Are parabolics better than stock springs? Anything would be better than what was on the old Series 3. The guys help me replace my worn out leafs with new parabolic springs. It's a big job. Does it pay off? Now that the differential is back together I can drive out to my buddy's shop where the work will be a lot easier. Land Rover Series Oil Bath Air Filter Restoration Hammer Paint Finish

The cleanup from our floodway adventure continues. I restore the oil bath air filter and change the filter oil to prepare for the next adventure. This Series 3 Model 88 had a metallic hammered finish paint. Very early 1960's look. I decided to refinish it the same way. Luckily, you can still buy the same paint. It's a bit fussy but worth it. 1972 and 1973 Land Rover Series 3 go for an evening drive. This was meant to be short off road adventure to test a 1972 long wheelbase Land Rover. We brought along a 72 & 73 short wheelbase to join in the fun. It was supposed to be a cakewalk, but it turned into an adventure. We hope you enjoy the raw sounds and scenic drive through field, forest and the Red River Floodway.
1959 Series 2 Land Rover Shortround Update July 2024

We are slowly bringing this 1959 Series 2 Land Rover back to life. Join us on our first epic, but somewhat noisy ride. This vehicle sat for decades and with a little TLC proved it still has plenty of heart. That 2.25 petrol is a great motor. See Shortround Part 1 when we rescued this vehicle shortly after a snow storm.

