Banjo Breakdown Jig ceilidh music on South Uist
A week spent on South Uist, The landscape varies from the sandy beaches of the west coast to the hills to the east. Recycling facilities are rather limited.... The tunes from the Forth Bridges Dance Band are Banjo Breakdown, Corner House Jig, Pet o' the Pipers. The indifferent quality of the images was a result of having to reduce the file size to speed up the upload - 0.4Mb isn't wonderful!!

Harry Holland, WW1 soldier, commemorated at Vis-en-Artois cemetery
Просмотров 5626 лет назад
Sue Holland was so affected by the thought of this young man, having survived so much of WW1 only to be killed 45 days before its end that she wrote this haunting lament to his memory. Sue sings her song on this slideshow, accompanying photographs taken 100 years to the day after he died in action.

Some Hebridean scenery here, from the wilder eastern side of the islands to the machair and white beaches on the west coast. The tunes from the band are the Red House Reel, a highland reel and The Night at Glenzier. Apologies for the image quality. The pre-uploaded version looked much better!
Niel Gow's Farewell to Whisky, Willie Brewed a Peck o' Maut, The Ale is Dear
Просмотров 3229 лет назад
A set of boozy reels from an earlier incarnation of the Forth Bridges Dance Band. Perhaps the sentiments of the last explain the actions in the first! The second tune might need some explanation. A peck is an old measure of dry volume equivalent to two gallons. "Maut" is malt i.e. Willie made a brew using a peck of malt. Perhaps he was having friends for dinner or wanted to get round the high c...

A set of reels from the Forth Bridges Dance Band recorded here at a practice session. Probably best listened to using headphones. The views were all taken during the same week in May in Sutherland in the north west of Scotland. The weather ranged from temperatures near freezing with snow on the hills combined with gale force winds, to a warm day in the hills when the heat rose out of sheltered ...
Glenside Polkas in the glens!

We've uploaded marches, jigs, reels, waltzes, twosteps, slow airs and strathspeys so it's time for some polkas. These are the Glenside Polka number one followed by the Glenside Polka number two from the Forth Bridges Dance Band. The names are a bit unexciting but the tunes are lively enough! The slideshow moves from burns in spate in the northwest highlands the morning after hurricane Bertha in...
Shetland Two Step; ceilidh band country

The Forth Bridges Dance Band hasn't actually been to Shetland so this is the nearest we could get in terms of scenery, in distance if not in character, to go with the music. The first part is a walk over from the Kyle of Durness towards Loch Eriboll on the north coast of Scotland. This is followed by some remote country between Scourie and Foinaven. Full details are available on request! The vi...

An old ballad telling the story of mistaken identity, or in this case, lack of recognition. I've always been a bit worried about Lindsay's intentions when she doesn't seem to be interested in the suitor until she finds out that he's a clan chief. Bits of the song came from Burns, other sections were added later according to the editor of the Kilmarnock Edition of Burns' works. Highland scenes w...
Mhari's Wedding on Harris! Ceilidh band marches for a Gay Gordons
Просмотров 6 тыс.11 лет назад
The tunes here are Mhari's Wedding, Mormond Braes and The Lights of Lochindaal. Sadly neither the Mormond Braes in the north east nor Lochindaal on Islay feature here. All of the views are of the island of Harris in the Outer Hebrides but they're none the worse for that. The Forth Bridges Dance Band use this set for a Gay Gordons, one of the best known dances at ceilidhs and weddings in Scotland.

Filming this was a very emotional experience for me and my two friends Grant and Micky. We were there on 27 September, 2018, the centenary of Harry Holland's death; it was a beautiful warm sunny day in Vis-en-Artois and, apart from a little bit of traffic noise, was quiet and peaceful. The immaculate serried ranks of white limestone from Dorset enhanced the light and it was easy to imagine angelic music drifting through the trees. Then we realised that many of the graves marked the passing of two young men, not just one. And that there were many many graves for unidentified soldiers in this cemetery. And on the arc of the limestone colonnade on either side of the huge stone of remembrance were inscribed the hundreds of names of 'the missing', including Harry Holland, my adopted soldier from Norwich, who died aged 23 in one of the last battles of the war. These were the battles that finally broke through the enemy lines and led to the end of the 4 year stalemate, but which claimed the lives of many men from many corners of the world. We were transported back to the deafening sounds of artillery fire, shells exploding, shouting, screaming, aircraft, guns......the unique sounds of battle from 100 years ago in the 'war to end all wars', which would have been the background to the fighting in which all these young men were killed, and, as evidenced here, in which many were obliterated. The deafening noise would have been all around here in what is today such a little haven of peace from the world of 2018. To visit the green fields of France is an experience which changes you. I think you could call it living history. Go. Buy a poppy. Lest we forget.

Margaret's Waltz is an _English Country Dance_ tune composed in 1959 by Pat Shaw for his dance composition Margaret's Waltz. Enormously popular in Australia, England and elsewhere. We taught the dance to Pat Murphy, Irish Set Dancing Master, at the South Sligo Summer School in Tubbercurry in 2011. He has included it in his fourth dance compendium (albeit without attributing the composer of the music or the dance!). Unfortunately this version, while very well played, is not played in dance time!

    • @FBDBmusic
      @FBDBmusic 9 лет назад

+Arthur Kingsland Ok let's clear up one or two misunderstandings. Firstly, no claim was made or implied anywhere in the information that this wasn't composed by someone from outwith Scotland. Secondly the "..not in dance time.." depends rather on your audience and the dance involved (it's a big favourite with our audiences when played for a Pride of Erin). There are many tunes which go hand in hand with a particular dance e.g. The Duke of Perth and La Russe have their own dances but that doesn't stop bands using them for other dances e.g. the Dashing White Sergeant. Thirdly, we are a Scottish ceilidh band not a barn dance band disguised as a ceilidh band and as such we adapt tunes to what we know our audiences will like. Lastly, glad you enjoyed the music - as they say on a certain Saturday night TV show, "Keep dancing!!"

I know it's been a while since your comment about Laura's Magic Legs but you might be interested in the background to the tune. Laura was a fiddler with the band for several years before studies for a medical degree got in the way. As well as being a very talented fiddler, she was an excellent dancer. At one function, after she had finished her highland dance, a member of he audience commented, "Aye lassie, you've got magic in these legs." The comment cried out for a tune so L'sML was born!
