THE DEVIL'S CHORD - TWT Episode 2 (Doctor Who S14E2)
Worst episode of "Dr. Who" in it's 61 year history more crying Gatwa and a really lame storyline and the birth of jesus at the end was a step too far. You can tell Moffat is running out of ideas. This is not "Dr. Who".
I totally feel where you are coming from. We are definitely giving a lot of grace with the new season esp cuz Disney isn't allowing a lot of freedom. The concept we feel like was great but it seemed to be rushed at the end like a lot of the new seasons episodes! We refuse to give up on our fav show 😭😭
Oh! and also, I have a suggestion or two. 1 When you do a review of an ep, I think it would be fun if you started off with your usual charming banter, but just when you start to talk about the ep, you actually run the episode -unseen and unheard (although you could each have an AirPod?), so you can both see it (only you) on a screen behind the camera. I don't think that you’d get in trouble for it, but you could follow your usual path of insightful review, only interspersed with little breaks where you declare, ‘Oh this is a nice scene!” then describe what you can see -and why it works so well. That way, there would be space for you to still examine aspects of Who and the featured episode in particular but allow the viewer to vicariously enjoy your warmth and thrill when the drama/comedy turns up along the way. One of you could put specs on, so we can just about see an occasional reflection.... youtube gold 2 Do a timey-wimey series where you review River Song’s episodes but on her timeline. I know its been done elsewhere, but not with your ironic and quick-witted minds at work! 3 Review any or all of the following, using format 1, above “Rose" “Dalek” "The End of the World" "Father's Day” "The Girl in the Fireplace" "The Impossible Planet” "The Satan Pit” "Human Nature” "The Family of Blood” "The Fires of Pompeii” "The Doctor's Daughter” "Turn Left” "The Eleventh Hour” "Amy's Choice” "The Doctor's Wife” "A Good Man Goes to War” "Asylum of the Daleks” "The Bells of Saint John” "The Crimson Horror" - and so many more - just waiting for your critique. I know these are already well-regarded eps, but I want to hear your thoughts anyway. Sometimes - well frequently, in fact, Who provides us with a parable on the unforeseen side effects of humanity’s liking for nihilistic stuff (often tech stuff) -"The Bells of Saint John” is a good example of that. Its interesting. I’m picturing you both sat down with an assortment of American snacking-style energy boosters, or a portion of grits, two spoons.... and a notepad, maybe. 4 Put yourselves in the rabid mindset of the Whovian fanbase. We’re mad for a bit of Who-based distraction when a big event comes along -an anniversary, a special episode, or a new series is looming. Similar to the suggestion of a Christmas Eve posting, you might suggest a game of pairing episodes of Who - from along the new era timeline. Episodes that work together thematically or contrast totally - that’s a new idea in my head. It may take a bit of work. eg "The Girl in the Fireplace” cw "The Girl Who Died” - about the result of being abandoned by The Doctor you could do a Timey-Wimey talk on either a pairing like these, or suggest a pairing of an episode that may* make a nice companion piece for the new as yet unseen episode (although we will have a title to work with...).
1. Great idea! We definitely want to do another reaction-style video and have talked abt possibly getting a green screen, screen recording while we watch and editing us over it. Not sure yet if it would get us in trouble - will definitely be looking into it though. Possibly clipping it a bit to avoid copyright striking? Maybe we'll try out the specs idea too.. made us laugh LOL 2. You give the best compliments, thank you!! We definitely have been wanting to do this exact video, just never had the time to before - maybe now with our more relaxed release schedules! 3. Thank you for the episode suggestions - just added them to our list. LOVE Bells of Saint John for that exact reason - have you seen Black Mirror? God, we both love grits too, how did you know HAHA gotta get our Southern cooking on! Snack time is always an option fr. 4. We do really like this idea too! Years of advanced English will come in handy to recognize similar themes and we'd love to compare epis - esp bc there are similar themes over the course of all these years. Picking a theme and matching episodes to it would be a really interesting review style! We'll keep our eyes peeled for more information on the new episode and try to connect with one previous - love this suggestion. As always, thank you for your compliments, commentary, suggestions, and overall encouragement for us to keep going :)
Can we talk about how the wisemen are already in Bethlehem? They are supposed to follow the star across the desert to find Christ right? But that star JUST showed up, so how the hell are their camels already there? Also I agree, Joy was annoying as hell, and that wide eyed, plastic smile wasn't creepy, it was just cringe
That is actually such a good point, we didn't even think abt that... Maybe the Doctor invented Jesus and told them ahead of time idk?? Yeaa Joy's whole thing didn't exactly feel real and we cringed a bit lol