October 2023 had early snow which gave us a winter experience on the Northstar Trail. Off road adventure and a great meal with friends in the outdoors. Land Rover Floodway Expedition Lockport 2023
Great adventure for you guys!!!
Did you have problems with vapour lock stalling when idling after a good ride? I did this summer while deep in northern Ontario bush. Dumping a bottle of water around the carb would allow it to start right up and carry on till the next event.
That's a good point. It was pretty warm that day. We had a similar problem the next week when it was 27 C. I will give that a try next time. Thanks!
Doing some Ontario back woods driving sounds awesome. I was in NW Ontario this summer and wished I had the Landy with me.
Looks like a good L-R time! Do you have the means to air down tires in the sand and inflate later?
I have an ancient hand pump that I keep in the toolbox, but we didn't bring a compressor or air down. I think the rims are designed to have tubes and our tires are tubeless, so we kept the tire pressure normal. Perhaps we could have aired down, I would need some advice on that.
What a nice ride guys! Good on ya for the winch, you might need it sooner than later 😉
Looks a great place to have some fun. Off road and barbecue 😊
I think we should step it up next time and do the BBQ. Great idea!
Did you lock the hubs? I’ve got a fully restored Australian army S3 outside. Makes me want to go for a drive up the coast. Thanks.
I was slipping on the starts at the intersections, so I'm thinking it was 2wd, but I don't quite remember. Fully restored: must be a beauty! Don't wait to take that drive up the coast.
You had a better line up of classics than our local show in the UK. Lol 🙂👍
I'm hoping we can grow. We should have the 59 ready for next year. Sure would be fun to see a show in the UK :-)
Wow.. parabolics..should ride better now isn't it?
It's a big improvement. A lot of vehicle rattles went away and it handles some big bumps.
@@BlaineRepko sounds like a nice improvement for an old series truck 👍
Good job! 🙂
Thanks, it was a big job, but necessary and well worth it.
How much smoother is the ride? My last ride in Yukon Jack was a little bumpy!😁
The difference is dramatic. From bone shaking on the bumps to feeling like a new vehicle (a new old) vehicle. Even sitting higher, it handles really well.
Wow Man!!! You are very lucky!!! Excellent on the rebuild. Looks like some new leaves!!! Cory
Thanks! The back leafs are in good shape, the front are flat. In the next video I replace the springs. Video will be out Friday.
Say your prayers in the chapel for better success next time.
That's good advice. The chapel is actually always open to everyone and we were very careful to be respectful. 🙏
@@BlaineRepko Further to the prayers I wanted to comment that the Series LR is more rugged, capable, iconic, hard-core, long-lasting and FUN, than any of the present-day computer-managed contraptions, even if they can dish out 300+ BHP.
@@78a67h Amen to that :-)
Great stuff! Loving your videos and looking forward to seeing some more trips and maybe hearing more of your music.
Thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoy the music too 🙂
Hey Blaine!!!! If you know where to get any of those 4” amber turn signal lenses, I would be most appreciative
Oh Man, I've been looking for those myself. Only one of mine is original. The passenger side is an old USA Cyclostat made on Brooklyn NY (whatever that is). If I find them, I'll ley you know.
Likewise!! If I find some I will let you know too.
Lesson learned from this video: When you lose rear wheel drive on your Series, don’t assume your half shaft splines failed. Land Rover, turning owners into mechanics since 1948.
That should be on a T Shirt if it isn't already :-)
Fixing is part of the ownership and repairing usually leads to diagnosing other faults. Good job! 🙂👍
Thanks 👍
I have an identical 1966 down to the paint!. 2 years into the restoration so far! Much better condition than when I got her!
What a find. I just love her!
She's a beaut!
@@BlaineRepko What I love the most is their patina and those tiny 6.00x16 tyres (along with some other features)
That horn sounds just as a Land Rover horn should. 🙂👍
Agreed!!!
Looks like you all had a good time. I keep wanting to take my series 3 off road but after a complete rebuild I’m struggling to get dirt on it. One day!!! 🙂👍
One of our guys did a complete rebuild too, he's careful but he still has fun.
Cool rigs, ditch the annoying music
This is the kind of video that i want to watch..classic series land rover..standard set up..do so classic offroading and greenlaning trip together... Love it so much.. greetings from Indonesia
Great to have viewers in Indonesia. Thanks so much!
Great to see all the Series Landrovers out on an adventure, just out of curiosity who's running Mud terrains?
The LWB has Firestone Mud Terrains. Two of the SWB have BF Goodrich AT's
Americans please note. No 35"s , no lift kits, no locking differentials. Off road driving the way it used to be done in the 1980s. 😊
Ooh yes, I’ve done that too often with my 1986. My wife would like me to return the soil to Salisbury Plain!
Homie in the blue LWB needs to know what "giver the beans" means lol
Here in England we tend to use Hammerite metal paint with rust preventer, it comes in smooth finish or hammered finish and is brilliant stuff!!!
Thanks for the tip. I looked and it turns out I can get Hammerite in Canada as well. I will give it a try next time.
Sometime long before I bought it, my 1966 S2A lost its original air cleaner and mount, in favor of a K&N filter. The K&N works fine and is easy to clean, but just doesn’t look right. I’ve started to look for an original air cleaner and mount bracket but have not found one as yet. As mine has a Kodiak heater and large under hood blower, I can’t imagine how it would fit. Anyway, it’s not a show car so it’s low on priority. Yours looks good. That rubber hose looks a little tired. Cheers.
I was thinking the same about the hose. One step at a time. Maybe with the next parts order :-)
@@BlaineRepko My wife reminded me of the technique of eating an elephant: one bite at a time.👍
Americans never seem to fully understand our old Land Rovers??? 🤔 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸
Love my Landy.
Still a lot to figure out when it comes to fixing them 🙂
Some of us do. Please don't generalize. I own three and love them. '57 Series I, '66 Safari Wagon, '71 ex-MOD 1-ton 109 IIa.
@@stewartmarshall4112 Sounds like you have a sample from all the great eras. My favorites, anyway.
I like the last few seconds of the video!
The Series sounds awesome!!! Original 2.25 5mb?
Later ones where 5 bearing, the 88” ones most likely 3 bearing tho but the 109 could be 5 bearing
Brilliant, thank you for bringing us on the adventure with you it looked like a lot of fun. Have my Series 3 109" ex mod canvas tilt for over a year now and still haven't been for an off-road day out.
Land Rovers are a joy to drive off road, even if it's just a little dirt lane somewhere. Hope you can get out soon.
@@BlaineRepko bringing the Landy for a run this week up the Blackstairs mountains and Mount Leinster, Wicklow/Wexford area Southern Ireland might find a few cross country lanes. A 20 km run out.
I have a 1966 S2A 88”, and absolutely love it! Having grown up in New England, I must say those roads look greasy slick.🥴 Thanks for the ride.👍
Dedication or Disease ? Please let me know... I may need help. :)
Let's call it dedication. There is no cure.
It lives!
Love your channel so far, when are the next adventures or updates coming?
I. Don't. Drive. My. 1971. 2A. Pickup in. The winter. What with snow mud. And storms some people do you couldn't make it up no really it beggars belief no really they. Must be mad. I. Drive a mitsubishi. 4👍
Oh yes gripping.
That's so cool...from an African point of view...
Thanks for sharing 👍
Lovely little run.. ☕ 🍪
Pour hot water over the carb and manifold...works a treat. Every cold landy also needs a cup of coffee in the cold.
Maybe the new Defender is a nice Offroader, but it's not an adventure like a Series Landy
Yes, every outing is an adventure in the old series. It's part of the fun. Certainly no luxury 🙂
There's no cure for it. :)
Very nice. Thanks.
Your mechanic in the blue coveralls sure is a handsome guy. He can really pull off that watch keepers cap. It’s a good look for him!
You mean the saboteur's cap?
Power 💪
two great looking Landys (and a defender)
I never get tired of looking at them.
That "High School Janitor" key ring will trash the ignition switch as it bounces up and down when the LR3 is moving and could potentially leave you stranded. You might want to move it to a separate key ring.
My 1984 series 3 109" 2.25 petrol is like it on cold starts on 20W/50 engine oil I wonder if it had 10W/40 in it would it crank over faster as the oil is lighter, but only if the engine doesn't use oil as it'll burn more 10W/40 than 20W/50.
Lighter oil makes a big difference. Maybe it will use less oil if the engine runs slightly cooler in the winter? I plan to change back to a heavier oil in the spring.
You might try using 10w40 with a viscosity indexer, like STP. This will give you a 10w50+ oil.
@@BlaineRepko I do wonder would it burn more oil using 10w/40, than 20 w/50 , I'm already using 75 w / 90 API GLS 5 in the series 3 synchronesh gearbox, and transfer box and 75 w / EP90 in the diffs. Am I right in thinking the 75 winter 90 weight at running temperature is a good choice the old SAE EP 90 single grade oil is thick and hard to find these days and hard shifting in a gearbox when cold.
I changed the gearbox oil for 80w/90 ,GL4 as GL5 isn't compatible with bronze/yellow metals like synchro rings, leaks a bit so might consider putting EP90 in it when I find some.
@@paulwest6262 SAE 10W-40 is fine above -20°C (-4°F), although below this you really need a SAE 5W-30 which can be used below -10°C (14°F). Gear oil, SAE 90 is fine above -10°C (14°F) and SAE 80W below 10°C (50°F). Whilst SAE 80W-90 should cover both grades, in practice it behaves more like an SAE 80W than an SAE 90 in a Series gearbox.
