    Looking at one of these in my local craigslist for $100 though I already have a near-new Dewalt "lunchbox" planer. I would NEVER use a water spray on cast iron, or any machinery for that matter. Yes it will remove the Naval Jelly and splatter the residue all over your yard (hazardous waste, I used to be in that business). Two, water will get everywhere on your metal and cause corrosion. "Rust Removers" or "Rust Conversion" products are mostly phosphoric acid, which reacts with red-orange ferrous rust to chemically convert it to black iron phosphate. The darkening of the applied product you see is indicative of that chemical reaction progressing. The viscous stuff you used needed to be scrubbed in b/c the reaction only occurs at the interface of iron and product. You'd say time and energy using a thinner product. I prefer Ospho (another phosphoric acid product) which is water-thin and thus wets the pits better.. A little goes a long way and no scrubbing needed. Instructions for use are vague about whether to clean it off when finished; I simply saturate the surface with WD-40 and wipe it off. Note that exposed metal will flash rust almost immediately, particularly if you scrub it off with water. Not to worry, that flash rust is only a thin powder on the surface. I got a 14" Delta bandsaw a while back, and had a China-made 6" jointer, both needed their tables cleaned. A wet spray of WD-40 plus elbow grease and some 180 grit wet-dry sandpaper had the cast iron tables on both machines looking nice. Repeat with 220 and 400 grit, wipe off, apply past wax and Bob's Yer Uncle. No risk of wash water causing corrosion elsewhere, in places I couldn't get to. But I do have to say that the protective effect of paste wax isn't as long-lasting as I'd like. Note this process does no leave the visible nail brush marks.

    I own the same planer since it was new nearly 30 years ago. Unfortunately it was completely submerged due to my basement workshop flooding out from hurricane Ida last September. The cast iron bed was left completely rusted over with a "lovely" orange patina. Both drive motors however, survived with no ill effects. My solution to dealing with the rust was to use a rotary wire steel brush installed in my electric drill to great success anywhere there was rust present (including any bolts and gears). The cast iron surface was restored to a shiney finish. I then applied a coating of wooden floor paste wax over the surface which does double duty as both a prophylactic against rust issues in the future and also leaves the surface less frictionally resistant (more slippery) to any boards passing through the planer. As there was a considerable amount of rust dust left inside the planer I used an air hose to blow this residual dust away all the while wearing a dust mask to protect my lungs throughout the entire procedure.

Honestly I have just started to use the small wheels, but glad I bought the package that I did. The stand is pretty great and does a good job keeping all of the attachments close together. The only downside is that they are constantly covered in some kind of dust (metal or wood). Not a big deal as I just open the garage and use my blower to remove it.

    • @theshopshack3696
      @theshopshack3696 3 года назад

      Per AmeriBrade: “Yours is installed as intended for most setups, but we send a special page of instructions to put the drive wheel on the other way for one special scenario. If someone gets a 2HP setup with a horizontal mount and no pedestal stand, they have to put the drive wheel on the other way to make their motor clear a benchtop when tilted due to the length of that motor. That is so specific, that we decided not to include that information in the general instructions. We felt it would cause confusion. I could see why that viewer would be sure they're right based on what they received and I could see why you would also be pretty sure based on our other instructional videos.”

    Regarding the DC - if you remove the shroud/hood and beat it with a stick a few times then throw it in the washing machine (sans belt!) and caulk and/or weatherstrip the necessary places where pieces meet parts, you’ll notice much improved suction. I wash the hood every so often - when the suction noticeably begins to lessen. Remove the filter etc outside or you’ll have a hellofa lot of sawdust here there and everywhere!

    You've already heard from enough people about the dust chute. Yes, the Jet DC will move more air, but then you are going to have to deal with a 4" hose. Also, you'll find that DC3300 will work better if you don't plug the ports. They do need to have something plugged into them otherwise the air will take the path of least resistance. I suggest running a hose to the tool and have the floor wand attached to another and the third port plugged. That little extra airflow will allow the impeller to run at its optimal speed. Glad to see that this survived its time in the waterworks! Scott

    • @theshopshack3696
      @theshopshack3696 3 года назад

      Yes, the ports on my DC3300 are blocked off and only a single hose is running to any given tool. the upside to a larger hose is volume of air and CFM. I wish SS would update to a 4” hose and boost the motor and impeller. It can move a lot more dust at the point of collection than a 2”. I had a 52” Delta table saw prior to picking up my MV. The Jet was amazing for that saw.
