tree at 1 year old is probably taller than a 10 year old Saguaro.
Our neighborhood community newsletter keeps alerting us about the invasive plant. They post images of it but yours is so much better that I will be better able to identify it if I see it!
Well 'picture this' will ID it. I use it thanks to you! It's too bad it looks so pretty, but we need to chop it out.
Very nice images. Five times magnification makes me think of the MP-E65mm that I've wanted for the last few years - is that what you're using?
Thanks for the comment. I have Mitutoyo objectives with a tube lens on an automated stacking rig. I have a 5x and 20x.
what camera are you using on the microscope?
Sony A99 with the pellicle removed. I find the pellicle (Sony calls it the translucent mirror) degrades the image for 40x objectives and higher.
@@weekenddistractions thank you
@@weekenddistractions Can you show the rig you have setup to film the microscope? I looked up the camera and its not designed to attach to a microscope. How are you attaching it to the scope?
@@kepler180 If you look at my Leitz Diavert video, you can see how I mounted the Sony A99 to that microscope with an old Nikon adapter. For this video, I used the Olympus BH2. I used the standard camera adapter that Oly has for their DSLR cameras. Turns out that the Sony A99 (with its Minolta mount) has a slightly longer flange to sensor distance than the old Olympus DSLRs. So I removed the camera adapter flange from it and replaced it with a very low profile Minolta adapter. I have not done a video on this rig, but plan to eventually.
What was the objective of the dic?
My greywater flush toilet tanks is just LOADED with vorticella! Not sure why there are so many of them.
Guess there is good eating there :)
Great footage!! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That was a blast! Did dinosaurs have parasitic protozoa? I imagine they would have.
Never thought about that, but I suppose you are right!

Thanks. It turned out better than I thought when I first started it. Works great for its intended purpose too.