Happy to welcome you back. Also, I am delighted to see you talk straight about the various bits and pieces that irritate - like annoying grit in the candy floss of timey-wimey stuff we love. Moffatt is a genius writer in the main, but he - like RTD is clearly being limited by the constraints that seem to be put upon the show. Just recently, there was a release of scenes that were cut from Season 1 -and when viewed, they make so much sense. Check them out. Suddenly, “Push the Button” in Space Babies and the magic whistle in Kingdom of Death add so much to the narrative. In truth, RTD surely has the wit to discern when important narrative points are compromised - so what's going on? We are all missing the lovely interpersonal exposition we relished when The Doctor and Companion shared their Tardis time together -maybe in a cold open, or when The Doctor had real pushback from their buddy when there was a humane alternative to certain death. No time for humanity Russell? It feels safe to assume that Disney has insisted on a shorter episode length to suit their own priorities -WTF! Why in a streaming format, do we have to be limited in episode length? I’ve spent a long time defending RTD on here, pushing back on the criticism of the decisions he has made, but your valid points have confirmed my rising doubts. I guess that maybe it's issues like these that are holding up the renewal of the Disney/BBC partnership. It's my guess that RTD is privately not too pleased with the compromises he has been forced to make so far but is too committed to the cause to go public. My hope is the RTD will allow the stories to breathe by producing more two-parters. The two-parter is not my favourite format - the dramatic cliffhanger is a trope I don't much like, but surely it's better than a rushed ending -which is frankly insulting. Like I said, welcome back, and I hope you find time to post more of your wonderful wisdom. It's great to be alive, don't you think?
Thanks for the welcome!! Glad you enjoy our realness, someone had to say it... No time for humanity INDEED. This is such a good piece of info to find out - we'll definitely check them out, thank you! Maybe he does realize some moments are necessary but sort of feels the same way the fanbase does in that we wish there was more runtime and isn't as passionate or something. Maybe he just needs to put episodes out per Disney contract - who knows. But we don't understand either why there are these constraints - maybe money/budget? We would make that same guess you have abt RTD not being fully satisfied 😂 Agreed on that we would accept a two-parter to resolve this HUGE issue lol. Great to see you in the comment section again, it's amazing to be alive :)
I think my issue with the matter is that it didn't really matter if the doctor was there or not. Like, wouldn't the starseed and its host just shoot into space regardless of if he was there or not? The main other instance I can think of where the doctor talks someone down to snap them out of a state is when 11 (who people also saw as a bit too bubbly) did it to the head of the church in his last episode. 100% down for more dark-doctor stuff, though I suppose this last season has been beating down 15 after the healing that 14 went through, so good chance we'll get more going forth.
We were confused abt that too, but we just assumed that Joy just...absorbed... the star to prevent it from destroying the Earth? And rose into the sky? And the Doctor helped her absorb it into happy thoughts? Who knows 🤷♀ And we definitely need to brush up on our 14 knowledge... kinda forgot a lot that happened. Glad you think there's a good chance for that though, we need the Doctor to go rogue (and find Rogue)!!
I think the end becomes much better with the theory that the star actually did what Villenguard wanted it to do: it created christianity in the past so that they could sell them weapons in the future (as seen in Boom). Also, the part where the star's AI is like "we apologize for the death we will cause" could be about the religious wars they will cause by creating christianity instead of being about blowing up the planet, which makes the episode much more subversive and dark in my opinion.
@@agentjohn4313 ok that Theory has me on board with the ending 100%. I love the connection to Boom and that it's using faith as a weapon as we know villenguard does. I wish they verbally made that connection in the episode because that would have been awesome. We would have lost our minds.
@TimeyWimeyTalks yeah it was my first interpretation when I watched it and I hope it was Moffat's intention but if it was, it was clearly not communicated well enough
He gets the code from himself as part of a bootstrap paradox like the 12th Doctor explained at the beginning of Before The Flood (all that stuff with Beethoven and the music apparently appearing out of nowhere). He knew the code because he remembered his future self telling him it!
👁️👄👁️ bootstrap paradox is in blink as well and I still don't completely understand it. But I'm trying 😅
I was a little disappointed that Nicola Coughlan spent so much time possessed as I had been looking forward to her being on the show. Not sure about her character becoming a star… I don’t know what kind of life being a star is, but it’s bound to be missing a lot of the little things that make being human, well, human.
