The Cross at the Center: Sermon for October 20, 2024
Jesus came not to be served but to serve; so to follow his example, that means we can’t be worrying about whether we’re first in line. One of the costs of discipleship is putting aside our concern that everyone else knows how important we are.
In a world that constantly seeks power, Jesus calls us only to find ways to serve. Jesus calls us to see each person not as a bar to compare ourselves with, but through God’s eyes, as a beloved child of God.
Mark 10:35-45

What is Most Important to You? - Sermon for October 13, 2024
Просмотров 38День назад
When Jesus tells the rich young man that he needs to sell everything and give the money to the poor, and follow him, he is calling out the rich man's accumulation of stuff, which has come at the expense of abundant life. Only in generosity can this man experience the beauty of a life lived in community. What do you need to put down? What do you need to set aside? Mark 10:17-31 #love #sermon #ch...
Made Worthy by God's Love: Sermon for October 6, 2024
Просмотров 5114 дней назад
Jesus always lifts up the most vulnerable and invites them to his table. Communion is not a prize for the perfect, but a means of God's grace, connecting us all to each other, and reminding us that none of us are worthy on our own, but that all of us are made worthy by God's love. Mark 10: 2-16 #sermon #inclusion #communion #church #love
Stumbling Blocks and Stepping Stones: Sermon for September 29, 2024
Просмотров 4121 день назад
What are the things we hold onto because they were helpful once, even though they're not right for us anymore? What are things that once seemed useful but that now cause us to stumble? Do we recognize when the people we least expect are still doing God's work? Jesus reminds us that the life of a disciple is one of finding ways to serve rather than worrying about how other people see us. Mark 9:...
First Impressions: Sermon for September 15, 2024
Просмотров 84Месяц назад
First Impressions happen within seconds, and they're really hard to shake. Unfortunately, Jesus's words have been so twisted by people who seek to use Christianity to shore up their own power that we can wind up ashamed of the church, or think Jesus has nothing worth saying to us. Even Peter thought Jesus had come to put the Romans in their place. But Jesus knew that his vocation as the Messiah...
Persistence: Sermon for September 8, 2024

The Syrophoenecian woman shows her faith in God's abundance when she challenges Jesus's "no." She is not advocating for herself. She’s advocating for her daughter. Maybe that’s where her motivation comes from: If she were the one suffering, maybe she could just bear it; but she can’t just bear it because the one suffering is her daughter. Mark 7:24-37 #sermon #church #LCMUmich
Wash Your Hands, Doo Doo Doo - Sermon for September 1, 2024

This Gospel text gives us an opportunity to think about the things we do that are performative, that show we're good people, while at other points we may also do things that undermine our best intentions to love our neighbors. Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 #lcmumich #sermon #church
Wage Peace: Sermon for August 25, 2024

At the end of Ephesians, it seems like Paul's words echo the militarism that so often permeates American Christianity. But, Paul likes to play with rhetoric: He's taking the form of a Roman general's typical fiery speech and using it to promote nonviolence. Don't Turn Away: Sermon for August 18, 2024
Просмотров 862 месяца назад
When Jesus asks us to consider his body and blood, given and shed for us, he is calling us to see it, and not turn away; to recognize the pain. He puts his body on the line, and he is not sugar-coating what is about to happen to him. In this passage, he is asking his disciples not to look away, and to take him on as part of themselves. He is asking them to become changed. Our faith is supposed ...
A Simple Meal: Sermon for August 11, 2024

God provides Elijah with an essential meal when he is exhausted in the wilderness and can't go on. In the same way, God provides us with Communion, a means of grace that connects us to God and to each other, and gives us strength for the journey. 1 Kings 19:4-8 John 6:35, 41-51 #sermon #church #elijah #LCMUmich #food #communion
You Can't Always Get What You Want: Sermon for August 8, 2024
Просмотров 792 месяца назад
Wandering in the wilderness after their emancipation from slavery, the Israelites were commanded only to comment enough manna and quail for their daily needs - any extra would spoil. God made sure they would have enough, but not an excess. They would not have everything they could ever want, and they would absolutely not, above all, have certainty - but they would have what they needed to live ...
Uneasy Truth: Sermon for July 14, 2024

In the age of alternative facts, we are called to speak the truth when it's not convenient. John's message, silenced by Herod, was resurrected in the message preached by his cousin, Jesus. God's voice finds a way even in the most difficult times. Mark 6:14-29 #sermon #church #JohnTheBaptist #Jesus #truth
Slow, Holy Change: Sermon for July 7, 2024

Lasting change happens slowly. Jesus knew what it was like to be rejected, which is why he sent his disciples out in twos, and advised them that the people they encountered might not be ready to hear the good news - yet. Mark 6:1-13 #church #sermon #patience #jesus #ShakeItOff
Jesus's Faithfulness in the Storm: Sermon for June 23, 2024

Our faith reminds us that there is nothing we have experienced that God does not understand. There is nowhere we can lose ourselves that God cannot find us. There is no storm so big that God cannot bear it with us. Mark 4:35-41 Psalm 107 #church #sermon #lcmumich #faith #storm #jesus
Origin Stories: Sermon for June 9, 2024

The story of Adam and Eve tells us about original sin, but not in the way we often think. It's about our desire for God-like power and control, and about our unwillingness to accept the responsibility that necessarily comes with that power. Our human need to seek control can make us feel lost, but God always seeks us when we are most in need of being found. Genesis 3:8-15 #sermon #creation #Car...

Great to hear you playing! What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle? A violin has strings and a fiddle has strangs.
