India does not have license requirements or any legal ramifications for someone calling themselves counselors, psychologist, or I've even heard "Psychological Counselors" (Whatever that means!!). India has a RCI license (Rehabilitation Counsel of India) which requires educational qualifications and verifications. BASIC requirement to be eligible for RCI and clinical practice is MPhil or MA from RCI recognized college. I completed my bachelors from Bangalore, and moved to America for Msc and PhD, and now I am licensed and practice in SF, and do some telehealth cases in India. I think more than licensure requirements, we first need to educate people on how to look for a good counselor, what questions to ask a counselor and what degrees/qualifications to look for! I run a supervision and awareness venture called MindThe Gap on Instagram where I talk to students who want to pursue psychology, and probable clients, about ways to seek the accurate help that you need in the path of mental health. You'll be surprised to know MOST of the counselors in India become one merely after doing some crash courses that run barely 3-4 months. It is almost like we are asking for interns to perform an open heart surgery!!! BEATS ME!!!
