Ever wondered how Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) control motor speed? In this video, we break down the basics of VFDs, also known as Adjustable Speed Drives (ASDs), Adjustable Frequency Drives (AFDs), Inverter Drives, and Variable Speed Drives (VSDs). Learn how VFDs convert AC to DC, smooth the voltage with a DC bus, and use IGBTs to create a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signal that simulates ...

    I noticed that the cables are Re Black and Blue but I was told that for a 3phase 480v should be BOY brown orange yellow I’m just curious

      Good pick up. You are correct that is the proper color coordinations for 460 BOY. For some reason older Trane units they did all of their units in blue black red. They have now changed to brown orange yellow.

    Mostly agree however I would say not pre twisting solid is definitely asking for failure. Stranded it depends, 14 or smaller hand twist can get it. 12 and larger, again talking stranded, pre twist with linesman pliers. # 6 and larger; Polaris taps. I'm mostly wiring 3 phase motors, that's just what works for me.

    • @professorbutlerhvac
      @professorbutlerhvac 7 дней назад

      Thanks for commenting. I’m not saying that not twisting. It will guarantee failure. I’m just saying in my experience. The spices that I did see that failed in the wire nut were ones that weren’t twisted. I’m sure there’s thousands of spices that are not twisted that are perfectly fine. I prefer to twist.

    This is actually the most work I've seen a TAB person do. Typically they will only adjust dampers and get readings and make a list for the HVAC guys to fix. (My job). Good on u! Nice to see some guys fix issues and not kick them down the road for someone else to fix

    This was very interesting. The thing that always makes me a bit nervous about dealing with them are the thousands of potential settings involved in programming them. We work mostly with carrier and therefore ABB drives, I really need to understand the fundamentals of them better too, but understanding the internal settings of how the relays and input terminals interact would be huge. Do you have any other resources or longer form videos on VFDs?

    I was confused at fist but it started making sense. DC always needs a ground unlike AC voltage right?

    • @professorbutlerhvac
      @professorbutlerhvac 8 месяцев назад

      Both AC and DDC need a ground or a neutral to complete the circuit so the electricity can flow. When it comes to DC voltage if you power a device from a separate transformer other than the transformer that is creating the DC bolt signal you need to common both transformers. Splice both of the transformers together for the device to have power and control signal if that makes sense.