Shine bright like a Diamond ✨⭐️lol I wanna know your feelings about absorbing your mother ha ha
@@TimeyWimeyTalksI don't know, best case they're just living happily together inside a star. Whatever that's like. 😂
Instead of the Daleks' motto... _"Pro-cre-ate! Pro-cre-ate!"_
@@texasbeast239 ha ha I love it
It's really great to see you back! Don't worry about keeping a regular schedule, just do videos whenever you can. :)
Aww we appreciate you! Thanks for for being here and staying tuned! Watching the Christmas special rn :D
Im so glad y'all are back 🥹 congratulations on the new job! Unpopular Opinion; River is more than overrated. She's poorly written and all of her appearances after season 5 are pure fan service lacking substance.
Thanks for the congrats! Alyssa is loving it. God you know what's up ha ha! I might agree with that 🙈
So, Thanks for the kind note above. I do hope that you do get re-energised on the Timey Timey trail. Your joyful presentations need to continue. You make me laugh, and think - and so I’m ok with the idea that characters from history should be represented in their original race. However, there then follows that Who should be obligated to portray more characters from the broad spectrum of Earth’s history. - of all nations. I can’t wait until we see the Christmas special when we get to meet the Hebrew baby Jesus, and the various ethnic folk in the stable. Regenerations - where genders are fluid. I think I have to like the changes we’ve seen. Missy is irreplaceable, after all. It’s funny, don’t you think that we’re ready to accept an alien who explodes when their life is over, and magically reincarnate (just wow!) but somehow accepting a change of gender is beyond our realm of imagination?!!! Nah. Hmm, ending Who? Nah, we maybe need to hold the faith. RTD is going to knit the whole thing together. believe it. River Song is maybe the GOAT, but part of a little herd of beloved Doctor characters. Re the Doctor River relationship -“You can’t expect a sunset to love you back” you know. I’m a Clara fan too, but I have to overlook the Moffat death-cheating thing that he can’t resist. Some folk just can’t take the fact that she was too assertive. The easy chat between you is your secret sauce. the constant stream of thought borders on genius. WTF! Gun in a haunted house? America is strange indeed. Gun in your lap? Roll down the window, toss! Then - bye bud. What - Alyssa -were you born on Christmas Day or thereabouts? maddening, surely - You need to have an unbirthday - you know, a second “official birthday” like the British Queen did - where you choose a date six months from your actual date. This protects you from Birthday/Christmas Present crossover disappointments, and you also get a second party! So third week of June - party time! Top tip!
My unpopular take: I think bigeneration was a terrible idea as it was executed, it would have been much better if the 14th Doctor "remerged" with the 15th at the end. I kinda hate having two separate doctors around at all times.
I kind of let it go - so to speak. I found it hard to accept that 14 is hanging about while Sutek was wreaking havoc, so I’ve invented my own concept that David Tennant’s Doctor is living in a fold of time - like he’s tucked in a pleat in the fabric of time - there, but out of sight. That way, the whole bigeneration still works, but the complications are minimised. Hmmm
For real! If only they could create a personal for me. But seriously you are totally right !!
... STINKY! 🤭
🤣
Em... is this a pilot for a new sit-com? 😳😂😂😂 You made me laugh out loud
Omg, we would have the best time with our own sitcom you don’t even know!! Glad you enjoyed it LOL
Great ideas! Please continue!
Hi Tyara and Alyssa, Really enjoying your TWTs I have a seasonal suggestion. How about joining in with the UK 25th December mad Who TV frenzy - and deploy your sharp insights and quick witted banter at the same time? It would be great to hear what Christmas episode you would like to recommend we view as a seasonal appetiser for this year’s Christmas Episode. Perhaps your Timey Wimey Tallk could drop on Christmas Eve? You could offer your own thoughts as to why you think your suggested ep would be a neat opener for Ncuti’s visit to the Time Hotel, but mainly, it would just be a nice excuse for you to sprinkle some frosty Christmas Joy To our World?
Agh, we wish we had time to implement this beforehand! Great idea, unfortunately we were too busy up until recently 🫠 one of our personal favorite specials though while we’re here is Voyage of the Damned - love watching 10 just go off on his Wikipedia speech 😂 nostalgic!! We’re currently watching the 2024 special now, can’t wait to talk about it!
