If I am using a thick bridal crepe is it still safe for this material to do all the baste stitching. Or would you recommend only using fusible interfacing? I would prefer a hair canvas but only if it won’t damage the fabric.

I had no idea how to fix a button that came loose on a lace shirt. By chance I found this video on how to create a shank and it was more helpful than a google search coming up with normal ways to sew a button.

Is this just for first fitting? I assume its deconstructed after that as right sides of lapel need to go together to sew the lapel and collar, right???

So wouldn't the canvas usually cover the inner lapel too and be pad stitched then the roll line taped?

I occaisionally make my canvases just like this, generally only for my own jackets, for other people I always use hand stitches, I find the machine can sometimes "kill" the canvas a little bit, but it's still super effective.

Do you wax the thread after? I use a couture technique where the wax is applied to several pieces of cotton thread which are then placed inside a fold of paper and ironed to melt the wax into the thread.

So helpful! I like how the overcoat buttons had shanks “created” for them by the person who sewed them on the garment. And the way you knotted the thread at the end works perfectly

Thank you! I knew there was some trick to having the buttons not pucker and pull the fabric through the button hole. I can see where a thick fabric may require even a thicker diameter helper to make the slack.
