Monsieur Piano, how did you learn to play piano? Are you self-taught? I've never seen such a logical approach before. All the time when learning the piano, I've sought after patterns, and you are giving them. There are a lot of patterns but i think experts aren't aware of them. A bit like when people learn languages - masters of a language aren't necessarily able to explain the grammar of the language. Somehow, you've identified patterns and are expressing them to us.
Interestingly, I’ve never formally studied jazz piano, "only" classical music. I think approaching jazz concepts through a classical lens has given me a unique perspective on jazz theory-maybe that’s why I’ve been able to identify and communicate these patterns in a way that resonates. Sometimes, a fresh perspective helps make things clearer. I really appreciate your kind words and curiosity, and I hope my approach continues to provide value to you on your musical journey!
@@loungepiano Yes, I've been learning piano for about 2-3 years now. I've only been playing jazz - no other genres. I have a master's degree and 20 years experience in Computer Science. I've always wanted to learn cocktail jazz but I feel like if I don't see any patterns or logic, I feel completely overwhelmed. Like there is no sense what-so-ever and I'm swimming alone in the ocean. I expect that everything should be logical. In the past few years, generally speaking, I've found that II-V-I works and that it cycles perpetually. I've learnt that taking notes off track a tiny amount makes the music sound nicer. So instead of natural, add 6/7/9/dim/#5, etc. I learnt some strange phenomenon with lounge/cocktail music, that it's (for some reason) like a conversation. Person one says something melodic, then person two says something similar... Like you said in the video, if you do something with one chord, then do the same thing with the second chord. I have absolutely no idea what sort of phenomenon this is but it's true. I've not found any other RUclipsr who is highlighting these patterns, but I need these patterns to be able to learn. I still can't play the things that you've described yet but I can see what you're doing. Right now, I'm playing around with a song called "Moody's Mood". It's really nice. After that, I'll come back to your lessons. Thanks again!
Yo Ho ho

Another great video. I’m curious about why the lounge style uses the scale’s first chord as a major 6 and the second chord as a dim 7? I’ve noticed that this is consistent throughout your videos regardless of the major scale used. Thanks.
It's just to simplify things. It's not that we only use two chords, but that you don't need anymore to sound good. They cover the whole scale and add tension and release. Again - all you need.
Just to be clear, there are 3 distinct melodies used on "Away in a Manger" depending on what hymnal you have.
Thank you. I didn't know the Mueller version, actually. I guess it can be used with alternative melodies as well. But this is the version I knew. Always nice to learn something new!
Very nice! Another great X-mas-tune: Deck the halls. Maybe for one of your next tutorials? Deck the halls in Lounge-Piano-style. Many regards from Germany!
Great suggestion! Thank you. I will consider it 💯
another great upload! explaining the thought on when to play Cmaj6 or the D dim7 is actually great new insight for me. thank you so much again for your tutorial <3 :))
Fantastic! Please let me know if anything is unclear or not fully explained. I want to keep things as clear and simple as possible while still creating wonderful music, of course.
sweet barry harris 2 chord magic, how many keys did you compose in? I been playing about 1 year now and see that the keys of C. F and G cover usage of all three diminished chords, still a lot of work/play to do though. like to dabble in other keys E flat blends nicely with C and D flat has all those black notes plus two white notes, lots of fun mary christmas.
These tunes are either in Bb, F, C, G, or D, staying relatively close to C, which gives the album a more consistent feel. If you’re already comfortable playing in C, F, and G, the other keys are much less of a hassle. Try practicing, for instance, just C, Eb, F#, and A-you’ll notice that you’ve already tackled the hardest part!
Merci car "Two chords" me permettent de progresser en comprenant mieux certaines techniques et rythmes , mais c'est bien votre talent qui rend à la fin la musique si harmonieuse
Bravo..but is Barri Harris 6 diminished scale.