Hope you guys are doing alright x
Hey Georgia🫶🫶🫶 we are surviving our busy schedules! Hope you have the best new years!
- The Doctor met up with River’s spirit on Trenzalore - allowing some kind of affirmation of his ongoing caring love for her.
This is a great review. Sincerity is a great aspect of your conversations. Cool. You deserve to have many more views. Doctor Moon revealed the reality of The Library to Cal, so that she could assist as best as she could in protecting the human visitors, and through that action - the safety of the C.A.L. project itself.
Going back to watch y'all's episodes from before I found the channel. Gotta do something since y'all apparently aren't posting videos anymore 😔
Hey friend :D we will be back soon promise!!!
Face The Raven - Heaven Sent - Hell Bent, is one of the greatest 3 episode runs in new who for me. Capaldi and Clara also has the most interesting relationship out of the companions too. It was always going to lead to the Doctor losing his shit after losing so many people in horrible ways. I absolutely love their story across season 8 and 9 & the quality of the writing is comparable to how well Rivers story was told, for me
Also Flatline was filmed in the old railway station behind my work. I remember the road leading to it being shut for filming when I was driving past. Never connected it was for who until I saw it on the show the following year
No way!! That is sooo cool.
On the topic of the music score, I find since 13, even though Murray Goldis back for 15, it's overall worse than before 13 because even Murray himself has said he's been told basically to score continuously for every episode with very little time without music. It's massively diluted the quality imo, before when music was playing each piece usually had so much personality and was a banger in its own, but now it's mostly just background music :(
tbh I didnt like Whitaker's era but I thought this episode was okay, (especially compared to the rest of her run), I think that it's portraying the daleks in a way that feel really new without contradicting previously established lore.
I've not actually watched this episode or really most of Jodie's stuff though I do intend to get around to it. The general consensus that I've seen is that the writing isn't great during that bloc. With the prison scene, while it is kinda cool to have inmates who we previously know (eg. weeping angel), it does also come with the flaw of whether they're just there as a reference to keep people's attention rather than having a better story (which is also a trait of modern super-hero media too to just throw references in to compensate for writing). The whole thing of "who am I now that I'm not travelling with the Doctor" is a fun route to explore, though UNIT has kind of diminished a fair amount of it by hiring people and a good chunk of the others get killed or travel by some other means. I really need to watch through her episodes so I can better comment upon them.
I hate that there is a weeping angel in the prison, it makes no sense! Which is it gonna be; Are you going to have no surveillance on it, or are you gonna put a camera on it? Cuz if you do "the image of the angel becomes an angel" Between this and the Pting, there needs to be a reason this prison is so badass, but they give us nothing.
By the way, my sister really loves this era. She writes lesbian fan fiction about 13 and Yaz. :D
Out of the 13th Doctor New Year specials, I enjoyed this one the least. I found it boring... I didn't like that American guy and wasn't pleased to see him back. I enjoyed the other two 13th Doctor New Year specials though! The first (Resolution) was actually pretty exciting, and the third (Eve of the Daleks) was funny. Aisling Bea is in Eve Of The Daleks, and she's always amusing.
I like this episode
You mention that this episode is a Christmas episode, and this out of everything is my main gripe with Chibnall... this is a new years day episode. Moffat wrote his last episode for Capaldi to regenerate but Chibnall refused to do a Christmas episode as his first, so Moffat scrambled together a Christmas special to be Capaldi's last episode instead... and then Chibnall refused to Christmas episodes all together... I know I am using a lot of ellipsis but this is how annoyed it makes me lol, CHIBNALL HATES CHRISTMAS! HE WRITES HORRIBLE DOCTOR WHO AND WONT ATLEAST WRITE CHRISTMAS SPECIALS???? In the UK growing up, Doctor Who was a key part of Christmas, you open your presents, you eat your food and drink lots of fizzy drinks and sit down and the whole family watches the Doctor Who Christmas special. I feel so sad for the kids growing up with Chibnall's Doctor Who and they don't get that truly amazing feeling when a wonderous whimsical adventure pops up on their TV on Christmas day from their favourite sci-fi show. It feels like Chibnall just took himself too seriously.
Between this and the off year there were no Christmas episodes for 4 years!
