BMW R Nine T Rear Brake Pad Replacement
This video describes the steps for replacing the rear brake pads on a BMW R Nine T. I'm working on a 2017 Scrambler.
Caution: don't operate the rear brake while you're performing this procedure. What happens is you'll push the caliper pistons out and it's somewhat difficult to push them back in, but not impossible. Just save yourself the trouble and don't touch the rear brakes.

Looks good, I am looking to add a bar to the R9T for a pillion rider. Maybe the R9T suspension will not handle the increased load.
Why do you need to take half the bike apart for an air filter? This is silly. Engineering failure
When is the first fluid change due and how often?
Hey thanks for your question... If you purchased a new r nine t, the first fluid change is at the 500 mile break-in service. Then every 12,000 miles thereafter.
Hell yeah dude. I’m glad you’re still out there riding and wrenching. Thanks for all the videos you’ve made. I enjoy the peace of them it’s exactly the kind of zen I appreciate when getting myself in the wrenching mindset, and it’s not often you see a calm video on the topic of motorcycles
Thank you very much for your kind words. I'm just trying to make the kind of video that I would want to watch if I were learning how to work on my bike. Thanks again for watching. Ride safe out there!
Finally, I appreciate you and your channel. You helped me a lot on servicing my own 9t. Cheers!
Hey @fishballx8, I'm glad that my videos are helpful. I wasn't even sure if people were watching these and putting them to use. It's great to hear some feedback. Thanks for watching the videos, and continue to enjoy wrenching on your 9T. Ride safe out there!
My BMW filter say, “Mahle” on it. Thanks a lot for your videos. I’ve been watching like crazy. I just bought a 2023 Scrambler that had no service history. It only has 1700 miles on it, but I’m changing all the fluids (just in case), so I can start fresh next summer. I’m definitely buying the GS-911 in the very near future. I wasn’t sure how it functioned until I watched this video!👍 By the way, I don’t know if you saw my comment on your rear diff fluid change. I actually was able to do it without removing the rear wheel. I think it’s designed that way. Anyway, the transmission fluid is next. From what I understand, it uses the same Hypoid G3 oil as the rear differential. I know you don’t use the BMW fluids, but to be safe, I’m going to use the BMW brand.
@revd4461 I just saw your other comment on the final drive oil change video. Thanks for your updates. And I'm glad that these videos have been helpful. I'll keep making more. Ride safe out there!
@@arugolaworkshop Yes, thank you! Transmission fluid is next. I’ve had two BMW R1200Cs and a Triumph Street Scrambler. This bike requires a bit more maintenance than the former and way more than the latter.
Hello. I saw one of your other video's and saw the Abba stand. I contacted them and they said they don't make one for the R9t. Do you happen to know which Abba stand (model) you're using? Thank you!! Helpful video.
Hey Dan, I have their standard ABBA Super bike stand with the adapter kit labeled as 'Kit 47'. I'm not sure why they don't make it available for the 9T anymore, it's such a useful stand. What I had to do was contact them directly and acknowledge that I'm using their 9T kit at my own risk. Thanks for checking out the video, ride safe out there!
@@arugolaworkshop Thank you for the reply and the info, I really appreciate it. That really is a great stand for working on either front or the rear of the bike. I learn a lot from you videos as I try and do much of my own maintenance.
I’m working on a video of the bike stand and will be reaching out to Abba. I’ve had quite a few people ask about this stand so I want to coordinate something with them in regards to making it available for the 9t. Thanks again for checking out the videos!
@@arugolaworkshop Thank you. I look forward to your video. 😁
Hi there. I’ve got an ABBA superbike stand the same as yours. Could you please tell me what numbers are stamped into the two abba stand adapters you are using so I could order the same adapters from abba as they don’t officially list any for a bmw r nine t? Kind regards from me here in the uk👍
Hey Johnnyboy, there were no numbers stamped on my adapters, but being that I tend to keep a lot of bike related junk around, I happen to have the invoice that came in the package of adapters. It's referenced as 'Kit 47'. Other viewers have also asked about the abba stand and adapters so my plan is to make a short video about it. Thank you for checking out this video.
