    Good video. But after watching Ayu fishing and Mainstream fishing in Japan it seems a better idea to get a rod/pole much similar to those instead of these short "tenkara" rods. The British Whip-Poles are much more similar to the Ayu rods. It's an interesting thing to think about. Keep up the good work.

    Maybe a little gimmicky for you but I came up with an easy to move stike indicator using a hopper as the indicator. Using a football shaped silicon bobber stopper, size small (sold on Amazon $9.00 for 1,200) I feed it onto the hook of the hopper with the wire loop pointing toward the hopper eye. Then, feed your tippet through the eye of the hopper and straight into the wire loop of the stopper, pulling a couple of feet or so through. Gently pull the line through the football stopper by pulling the wire tag. Tie on your nymph, set your depth, and get to fishing. The hopper will move up and down the line with just the right amount of friction to not curl your tippet, yet also has enough friction to get a hookset in the event a fish takes the hopper. Clear as mud? Anyway, it seems a bit fiddely at first but you soon it takes little effort. I subbed.

      @@KeiryuRodCo I went out this afternoon for my first Tenkara trip. I have a Mizuchi zx340 Zoom. Although I had never cast a Tenkara, I was able to quickly get the hang of it and caught 3 heavy chinquapin bream. The fight was awesome but I was a bit underwhelmed by the reach. I was using a level line about 6" shorter than the rod and a two foot 4x tippet. My next trip out I think I will give a longline a go. I am thinking I should be able to cast at least 15-20 feet of level line. The fish seemed to be just at my maximum length. It was too hot and, sweating like a sow, I did not want to stop and re-rig. I ordered some bobber stoppers today and will shoot some photos of the rig as soon as I get them in. I couldn't find my other ones. I have been out of the loop for so long I have to gather all of my gear back up. I will shoot you a line as soon as I get them.

  • @barry4fish
    @barry4fish 2 месяца назад

    Wonderful, hope to order one soon, thanks. The advice you gave about holding the rod outward instead of back too far (to prevent breakage), is usually caused by someone attaching a line that is too long, makes a tendency to lift rod backwards too much. My rule is that casting line plus tippet should not be any longer than 1 ft. longer than the rod, otherwise you have to hand-line the fish in to get it close to you for release. Also by the way, I have cases for all 9 of my Nissin rods, the Zerosum case is nice but others are just thin nylon - they are older, maybe they more recently stopped including them. I want one of these for micro fishing.

    • @KeiryuRodCo
      @KeiryuRodCo 2 месяца назад

      Thanks! Yes, I agree on the 1 ft. extra length. That is generally what I do. In terms of cases, yes Nissin incudes fabric cases, but no hard cases.

    David @KeiryuRodCo doesn't know this, but he's my Yoda. After utilizing mostly Owner trout rigs or fabricating my own copies I've recently incorporated more Euro nymphing, as it lengthens my season as well as mixing it up. There is one thing in this video I DO NOT recommend. Perhaps it's the perspective of the camera, but I try not to allow my line to be at a shallow angle compared to the tip section of my rod (during drifts and casting, of course.) My reasoning is that if I allow my tip to drop and the line to lay at a shallow angle I've experienced my girth hitch loop "issues". Issues where wind loops can form after lifting and casting which create loops and knots, or where the girth hitch loosens and slides down my rod a bit, or the dreaded "where the f did my line go!?!" Disclaimer: these issues seem to happen more on my rotating lillian rods, but the wind loopsz/knots/tangles may occur on the traditional non-rotating lillians.

    • @KeiryuRodCo
      @KeiryuRodCo 4 месяца назад

      Thanks for the feedback! (both the Yoda part :) and the input on the loop issues). If I follow your logic correctly, I could see the line to rod angle being an issue, although I don't think I do that too much (will try to observe next time I'm out). One thing I do now to minizmize the dreaded loop slide is to really moisten the girth hitch knot. I feel that definintly helps. Tight Lines!!

    • @MRptwrench

      @KeiryuRodCo mmoist. Yes. I agree. I do dip the loop in the stream and visually check. Again, rotating Lillian? Needs more of my attention. My TN Provo? Never lets go. I really can't contain my enthusiasm for everyone and everything at Keiryu Rod Co.

    Always interesting to see different setups. I use 18 and 24 ft rods with braided polypropylene line near rod, 4 ft Tenkara PVC floating line and 4 ft tippet (6 lb). A small shot is attached to tippet to put the hook in front of the fish. Flies and hooks are attached to tippet using a 6" braided line leader and not directly tied to tippet. I use a traditional Keiryu float rather than markers. Hooked on traditional Keiryu because it catches fish.

      Super intriguing set-up. You've got the small shot on the tippet and flies on the 6" leader, so I wonder if this reduces the felt resistence of the small shot? Many thanks for sharing!!