Oh no! im so sad this is the Jodi episode y'all started with 😭 i hate Mr. Robertson, with his halfass cartoon Donald Trump performance. He's in Archnids in the UK too, and its even worse there. Please please please please do Demons of the Punjab if you decide to do another one! I am NOT a fan of the Chibnal era of wiriting, which as you've rightly pointed out, is formulaic and riddled with plot holes (like how the Pting is a prisoner even tho Chibnal wrote the epsiode it debuted in and specifically stated they can't be held prisoner). What I AM a fan of is Jodi. She is the Doctor, and the fact she manages to shine through the trash writing is one reason I respect her performance so much. That said, DotP is a well written episode, because Chibnal didn't write it.
Seconded for Demons of the Punjab! Definitely one of the best of the 13th Doctor era.
@@Will-nn6ux this and The Haunting of Villa Diodati are my favorites
Dr. Who episode where Tyara has to say Christopher Eccleston correctly or the universe ends (impossible challenge)
One of my favorite mysteries is what was the "Satan" being in the episodes "The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit" who claimed to have existed before time, and who were the people who originally trapped him in that prison. Never got answers there
That would be an episode we would actually die to see! Now that demon actually gave us the chills.
My theory about Jack's erased memories is that it's somehow related to him getting to know that he becomes the Face of Bo later on through time travel, and that the time agency did it to preserve the timeline.
Love this theory!! This could totally work. We keep getting stuck on the amount of time though - like why was it an entire 2 years? Maybe he was visiting the Face of Boe for that amount of time and asking him questions or something, and the Agency finally found out.
I think the unfinished business point is a good one for the regeneration back to a previous incarnation. I think Rose and the metacrisis Doctor could have kids as he is fully human rather than part timelord which might complicate things. Would love to see more of a transition from Captain Jack to the Face of Boe, as currently other than that comment there's not that much in there. I'd be down for character analysis episodes. So the doctor smashed all the mirrors in the Tardis, no wonder bad things keep happening with all that bad luck throughout time. Congrats on the promotion! Been without the means to watch videos for a couple weeks now so got some catching up to do.
@@GeorgiaLambkin doing a story about Jack/Boe in a transitory state would be a great way to bring back the character and deepin his lore, without the need to bring back Barrowman (and all the controversy surrounding him). Id also be down to see the forgotten years with the time agency. After all, if he doesn't remember it, there's nothing saying he didn't meet the Doctor back then!
Heyyy :)) we were so happy to hear from you!! We do need more of plot from Jack before he gets too old😭. We hate to see him age as an actor. And thank you :D💼
I think Mickey is pretty clearly a bad boyfriend if you re-watch Rose. he finds out Rose just very nearly got KO’d by an explosion at her work but his first instinct is get her to the pub so he can watch a football match, when Rose goes to his house she tells him she wants a cup of tea so he should WASH his mug for her, not just rinse, he also tells her not to check his emails so it implies he was talking to other girls, he also is kind of cowardly (understandable i guess) whilst Rose saves the world, then calls The Doctor “a thing”, after he just saved his ass. I think Rose treats him badly obviously, but Mickey isn’t a good boyfriend by any means to Rose.
Dang, can't believe we didn't remember any of this! Definitely need to give it a rewatch. At least Mickey made up for it a little bit later on, but thank goodness that toxic relationship ended, lol. We're glad Rose got to go on her adventures :)
i think the stenson w bullet holes is symbolism of The Doctors war torn nature, the stenson represents the american ideals of second chances, and the bullet holes show how many second chances The Doctor has had, it’s a reminder to him to get Jex a second chance, whilst he may not deserve one
This makes so much sense, thank you!! Second chances is a huge theme in this episode, and we can definitely see exactly what you mean.
Well, there was a thing in one of the 90s ‘adult’ Doctor Who novels called Lungbarrow where we were told that Time Lords reproduce using machines called ‘Looms’. Those books have been contradicted quite a lot though. I’m pretty sure that the Doctor has had sex at some point during the modern era! :D By the way, there is an unfinished TV story in which a Time Lady refers to her childhood as 'when she was a Time Tot'. :D
Finally, Tyara's burning question is answered!! Haha, thank you for your knowledge, sad that they've been contradicted though. Think you're right about that second part too 😂 'Time Tot' is such a cute term! How come we have never learned about these things in the modern times...
