    *Today, it is NEVER a good idea to use any / new software from Microsoft.* Microsoft HAS TO invest almost 10% of its profits in security, i.e. almost US$ 1 billion, in order to get its patchy security architecture under control. Otherwise China and Russia would have an even easier game with Microsoft. *In addition, ALL Microsoft products are now MUCH too expensive, at least by factor 10: For example, Microsoft's endpoint protection* costs as much per month as other great products cost per year(!). *Or: Are you interested in the trivial product Microsoft Planner? Be warned: M$ Planner Plan 2 costs over 30$ / month! For a simple, trivial planning tool!* *It's even worse: For Office 2003 you got support and the product was about 30x cheaper and had a professional, very stable quality.* *Modern Microsoft software is much more expensive, has always felt like early beta software for years and of course you have to pay if you want support today. ANY free Microsoft* “support” is just a black hole where Microsoft collects complaints but ignores them. You can recognize this very easily and quickly, for example, if you google any Office problem and then see that Microsoft has known about the problem for 10 years or more. But: ignored.

    I'm fine with the imperfect Windows 11. It feels much easier to uninstall stuff using CP than in Settings. I still prefer Windows to Mac and Linux because of the stability of MS 365 apps on Windows and because I often use some apps that are only available on Windows. But yeah, wondering why it's so hard to integrate CP features into Settings while they had to rewrite the entire OS.

    It took me several days to get rid of all the garbage Windows 11threw at me. Creating a local account, logging out of Microsoft account, deactivating search, installing Libre office instead of Windows office. Only Apple's aggressive pricing of memory prevented me from buying a mac. Because of the developements in Windows I am using Linux for more than a decade. were it not for a lack of printer and scanner drivers I would run everything with Linux. And thanks to the incredible piower of today's chips, one can run Windows very well in virtual machines. This makes me almost wonder wether Microsoft had been bought by Mr Musk...What use is an operating system which renders your computer useless, unless you put half of it into the "drunk tank"?

    I introduced Loop to my law firm at the first opportunity. (We heavily use the full M365 Business suite, including SharePoint Online.) Like many software applications (and certainly not confined only to MS), it was about 80% ready for prime time upon its release. I expected that. I always expect that. That's how the software arms race works these days. But Loop is intriguing, we found good uses for it from the start, and we've noticed (and appreciated) the gradual improvements. I have Notion, too, and it does leave Loop wanting in many respects. There is no point in denying it. But I suspect it will not always be that way; in fact, I am sure Loop will continue to offer features one cannot find in Notion. The migrating Loop "boxes" are a major plus. So, I'm curious to see what v.2 will accomplish. If I had a vote, I would see Loop expanded to a desktop version for macBook. I would also see it improve the Shared Locations feature a bit. Still shaky and occasionally buggy. Third, and this will sound picky, I'd like to see Loop inherit more of the editing features available in Word and PowerPoint. Last, for cover art, I would really like to be able to access Bing or another (full) Web library of photos. The stock images are really good, but sometimes there isn't much variety - depending on search parameter.

  • @BenoitLamarche
    @BenoitLamarche 16 дней назад

    There may not be a published roadmap for Loop but features are being worked on per the response to user feedback. I personally would like to have equations capability. I wasn't able to save my pages as a template - it gives an error.

  • @driver288
    @driver288 16 дней назад

    Hi! Loop is still free to use for Microsoft account holders or with Microsoft 365 for home or family. But if you use Microsoft 365 for business you need the business standard plan and up. Not even the basic license include it which is strange to me since basic is all about the cloud apps of which Loop is one. I come from the other direction going from OneNote that I find limiting to Loop which is much better but Microsoft’s strategy for sharing outside of your org is very confusing and not on par with OneDrive even though the loop pages reside there. Very strange. I am waiting for version 2.0 to appear in my tenant though… I just signed up for Notion the other day and haven’t really played around with it much. It does look very much like Loop is mimicking Notion but of course tied in to the M365 suite of apps. If Loop is getting any kind of database I assume it’s SharePoint List based. Access databases can easily be migrated to SharePoint lists and then be manipulated either in Access or lists/web but the database tables keep their relations. That would be easy to transform to a Loop component I guess.

    Loop is still very awkward to share. If I have a Loop in an Outlook email then it doesn't automatically check that recipients have access to the loop as happens with other M365 linked resources. Controlling the sharing is just as awkward. I am still waiting for it to appear in OneNote and PowerPoint, an d to be able to generate or update loops from PowerApps.

    • @ThisWeekinIT
      @ThisWeekinIT 17 дней назад

      That's a interesting point about sharing. Certainly it could be improved.

  •  19 дней назад

    I'd use Loop for team collaboration if it was more integrated with SharePoint Online. I organize projects using different folder structures and what I'd expect is to have a .loop file at the root of the folder in SharePoint that would open the Loop Workspace. Also, if they integrated Loop as part of the SharePoint stack (like Office, Stream, ClipChamp, etc.), Governance and Security would be much easier for IT Admins. What do you think about that?

