Welcome to idkwid garage! I don't know what I'm doing, but I'll figure it out (probably).
We build our rigs in our garage, and then take 'em out on the trails to see what they can do. We feature mostly automotive related content, generally focused on off road / four wheeling and Jeeps. But not always.

This Didn't Go as Planned! Rocks, Springs, and Recoveries! WJ ZJ Grand Cherokees on Hidden Canyon!
So we decided to take the Jeeps out to the Hidden Canyon trail, which is part of the Logandale Trail System. Logandale Trails is about an hour outside of Las Vegas, and has some pretty cool trails. We've been out here before, but this is the first time trying this trail.
Things started out pretty mild, but the trail got more interesting quick! Stay tuned to see how this trail adventure turns out!

Installing 4.5" ZJ Grand Cherokee Lift on a Budget
Просмотров 135День назад
So the 5-speed manual swapped ZJ has been doing really well off-road, but it's time to give it a little bigger lift! In this video, we install a 4.5 inch pieced together / cheap / budget lift on the ZJ. We sourced a bunch of different parts from various vendors to give this thing a boost without breaking the bank. In total, the cost of the lift came in aroung $500 - $600. Not too bad for a 4 1/...
Finishing DIY Rock Sliders for WK Grand Cherokee (Part 2)

In this video, we finish up our DIY rock sliders for our 2007 Jeep WK Grand Cherokee. We are adapting some take-off wrangler rock rails to our WK Grand Cherokee. We continue the process of fabricating and welding mounts to get some rock protection for the WK! The off-road capabilities of the WK Grand Cherokee are often underestimated but it can definitely wheel! Now we just need some extra prot...
DIY Rock Sliders for Grand Cherokee WK! (Part 1)
Просмотров 13221 день назад
In this video, we start to fabricate some rock sliders for the WK Grand Cherokee! The WK Grand Cherokee is surprisingly capable off-road, but it doesn't have as much lift or tire size as our WJ or ZJs, so it tends to scrape a little more. Time to get some rock protection to take care of that problem! We start with some take off rock rails from a wrangler that we got from FB marketplace, and wor...

In this video, we check out a Jeep Cherokee XJ that's been sitting in my parents' yard for the past 2 years. Can it be saved? Will it even start? So we're back to Rock Gap with the Manual Swapped ZJ! This jeep has been cheaply / mildly modified, sporting a 2" spacer lift and 31 inch all terrain tires. How good is it off-road? We brought along the WJ for support just in case we run into a...
Will This $100 Facebook Marketplace ZJ Bumper Work With a Badland 12k Winch?

In this video, we adapt a ZJ bumper purchased from FB marketplace for $100, so that we can fit a Badland 12k winch onto the red ZJ! This bumper is a custom project that someone created, and was selling it fairly cheap on Facebook marketplace. Only problem is that when we got it home and looked a little closer, the winch mounting area wasn't wide enough for the winch we intended to use, a Badlan...

So we continue to put the Manual Swapped ZJ through its paces! Since the last outing, it has been outfitted with 31" tires, so it should be a little more capable than the previous stock tires that were on it. This time we decided to hit Rocky Gap Trail again. However, we ran into an issue before we even got started! After taking care of that, it was getting late but we decided to do the trail a...

In this video, we hit Tie Rod Canyon Trail, which is a easy/moderate trail located just outside of Las Vegas. It's a nice scenic trail through the desert, with some small rocky sections with small ledges and rocky desert terrain. The Jeeps are: ...