@@TimeyWimeyTalks Those books were still pretty influential! Russell T Davies wrote one of them called Damaged Goods in 1996. The 7th Doctor and his companions moved into a flat on a working-class housing estate, searching for an ancient Gallifreyan weapon. There was even a family there named Tyler (not Rose's family though). Also, Human Nature/The Family Of Blood was adapted from a 7th Doctor novel by Paul Cornell called Human Nature. Fans spent a fair bit of time trying to work out how the same events happened to both the 7th and the 10th Doctors. I suppose 'time is in flux' works as an explanation.🤣
Rose
24:20 you are correct! He sees his reflection and comments on the size of his ears in the very first episode. I used to think this was a plot hole, like it implied he just regenerated but then how were there all those photos/pictures of him in Clive's house? But if what you're saying about mirrors is true, it makes sense that hes been traveling solo since the war ended and hasn't looked at his face. Also! 23:15 love this fact, but it goes deeper! Not only does the Doctor take the first and last action of the time war, both are acts of mercy 🙏🏽 I won't spoil Genesis of the Daleks, but 4 and the War Doctor both have a chance to end war through genocide, and both find another way.
That is probably true. What makes me smile are the details scattered in that episode. Remember that when Rose tries to track down The Doctor, and meets up with the geeky guy who invites her to look at photos of The Doctor - clearly indicating that by that time, 10 had been in Dallas, Southampton, getting involved with those dramas - how did he manage that, if he was just freshly regenerated? - Of course, its a timey-wimey show, and those photos are from The Doctor’s future, when he travels to the past!. Love it.
Couldn't remember why this stuck out - thank you for clarifying!! It's a good way to see that the Doctor was actually ready to let someone in again and had done some healing. Good for him :) Wow, it's really interesting to see that he was responsible almost entirely for how the War went. It adds so much depth to his character, like of course he struggles with a deep power complex sometimes! In the Doctor Who Universe, I wonder how many people can say they've been responsible for an entire galactic race war 😬 Thanks for the info!
@@arnothill This reminds me of watching that episode when I was a kid, not understanding that photo editing was a thing, and being amazed at those photos. To me, there was either a person who looked really similar to Eccleston at the Kennedy assassination, or time travel actually existed! Ah, the magic :)
For what happened to the Vashta Nerada: the books of the library were made from their forest. The library IS their forest, their home. The Doctor just let them have this world. As for the “look me up” line I always interpreted it as the Doctor giving them a warning, pulling off his mask and revealing that HE is actually the most dangerous being on this world, but he is giving them the chance to back off and live to fight and feed another day
The part where you mentioned him pulling off a mask is really interesting in terms of the Doctor's character as a savior and hiding the past that he is running from. This show gives us so many opportunities to think and not just watch!
@@TimeyWimeyTalks for the most part the Doctor hides behind a veil of anonymity and innocence. But there are times where he pulls back the veil and reveals himself in what I am calling “I am the Doctor” moments
great review
Thanks for watching :)🥹👉👈
this video is hilarious lol, Jack is such an icon <3 and these are two of my all-time favourite episodes. I always loved the banter between Jack and Rose and the Doctor before I even realised how gay it was, and just the whole, um, atmosphere of the episode. I love the contrast between the scary vibes and the sorta protective/domestic vibes and the humour. I think iirc the phones ringing thing was because Jamie was looking for his mum before he died and got hit by the ambulance ship, and because it was part of the Chula warriors' abilities with where the nanogenes came from, basically the nanogenes were applying that to him so that he could use them to aid his, like, mission to find his mummy. as for why he said "mummy" not "sister", idk maybe he had already been questioning that before he died? like if Nancy was still being a parental figure to him then it might have been really confusing for him? I love Christopher Eccleston's Doctor, also his IMDb quotes are really interesting. uhh as a British person I'm totally used to American voices online and I don't even think about it but it does feel weird to have the two accents next to eachother to compare. it's also really hard to make American slang sound good when you're British lol. also I have trouble distinguishing between different American accents, they all kind of blend together, whereas British accents are really obviously different for me
Oooh you are right! He was looking for his mum/ sis before he died 😢That's a good theory. We just read over the IMDb quotes and we love him even more. It's good to know that he did love the role it's unfortunate the environment he had to work in pushed him out. justice for our man 😔
In the UK, at least me and those who I know, find that an American accent in our shows is really weird, but in American shows its English accents that sound weird. So I reckon its just whatever accent is singled out, even if its your own accent, it'll sound weird? Also I think similarly to how a bit of the toymaker's power remained in the giggle when 15 used it to hammer out a new tardis, some of Maestro's power was left over and made everyone sing and dance. If thats the case then hopefully it means no more musicals unless Maestro is involved again - which I'd probably be alright with cus its part of their power set and has an in universe explaination! It'd also be really cool for future episodes to incorporate it, with eps where a god is defeated leading to a special moment at the end specifically related to the god of that episode's power. PS love Alyssa pronouncing his name as Christoful - he's the wonderful Christoful Eccleston!