    As a frequent tenkara nympher, I was thrilled to fish a rod designed with nymphing in mind. Most tenkara rods are soft action to twitch soft hackle flies. I use deep nymphing rigs with weights, indicators and dropper flies and the Inyo has the backbone to cast any nymphing rig (bounce rigs, Euro rigs, std. nymph rigs and dry/dropper rigs), set the hook (even bigger barbed hooks like stoneflies or hoppers) and play bigger fish and turn them in fast water. As a bonus, it also works great with small to medium streamers and poppers. No, it's not likely going to be your first tenkara rod but it is a great tool in your tenkara quiver of rods.

    • @KeiryuRodCo
      @KeiryuRodCo 8 месяцев назад

      Hi, thanks for the comment. Certain keiryu / fixed line rods are definitely capable of landing 10lb catfish, especially longer rods that can absorb more energy. We currently sell a carp rod (the Nissin Shoryu Koi) which is rated 12lb and can certainly go beyond that with proper technique. Our most robust rod that we make is the TN Provo. It was developed as a heavy nymphing rod and is rated 3X (which translates into approx. 8.5lb). With that said, many of our customers have caught fish in the 9-10 lb. range with it, and I believe with proper technique it could handle a 10 lb. catfish (and baits up to .75oz as well). Feel free to contact us directly with any additional questions you have.

      Hi Dany, Yes, you can use it to fish the surf from the beach for perch, etc. or for fishing off the jetty. For surf fishing, we would recommend a floating line. For the jetty, where more depth is required a good rig would be a sinking line to get deep: • 12-13 ft. 30lb Spiderwire braid, Hi-vis • 3-5 ft. of 4-5X Fluorocarbon • 2-3 BB split shot weights

    The river I fish on has not only trout, but Steelhead, Coho and Chinook in the 10 plus range, what would be the best rod to have if I'm targeting trout and end up hooking a much larger fish?

    • @KeiryuRodCo
      @KeiryuRodCo 2 года назад

      Hi Todd. It would be the TN Provo, although 10 plus would be a real test. We recommend 4X tippet (6-7 lbs) for it, although many use 3X.

    I thought I read Keiryu can be used with real bait and floats.

    • @KeiryuRodCo
      @KeiryuRodCo 2 года назад

      That is correct and it definitely can. Traditional Japanese Keiryu did that, although now about 40% half use flies. We are evolving Keiryu in the U.S. beyond its traditional application in Japan. Our philosophy is to adapt Keiryu to American angling and fixed line fly fishing. In the end, Keiryu excels in many applications - fly, bait, river, lake, surf fishing, etc.

    that looks awesome-- in the fall here we vertical jig for walleyes (up to 24 inches) using large jigs or jig raps-- would you recommend this rod for something like this?

    • @KeiryuRodCo
      @KeiryuRodCo 2 года назад

      Hi Earl. Yes, you can definitely vertical jig, fun! The 24" walleye is a test for the rod, no doubt, but I beleive the Provo can handle it (assuming the angler does their part). I say let it rip and if anything goes wrong, we've got your back!!

    What size nymph did you fish?

    • @KeiryuRodCo
      @KeiryuRodCo 2 года назад

      Size 16-18 for the top nymph. Size 10 for bottom. I’ll often start with size 12 on the bottom but increase size if I don’t think I’m getting deep enough, fast enough (which I did here). Note, conventional wisdom says hook size/3 = tippet size. I often stretch this rule as I’m biased to getting deep. With our T100 or the 620, I’ve never had an issue with 5x tippet handling size 10.

      Do you add splitshot with your nymphs? Or do you only add splitshot if you’re fishing with bait, like salmon eggs or worms?

      @@vladd5291 Thank you. We are constanlty learing and applying new knowledge, especially has how it relates to Keiryu fishing here in the US.

      @@vladd5291 I rarely add splitshot to nymphs but I have in a few situations where the water was deep with strong current. I see no issues with using splitshot when you need to, otherwise you are going to miss the strike zone, so why not? With the bait rigs, like the Owner Yarn Marker rig I definitely recommend splitshot. 1 about 8" from hook or 2 about 12" hook.

      Easier to carry. Usually we're walking up or down creek/river all day through brush and uneven terrain. A smaller net is ligher and gets caught up in things less.

    Using the upward facing tag on the dropper is way weaker than using the downward facing tag. Yes it makes your fly stand off but the loss of strength especially in such light nylon is not worth it

    • @KeiryuRodCo
      @KeiryuRodCo 2 года назад

      Hi Peter. The difference is the 4 loops on the surgeons knot. We ran a series of tests using a digital gauge comparing the 4 loop upward tag to a 3 loop downward tag on 5X, 6X and 4 lb mono. The average results were virtually identical (3.18 vs 3.13 breaking point). With that said, for those prefering a 3 loop connection, I would recommend a downward facing tag. For those who want a more perpendicular tag that is less likely to tangle, then I would go with the 4 upward. Cheers.