DIY Jeep Alignment and Tie Rod End Replacement
Great video! Beautiful scenery!!
Thanks!
It ain't right, but I laughed pretty good when the spring came shooting out. Gave me flashbacks! Is that like 35's and 37's on those two rigs? Look much beefier than my 33's on my XJ. Looked like a fun trip. Crazy muddy and slick up here in the desert of Washington. Trail drives aren't as fun, have a little more pucker power.
Hahah, yeah it was pretty funny, gotta admit :) The WJ is on 35s, and th ZJ is on 33s
Came out amazing, as always. Definitely looks factory. Got to wait for that wheel to stop moving on the grinder. Looks like wasn't that bad by the looks of the bandaging. Not fan of IFS Jeeps but I got to admit they can hang, Keep up the videos.
Thanks! Yeah, I reached for something over the grinder, and when I brought my arm back, my glove caught the wheel and I rubbedy arm on the grinding wheel 🤦♂️. Wasn't too bad, more of a friction burn. As for IFS,yeah I agree solid is better for off road for sure
love these videos, love to see them ZJ and WJ out still doing what it was intended for. Keep it up💪💪
Thanks, appreciate it!
I dumped the same spring in my wj earlier this week 😆
😁 yeah, not sure why jeep didn't put the retainer clips on the wjs...
@idkwidgarage it's on my list of parts to buy! 🤣
Yeah I keep thinking maybe I should add some clips, but I did limit straps instead and so far that has kept it in.. We will see :)
@idkwidgarage I saw you're video adding the limit straps. Your build is super similar to mine. RC long arms, 6.5 inch springs and bilsteins. I plan on adding clips and making a taller coil retainer for the top of the bucket. How much does the straps limit your flex? I don't want to stop articulation but I don't want to dump a spring again!
@danwall5010 so I sized my limit straps based on the max height of the spring when it's uncompressed, and then i got limit straps that were about 1" shorter than the spring + distance to strap mount points (since they stretch). I haven't really noticed it limiting my flex, but I'm sure it does slightly. Before I had the limit straps, I had actually lifted that same tire off the ground and the spring didn't come out - I think it only happens when one side gets stuffed completely which forces the other side lower than what gravity would normally do, and the spring falls out. So in that situation the limit straps keeps it from getting pushed down too far I think
sweet set up on a budget, looks great. what trac bar you have up front?
Thanks! The front track bar is Rubicon Express
How does the wj ride now?
Ride is unaffected, but it definitely transfers more noise and vibration into the jeep. But that's to be expected any time you put stiffer motor or trans mounts in I suppose
How many sets of axles do you have in your garage?
Lol, only one set! The others are on jeeps... Most of the time :)
Looks pretty decent man. Kinda looks factory. Glad you're alright. You shouldn't fight with a grinder though, they always win. You really should try those Milwaukee Sawzall blades I was telling you about. Keep the wk content coming!
Thanks! Yeah the grinder incident wasn't that bad, I was reaching for something, and when I brought my arm back, my glove caught the end of the wheel and I "brushed" my arm against the spinning wheel. Didn't really stop right away, but then I noticed it started bleeding so I figured I should bandage it up 🤣
How is the underbody in such incredible condition?
Been in the desert most of it's life, no snow or salt :)
@@idkwidgarage Impressive! Looking forward to part 2.
Kevin!! Sweet 👍 This is a project I plan to do as well. Keep the vids coming man
Cool, yeah I was debating if I should cut out the rockers and do square tube, or adapt the wrangler ones. Then these showed up on FB marketplace for super cheap so I went that route. On the xj I will be doing the rectangular tube/rocker replacement, but that's a little ways off still. I will say that if you do go this route with the wrangler ones, use stronger square tube to connect to the frame than what I did (more to come in that in future vids 🙂)
@idkwidgarage I'm interested to see what yours look like finished. Not sure that I'd use the same thing from a wrangler but was thinking of some round tube custom bent stuff. I'm still waiting for the uca vid cause I have to tell ya what I discovered lol
@Rob-Erto cool, yeah that's coming in a few vids, gotta finish the sliders, do the winch and bumper, and then I think I do the ucas. Prob some wheeling in there somewhere too 😄
Should help with frame stiffness too! Are the wk unibody?
Yeah it is unibody still. But the unibody seems much beefier than the earlier ones they put on an xj or zj
@idkwidgarage that's exactly why I asked! The rails look thicker and taller than the WJ too.
you need a pick set
Yeah, I have some, not sure if I did when I made this video or if I just forgot to use em 😄
Have you noticed if it works good? I actually installed this same LSD in my Jeep XJ’s Dana 30 a couple of months ago and I’m not entirely sure how it is supposed to work… just looks like an open carrier from outside…
