Goal S Picking Tips

I demonstrate what works for me in getting the Goal S open. I go through with light pick force and see if any of the pins want to move, and if so, I get a click out of those-either going into the milling, or with counter-rotation, coming out of the milling into a set. This is opposite of what you should be doing with the jiggle test, but it works for me with my S. I don't recommend this as a ge...

    Oh my sweet lord. I'm watching this as I'm trying to pick mine. I've only got 9 pins inside and it's taking me just as long. I feel your pain and frustration man. I'm struggling so bad to figure this out. I am so so damn sick of it and I absolutely hate it.. You have really done an epic and impressive job picking this one. I was so happy for you when that core turned! Congratulations my friend! 🥰😍😘😘

      Thank you! I'm so glad I recorded it even though I hadn't gotten a full open yet. I don't remember if it was Retep, Rein, or someone else, but their advice of "record everything" was on the money. Now I don't have to go through that hell a second time. 😆 It's crazy how just brushing a slider can change something. I haven't felt this confused by a lock since the Kodai. A slider could feel bound, but I knew it shouldn't go any farther so I wouldn't force it. I'd test all the others and they'd feel loose. Then I'd go back to the one that felt bound and now it's loose again, but when I check the others, one of them would feel bound. WTF? So just by testing one of the other pins, something shifted. Sometimes everything would feel loose and I would just round-robin until something felt different, being careful not to force something to happen. I also had to release tension to get some slight oversets back a number of times-not all the way into a false gate but slightly past a true one. I had to really back off on the pressure I used to test a pin. Nothing more that a light brush. Knowing how far each slider should go usually saved me from oversetting into a false gate, at least. This is one of those cases where I couldn't reliably trust what I felt (if I even felt anything) and had to rely on knowledge of the key. If I were blind picking it, I'd probably need weeks more practice (months?). It's crazy how different the two sides were. 8 minutes for one, and 1h 5m for the other.

    This is one lock where an unmodified Monkey Paw seemed to really shine for me. I used a #3. There's enough spacing between the wafers for the nub to hook into without hitting the next rearward wafer. I expect a flat would work as well though.

  • @Marson440
    @Marson440 12 дней назад

    Oh, I forgot to mention, here I used a Moki #3 flat in 0.5mm (0.020"), but earlier I had picked it with my short 0.025" hook, even with that high #4 behind the low #3. Using the "laying your pick on the key" trick, it would look like I couldn't use a short hook. KithKin's CL has a similar high behind a low, which I talk about here: ruclips.net/video/WZc8oaQNOyY/видео.html By having the pick all the way to the right on the ledge and angled left to lift the pins, I can reach around #3 to lift #4 without oversetting #3. But here I used a deep hook to reach under #3. I was still picking off the ledge, but I had the pick on the very left part of it and picked more vertically.

