The State Of Outdoor Specialty Retail
Matt Sharkey rejoins the podcast for this week's dive into outdoor industry news. We start with the state of the industry for outdoor retail. Matt and Aaron go deep on specialty retail and some of the emerging brands in the space - including a brand called Satisfy, who just made an interesting hire to expand their offering to include footwear. Building on that conversation, we explore which "Challenger Brand" is most likely to unseat Nike at the top (and if it could even be possible). Next, we dive into an acquisition in the metabolic health space, followed by our closing segment where we highlight our favorite things in brand, product and content.

    So for ArcTeryx in trail I would see it fit to position them as a LaSportiva competitor. To me the person who buys Salomon isn’t as likely to buy LaSportiva and vice versa.

    If you guys aren't familiar with @efprocycling content, in particular with Lachlan Morton. Lachlan was on their road team for a number of years, but has switched to more adventure/gravel racing/fkt attempts and they are producing storytelling content with him which they have been pairing with their race vlogs.

    I'm certainly no David Roche, but if I were I'd do it the same way! Owning your own brand from the start should be the go-to model for professional athletes IMO. It might look completely different for each athlete, but the overall ownership of your own career is such a great idea. And for those who don't jive with that personality-wise, factory teams!

  • @AdamBCopeland

    Argeed, Arcteryx is my favorite brand and their brand identity is amazing as well. As I develop Tantrums brand, I reference arc daily as a north star. No outdoor brands come close to their performance, technical superiority identity and product. If you look at all the storytelling about the trail products they used to use the word "approach shoe/approach vest / etc" to tie it to climbing, but all the current descriptions have dropped "approach". So they may be leaning in harder to trail as the trail category grows and allows room for numerous brands in the category for AMER sports. As a potential brand strategy for Arc, I think you split the category into two sections. Racing and FKTing. Then you have Remi, Courtney, Sophie, etc all racing under Salomon brand and ppl focused on FKTs like Erin Ton and Killian (current era) under Arcteryx. Obviously, it's a much smaller group of humans, but it's extremely core and niche which aligns with Arcteryx's brand identity history with ice climbing. Thoughts?

      Strava is a tracking app for running and riding - it shows your stats (how far, how fast, and where you rode). There's a bit of a social media component in there, too, where you can give kudos and comment on each other's activities.

  • @nikb972
    @nikb972 Месяц назад

    Interesting convo. My feeling with signature shoed the related athlete needs a certain product geekiness - so the consumer believes there has been a deeper development collaboration with a clear vision from the athlete. Courtney has a bit that easy going "dont care too much what I am running with" attitude that make this connection harder. (Whereass it works great for KJ, Tom, Francois etc) On the other side Courtneys vibe is easier connect to a signature colorway of a proven model.

    • @nikb972

    Fantastic video Aaron! As a content creator and podcast host I'm constantly navigating this space and it was really helpful to get this insight into the business. One question, you talked about how to start a partnership, but what are the reasons creators loose sponsorships? For instance, why would companies like Giant leave Jeff Lenosky, and Diamondback leave amazing creators like Seth? Thanks, Sage

  • @JosefGooch
    @JosefGooch Месяц назад

    Thanks for this video! The hardest part truly is finding the right person within these companies, someone who wants to build that kind of relationship and understand the vision. Someone like yourself is very difficult to find in such a large company overseeing so much. Mannn I feel like we would've killed it with Handball starting in NYC and touring across the country hosting the largest vents the sports ever seen! It's sad to say nowadays although social platforms make it easier to reach people, it's also the problem as to why nobody actually connects anymore. 😵‍💫 I just happen to get lucky stumbling across your video. Nowadays we'll go through life without knowing what anyone has to offer unless you 'Hawk Tuah' on video 😂. All jokes aside I appreciate the information! Jw have you ever wanted to get involved with a startup for the other side with acquiring sponsorships for an underdeveloped sport? Consider it a challenge with a strong community foundation to start with! I would love to chat sometime if you're curious as to what that might look like, it could be a lot of fun 🦾

    This whole video made legitimately no sense. The bloke keeps talking about products which the athlete can develop or promote, but his mainly talking about brands like RedBull (an energy drink), as that’s where his experience is. Plus he said that you past achievements is of little importance, lol are we sure he worked for RedBull, that’s literally what they do. Get guys and girls on board who are the best in there sports. Loved this conversation so much. As someone who's overseen the management of more than 300 elite athletes in his career, I can assure you that it is still not commonplace for a brand partner to receive a quarterly (or annual) update from an Athlete. Even when they have agents. This seemingly small gesture goes such an incredibly long way. So many pearls of wisdom in this conversation. Every athlete pursuing a professional career can benefit from all that Rebecca shares in this episode.