@@arugolaworkshop thank you👍
Thanks for sharing, man! This looks quite straightforward, and my Scrambler maintenance schedule says to change the gear oil after the first year. And the dealer wants more than $500 for the one year service… I don’t have a garage either, have a great day😊
Hey man, you can definitely do this without a garage, just as I did. And DIY maintenance certainly saves a lot of money. Thanks for checking out the video, and good luck!
@@arugolaworkshop Yup, that was easy😃
This is a lot of damn trouble! And I thought the Ducati Desert X was hard. 🙀🙀
Lol, it's a little challenging to get to the air filter, but once you've done it, you'll feel like a boss. Good luck, and thanks for checking out the vid!
Thanks for this video. I just bought a used 2023 R9T Scrambler from a non BMW dealership with 1,700 miles. There’s no service history, so to be safe, I’m doing this and the engine oil this week. After watching your video, I looked at the fill hole plug on my bike and noticed that it can be accessed through one of holes in the hub (I have spoke wheels as well ). I don’t have a long torx bit set like yours yet, but I was able to access that nut with a #40 torx bit on an extension. It might take a little fiddling, but I think this job could be done without removing the wheel. Am I crazy? What are your thoughts? Thanks again.
Hey there, thanks for checking out the video. I see what you mean about accessing the filler plug through the hole in the wheel hub. If you think you can do it without removing the wheel, then by all means go for it. I haven't tried it, but I'm wondering about a couple of things. First, how easy or difficult it would be to get the plug back in. Second, I tend to be very neat when I'm doing maintenance work, meaning that if I were to spill any oil around the hole while filling it, I'd want to wipe it up and not let it sit on the final drive behind the wheel. That would bother me. And last, related to being neat, I'd want to wipe away any road grime around the filler plug so that I don't accidentally get any dirt or grime into the filler. But that's just me, and I might be extreme. Let us all know how it goes if you're successful. Thanks again!
@@arugolaworkshop I decided to wait for my paddock stand to arrive, just in case I do need to remove the rear wheel. It’s not here yet. I also just received my long torx set (I have a set that will work, but I like to have tools dedicated to specific vehicles) and the syringes. I’m a neat freak too, so I already have this job planned out. 😬 Anyway, I think the plug can be removed through the hub. Reinstalling it may be possible by reaching between the hub and swing arm, holding the plug between my fingers, while capturing it with the torx bit through a hole in the hub (same as the removal) then tightening it. Maybe I will make a video while I’m doing it. I’ll definitely let check in with the results. I’m undoing some unfortunate modifications done by the previous owner, so I’ve learned a lot about this bike over the last couple weeks. I’m getting it sorted thanks to videos like yours. 👍 I recently discovered Unit garage, and bought their fenders. It’s coming together. Thanks again.
@@arugolaworkshop Update: I changed the final drive oil without removing the wheel. The filler plug just seated itself on the torx bit. I was able to remove it through the hub and reinstall it through the hub without even using two hands. I put newspaper between the brake rotor and the fill hole, so nothing got on the bike. Along with your video, the job was very easy. The most difficult part of the job was cleaning up the oil after I knocked the bottle over. I probably wasted about one service worth of gear oil. 🤦🏻♂️
@@revd4461 Hey, that's great man! Thanks for the updates.
@@arugolaworkshop My pleasure. 👍
According to BMW RSD (092017): "Wheel-speed sensor, front, to telescopic forks" (M6 x 20) torque should be 8Nm
Thank you! I'll add that to the description.
What is the name of this phone application? In my motorcycle, I pour oil into the new filter and then close it.
The app is an accompaniment to the GS-911 device. You need the GS-911 to connect to the bike's computer, then you use your app on the phone to view any error codes. It's similar to a car's OBD reader. Thanks for checking out the video.
Thx, good video. Love that Abba center stand, seems like it's discontinued now..
Thanks for checking out the video. My next video will be about the Abba bike stand and how to get your hands on one.
