Famous Footprints on the Tyne and Wear Metro
In perhaps one of the oddest bits of trivia concerning the Tyne and Wear Metro, each terminus station on the Yellow Line contains the concrete impressions of a famous sportsperson' footprints. The more you know.

The New Glasgow Subway Trains Are INCREDIBLE
Просмотров 216 тыс.5 месяцев назад
The Glasgow Subway is famous as the third oldest underground metro system in the world, and the only one to have never been expanded in the century since. Having last received new trains back in 1980, it's now time for Stadler's fully modern third generation rolling stock to take over operations around the 16-station inner and outer Subway circle. In April, I visited Glasgow to ride the old uni...
Train-themed Football Teams 🚂⚽
Просмотров 5765 месяцев назад
Join me as I ramble through the extremely niche overlap of two seemingly disparate special interests- trains and football (soccer) logos. With so many sporting events happening over this summer, I ask: How many football teams proudly feature trains on their crests? It might be more than you think!
The Tyne & Wear Metro Class 555s Are Finally Testing!
Просмотров 6 тыс.6 месяцев назад
The day's finally arrived for the first new Tyne and Wear Metro class 555 train to venture out onto the system for daylight testing and kilometre accumulation, ahead of its entry into public service. So I headed out to see it go past.
What's the Deal With the New Sunderland Station?
Просмотров 6 тыс.7 месяцев назад
After the best part of a decade languishing in the railway version of development hell, at the end of 2023 the first phase of the redevelopment of Sunderland's much-maligned rail station opened to the public, in the form of a spacious new south entrance to the station. But as pretty much everyone has been quick to point out, the new building serving both mainline trains and the Tyne & Wear Metr...
Tyne and Wear Metro Class 555s delayed AGAIN
Просмотров 9 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Amid mounting train failures and plummeting levels of reliability, the new Class 555 trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro are certainly needed now more than ever. But just last week, as they were due to begin their biggest phase of network testing yet, the transport operator announced their first entry into passenger service would be delayed yet again. Join me to talk about what's going on with t...
The Tragic Cross House Disaster
Просмотров 82110 месяцев назад
On the 23rd December 1919, Christmas shoppers milling around central Newcastle upon Tyne started to smell smoke, and soon discovered that Cross House, a fashionable office building, had caught fire. But when the Fire Brigade turned up to rescue those trapped inside, it turned out they weren't equipped to deal with a building so tall, forcing bystanders to come together to come up with solutions...
The Solitary Foot Crossing on the Tyne and Wear Metro
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.11 месяцев назад
Well out on the western end of the Tyne and Wear Metro lines is a curious and unique crossing over the tracks. Come with me through the snow to Woolsington, to discover the loneliest foot crossing on the whole Metro network. EDIT: thanks to everyone in the comments who rightly informed me that there are other foot crossings elsewhere on the Metro. I'll definitely be looking at those in another ...
The Thing Now Approaching (Halloween Special)
Просмотров 857Год назад
All I remember about the Tyne and Wear Metro from my early childhood was that I was terrified of it. Somehow, that later turned into undying obsession. So, to celebrate this year's spooky season, I present a video-poem fantasticising exactly that transformation. Enjoy! Did you know I write poetry? Want to hear more? let me know!
Trying Out Liverpool's New Trains (sneak peek for Tyne & Wear!)
Просмотров 3 тыс.Год назад
I went to check out Merseyrail's brand new Class 777 metro trains - since they were built by Stadler, just like the upcoming Tyne and Wear Metro Class 555 trains, I wanted to get a preview of what might be in store for the people of Tyneside and Wearside... and if these trains are anything to go by, we're definitely in for a real treat.
They SWAPPED the Yellow and Green Lines
Просмотров 4,4 тыс.Год назад
Let's take a look at that weird time where, for the span of a few years, the lines of the Tyne and Wear Metro were swapped over from how they can be found today, a time when you could take the yellow line straight to... Sunderland?
What Was the Best Metro Colour Scheme?
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.Год назад
With the classic Tyne and Wear Metrocars sadly on the way out, I decided to take a look back at all of their previous liveries and find out which design colour scheme was considered the best... would it be the elegant original two-tone design, the 90s multicolour rave-trains, or the latest dark and moody affair? Have your say in the comments below! Chapters: Intro: 00:00 1980s: 03:28 1990s: 07:...
I Made My Own Metro Cube

Take one cheap plastic mood light, add four custom vinyl stickers, and you can make your very own mini Tyne and Wear Metro cube! Fingers crossed something like this could be made and sold officially at some point in the future, but until then I'll enjoy my own DIY Metro totem.

