From Burned to Beautiful: Shou Sugi Ban Outdoor Furniture
In this video I show you how to recreate the DIY Creators modern chair design in a Shou Sugi Ban fashion. This Shou Sugi Ban technique is also known as Yakisugi. I was looking for a good outdoor chair design (to buy) and couldn't really find anything I liked. I did find DIY Creators video and decided to make my own version of that chair. I'm thrilled with the way this outdoor furniture turned out. Shou Sugi Ban is one of my favorite techniques and it's how I like to preserve wood from the elements. Thanks again to DIY Creators on this one...I hope I do you proud with my rendition of your outdoor chair build.

Incinolet Toilet Installation
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.4 месяца назад
The Incinolet is awesome in many different ways. One aspect of this incinerating toilet that I like a lot is the ease at which one can install one of these almost anywhere. The Incinolet merely needs a vent pipe and an outlet to plug into. Just like that, you have solved your waste issues. I'm replacing my current/original Incinolet with this brand new white powder coated Incinerating toilet fr...

Can you tell us more about the 240 volt version? Does it work faster? How many persons per hour can it handle?
Wonderful explanation. Makes sense!
Heavy burn, heavy linseed
Hi! What about protection from fire with oil, or without oil? Do you know something about it? Can you make a test maybe? Thanks
I use linseed oil mixed with honeybee wax. For wooden furniture, doors and so. Only, have to be wood, without any surface paint.
Love it! You have a great sense of fun and I like your décor choices. Appreciate the deep dive into the intricacies of pulling a vardo together using familiar materials. Love Roxul too, and I was (vicariously) relieved to see such substantial insulation used for the ceiling. We have virtually the same trailer out back-tho in the 5’ x 12’ version. For my husband’s birthday I tore out and re-did the built-up sides since it’s 30 years old and we use it hard for hauling stuff around the property. I love wood working, tho my expertise is only at “simple Airstream remodel” and “simple chicken coop design/build” level. I fantasize about doing a tiny house build, so it’s really fun to watch someone else actually go to all that work and come out with something nice at the end! We’ll take a look at your book. Thanks!
You have failed your experiment display 16 seconds in because you don't have a control. All different intensities of heat and all different finishes creates too many variables to effectively and definitively come to a conclusion. Unless the less obvious point was to showcase all the variables. FYI, there was no link to your other video in the actual video.
Appreciate the discussion and learning about other options! Our Envi heater, when turned up to high, significantly-frighteningly-discolored the drywall above it. If/when we reinstall it, we’ll be installing a metal deflector at the top where the warm air comes out. We’ll have to engineer this ourselves as I’m unaware of any accessory sold for this purpose. We also like: the Dr Portable Infrared heater; DeLonghi oil-filled radiators; and Davis Air-Dryrs, which are sold in the boating industry for preventing mold in small spaces-they too create a silent, gentle, constant heat source. Keep in mind propane heaters actually put out moisture which must then be dealt with, and should be used with ventilation, like a cracked window, if I recall correctly. RE: Safety… Always buy UL and/or ETL listed; and we trust you have smoke detectors plus egress windows in place. Oh, yes, someone mentioned a mini-split-a bit pricey but that would be my ideal! Just getting to know your channel and enjoying it-it’s a great info and inspiration source all-around! Thanks!
Super helpful!! Some concrete workers let themselves into our garage guest room without permission and misused our Incinolet, leaving a big mess on that burn pan’s cover tray just below the clamshell. Now we’re facing a digusting cleaning job. Fortunately we happen to have Sprayway glass cleaner on hand! Thanks for THAT tip!! Didn’t know about removing the push button, nor about the details of the inner workings. Have you seen the humorous “instructional video” on the Incinolet? The film, “Director’s Cut,” was shot by an art film producer, Tom Sachs, who has no relationship with Incinolet, and is a real stitch. Who knows why he chose Incinolet as a subject, but I’m glad he did. For some reason the whole concept of the Incinolet toilet ignites an ardent flame in my funny bone. When we set ours up in the garage guest room (because it has a solid concrete floor and no plumbing), I decorated the little guest “bathroom” with burn relief supplies-udder balm, aloe Vera burn-relief spray, gauze bandages, adhesive tape, etc., artfully arranged in a cute little basket (“in case you forget to stand up before ignition”)- and we keep the room lit with a nightlight made of a simulated-flame chandelier bulb that I mounted to the top of a fire extinguisher. We call it our “Incinolight.” Every guest gets a thorough orientation on to how to use the Incinolet. The simple instructions, which of course come printed on the paper liner holder, are illuminated with a motion-sensitive LED light facing them from a Scrabble tray. Despite all this, people can STILL tend to get things wrong, especially if they miss my “Incinolet orientation” spiel. So far I’ve resisted the temptation to set up a motion-sensitive recording of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire.” Thanks for a very helpful video on cleaning the Incinolet! Much appreciate it!
Do you have a link for that toilet I saw another one but it was triple that price
brushing off the carbon defeats the purpose of doing yaki sugi. If you are going for asthetics only, its fine. Otherwise, dont brush it. That burnt carbon is what increases protection.
Trying to figure out how to detach light bulb in bathroom fixture of 5th wheel. Any suggestions?
Ok...diy version. Poop in a bucket with biodeg liner top w coir or sawdust. Once a week tie it up and take to the burn barrel in back yard. Add wood, burn? Or dump into a dedicated solar dehydrator box the way Simple Solar Homestading does...a concrete box with windows across top and a vent. Actually I believes he flushes to the box like a regular toilet. And in decades its still nowhere close to filling. Waste is mostly water and evaporates.