Yeah it works much better than the stock vari-loc diff. Wit the the stock one, there were some rock ledges/walls that I needed to climb with one wheel first, and the stock one wouldn't do it. With this one, it just climbs right up. It's still not as good as a "real" locker, and there are still situations where you can be left with one wheel spinning, but I am pretty happy with it for a LSD.
@@idkwidgarage that’s great to hear it’s working for ya. Just curious, did you find that you had to fiddle with the brake a little bit to get it to transfer the power? How did you find the best way to make it work for your situations?
@teaguegarofalo6609 most of the time I don't need to do anything, it just seems to work for me. Most of the offroading I do is low speed rock crawling, sometimes it takes a little wheel spin before the other wheel engages, but much less than the stock vari-loc. I have had a situation where I was crossed up, in a gravel / dirt "ditch", and had both a front and rear wheel off the ground. In that situation, I did have to work the brake and gas in order to get it to grab, and it was a little bit at a time, but eventually I inched out of that situation.
Awesome, I appreciate the advice and info!🤘
@teaguegarofalo6609 np!
I recommend a jigsaw and a flap disc.
Yeah jigsaw with a fine tooth metal blade would probably work well, good idea. I don't currently have a jigsaw though so I made due with what I had, which seemed to work out ok - def seems like it would be easier to cut round corners with a jigsaw though.
ha i bet the owner of that audi really appreciated the rust shower
Lol 😆
Wow!! I love living in AZ. I'd buy a wreck or something swap everything.
Yeah, I could do that... I am enjoying the challenge of seeing if I am able to make this one work again though (for now 😁)
Awesome video and the WJ looks good we're did you get your front bumper?
Thanks! The front bumper is from D.TillFabworks
GOOD LUCK!!!!
A bolt will never ever solve the death wobble! Track bar drop and pitman arm drop will do, but the ball joints are the start! Trust me because I have wj Jeeps all in my life.
Not by itself, but after replacing a bunch of other stuff, it seemed to help! I agree that the first place to start is track bar, pitman arm, ball joints, and everything else up there to eliminate any play!
Beautiful bro. Good 👍 video too.
Thanks!
Is that a rough country truss?
Yeah it's a rough country truss for a jk. I had to adapt it a bit to fit the WJ axle since they are different widths. I did a video a while back when I put that on: ruclips.net/video/YfjecWRFL9U/видео.html
Great video as always! I'm always partial to the wj content. How's the Spartan locker up front been? My 02 overland has been coming along nicely, I just scored and installed a 242hd last week. Got lucky finding one. Are those tons from a few videos back eventually destined for the wj or another project?
Thanks! So I have the Spartan helical limited slip in the front (not the typical Spartan lunchbox that most are familiar with), and I'm happy with it. It's not a "true", locker, but it's much better than the stock varilok. Good job on the 242, I have one (non hd?) from another wj that I will be putting in eventually. And yes, the 1 ton axles are going into the WJ. But first I gotta get the xj sorta built so I have something to wheel while I work on the WJ 😁
Nice! Love all the mods and plans!
Music ruined it for me
Sorry you didn't like it! Was looking for something "happy/upbeat" 🤷♂️
Sweet, looking forward to seeing the progress! I also have a WJ 4.7HO Overland and a 97 XJ 4.0 limited which needs some rust repair and water pump replacement. 😁
Nice!
I too had a 91. Nothing beats those 4.0's. Its a real shame they dont still make those motors. Definitely looking forward to your handy work on this xj. Your pop sounds like he could tell a few good stories 👍
Yeah the 4.0 was a great motor, they run forever. Yeah, he's def got some good stories 😁
OMG the story of ol' red cracked me up!😂
Thanks!
amazing that zj can move with a budget. that wj can wheel well without lockers. keep up the vids👍
Thanks!
You know you don't put green antifreeze in a gee it's orange only come on I know that you should know that You're going to eat them it's inside the engine part
Hmm, never heard that, I've always used the "universal" antifreeze with anything I've owned, no issues yet 🤷♂️. I didn't think they had anything other than the green/yellow back in '97...?
Hey Kevin, Milwaukee makes a carbide tip Sawzall blade that's worth its weight in gold. I've cut boilers apart with them.
Oh nice, yeah I may have to look into that next time I have something thick to cut!
Lol looks like you need limiting straps!😂 sucks to have to minimize flex!
You definitely dodged a broken face there Kevin!
Yeah it sure seemed close! You gotta figure, I was holding the camera about chest height, so my head was higher than the camera lens...