Yours by far is the most easiest to follow - you should drop one for battery replacement too!
Thanks for checking out the video. I’ll make a battery replacement how to the next time I have to perform that service.
I love it. I need one for the wife.
Thank you for checking out the video!
Can you share what is the size of that O-Ring?
I'm not sure of the size (it might be 11.2 x 1.8) but I listed the part # in the description. And will try to link it here: www.aspowersports.com/request-parts-motorcycles-dealership--xparts_request?path=%2Fsearch%3Fsearch_str%3D33117695219
Awesome. Thanks!
You bet! Thanks for checking out the video.
Thanks for the info! Here's a handy tip, wrap any of the pipes that may get oil on them with aluminum foil. Nothing will soak through and no burning oil on your next ride. Really handy for changing the oil filter as well!
Great tip! Thanks for checking out the video
Interesting. No tensioner to relief the pressure so you can replace it? I wonder how does the pulley maintain the tension correctly because belts do stretch a bit initially.
That's right, there is no tension adjustment on the belt. It's a fairly snug fit and the belt is not that flexible.
I would rather just buy the shoes with the skates. Not sure why people are doing this, but then again as a kid we used to have simple skates you strap to any shoe and you could change their size to fit you. I have no idea why they only sell those for kids in bad quality now, the money hungry industry now has decided it is no longer possible to make those for adults that have more money to spend. Whatever gets you rolling works.
@justjordan8018 thanks for checking out the video. Most people will probably buy their skates complete and ready to go, off the rack. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. And then there are some weirdos like me who like to customize everything and indulge in DIY projects, even if something could be bought for much cheaper. And just for further context, I made this video during the pandemic when there was a huge spike in interest in roller skates and retailers were often sold out of ready-to-roll pairs of skates. This was a way for me to get a pair of skates, and hopefully help others that were trying to skates as well. In any case, I wish you the best on your roller skating journey!
So it is H4 , couldn't find the specs of the bulb anywhere - even the Haynes service manual (printed on toilet paper these days apparently) only mentioned the "quartz bulb" w/o mentioning the type - well done Haynes. Thx for stressing the fact not to be scammed by LED replacement filaments - it is indeed not working at all and doesn't look good on a simple bike like the scrambler...thx a mill.
@rikherlaar Thanks for checking out the video, glad I could help!
About to do running in service and thanks to your video doing this oil change will be a lot easier! Thanks
@tnth9099 Thanks for checking out the video, glad I could help.
People complain about doing this job but you made it look easy! Can the battery also be removed if necessary?
@tnth9099 I haven't made a battery replacement video yet, but the procedure of lifting up the tank in this video also allows you access to the battery from above. So yes, you can remove the battery from the steps in this video with some additional steps in clearing the way from above. Thanks for checking out the video!
Awesome video!!
Thanks for watching!
thank you for this just gt my r9t scrambler🔥
Incredible, congratulations!
Thank you very much 🙏
Thanks for checking out the video!
My 9T is a 2015. Why are you changing the belt so soon? Was something not working correctly?
@doctorlee BMW recommends changing the belt every 24,000 miles or 6 years. My bike is a 2017 and 6 years has passed. I'm sure the belt could have lasted for longer but it's a cheap and easy maintenance item so I figured I might as well do it. Thanks for checking out the video.
@@arugolaworkshop Nice job! I will be watching this when I go to do mine in the spring.
Do you have, or can you make a video showing the abba Superbike stand adapters for your bike?
@stevemullens7937 I can certainly do that. Thank you for the video idea and for checking out the video.
Is your abba superbike stand a standard stand, or one of the shorter pivot height versions made specifically for the R nineT? It looks like it might be standard because the rear wheel seems to be quite far off the ground. Oh, I am now subscribed!@@arugolaworkshop
Hey Steve, thanks for your patience in waiting for a response, I accidentally overlooked this one. You’re right, that I have the standard stand, and there used to be a shorter stand for the R9T which has since been discontinued. I’m using their Kit-47 adapter kit to allow my stand to work with the 9T. I’m also editing a video on how I use my stand and will be reaching out to Abba to see about coordinating the availability of the 9t adapter kit to make this stand available for other 9t owners. Thanks for checking out my videos!
