My dad spent time as an engineer during the mid to late 60s ,there were 2 or 3 dishes, I went there as a kid with my dad for the day and it was like a science fiction movie ,his mates even printed my name out on the computer ticker tape machine ,great to see this 😊
I'm working on a refurbishment project of a 12.8m antenna formerly used as a NATO ground station. We haven't had to replace any nuts and bolts, but have had a few structural repairs to do. The main task is replacing the motors, and putting in our own modern motion-control system and position sensors.
Working on restoration of a 12.8m dish mostly for radio astronomy but also for lunar space missions in the future.
Nice! I'm currently involved in a project to restore a former-NATO ground-station antenna -- only 12.8m, but similar in some ways to GHY-3. Some day, I hope to visit Goonhilly.

Came here as a child really enjoyed visiting the site found it fascinating so good that it has been reopened 🎉
You can pick oranges and avocadoes from your new earth station in Heritage Valley! Also, we had black bears, cougars, coyotes, foxes etc etc, visiting the property. But beware of the occasional diamond back! 😎

Driven past at least twice on holidays - would love to bring the kid to see something "just a little larger" than a Sky dish.
Goonhilly - off far to the Southwest for the Telstar experiment in 1962, on bed rock for the heavy structures, rural area meant it's electrically quiet without tall structures in the geostationary arc, and on the site of the old Dry Tree Chain home station from WW2 which meant the land was cheap. Mainly I was told, it was because the land was cheap 🙂.
Great to see some of the dishes keeping their old names ! I was lucky enough to visit a few times when you could and it was absolutely fantastic for us geeky radio hams 😁
Interesting the guide is allowed to wear the safety helmet with the strap loose instead of secured. During a fall with multiple impacts that helmet might easily come off. Exposing the unprotected skull to a subsequent impact.

Very interesting! I have some questions related to scheduling: Each antenna is obviously only pointing in one direction at a time. What if a spacecraft sends a signal at a time when no dish is pointing at it? Also, how often do you move each antenna? How long does it take to download or upload each communication to a spacecraft? Thanks!
You upload a schedule for the next few days onto the spacecraft, so the spacecraft knows in advance when to transmit. Every Telemetry get acknowledged, so when the spacecraft does not get a response, it will keep the data for next time. In deep space each contact lasts typically 4-8 hours. Goonhilly is not booked that often, so I would guess that they often get only one pass per day, but sometimes for example during the launch of Artemis 1 their schedule could be booked more than half of the time.

I didn't know that there are 'customers' other than government agencies like NASA that would send spacecraft into deep space. Could you elaborate more on the type of customers you have, and what type of spacecraft and missions that they have?

ESA sometimes books this antenna for Cluster II or Mars Express. NASA rarely books this antenna for example for the Cubesats onboard Artemis 1. Then there often is the case that other companies and Space Agencies book ESTRACK as a single groundstation network provider, but because of capacity issues they partially also get Goonhilly. This would be the case for iSpace Hakuto-R or ISRO Aditya-L1.

Are there thoughts of increasing the size of the dish - as in adding additional external side reflectors? Is a 32 m dish large enough or (as always) is larger better? Is the equipment operated at 240 v 2 phase or are you using 3 phase 600v ? Do you work with SETI during off-times?
For example for launcher tracking, one would rather choose a 5m antenna than a 32m antenna. This antenna might even have problems keeping up with some low flying satellites, especially, if they go through the zenith. Heavy structures are hard to move and might deform, which decreases signal quality. NASA also shifts to multiple 35m antennas for deep space operations instead of single 70m antennas. This way they are more flexible and modern technology is capable of bundling antenna efficiently together.
What frequencies can the dish operate at? What accuracy is the dish designed at? Is the dish parabolic or hyperbolic? What is the sensitivity in receiving mode? Please and thank you.
The antenna operates in S- and X-Band (2000-2300 & 7145-7235 & 8400-8500MHz). If i look at comparable antennas in terms of size and receiver, i would guess that the G/T should be pretty much 50dB/K in X-Band.

whats with the bloody irritiating music, its such an excellent opputnity to hear from the people that work there, why ruin it with music - ok some intro/exit music, but constant crappy music, its very annoying.
Awesome video of the control rooms. I recently took a trip to Womera-rocket range South Australia. Looking at the old tech it is a wonder they could track anything. I use TinyGS to track over-head orbits in South Australia.

@@chaseshadow it's all such a lie that even I am able to see and photograph the spacecraft these people are able to communicate with. I have many pictures of various satellites like Starlink and the ISS. If your age is old, I would've expected you to be wiser than you currently appear, maybe take your own advice.
