We find a crew looking for water to fight a fire less than 4km from our Mushroom Farm. Jessica helps them to find a creek that has enough flow to fill their truck. Firefighters will hike through the dark forest to the fire that was started by lightning only hours earlier. They will drag hoses and douse the flames with water from Elk Creek in their truck.

      You would have to check with government agencies, as most of the time there are restrictions with moving firewood/logs across borders as they are trying to prevent the spread disease and such. If you are are able to transport the logs, they should be minimal issue to the logs with transporting them.

    Oh yah, with the groceries prices in canada we gotta grow food ourselves. I started gardening last year for the 1st time but vegetables are hard to grow. It depends on the soil a lot. Mushrooms seems easier but i might be mistaken.

      hi! No need to biol the water used for misting to create a humid environment for your mushrooms to grow. You may want to let the water sit for a few hours to let any chlorine dissipate as it's toxic to mushrooms.

    Hello Jessica, I'm in southern ontario canada and really thinking about starting up a mushroom farm to do as a pastime in retirement to alleviate boredom. I am intending to make a decent enough size farm to begin selling at farmer markets, and possibly to restaurants. I'm wondering what if any certifications or licensing is needed other than just registering a business . Are there any seeing as it's food related? I've also been following another youtube site called grocycle who are in the UK ... I find this all very fascinating and want to set myself up on a property to do this near Kitchener Waterloo.

    • @GrowMushroomsCanada
      @GrowMushroomsCanada Год назад

      Hi Tom. I would check with the local health authority. If selling fresh mushrooms, in my experience there was no special requirements to sell at markets. However if you are making a value-added product like pickled shiitake then there would be some hoops to jump to satisfy their requirements for public safety. Have fun!!

    I think all gardeners should be growing Wine Cap Mushrooms in shady corners of their gardeners. I did lasagna layers of cardboard, straw and wood chips and had great success. If planted in early spring, they generally fruit in autumn in Ontario and twice a year (spring and fall) every year after that as long as you keep adding wood chips and straw to feed the mycelium. I even had success with leaf mulch. I always get my grow kits from Grow Mushrooms Canada (excellent products and service). Thanks for the video.

    A stunning display of Panellus longinquus, fruiting from red alder New Year's day 2023, just down the road from our mushroom farm in Sayward BC. Although they look like a pink oyster mushroom, with gills radiating like a fan on the underside of a deep pink cap - their edibility is unknown. Some mushrooms are deadly poisonous, so never eat a wild mushroom without being 100% sure of it's identification. Delicious edible oyster mushrooms are very easy to grow from a kit we sell! does this produce for multiple years or just one season, using the Oyster.

    • @GrowMushroomsCanada
      @GrowMushroomsCanada 2 года назад

      Hi. It depends on the type of wood using how long you will get production. Oyster a very vigorous decomposers and tend to colonize the logs quickly, fruit quickly for a few years, and rot the log faster than say a shiitake that will take longer to first fruit, but then produce for more seasons.

    Hi Jessica I love these videos with the Herbal Jedi! You have inspired me to try to grow mushrooms myself. I’d love to buy from you but I’m in Alaska so I had to buy it from someone else. I’d love to try putting the used substrate in between logs as you’ve shown in this video. Do I need to put wax around the open cut edge of the log as you did with the plugs? Also, if I try this method, I’m concerned about the long winter of freezing temperatures. Are you able to successfully leave your logs all winter?

    • @GrowMushroomsCanada
      @GrowMushroomsCanada 2 года назад

      Hi. If you do a log stack with mushroom spawn crumbled between, it's not necessary to wax the open surface of the top log piece. If dry you may want to take steps to keep the spawn layer from drying, such as wrapping the gaps with saran wrap or cardboard, for a couple of months while they get established. Mycelium overwinters in logs in Canada in very cold temperatures, so I would anticipate you would have no trouble in Alaska also.