    • @ThisWeekinIT
      @ThisWeekinIT 17 дней назад

      I'm not sure Loop will be integrated into the governance and security features of M365 quickly or at all. Loop is I think more targeted at smaller companies that might otherwise be using something like Notion rather than big enterprises. But as there's no public roadmap for Loop, we don't know what the plans are.

    I'm increasingly considering such a backup solution for the tenants I manage. Especially for Sharepoint libraries that contain critical data that needs to remain available for at least 5 to 7 years like financial documents. Accidental deletions can take a while to get noticed, as users don't realize what they've done, and the default recovery methods are rather limited in such case.

Though it hasn't been clear whether its our responsibility or not, seems to becoming more clear that it in fact is. These 'solutions' do not address the fundamental problem. MS needs to remove 3d party drivers from the kernel, and provide an update mechanism (like ChromeOS) with multiple OS partitions, where a botched update can seamlessly switch back to the 'pre-update'' OS, thereby temporarily blacklisting the offending update. No 3d party drivers in the kernel should finally allow some badly needed kernel improvements. Hiding behind so-called EU anti-trust regulation is weak at best. I tend to consider it a lie: the EU demanded equal access for other security providers, not guaranteed 3d party kernel access. The EU doesn't tell a company how to go about its business. It is MS itself that chose the easy way out. Also, interesting fact: the complaints brought to the EU came from other US security companies. In short: MS is as guilty as Crowdstrike for this mess, probably more so.

    This appears to relate to a deeper issue, where the current leadership in government & companies seem to have lost sight of empowering specific people to own the process of a particular function and refraining from interfering, while still holding said individuals responsible for outcomes. It is no wonder that we have the current clown show of net zero targets which are only possible in their imaginary world. Why don't we have engineers making engineering decisions? How can we expect Microsoft to have a stable system if a politician is allowed to force architectural decisions on MS? Prescribe outcomes and stop interfering with process. This always causes more problems. When and how did we start taking people's professional skills for granted, incredibly arrogant and disrespectful behaviour.

    Extreme bullshit with the EU stuff. You blamed EU the most among CrowdStrike, Microsoft and the Sysadmins. Your logic that implementation of security API would have solved this is very flawed. This sensor product is designed to run low in the kernel and observe EVERYTHING. Most likely, CrowdStrike wouldn't migrate sensors to Microsoft API due to limitations and effort needed. Microsoft can't force the migration because Windows features are practically NEVER deprecated. So these companies would keep using kernel access. You are ultra biased towards Microsoft so your opinion about any incident regarding Microsoft is not trustworthy. I'm sorry but it is the truth.

    • @ThisWeekinIT
      @ThisWeekinIT Месяц назад

      I didn't blame anyone. I just asked where blame should be assigned and concluded that all parties might reconsider their positions. And I also pointed out that Microsoft and third-party security vendors might give customers the choice of running sensors in kernel or user space, allowing customers to choose whether they prefer deeper protection or greater resiliency against potential mishaps as we saw last week.

  • @karlfimm
    @karlfimm Месяц назад

    This is a very biased video. The EU didn't block Microsoft from making a security API for 3rd parties. It blocked Microsoft from making a security API for 3rd parties but allowing their own product (Defender) to bypass that API to get an unfair advantage. That's classic anti-competitive behaviour.

      You sure apple not doing that? And as a user I frankly don't care. If I can get a more stable OS and a free antivirus out of box then I consider that a win win situation. 😅

      well then if others want to bypass that API, then they can just do that by making their own operating system no? fair game.

      The point is the EU needs to apply this rule across the board, not just tell Microsoft it can't do something but then allow Apple to do exactly that. Who is being anti competitive? Microsoft or the EU?

    was the lack of gradual rollouts caused by the EU? was the lack of proper testing in the kernel driver EU's fault? did the EU force a ton of admins to install a closed-source kernel module? The reason why almost no admin installs crowdstrike on Linux (explaining why it wasn't on the news the crash on debian) is because having a tainted kernel (tainted being the official term) is a huge source of potential issues. Don't forget that Linux has around 90% of the server market. Also, there are more secure ways to protect a Linux server, such as running containers (cgroups which is the industry standard with socket) with apps behind selinux or tomoyo if you need syscall level enforcement.

      Exactly my thought. They coded there update like morrons, made a huge mistake by forcing this update without proper testing, a friday (never do that) and they blame EU ??!!? I know some poeple are gona say this is not microsopft fault, it's CrowndStrike's fault and i partially agree. But why do they test the update without checking the channel used for it ?

      @@nonofx31 CrowdStrike didn't blame the EU. That was Microsoft. I don't know whether CrowdStrike is commonly installed on Linux servers. But don't compare securing Linux with Windows. Windows is ubiquitous in the end-user computing space. And that means unlike a server, that it is exposed to interactive users with no education in computer security. Most security incidents on Windows stem from an action initially taken by an end user. Linux servers don't generally face that issue.

      @@ThisWeekinIT i never talked about Linux, not once. This has nothing to do with Linux. Microsoft and CrowndStrike are both to blame for this, at different degree. Nobody else. And CS proposes a 10$ Uber eat card as compensation... WTF ! I like your channel by the way. I learn interesting stuff in your video.