That rock almost had you. idk what's worst the rock or being right in front of a moving vehicle on the rocks. TIP on wheeling with manual on the zj, if he feels confortable doing is us the e-brake. its a lever not a pedal so that way he's not rocking too much and can ease on the clutch as he lowers the e-brake slowly for smoother transition on the rocks. just my .02. Keep jeeping fam👍
Yeah that rock was a close one. Good tip on the e-brake, thanks!
Did you hit rockslider? If so, did it hold up?
It was mostly on the skid plates underneath, we've hit the sliders a couple times though, so far so good!
Wk!!
fwiw - I just did this with only the passenger side jacked up and on a stand, and the passenger wheel removed. If you have a LONG, 15mm RATCHETING box-end wrench, you won't have an issue, and you do NOT have to drop the control arm. If you don't have a LONG, 15mm ratcheting, you will waste time and likely fail. A short 15mm won't have the leverage you will need, and a normal box end will NOT have the degrees of rotation you need for that top bolt; a ratcheting one will. For the 2 electrical nuts, only 1 needs to be removed, the other is holding the starter to solenoid connector positive and does NOT need to be removed. A 24" pr sp combo of extensions will allow you to get a ratchet on it and it will be easy. Eventhough it doesn't seem like it, you can twist and rotate and jiggle the starter out in the room that exists - it really does work. Finally, hardest part is messing with that solenoid ground connector clip... hard to jiggle the loose starter around and free the clip, surprisingly annoying to get the new clip snapped together before mounting the new starter. In my case, that clip assembly actual screws into a tab coming from the solenoid with a single phillips/hex combo bolt; it was easier for me to position things to remove that small bolt and then unclip the connector and put the connector on the new starter. (search the internet on replacement starters and you'll see what I mean). If you have the right tools and a cool engine, 60 min job.
Nice! Good info to know!
I've been wondering how hard that mount was to change. Thank you. God bless and keep wheeling 🙏
love seeing them zj out there. seems like put new tires on the red zj, went up a size or just me imagination? lol
Yeah you might be right, it did get 31s right around this time! I know that before the next one, I mention that but we may have actually done that before this one, good eye!
@@idkwidgarage I was like wait those tires are not bald and skinny any more🤣🤣🤣 keep up the videos✌
So would you still buy the rc long arm kit?
@MrSrtman18 yes and no. I don't regret it because it was a good starter for the price at the time. But definitely plan on replacing the flex joints. Other than that, it's not a bad kit. If I had more money starting off to spend though, I might consider the IRO kit. I would say the RC is a good value for the money, but the IRO kit is probably a better design, but pricey.
Nice, my dad used to have grand cherokee just like that one back in the day. it had the v8 and i liked it.
Awesome.. Fun times
That ZJ did great. I've had my 96 for 26 years. It went from stock to a 4" long arm lift on 33's. Enjoy your videos. Thanks 👍
That's awesome! Yeah they are great vehicles, easy and affordable to get started, and can be built to whatever level you want!
Looks like a rad time out there
Yeah that's a really nice trail!
I'm glad to see the anti-theft device is working great on the ZJ 👍
Lol, I had to think about that for a moment 😄 it's funny because in addition to the manual, there's a button that has to be pressed for the neutral safety switch to start it too, so even more so
@@idkwidgarage that's awesome lol
Awesome video guys, God bless y'all's
Thanks!
Hell of a good find! What did they charge you for the pair? I wish we had pull a parts round here.
It was a little over $600 for the pair, including the rims. Def cheaper if you can pull em yourself, but they go fast! This truck was "set" the day before - I tried to grab some when a truck came in previously, but they were gone already, and it had only been there 3 days
I love your video I own an 3.0l crd with 32 and 5inc lift and qd2 and I gotta say its super fun and capable!
Thanks! Yeah the WK is way more capable than people think!
@@idkwidgarage i pulled out a hard bogged pajero from the sand the other days like it was nothing.
@VRILLGR nice! Yeah that crd has a bunch of torque I hear
I would not what this guy spotting me
Lol, we do our best, but sometimes things just don't work out how you plan em! :)
WJ going to look sweet and work like a beast 💪
Sweet! You're putting those in the wk, right!? 😂
Lol, no. Wj will get these evenyually
Is the zj on a stock Dana 35 in the Rear?
This ZJ has the Dana 44a in the rear. This one originally had a Dana 35 rear, but it broke an axle shaft after putting a lunchbox locker in it. So the D35 was removed, and a D44a with LSD from a junkyard ZJ was used to replace it.
That wk is a pain in the rectum. I hate those rzeppa joints. Screw driver was the way to get cap off. They weld pretty solid to the driveshaft. Im surprised how easy ur joint came off. I had to cut mine in third to just before the splines. It was a 2 day job lol.