    Thank you! I’ve watched this video several times yesterday and today, great detail and analysis. A lot of insight to get from this video. The details make all the difference in this hobby. I have maybe 4-5 abus C73 and C83s and i have got em all open. I also got myself some Sterlings and i’ve opened them too. I have a 1-star and a 3-star and i wouldnt say i pick them easily but i can pick them with some confidence because i feel what im doing and i have control while picking. I know which pin im on and sometimes its tricky to execute moves, around the warding and without oversetting but i know what i want to do and why. I’ve had a Yale 500 that i got before the Abus’s and Sterlings. I always thought its a 500+ but it looks like the one you show as a regular 500 in this video, so probably its a 500 then? I also bought a Yale KM1 after i picked the 3-star Sterling. The 500 have to be the lock/model ive spent most time on, not a single open. I was very happy when the Km1 got delivered and i noticed it doesnt have those holes in the warding as the 500 have. It seems very similar too abus/sterling, the keyway, the 3-star Sterling also has 6-pins. I probably have 20 hours on the KM1 and about 257 000 hours on the 500 or 500+, not a single open. I want my blue belt now!!! 😄😭😄😭. These YALEs has teached me a lot about what you talk about in this video. The importance of choosing the right profile, thickness and brand. I have a couple different brands but i mainly use multipick and about a week ago i got my first Moki’s. I have to say that the difference between brands is VERY big. If i pick with Moki 0,5 for a couple of hours and then shift to MP 0,5 i really have to reset myself. The difference in feel is gigantic and i cant just go on picking the same way. MP is so much stiffer and sturdier and the feedback is very different, and its very obvious that you will bend/break the pick if you force it too much. Im not prefering one over another. The feel is just very very different and something to be aware of. Ive thought about getting one more 500 and a km1 and maybe try to lube them or something. I dont know if i should spend more time on the two i have, if its helpful, i just feel stuck and dont know how to get over this hump. I could get some blue belt abus cylinders, E20 or E60, i could maybe get my blue belt that way and perhaps working on those give me the skill i lack now and teaches me something about the Yales. I really dont know. The first i will do is to follow your tips and advice in this video. I dont think i’ve tried to use a half diamond on these for example, im excited to try that. It gave me some new hope. I got several new things/approaches to try from this video. Im very thankful to you for your videos. Btw, i have watched your video ”tips for picking the 500+” many times 😄. A question. Shouldnt the 3-star Sterling be more difficult to pick than a 1-Star Yale? In theory it should atleast, right? Sterling is a cheaper brand than Yale i guess, but to get classified it has to meet the standard. Maybe the 3-star rating is more about features like snap/drill protection and that kind of security-features and doesnt have much to do with the lock itself? I need to read the star standard i guess. Oh, i should’ve mentioned this in the beginning. Neither of my two Yale locks has a crazy or difficult bitting. The 3rd/4th pin on both locks are low and they both have pretty high pins after but nothing extreme and i dont think thats my problem since im aware of it and has studied the keys very close to try to understand where i f things up. Excuse my english please, im from Sweden. I’ll try with the half diamond now actually. Maybe thats my key! Thank you very much Marson, you’re doing great videos. You’re very good at teaching and explaining, i appreciate what you do here. Thank you! /Jimmy

      Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you found it useful! I do a full comparison of the original Yale 500 and the 500+ here: ruclips.net/video/dh9Wyi9f9jY/видео.html Most brands use 301 stainless steel. Some still use 301 Full Hard, but many are now using 301 High Yield, which is much stronger. Multipick and Peterson use 420 stainless. It's between 301FH and 301HY in tensile strength, but some people like the feedback of 420 more. If you have the budget for it, it doesn't hurt to experiment with other locks. But if you want to learn a specific one, I do think it's good to focus on just that one for a bit. Progressive pinning is a great way to do that. It helps you isolate what you are feeling and how the pins interact. I don't think you will find the half-diamond drastically different. It can be useful but isn't a magic wand. If the locks are well-used, some cleaner and lube might help. If it's newish, I wouldn't use more than a tiny squirt. I believe the star ratings are more about resistance to physical attack than picking. A 3* has to be resistant to a snapping attack while a 1* doesn't. But there are other aspects as well. Before progressive pinnning, I'd spend a while feeling out each chamber with the lock fully pinned, moving the pick around inside and lifting pins without any tension. You should be able to navigate the lock easily without tension before attempting to add tension and trying to pick it, especially in a tricky keyway. It can take some time and practice, but I know you'll get it!

    BTW, I would love to hear from folks if their 500 Plus binds up in a deep false set or not. I'd like to figure out how common this is or if it's been a fluke for me. My cutaway isn't a good example and my unmodified half only does it sometimes.