@@arugolaworkshop I have an abba superbike stand for my Triumph Tiger Sport 660 and have since installed a center stand on both bikes! Now, I have a paddock stand and an abba stand that are just hanging on the wall. Too bad the center stand wasn't available for my Triumph until after I bought the abba! The center stand on my R nineT was the first or second accessory I installed. Very useful!
That's great. I used to have a 1978 R100/7 with a center stand and just really enjoyed how useful it was for maintenance. Center stands are the best! I was surprised that the 9T just didn't come with one, as they were purported to be the modern interpretations of the old airheads. And all the old airheads had centerstands.
Im looking on the Abba website and they dont list the rnineT as option for fitment with their stands. I see you have some sort of modification at the attachment point....
@olivedjazzer Someone else commented that they want to see a video of how I have my Abba bike stand set up. So I'll make that video in the next few days that explains it. Thank you.
@@arugolaworkshop thanks so much. I ended up getting a pit bull and using a jack with some blocking for the oil pan. I'm much rather have a center mount option
Enjoyed your very detailed video from Perth Australia! Keep up the good work! Im swapping out my cast wheels to an aftermatket spoked Alpina wheels. What are the torques setting for the front brake discs mounting bolts and the abs ring?
@jamalhassan1284 Front brake disc torque settings are 19Nm. Remember to use blue loctite or new BMW bolts for mounting. The bolts have encapsulated loctite. I don't have the speed sensor ring torque specs but I would imagine it's around 8 Nm. Thanks for checking out the video.
Great vid, thanks.
@ricorodriguez3579 Thanks for checking out the video.
damn, who hide air filter like that...
Yeah, it’s not the easiest place to get to in the bike. The battery is a pain to replace as well.
hey i did the same thing but still don't work.
Sorry to hear that. Not sure how to help. Could be a faulty lamp or it’s not fully connected. Hope you figured it out.
Very well done... I am glad I viewed this... I thought the fill plug was on top outside of the diff housing.... excellent references in the details above.. well done thank you
Thank you so much for the kind comment and for watching the video. Good luck with your service and ride safe out there!
Why not just cut the old belt? Should be easier
Lol, you’re not wrong. I was just following the manual. It is a pretty sturdy belt though, and I suppose if one were to cut it they would need a fairly substantial cutting tool. Which might accidentally ding the engine case if they were not careful. Plain old scissors wouldn’t work. But go ahead and cut it and let everyone know how it goes. Thanks!
Yea this is awesome!
Thanks for checking out the video!
nice video man! about to do this for my bike too (the 12k mile interval snuck up quick). quick question: what’s the stand you’re using? i like how it can lift the rear wheel too the way it’s balanced, thanks!
Hey @JSweec thanks for checking the video. The stand is called the Abba super bike stand. It’s from a company in UK. They might tell you that they don’t suggest it for the nine T because some people may have had some trouble getting their bike up on the stand. However they do make the parts and adapters for it, you’ll have to press them for it.
awesome thanks man, looking fwd to more videos!!@@arugolaworkshop

Is the oil the correct oil? I do not see that it is the Hypoid Oil.
Thank you for your comment. This is the correct oil, though not OEM. Hypoid refers to the type of gearing in the gearbox while the GL-5 designation of the oil in my video is referring to the performance specification. The BMW OEM gearbox oil from BMW is specifically called "BMW Synthetik OSP" and does not feature the Hypoid labeling. It also costs $38 USD per Liter, which is why I went with the Liqui Moly. Liqui Moly is made in Germany and have been tested by Wunderlich, so you can rest assured that this oil is compatible. Thanks again.
Looks like pain

is a very good idea! But are sneakers too soft and not supportive enough to sprain the ankles? (Ice figure skaters pass by)
Thanks for your comment. I felt like these were supportive enough. Back in the 1970's and 1980's, people were building roller skates from much less supportive low top running shoes.
