Tim's Bluegrass Videos
For almost 30 years I have been attending music festivals (predominately Bluegrass Festivals) and recording video for personal use. While recently converting the many hours of analogue video to digital format I decided to share some of my favorite players and bands with others. As time passed some of these players and bands have come to mean a great deal to me. It is hoped that watching these clips will bring some joy to others.

After many years friends and acquaintances have talked about the crazy storm that hit the Frontier Ranch Festival July 27/ 97. I put together this footage that I took the morning after the storm. Luckily, to my knowledge no one was hurt.

JD Crowe and The New South, Through The Years
I saw this band at SPIGMA? (Springfield Bluegrass Mo). We were blown away !. And...do they still do the Fish Song ?! LoL!. I'm sure they got asked to do it alot " I lobster and never flounder...". If you're still going strong, good on ya' !!!!!
This is HOT!!
Kottke on that slide...
Thanks for posting this video. I recorded on vhs when it first came out but lost it and have been looking for this for twenty years or more. It’s easy to hear both players- rhythm and lead simultaneously more than any other flatpick recording. Both players are fabulous. Thanks again!
I was a big fan of Front Range when I lived in the Denver area. Bob and Mike’s harmonies were the best. I miss them.
I was there too. Great shows.
Great stuff..92 seldom scene band.
Shame that the Bass takes away from enjoying the rest of the Band.
The bass is great!
Does anyone have the exact date of this set? I'd like to know for the book I'm writing about the JMBs.
There is only one Sam Bush, baby!
Year after year..this band leads bluegrass music as one of the best.bands ever..tim obrien....rip Charles sawtelle..🎉
Nice banjo backup during vocals and solos. Most players nowadays blast straight through without backing off much at all and keep the banjo roll going. Very annoying and not dynamic.
I saw every episode of Fire on the Mountain on TNN back in 1985. I remember this well. It was such a great program, filmed at the Stompin' Grounds in Maggie Valley, North Carolina. When they took it off the air, I was mad.
30:06 was my favorite song to listen when going fishing with dad.
David has a Bluegrass voice, this band is on point…☮️🎶🔛🌎
The great Charles sawtelle.on his 37 Martin guitar..rj
Good Lord they were amazing!!!!! Russell is king!
They are still amazing
Finest female voice ever
Tim Obrien. Was awesome. Display of singin.and mando playing..band was so tight..wernick.sounds great.and nick and Charles. Just a great guitar player..this is a hall of fame band.for bluegrass music forever..just as imp.as flatt and scruggs..scene band and monroe..hot rize left a mark and changed bluegrass music...rj
Band sounds great.and the 37 Martin is awesome sound..none other..herringbone 37 guitar.
Delightful 🎉
Hey thanks for posting! Great memories of playing with this group.
Thanks for posting the video. I was friends with both and picked some with Butch. When on the east coast Butch would stop in to hear me when I was performing.
I miss the Johnson Mountain Boys. Dudley still has his vocal chops.
they needed to turn up her mic.
Can anyone please list band members? Thanks
Please look at the description of the video. Band members are listed
Tim O'BRIAN: another West Virginia product
This is the guy in the Scruggs video, he was playing banjo with about 30 other banjoists
@mikebastiat There is no doubt he did, he was very calculating. Being that way probably earned him an extra couple million over the life of his career!!!
Traditional Ties was me favorite cassette. I wore it out.
Hey, it's great to get this blast from that past -- I'm guessing about 40 years ago (1984?). That was us, honored to be included in David Holt's excellent show. Trivia Dept: A few typos in the song list, and the first song is actually called Going Across the Sea. And I'm from NY City originally, the Bronx to be exact, to answer an inquiry. Glad this got posted and yall like it!
That's a great 84 tape of the early band..great to Charles sawtelle play..love the 37 guitar..also watch the 40th anniversary..great music on the show with fiddle and dobro..love the whit.lineman song..love your banjo playing..always great with you and tim..rj
So good! thanks for the upload. I love all version of 3TO, but this one is hot, hot, hot!
Third time is a charm...🍻👍
Love these guys!

Thanks Very Much
Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Greece
Thanks for sharing this Tim. Was there too with 4 friends. We were camping on high ground at the back of the upper field. Literally cheated death several times that night. Two of my friends were in their tent trying to hold it down when they decided it was too bad and ran to the SUV I was sitting in. A minute later a huge tree came crashing down smashing the tent they had just been in. Dodged many more scary situations that night. Ended up on the main stage seeking shelter. In a great act of kindness the main man promoter loaned us his daughter's car, gave us some cash, and directions to the nearest motel to dry off.
Ohhh Thanks!!! Love it!!!!
I was there with my Uncle and cousin
Goooood stufff
This isn’t the original Hot Rize lineup. Mike Scap was the original guitar player and Charles played bass. That being said, that configuration was pretty short lived.
Found these fellows right around the time of this recording. Grabbed the Pure Homemade Love cassette on a whim in Seviervill TN at a little hole-in-the wall music store around 1995 and have been a fan ever since! Love these guys, their great music and their humble, Christian values.
Thanks for this upload. It's fantastic.
James 3:11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
I was there. My dad was playing with the bluegrass strangers. Crazy!
Awesome! Uncle wearing the 5 string out!
Yes sir
Great Virginia boy from Martinsville, Virginia
Great stuff
Tim O'Brien, still one of the finest musicians alive. One of my favorites is Lamp lighting time on the valley.
Great band
this'll be good!
