For sure Delco never made an alternator for Chrysler. At first they were made by Essex as was the voltage regulator. After 1964 they were made by Chrysler.I had a 1974 Dust with the 904,a nice car, but definitely no rocket.Probably the odometer was turned back and it had over 100k miles.....It was stolen

You make it sound like there were never any Straight 8's. The V8 configuration came about early on, but was dumped in favor of the inline. Only Ford really went with the flathead V8 for many years. Until the late 40's the bulk of 8's were inline. Torque monsters.

My first car was a 1976 Dodge Dart Sport my father got for my 15th birthday in 1985. He paid $300.00 for it, it was a 3 speed manual, looked like it was painted with a broom, interior looked like a bobcat was set loose in it and the slant 6 burned more oil than gas... But it was a solid body and frame car with no rust. This was his way to teach me about cars. I had saved from summer jobs etc about $2,000 at the time and had a cousin who taught me body work and painted the car for me in the "Spirit of 76" theme with the strips. Dad helped me do a lot of the mechanical work it needed, bearings, bushings, brakes etc, Mom helped me redo the entire interior in the same Spirit theme, turned out beautiful. My grandfather who was a mechanic and had his own shop rebuilt the slant 6. He custom made a 4 barrel intake and headers, put a better cam in it bored it 20 over, ported and polished head and put after market ignition and that thing was quick! It took about the entire year until I turned 16 of work work work, but that car was perfect when I did turn 16. How did it do vs stock 80's cars in a 1/4 mile? 1980 Z28 Camaro, 350 ci , beat by 1.5 cars. 1984 GT Mustang, 302 ci, I won by 1/2 car. My cousins 1981 4.9L Turbo Trans Am, I won by 2 + cars. I'll throw in a 1972 ( I think?) Plymouth 340 Gold Duster: I won by about 1/2 car, not positive, but think he had some mild work done to it. It certainly wasn't the fastest car around running low to mid 14's, but for what it was, a big heavy car with a slant 6, it never failed to impress. I to this day wish I never sold it in 1991. It was such a solid car, looked good, ran great and I always got compliments on it.

The Hudson Hornet's 308ci engine made good power because displacement has more to do with power output than number of cylinders. A 5 litre engine will make good power whether it's an 8 or a 6.

  • @ThePaulv12

Well I happen to think the Slant 6, particularly the 225, is perhaps one of the worse I6 engines ever built. For the life of me I cannot understand why people like them so much. The reliability and durability is below par compared with any contemporary I6 of the era. I don't say these things without qualification. Firstly I'm a qualified mechanic and secondly a Mopar nut. I've had a 440, 2x 383's and a 318. I worked at a Mopar place for 7 years in Australia where the 225 was very common and they would have to be about the most troublesome POS engine that Chrysler ever made. The the amount of Slants that threw no.6 big end out through the engine block is amazing. The exhaust manifolds crack, they have no power, you can't rev them over 3600rpm, they're thirsty, they're as harsh as your mother in law which is strange since it's an inline 6 with perfect primary and secondary balance (apparently) and it has a very heavy 4 bearing crank with stupid counterweights which is why it is harsh. The Mopar LA V8 is so vastly superior to a Slant it makes any comparison ridiculous - it's small, light, revs up, makes power, is reliable dependable and durable - in short all the things an idiot Slant isn't. Just because a few make high mileage doesn't mean they're great. For example, a few of those very troublesome 4 cylinder Landrover engines in the 1980s never gave any trouble either but 90% of them did! I like inline 6 engines, my daily driver is a Barra turbo, my Landcruiser FJ40 has a 2F in it - I'm not hating on inline 6 engines, I'm hating on the 225 because it deserves it.

if not stuck the EGR is closed wide open throttle, removing it makes difference only in part throttle emissions. EGR also lowers combustion temperature during cruise, therefore also lowering detonation sensitivity.

Everyone was aware of offsetting the pistons for more power, but NASCAR banned the practice. Smoky Yunick obtained a raw block and offset the crankshaft instead of the pistons. He never got caught with this type of "cheating", and his cars tore up the competition.

The 5.2L V8 318 CI starting in 1980 was a dog with the Chrysler Spark Control System (AKA Lean Burn) These in civilian form could only make 145HP and 180 FT of torque in the 1980's M Bodies Plymouth Gran Fury (1982-1989) Dodge Diplomat (1982-1989) and the Chrysler New Yorker(1982-1983) Chrysler Fifth Avenue (1982-1989). By the 1980's due to poor fuel economy these had a "Gas guzzler Tax" of 745.00 added to the car because of CAFE standards were not met. The Police package cars either got the 5.2L 318 V-8 got 180 HP 210 Ft of torque or the 360 CI V-5 4BBL carb set up that got a 12 MPG and 215 HP and 260 Ft of torque and was discontinued in the M bodies after the 1984 model year due to poor gas mileage and lighting CAFE standards. the early 1970's and 1980's emissions crap never worked correctly all the vacuum lines would crack and leak and cause running issues. So in the 199's I worked at a Standard Oil (AMOCO) garage we would disconnect all of the emissions crap and chuck the lean burn in the trash and put in a distributor out of a 1974 or earlier 318 a GM voltage Regulator (1987-1997) Chevrolet C-1500 truck and a Holley 4 BBL carb and these 318 V-8 would get better economy and gained from 145HP to 170HP by chucking the Lean Burn emissions crap in the garbage can and also disconnected the stupid smog pump. By the way my area has no state inspection or emissions inspection either.

Where you got that in for it takes the slant six over the years was more like 16.00to 60mph and 19.00-20.00 in the1/4 the 318 you give the slant six a run that would embaris it in full.these are facts from owning both.be fore you miss lead any one get some real grease under your mopar facts like own over 17 slant six varis size from 170 198 and 225 hyper pack.and 23 318's and two 318 polys.where you got those times is false.the only factory slant six that could give the 318 a run for the money was 225super six in 1977 and 1977f for the 318 two barrel that's it cause the hyper pack was a in dealer option after 1962.i love the slant six but I have 40 years of mopar cars under my belt.even better look up utg garage on you tube ask him if your facts are spot on.!!!!!!!

Had two track records at Lakeland International in Memphis. A couple of years later my 73 Dart with 318 2bbl turned 17.67 at 73 mph. The Dart would have beat the Valiant, but the Valiant would be closing the gap quickly. Some of the most fun I've ever had behind the wheel. Used to drive the big Ford 352s crazy with the Valiant. A real sleeper. God I miss that car! Still have the Dart which now wears the Carter AVS which I had on the Slant Six.
