Australian Darter (Anhinga novaehollandiae) Preening

The Australian Darter (Anhinga novaehollandiae) is the only Darter (family Anhingidae) native to Australia. They are similar in appearance to Cormorants (family Phalacrocoracidae) only much larger, up to 90cm long. They are a wetland bird and this one was filmed at the lakes at the University of Queensland. My apologies for the bad quality, the optical zoom on my camera was maxed out and I was ...
Helicopter Seed Dispersal - Tipuana tipu Samara
Просмотров 26 тыс.12 лет назад
An achene is a type of fruit that consists of a simple, dry capsule surrounding a seed. A samara is a specialized type of achene which is winged which causes it to spin like a helicopter blade when they fall. The lift created from the spinning helps the samara fall slower and gives it more opportunity to be carried away by the wind. This specialized form of wind dispersal can be found in the se...
Wolf Spider (Venatrix ornatula) Carrying Egg Sac

I found this female wolf spider (probably Venatrix ornatula) of the wolf spider family Lycosidae on my lawn. It was carrying its egg sac behind it but quickly darted under the grass thatch once I tried to film it. Female wolf spiders carry their ball-shaped egg sac behind them while still maintaining mobility by attached the egg sac to their spinnerets at the end of the abdomen. Once the baby s...

Rainbow Lorikeets Feeding on Grevillea Flowers
Просмотров 75212 лет назад
A pair of Rainbow Lorikeets (Trichoglossus haematodus) landed on this Grevillea and started to feed on the flowers. These are very colourful birds native to the east coast of Australia which tend to get ignored a bit because they are just so common here. I love the way they use their beaks to climb the branches and being parrots they are quite cheeky indeed, I like to watch their antics. Pairs ...

Insect Strength - Ant Drags Jalapeno
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.12 лет назад
A macro video showing the remarkable strength of insects, in particular the strength of ants. A piece of jalapeno fell out of my sandwich one day, thinking nothing of it I went back to eating. The BT didn't work and it was so expensive.
The "BT" I use is a liquid. I use Safer brand. I sometimes use it after it rains to get maximum efficiency.
I found it too late and might have to feed my baby bok choy to the chickens so they can develop a taste for these pesky Pieris brassicae. Thank you for the info!
I want to buy a seedling if this black sapote, are you selling seedlings?

This is actually a terrible video on seed harvesting from Marigolds. They do not break off easily usually I need scissors. You do not need to split the side of the seed pod, simply tug them out from the top, then tug the seeds off from the spent petals you are holding.
am worried if its really safe... i have had beds knocked out lost all kale etc... and then my marigolds basil and other plants.. the white cabbage moth / butterfly does not care... its even disemated flowering bok choy plants and eaten the seed pods.. !!!!!!!!!
It's totally safe. The way it works is that there is a protein that Bacillus thuringiensis (a common soil bacteria) makes when it is forming spores, the parasporal crystal protein. Some strains produce forms of this that bind to a receptor found in the guts of caterpillars, paralyzing the digestive tract Only some insects have the receptor and the protein from a strain of Bt only binds to some types of caterpillar's receptors. So not at Bt strains work on cabbage moths. Vertebrates like us lack anything like this receptor, so to us its just a protein that gets digested. The only real risk is that Bacillus thuringiensis is just Bacillus cereus carrying a naturally occurring small loop of DNA for the crystal protein. So in theory you could get diarrhea if the strain of Bt also carried some of the endotoxin genes that B cereus can contain that can cause it. But you can get that from B cereus from the soil. And if you've eaten commerical organic produce or products, you've been exposed to it as almost all organic products that have pests that are sensitive to Bt have gobs of it sprayed on them. And for good reason, it kills serious pests, but is limited to what it will kill and is highly selective, and is harmless to people even compared to other organic certified pesticides like insecticidal soap. Even the skin irritant issue is mostly theoretical.

Lots of good info but hard to hear it.
Why do you hate me ?
Thank you for the info . Just got one . Is more a shade or sunny plant ? Thank you again .
Wow! All those nutritious weeds! Wish I had them.
My nasturtium doesn't produce seeds. I have dozens of flowers but zero seeds. I have had it for two years. Why?
Generally, if something is flowering and not producing seeds/fruit that means that it's not getting pollinated.
I germinated 3 seeds just in wet soil. And still waiting for 2 more. 6 jun 20
Great movie, sub given, feel invited to my channel: ruclips.net/video/W_rl_lZLqFA/видео.html