Danish oil is my choice. (Is this also known as teak oil?) I think id go with med-dark burn. Like coffee! 😂 ❤❤❤ So for the beautiful colorful woods, can we just wire brush them to raise the grain then oil them for natural color? Is there any other process besides burning that can prep them like burning? Thanks for making these videos.
I loved it. Lol. I love black walnut plain as well, but this method really accentuated the grain in the walnut and took the oil and burn very evenly. Pine never absorbs that way and stays a wee bit blotchy. This black could be quite elegant. Turquoise chips or red coral inlays in cracks could be interesting too.
So basically you built a huge witch 🎉 cauldron to cook humans in the woods.😅 But kidding aside it came out nice 👍I'll be building one myself with the copper coil and wood just to be safer. The pool noodle is a good idea for comfort too.
Gosh golly gee... you are a wonderful teacher. ❤❤❤ I love this project. I want to build one! Ill paint em! Lol
The worst thing to have ever graced the earth in terms of eco friendly inventions. And this is coming from someone from a 3rd world country. Yuck and yikes.
I’ve been searching online for a set of plans, I honestly would love to build my own vardo
Does it get hot? if not i will consider buying it.
DONT DRINK THE KOOL AID! You’re old enough to know better. I liked them all.
does the wood have to be wire bushed, I am using it forsupport boards for building a deck?
Your daughter is smart!
Were did he find one for 2000 dollars they want 2900 for a small one 120w
How do you keep your pipe from freezing in the winter?
Great video....very helpful...thank you!!
What happens if you got to pee?
Any input about powering an incinerator with solar?
With enough solar anything doable
Am I the only one pooping watching this, and have completely no interest in buying this at all lmao
Fireplace smoke smell is one thing ……this is another story! Poor neighbors. 🤢🤢🤢 👍
How do we insure these?
Interesting. My first video on the issue.
Omg $1700 for incinetator toilet or higher !
Been looking for this type of video. Thanks!!
Great! Happy that it was helpful for you. You have a tiny house?
Setting up one to use wood or cardboard as fuel. I wonder how long it will last til a leak is in effect. But hey cheap. and expensive spas dont last as well
I like that idea. Mine has lasted several years at this point. I suspect that at some point the bottom will give out in some way.
Awesome! How long does the propane tank last and how do you modulate the temp?
A tank is good for about 4 or 5 baths. Depends on ambient and water temps. I generally get in when the temp is good and throttle down the burners or turn them off entirely. Takes a while for 75 gallons to cool down. You building one of these?
Hour and a half to burn is crazy energy waste.
That comment comes up a lot. Not for everybody. Mining bitcoins is a waste of energy as well. Dunno. I still like it. :)
Appreciate you sharing your knowledge! Finishing up my tiny now.
Glad it was helpful. What kind of tiny did you build?
Question… I have some planters I built in the last few weeks but have not planted in yet. I simply used tung oil on them as a preservative but think it would be great to char the inside of the planters for added preservation. I charred a sample and the oil bubbles up and gets a beautiful even char. Will this still work for the preservation or am I too late? Anyone with experience / advice to preserve planter boxes? Thanks!
No, you're likely not too late. I would generally advise to do it the other way around though (burn and then oil). Planters look great when you use this technique, no?
I burn my poo/pee in a barrel like they did in vietnam
I've been sitting at my computer for hours, researching composting and dry-flush toilets on a rainy day. This was the best 'review' of the 4 basic choices and the best synopsis for each. I had heard of incinerating toilets a few years ago but feared: too much heat, do they actually work?, and is the hookup difficult to make them work well. Since I added an outlet close to where the toilet will sit, that's no longer a problem. I think the reason I hadn't considered it this far into my build is that I forgot about them, most likely because they're more rare in the waterless toilet discussions, and that could be due to the high cost. I'm building a not-so-tiny house (studio home since I'm an artist) and need something full-time rather than just a camping or an occasional toilet - and something my friends and family won't freak out if they have to use. These are actually "attractive", while so very few are, and will do exactly what I want = get rid of the less savory part of being human. Dumping tanks and jugs is out of the question since I don't have complete privacy where I live, while composting, although somewhat feasible, isn't the best option here either. Burning it to smithereens is by far the best choice and worth the price. Thanks for your video, I'm finally on the right path.
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad that my video was helpful. Seems like you have settled in on what you believe is the right path for you. It's always the context that matters with these kind of things.
Hippy hot tub. Awesome!🙌🏽
That's right. Thanks!
Nice I am in the process of making a tub out if one of these tanks. Love the wood idea, I would huse a different type, and the noodle is a great idea
Great! Glad the video was helpful. You going to document your build?
Once you've oiled your wood after burning it. Can you use varnish over the top of oil?
Likely not. It's more of an either/or scenario.
Good video, my feedback is even though the alligator skin look isn’t for you, you should have shown us how that would have turned out. I love that look, and I especially I wonder how it finishes and if it rubs off or is delicate…
True. I may go back and do a video specifically on that. Would that be helpful?
Seems like a lot of energy used to dispose of waste.
It is. It's still my preferred way of doing so either way though.
Love your daughter's bedroom. It's a cozy little nest.
Thanks! Yes, invariably the second bedroom in a 150 square foot house is going to be on the small side... :)
Cooking turds... gotta love it!
What about a bidet option? I am considering doing 2 toilets so I can have a dedicated bidet toilet.
If you have a tiny house with two toilets, then that's what you prioritize over something else I suppose. All comes down to what you want and need in the space you have available....and the budget at your disposal.
Great!
Thanks!