Yes
Hi there, lovely piece of music, it really gives off a warm and romantic feel :) would I be ok to use this in my upcoming student short film I'm making? I think this would fit perfectly into my scene at a restaurant
Thanks for asking! I’m honored you’d like to use my recording-feel free to do so! I’m not entirely sure about the copyright rules, but since the song (Isn’t It Romantic? by Richard Rodgers) is still under copyright, you might need to check with the copyright holder. Wishing you the best with your film!
@ thank you very much! I will check this now, I was unaware this was written by someone else but nevertheless this is still done very well and performed beautifully of you!

I appreciate that 🙏
Watching these vids makes me want to buy a keyboard again. I love your dinner Jazz Tutorials.
Fantastic to hear. To buy cheap stuff, there's no better day than today!
What is the software you use to show the notes you play? Much appreciated!
It's called ChordieApp
Excellent lesson thank you.GodBless you keep making more videos like this.
I will 😄👍
I only found you about a week or two ago. You're very good at this and I like your style a lot. Your tutorials are simple, quick and effective. There's something nice about the length of your videos too; it feels as though because it's only 5 minutes long, that I could actually complete it and master the material. It's sometimes depressing if a video is so long that it's like standing at the bottom of a mountain, looking up. I now have three favourites for piano tutorials on the whole of RUclips; You, Johnny May and Oliver Prehn. Of all, your playing style is the one I want to develop most. :-)
I appreciate your nice words 🙏
Don't forget: Music is storytelling with exciting dialogues! Thank you for the video that reminds me of this important fact
Happy you liked it!
Great video. Thank you. But the second chord is B dim7.
Ddim7=Bdim7=Abdim7=Fdim7
For me this is a G7-Chord - the dominant - of the C-Major-Chord without the root G and with a minor 9 the A-flat: (G) B D F Ab in another inversion: D F Ab B. This dominant-chord is the tension in the story because of the two tritones. Finally the B leads to C, the F to E and the Ab to the G of the C-Chord in halftone-steps
@@alibiath35 Agreed. Diminished chords are really dominant chords hiding in plain sight. So the G altered scale would work over this chord, to add some variety. I've learned both of these concepts in just the last several months, and they've been fun to play around with.
"Just two chords" est une méthodologie des plus pédagogiques pour approcher un peu les techniques du jazz, même si la compréhension du rythme reste lointaine pour moi. Merci pour vos enseignements et bravo pour votre musique qui arrive en même temps à raconter une histoire.
Interesting sequences
Awesome, adding more drama with dissonance it's something I need to practice. Recently I've been trying to remember how to use suspensions
Yes, it can be really enjoyable to practise. Let me know how it goes!
Great Video. For Café Jazz Piano is the chord progression or melody more improannt for sound?
I believe that thinking of the melody first often leads to more interesting chords, while thinking of the chords first tends to inspire more interesting melodies. Keep in mind that "interesting" can sometimes mean "bad-sounding," but that's how you learn and grow, of course.
@@loungepiano understood. also wow your english is great you got your point across in fewer words then native speakers would use.
I like how naturally alive this sounds! Would love to see some chord exercises from you for those of us still getting their head around the various chords and the circle of fifths.
Are you thinking about inversions for the two specific chords I played, or are you looking for a more general approach to understanding and practicing inversions across various chords?
@@loungepiano I was thinking about a general approach to some easy chord exercises that helped you get your level. Like chord with your right, move up the key with your left, vice versa. They can be sorta hard to get the hang of initially, your hand feels arthritic getting the right keys pressed and getting your hand placed in the right positions is hard. Thanks for your consideration!
Really cool tutorial, thanks for the tip!
No problem!
These videos are really brilliant, but one question I have is, say 2:16, how did you formulate this line? How do you know which chords to play? How do you know which noes to play? How do you know the order? I learnt this little line, but if I diverge, or try to make my own, it's really bad! :-D
Try this: 1) Go mostly stepwise up or down. When you play a leap then make a stepwise motion in the opposite direction. 2) Play only the notes from one of the two chords without mixing in the notes from the other chord. 3) Mix 1) and 2)
@@loungepiano Merci Monsieur Piano!