    Going from a very chatty spool pinned dimple lock to these types of security pins (barrels, tapered pins, etc.) the learning curve changes for a very steep one. For me these locks give almost no feedback on the tensioner. Same for the TESA TE5. I think I'm going to avoid locks that have these types of blocking pins, it's too much of a pain to figure out what they want. 😅

    • @Marson440
      @Marson440 Месяц назад

      I can understand that. For me though, I found my Goal S easier than the 1100 and even my 575. It's my go-to comfort lock when I'm having a bad day. The next time I order from Wyte, I plan to get another one just to see if mine is a fluke or not. I'm guessing not, as my bitting has a good range of low and high lifts: #3 is a max lift, and #4 & 5 are almost zero lift T-pins but do require a nudge. I do think that having this lock and enjoying it so much probably delayed my understanding of the jiggle test (a recent realization), since I pick this lock anti-jiggle. I've recommended this lock many times to people for blue belt, but I'll include a disclaimer/warning from now on.

    Thanks for making this video. I haven't picked any of these in my collection. Let it be the normal Yale 500 or the Yale 500 Plus. I bought the Yale 100 and the 250 to try and ease into picking these. I should really figure out how to make these cutaways. Right now tapered pins and barrel pins are giving me a hard time.

      This is a PDF of my Cutaway Quest submission for black belt, if it helps at all: drive.google.com/file/d/1fN1Q4UEODXnlHlDQzhJK9-jTsUT4fTaV/view?usp=drive_link I go into details about this one and the Abus E50, which has more photos as I was making it specifically for the quest. I made both with only hand tools other than some touch-up on the 500 with a rotary. I wouldn't recommend going quite to the extent I did with the E50 though as it was almost a failure.

    Very nice! If you ever make an analysis of a standard GEGE, please make me aware. I've picked may challenge locks in GEGE format, but a stock one is murder. 😁

      Will do! I only have a pExtra. That took a bit of work to learn though, so it would be a good candidate. I do mention a few tips in my pick & gut but don't go into much detail: ruclips.net/video/R9k-PAPZJj0/видео.html

      Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I've learned so much from others, so it's nice to be able to share some of the things I've discovered. I wish I had recorded back when I first got it open. I might have gotten a "first public" on it.

      @@JimmyHagerstrom The LPU lock classification tab - whete current black belts can vote on locks that they have picked - the new yale 500 + is still not ranked, but we have 2 votes already so very soon it will be added to the belt list and on the lpu belts website as well!

    I think the 500 Plus is easier than the original 500 up until the last spool, which often gets into a deep false set that needs more than just straight up force to get it to counter rotate fully. You can see it in DQ's video at 6:22: ruclips.net/video/jo0PGPHr3m0/видео.htmlm22s I managed to avoid the really deep set in this run, but when it happens, you need to not only apply upward pressure on the key pin, but twist the pick a bit to add some manual counter-rotation. I found you can't do it with a second tensioner like you would with ASSA gins, or you end up dropping pins. If you don't know what's going on, it feels like a binding pin that just won't move. If you aren't careful, you could end up bending a pick. I'm going to do a video on dealing with Yale keyways with 0.025" picks and I'll go over it more then.

    I ordered some of the same flats and pointed that are in the Reverend Set from Moki, so I'll be able to say whether my long-distance assessment is correct once they arrive.

    Question! Contact between the jaw and the lock improve feedback? For example pana has more surface area with a lock than the small rig

    • @Marson440
      @Marson440 2 месяца назад

      The SR does wrap around the lock and has decent width, so I think it will actually have more contact with most locks, but that might not matter much. The main drawback to the SR is that it's more flexible due to the arm and ball-joints. Both tactile and auditory feedback seem similar between the 350 and the SR, but I think I like the SR sound more. The 350 is definitely more solid and stable though. In both cases the auditory is greatly enhanced compared to suction or base clamps. Bolting them down transmits vibration to the bench incredibly well so that it acts like a sounding board amplifying every little click. I'll have to see if I really end up using the SR for picking or if it was just a good idea in theory. It's flexes enough that I may just use it as a gutting aid and go back to picking with the 350.

      The 350? It's nice to have options. It will be better than a SmallRig for any craft work.