Not Chistoful ha ha! Apparently I've been saying his name like that this whole time😭😂 Now every time we see the doctor break out in song we can all be very suspicious about it 😑
The tragedy of Christopher Eccelston is gut wrenching. He got burned by the big wigs at the BBC, who black listed him, saying he was a diva and "he was too tired" to keep going. Fun trivia; this is the meta context for the Harriet Jones scene in the Christmas Invasion, where Ten destroyed her career by saying "doesn't she look tired?" They literally kicked the man while he was down. He was my first, like so many, and he deserved so much better. I miss him all the time 🥺
I’m not sure there’s conclusive evidence to support the line in The Christmas Invasion being a dig at him, I think that could just be a coincidence. But it’s a real shame he fell out with the show runners and that the BBC misrepresented things. He’s always been proud of his work on Doctor Who though, and I’m glad he’s made peace with his experiences enough to do the Big Finish audio dramas.
@@Will-nn6ux you may be right, this tidbit has made the rounds a couple times, but it may just be fan myth. That said, Ive seen the video where Eccelston implies this, I'll attach if I can find it again
We look forward to your replies because you always give the best context to the episodes! Eccelston did deserve so much better 😩
yesss! this is such a great and interesting review. 💙💙I haven't watched this episode in ages so wouldn't have picked up on any of these great points had you not pointed them out. my special interest is neurodiversity and what you were saying about children's experiences not having needs met and about like the Doctor's faces being sort of like a metaphor for character development with regeneration, when you look at that more closely, it ALL literally is made up of this - the whole show and the whole character of the Doctor is so intrinsically connected to & based on neurodivergence (yet it's never directly acknowledged). and with the "multiple personalities" observation, DID (formerly MPD) is the impact of trauma! it's the body's way of trying to hide the traumatic memories from itself and others in order to protect itself. I'm not sure the Doctor would be an accurate representation of DID in itself, but that stood out to me as an interesting reflection - and I think there are definitely aspects of dissociation handled and explored with the Doctor's experiences and character arcs and his overall life. the processing of trauma is not only neurodivergent in itself, but also I think this particular experience of trauma comes from a neurodivergent perspective, especially seeing as neurodivergent people are more likely to be subjected to trauma and face injustice - there is a lot of overlap. I believe this is why Doctor Who resonates so closely with many neurodivergent people. the way it handles grief is so reminiscent of how us humans struggle to process that too, and it's beautiful. (Torchwood is constructed with this in mind too, also Torchwood is practically if ADHD was a show lol)
This is such a wonderful perspective and we're really glad you enjoyed the video, Squiggle! The Doctor deffffinitely has a bit of trauma so what you're saying about hiding bad memories and protecting oneself makes a lot of sense. It's awful that neurodivergent people are still subject to be treated unfairly today - more people need to watch this show and learn some dang life lessons!! We think that the Doctor is such a great character because of all the changes they go through, like there will always be a level of relatability to the Doctor no matter who you are. Love your thoughts, thanks for sharing with us :)
@@TimeyWimeyTalks yeahhh! he's often very relatable and there's so much to think about in terms of how the Doctor thinks and what he lives by. and like because he's always running, he's so eager to move on rather than accept who he was in the past because that's not who he feels like he is or who he wants to be, because the circumstances that shaped who he was weren't in his control and the Doctor needs to be in control. he is always so focused on saving the world and making sure everything is ok (rather than waiting around or listening to other people's opinions) because that's what his purpose is and he needs to do it in order not to be a bad person and to not let others get hurt like he has been. it's always "who is the Doctor" but not "how is the Doctor" /j I just watched the episode now and accidentally ended up writing a whole analysis (which I'll probably use elsewhere) but I'll post it as a reply here anyway in case you're interested lol but you don't have to read it I hope that's ok. -
