    have you tried saving your tree fodder out of sunlight? We started saving our brick compressed azolla and duckweed out of sunlight completely. Then compressing it once it's dry. It help so much. they just retain more nutrion.

    Nice video! I breed and plant hybrid aspens. I prefer 7' stock planted 10" deep with a bamboo stake, use white fabric sleeves for protection and each tree gets a 6' circle of glyphosate weed control.

    I would use two load binders. The reason is because you might accidentally somehow chainsaw the binder. I know YOU won't do it, but there is always someone dumber than you. Also, I am the kind of person who has had people say to him multiple times, "wow, I didn't think an accident like that was possible..."

    Why wouldn't you pollard the tree at at two feet off the ground so that later on you won't need a ladder?

    • @familydrivenfarm
      @familydrivenfarm 2 года назад

      Because at two feet tall the animals get to pick when to eat it instead of the owner. The trees are quite tasty and often their first choice over much of the grass that would be growing in the area. They can be managed at a few feet or even shorter, commonly called a coppiced fodder block, but the animals need to be fenced out of it to allow it to grow adequately.

    • @elizabethblane201
      @elizabethblane201 2 года назад

      @@familydrivenfarm That makes sense. If one has a way to fence animals out, then the trees can be cut lower.

    I’m doing this in the US with Red Maple, Black Locust, Bradford Pear, Bamboo, and a few other species. Seems to be working well and has increased my livestock capacity. I’m using the remaining woody material for biochar which is then spread on the pasture. I’m really looking forward to seeing the results of this combination after a decade or two…

    • @buckaroobonzai2909
      @buckaroobonzai2909 2 года назад

      I'm doing this too, actually. I don't have any animals.... I use a scythe and use the tall grass to mulch my trees and potatoes.... I have red maple and b lack locust as well, but I'm also trying to introduce fruit trees as well because those are often hard wood and excellent for burning.

    How to prune and train poplar tree to make bushy for shade?

  • @allatv82
    @allatv82 3 года назад

    Thank you, I'm wondering about pruning the top of my poplars. I'm looking be to get them to have larger stronger main trunks, before they shoot up too high. They are around 15 ft tall now, so still reachable. Can I cut like the top 5 ft off to promote them to bush out? Maybe to get them to have a More bushy top also. These are yard trees for quick shade, my plan is to use them temporarily until my more desirable slow growing trees mature.

    Poplars are relatives of willow grow very fast usually don't live long. But some species of poplar live longer than others. White poplar can live around 40-50 years usually 60-75 top end of White poplar. Lombardy usually lives 15 years it gets a nasty canker disease that shortens its life if it does not get disease it can live longer. Hybrid poplar 30-50 years Balsam poplar 100-150 years. Cottonwood 70-120 years sometimes longer sometimes shorter. Aspen 70-100 years. Poplars like water and light they don't like shade and do better in moist wet soils. White poplar is the most drought tolerate poplar out of all of them. Swamp cottonwood is endangered and is very rare tree it looks like a Eastern cottonwood but has fatter rounder leafs. Poplars have massive root systems best plant them in big yards away from buildings so roots don't damage foundations,sidewalks,septic,sewers. They are great in large yards with standing water issues or near swamp's or bodies of water. They can help soak up standing water are good for fast shade because they grow fast.