Artworks Revealed for the New Metro Trains
I think the Pacer is an example of how not to build a train, but at the same time was also the train that saved much of the Northern railways, and many of the underused Southern railways. Without it, there's a good chance the UK could've ended up like the US, where rails are bought by private freight companies and shun passenger services.
The only use the Pacer has ever been, and will ever be, is as a warning from history.
I think they preserve the Pacer as a warning to posterity to never repeat it.
MAN UP, Stadler are as much use as a wire netting watering can, three out of three systems mentioned were/are 3 - 4 years overdue
They look lovely
I agree
I think these trains look way better than the new Siemens trains for the Piccadilly line in London.
0:36 bro was so confused 😂
What I like at newcastle is when you stand at the castle end of platform 4 you can still see a forgotten about section of the old city wall
I know British Tubes are safe and reliable, I have worked in London (and visited Glasgow often) and have no bad experiences (with the transport itself). But they are quite small and cramped, bordering on claustrophobic and I have always wondered why. Does it have to do with the age of the tunnels?
Can you go around a few times just to pass the time with one ticket if you don't get off?
And where is Dublin in the Future
Thanks for this video. I particularly valued the description of the crossing and old bay suburban platforms. I can remember going to central station as a boy in the 1970s with my dad (to drop off my grandparents, enroute to London) and finding the hustle and bustle scary. I’d always subsequently thought this was just because I was a child, but wonder now whether it was because the station was actually much bigger and busier. I’d also like to visit those toilets! What a wonderful piece of heritage preserved.
Looking forward to the new trains. I moved to Newcastle under two months ago and while I love the look of the old ones (and have already taken the opportunity to ride in the front and pretend I'm driving) I've had my Metro cancelled 4 times, been stopped due to mechanical issues twice and can't count how many times I've been delayed. My parents almost missed their flight home because they had two cancelled trains to the airport in a row!

Do you know when they removed the red and blue lines? I've recently spotted an old map in the Monument station that has the old yellow and green TW logo and the track extended to Airport, so I can only get it dated between 1991-2000 (since the TW logo swapped with Nexus in 2001). This map is on the head end of the line going toward south shields, and it's interesting since it's almost exactly like the one in the NRM, but without the red/blue lines (and contains airport).
Only information I can find is on Railforums with people claiming blue lasted until 1993 and red until 1997, but I have no idea how to verify this
Its very important to note that the train has to be small enough to fit in the hole made for it , sorry for being technical but when people whine about its size the a quick to forget this
different train changes i know about: Glasgow Subway METRO in Liverpool Tyne and Wear Metro
IM SO INPATIENT-
I’ve been in a Glasgow subway before and I knew about this
Wait a minute *THATS A TRAIN HAVING BUS DOORS*
you're so right about the interiors, they feel really spacious and clean
i worked on the new bridge st construction back in 1980?
Anyone having problems with insomnia, here's the cure
As predicted...another sunderland 'knacker trap'.
The pacers are ones of my favourite DMUs that have run on british railways, except the class 141.
Now modernize the tracks aswell
Bad idea to have upholstery seats. As well as being incredibly unhygienic, they will soon become threadbare and need constant replacement. They should have gone with metal seats like most modern metros do. Metal seats are easier to wipe off the Buckfast and deep fried Mars Bar vomit too.
now, not 2023 not 2024 2025 it is! [2026 NOO] 2027 NOOOOO 2028 NOOOOO 2029 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Aye INCREDIBLY shite, how they managed to make a 50 year old system worse in pretty much every way is somehow admirable
No they didnt
But why are they so bumpy?
What would the theme be for the green line though?
Get some Sunderland players at Stadium of Light station for starters
I think the only comparatively odd thing trivia wise than the footsteps is the Latin at Wallsend station. I always find that an awesome fact
Oh hi you also watch this channe lol
@@hopperelec Of course!
Glasgow Underground is incredible, but the accessibility is absolutely ridiculous!
I'm Australian and used to live in Newcastle. My parents were from there, so I spent a few years there when I was about 19 getting to know my heritage (in roughly 2004 onwards for a few years). I really loved my time there, and what I wouldn't give for Gregg's to open here in Australia. If you weren't aware, you should have a look at Newcastle in Australia. A lot of areas of the Australian Newcastle are named after areas of the UK Newcastle; it has a Jesmond, a Wallsend, a Gosforth etc. The entire city was clearly developed by some homesick Geordies. The Australian Newcastle is also the world's largest coal exporting port too, taking over from the original Newcastle.
They should call it *"the McTube"!* for all its worth
go to the eu or asia than glasgow is a pile of waste of time and ends up like the rest of the rest of the uk transportation system dead and underfundet
As an American, who is used to giant subway/train cars, and as a 6’5 guy…I could feel my breath literally catching in my chest at the size of these things. 😅 Geez they’re tiny. I’d get a bit claustrophobic at first. But beyond that that, it’s amazing how clean, well-kept, and nice every thing is. The stations are beautiful, the train themselves look very nice - even the older models were miles better than what we have over here in most of our cities with train/subway systems. Very, very nice. Our train lines could take some cues and lessons from this!
With that amount of rocking and jerkiness, I doubt I could ride them.
I am a geordie, born on Stanhope St. In 1945, I remember Newcastle Station very well it was and still is the best station in the world, left from it to take my first job in the smoke with a lot of other lads Monday morning plat 10,at 6.30am , slept till York at least then went straight to work for half a day's holiday!
Old ones looked well better
Is there anything under the benches? Otherwise you could put bags under it
It’s Sunderland, it backs onto hendon..
They’re not incredible I got trapped in a broken down one for an hour never stepped foot on them since
Oh wow those are short! Looks like a person my height (6'0) could really only stand up in the very middle, if at all. But it also looks like widening or raising the height of the cars at all would basically require you to redo the entire system. What a unique artifact of that early age of subways.
Fabric seats are weird. In Asia they are all metal. Easier to disinfect.
It was an awful building and in my view the awards were a con trick. I walked through it every day in the 70s and it was a dead, litter strewn place. The new city hall makes a far better statement and the new housing on the old site looks great.