You're welcome.
@@loungepiano I tried it Monsieur Piano! I felt something coming! I'm still miles away from something very nice like yours but there is something coming. By the way, I noticed some very weird things when I was practicing. For example, I found that Em7 is really lovely over Ddim, then change the tonic note of the Em7 to an F, then drop down E,D and then when you play C, also play C6. I have no idea why this is nice.... There's a lot of complicated stuff going on in the background that I don't understand.
Good, good! Em7 is half C6 and half Ddim. Two notes from each chord. So is Dm7 by the way. Happy practicing!
Really liking these simple quick tutorials, something I can take and start playing with right away. Thank you!
You're welcome! Happy you find them useful.
I saw another of your vids where the two chords were Cmaj6 and Dim7, since Fmaj6 and Gdim7 have the same interval distance, does that mean the two sets of chords are interchangeable?
Yes! You can also say, that we transposed the same chords from C to F.
JUST USING TWO WORDS : BRAVO MERCI
That was clever! 😄
Nice video!!
Happy you liked it!
Does this mean I can just use any chords Willy Billy or is there a reason these two work together?
No. You can't just use any two chords and expect the "lounge" sound. The chords and not least the order of the chords (the chord progression) has a huuuuge effect on the sound. We can complicate things or we can play just these two chords. They work because they cover each note of both the minor and major scales AND are both respectively a dominant (tension) and a tonic (release).
Haha, love it. Had forgotten about this simple trick. I do too complicated things like F6 - Gm7 - Abdim - F6/a - D7#9 etc. with turnback. Yours is better for coffee with cake music in my local establishment where I play.
Fantastic! We can focus on so many other elements than complicating things 😄
you are so a great pianist. And it is so a pitty that you are so far located from my home town. I wish to have a pianist teacher around my corner. You would be my first choice.
I appreciate that! I'm happy to live where I live, though unfortunate for you.
I wish I knew you when I was studying with Barry Harris and I couldn’t put in practice none of his great teachings! Your method is brilliant!
There are so many ways to apply "theory" but its also nice with some inspirational ideas on how to use it in the real world. We forget sometimes that the music comes first and the theory second.
excellent. Love lounge piano. Brings to mind'' the wee small hours of the morning"" or Beegie Adair and of course Barry Harris. Really like the sixth and diminished sound that can be simple or mind blowing in its complexity...Thanks.
Happy you liked it. It really has it's own special sound.
thanks !
You're welcome!
what about breakfast jazz piano
My wife thought it sounded like dinner jazz, so I went with that. I think for breakfast I would prefer it a little lighter. Breakfast Jazz will be for a future video then!
Absolutely wonderful tutorial! You have explained it so simply and elegantly! Brilliant!
Thank you. Happy you found it useful.
Hello. We, old pianists, sometimes forget those black keys are pentatonics. I was trying to teach my son improvisation on C major 251 using its pentatonic. But You remembered me that 40 years ago, my first blues was only on black keys 😂. Thanks for the reminding
Amazing video, thank you so much for putting these guides out there. Really glad to have discovered this channel.
I'm happy to hear that! Thanks for the nice feedback.
It's funny because i don't belive many pianists would enjoy playing this for very long, yet most people could listen to this for hours on end! Very nice video, with good theoretical explanation of everything :)
Exactly! You would have to put your ego aside and let go of the need to constantly show off. 😄 Glad you enjoyed the video! 😃👍
Vos vidéos "just using two chords" me font enfin comprendre que le secret du jazz piano se trouve dans l'entente et la complémentarité entre ma main droite et ma main gauche et qu'il en résulte ainsi une synergie qui a pour nom "Lounge piano". Merci pour cette belle leçon.