the Doctor is so similar to the "Doctor" Jex that when he yells at him it's like lashing out at himself. there's so much guilt and shame and frustration and desperation in his voice. he's scared to confront himself and angry about what he can undergo to do, like what he's capable of, the lengths he will go to - and resentful/jealous of how much easier others can have it or how immoral others can be. the amount of shame and embarrassment that comes to him with using people and leaving people to die in order to, I guess, fulfil his own needs - and he can't stop, he always needs companions and he needs these adventures. he needs others to ground himself, even though he's ashamed of that, and he's ashamed of how much they care about him and believe in helping him. when he doesn't allow himself to be protected, things get too bad for him and that's shown in how Jex chooses to be shot by Kahler-Tek and chooses to let himself down because he believes that's the only way to solve everything else and protect others, but the Doctor knows he can't, he has to heal by staying alive and enduring all of these things and letting others get hurt in the process in order to stop more pain. so he's kind of learning a lesson and confronting himself in this episode even though it's not directly. it's also about unity and acceptance like you discussed. (+)
I love the shot of the Doctor saying "You don't get to decide when and how your debt is being paid" while he's filmed talking through the bars, like he's behind them just as much as Jex is. it's accurate: he did decide on his debt, he did decide to be a Doctor, this episode is that realisation. and when Jex says "You want to hand me over. There's no shame in that. But you won't" it's very reflective of mental health. it's like saying there's no shame in feeling guilty and hating yourself, but you can't just feel that way forever or leave things like that, you have to move forward and learn to accept yourself and heal yourself in order to make a safe space for others to heal. I love the message and the way it's shot and played and framed. it's realllly good. and the Gunslinger ends up protecting the town just like the Doctor has ended up protecting the universe! and the Gunslinger is referred to as an "angel who fell from the stars", and the 10th Doctor is referred to as a "lonely angel" by Marie Antoinette in The Girl in the Fireplace.
another way his pain manifests is the Doctor is kind of always primed for danger and jeopardy, like he doesn't call himself a war hero but his whole life is still effectively a battle to win. this episode is about one series before he regenerates into the 12th Doctor, so he goes from being the 9th Doctor who's grounded but traumatised to the 10th Doctor who's a lonely anxious mess to the 11th Doctor who takes a fun and silly approach in an attempt to forget, to the 12th Doctor who is very rational(ish) and deeply thinking. which is interesting if you adopt the theory that his regenerations are based on what he needs for himself. and OOH you know those times that Daleks have said to him "you are a good Dalek" or "you would make a good Dalek", I just realised what it is about him, it's because Daleks run on hate and fear (like how Missy says they channel emotion through a gun) and the Doctor runs on fear, and is very much affected by hate, like a product of trauma. he's just incredibly creative with how he deals with it - sort of like how Oswin was a dalek but dreamed herself not to be. he is always trying to help and is always trying to win.
This is your best review yet in my opinion. Profound commentary. This episode is one of my favourites actually, as you say, very underrated. And incredibly well shot as well might I add, one of the most visually impressive episodes of the whole show even 12 years later
Wow, thank you, dwfan91!! Glad you also think this one is underrated, and it definitely was really well shot. Crazy to think that was that long ago! There's so much to appreciate about this show 🙏
Great review! You have some real wisdom. Personally, I’ve always really liked this episode.
Thank you for saying so! On a second watch this one surprised us, glad you enjoyed :)
First comment, just want to set the tone: I'm glad you all voiced your feelings on the political undertones of this episode and could relate them to your own experience today. There will almost certainly be people who comment to give you hell about it, but don't take that shit. Speaking your truth is what America is all about, and injecting life lessons into entertainment is what Doctor Who is about! Keep up the great work and suffer no fools 💯
Thank you, we were so passionate about this one!! And yes, we're keeping it all in mind cause lord knows we both disagree too 😂 We appreciate it, excited to keep going and spitting 💯% FACTS w/ your help...thanks Jack!
You ask for our theories, this is my own secret story rather than a theory. I like to think that 11 told his rebel flesh double to save himself to the sonic because he was identical to the Doctor and would go back and get it then upload it to the library as a way of saving him. That way River would essentially have the Doctor with her always. I’ve never seen this idea put forward, but it seemed such an obvious potential plot line that could one day be picked up, otherwise why include it? I’m just an old romantic lady, and still remember watching the very first episode back in 1963. It’s been a theme throughout my life and dreams for 60 years.
I absolutely love that story! To see how much river loves the doctor yet she always feels like he doesn't love her back. Rose got her doctor why can't river 😭 I grew up watching doctor who with my dad and this was his favorite show :D being able to grow up with a show is just such a gift.
You guys mentioned watching Classic Dr Who for this episode, I think you'd really like Spearhead from Space or City of Death, they're both really good episodes of the original show but I don't know if you can access them easily in America
