The Best *#@! Christmas Ever: An Atari 8-bit Journey Into The Vertical Blank

great video, loved the story of how you two got your Atari 800, and how you never gave up on the dream. I myself bought a 400 in 1983 , two months before christmas, was brought to my house as a fun time to check it out . Once I played Star Raiders I knew I had to own this machine, I lucked out and the guy that owned it was looking to sell,. 400 dollars later, I owned a 400 ,tape drive, Star Raiders and Space Invaders. I later upgraded to 48 K ,a 1050 disk drive and the Action Programming cart, and created a game I named Midas Maze for analog magazine. issue 52. . I now program using the Godot Game engine. if not the for chance meeting with my 400 I would have never learned to program. so....thank you Atari, thank you Star Raiders, and thank you guys for this wonderful story, filled me with the same feeling I got back in 1983.,

Thanks for this, I started listening yesterday and am almost done. Like most Atari fans of the early 1980s, I learned of Swordquest from a Fall 1982 issue of Atari Age. I can't say I was too interested; the concept of a contest didn't really interest me and especially so after seeing screenshots of SwordQuest. I can't say I played any of the games back then, and when I try them today I have no clue what I'm doing. I knew there was issues with the prizes but had no idea that YEARS passed while people were waiting to hear from Atari on their submissions. Fascinating story.

Street fighter 2. I wanted to play it on the falcon but no matter what I did it wouldn't work. I was very disappointed. Then it was patched by D-Bug, I was then undisappointed because it was a slow jerky mess. Still, back in the 90s? I might have played it a lot or I might have been terribly disappointed. I played Shinobi a lot and that was a slow jerky mess as well. Just not as much. I don't agree with the criticism on the graphics. They did excellent work in redrawing the graphics with the ST's limitations. Ultimate Arena: I always thought it was too easy in a sense. At the time I got a hold of it my brother already had a megadrive and/or playstation, so yeah, no comparison to mortal kombat. Still with the resources they had available, awesome work. At least it's better than Kasumi Ninja (but Aazhom Crypt on the falcon is better than that as well, so a very low bar).

This very first proper one-on-one fighting game is actually credited to the Cinematronics vector arcade game Warrior, which you never hear people mention. Instead they usually reference Karate Champ by Data East (not Tecmo!) or Yie Ar Kung Fu by Konami, which is very much the originator of the modern fighter as it featured things like different characters, varied fighting landscapes and special moves that included projectile attacks. I still maintain that IK+ is the best fighting game on the ST, it has everything. Panza Kickboxing is very impressive however, but takes a long time to master. No Exit is a horrendous game, I really slagged it off in Retro Gamer some years ago. Pit-Fighter is such a brave port with an amazing intro and some impressive scaling effects, but it plays far too slow. Still the Matt Furniss music is one of the very best tunes on the ST. Street Fighter II is about as good as it could be, it was by U.S. Gold though, not Ocean as you said in the video. I noticed you included a boxing game too, not the one I expected to see though, I thought you might include the ST port of Taito's Final Blow AKA James Buster Douglas Boxing on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. You could have also included Barbarian II, Human Killing Machine (although that is pretty awful), Street Fighter 1 (again pretty crap), Bangkok Knights, Karate King, Thai Boxing and best of all Thalion's superb Chambers of Shaolin, which rivals IK+ as the ST's best fighting game and is by far the biggest miss from this video! You should definitely do a follow-up with all of these and Final Blow, you could probably include wrestling games too like Ocean's WWF games or Epyx's excellent Championship Wrestling.

Couple of corrections, Pitfighter is an Atari Games arcade not Midway - although they later acquired Atari Games I believe, and it was US Gold who messed up Streetfighter 2, not Ocean, who might have done a better job. Personally I would take the original IK over most of the games here. I can't believe you missed off the Human Killing Machine... surely that is the greatest fighter ever.... or not. Pitfighter runs at higher framerates in 2p mode, as it appears it is the AI which is causing a lot of the slow down. I remember a two player demo on a One coverdisk that ran at twice the framerate, making it much more playable.

I fondly recall trips to the arcade, playing classic games like Slap Fight and Flying Shark. Inspired by these experiences, I incorporated elements into my own game, Foundations Waste. I even added a cheat code to the Atari ST version, though the details have slipped my mind. To test the game, I loaded it onto an ST at a computer store and observed young players. Despite receiving feedback about the ship's size, I decided to keep it as is. Erroll Elliston

I had an ST in Spring 1986, nice computer but not really worthy of the Atari logo for arcade games so until my PAL Amiga 1000 arrived in 87 I played more C64 games than ST games. Luckily Time Bandit was quite well coded, so even though the graphics are a bit tiny they look kinda cool and the 8 way scrolling is pretty good for the time.

Some people have told us that you CAN save the game while playing but we can't find any mention of this in the ST instructions. Is this a PC or Amiga feature =)

    • @retrotronics1845

To save the game you have to go to certain spots on each level and do it at that location if I remember correctly.

It's a feature in the ST game but only starting in version 2.1. You simply visit the signpost in the centre of the world map, and it tells you to press S or L to save or load in the corner of the screen.

@@Sakanakao That sounds about right. I definitely had a later version because I got it for cheap when Microdeal were offloading some of their earlier games, on one of the games I bought you could read the name of the old game on the label underneath the new white disk label they had just plastered on the top to re-use old disks.

  • @Sakanakao

You keep criticizing it for not having a save... you can save! It has 6 save slots, if you go to the signpost in the middle of the map.
