Why Do You Want to Be a Doctor?
Просмотров 63 тыс.7 лет назад
Backstory to the video: While having lunch with some fellow classmates, we got on the topic of what question we felt was the most important to nail during a medical school interview and we all agreed on one- Why do you want to be a doctor? The conversation then trailed into talking about our individual stories and why we decided to pursue the life of medicine. All of this got me thinking of how...

Hope you enjoy! If you want to know...

sadly i cant become one due to costs
The background music 😢 can I please get the music title
Save patients lives Encourage the patients everything will be fine Do research to combat and fight diseases and illnesses.
I feel like a trash human, these people do so much for our communities and people don't appreciate them enough. Cuz I know I wouldn't be able to do it myself
Sir just found your channel and my daughter just finished high school could you recommend classes for her to take at utrgv. Her dream has always been to be a doctor and i could really use advice to get her on the right path please and thank u...
Just search "why do you want to become a doctor?" and you'll get videos about "why medicine is not worth it", "why I decided not to pursue medicine", and "how miserable the life of a doctor is". Can you imagine how overwhelmed and anxious a premed will become seeing those? I don't even want to start talking about the issue with the shortage of doctors... So thank you sooo much for creating this video! Videos like this are very much needed so premeds can see both sides and decide for themselves.
So true. I finish high school this May and I keep having doubts but I feel that if you can't stop thinking about something, then you should give yourself a chance to at least see for yourself. So I'm going to do it and I think you should too. It'd be nice to hear what decision you'll make or have made.
for real...and it makes me furious...the patience ive to scroll underneath and find these videos like ofcourse every work is frustrating but still i wanna serve myself to ppl in this world...i still wanna study ...if somebody is searching why to be doctor ...they have analyzed that its gonna be hard...i wanna know the perks to keep myself going but the videos popping up doesnt seem to do same for me😢😢😢
Money, respect, career stability, passion, want to make a difference, TIRED OF FELLOW MEN FALKING BEHIND IN PROFESSIONAL CIRCLES are my reasons
Hey just a question for the Dr.'s. Will you guys cave again in the next so called pandemic and allow the pencil pushers to dominate you all?
Thank you for sharing your inspiring stories, They are the driving force towards attendance of a healthy healthcare system.
That is good 👍 information thank you
I love to save life I want to study
So a wealthy kid who majors in drama, 3.5 gpa, an MCAT score, whose parents spend $ 50 K on manufactured personal statements and secondary application, will be chosen over a less fortunate student with 3.80 gpa who majored in biochemstry with an MCAT of 512, who had difficulty finding job after graduation and works asa store clerk to pay bills and has zero dollars to pay for synthetic application... Strange...
Great video👍
real answer : money
Being a doctor is a terrible financial decision. 8 years of not making a salary from going to school, getting paid minimum wage for another 3-7 years while working 60-80 hours a week, $250,000+ of student debt. Also, once you start making a full attending salary, don't forget you have 5-10 years of interest from the 250K you pulled for school. Yes, you start making over $170,000 a year, but that puts you in a higher tax bracket...so on and so forth
Maybe the 1er hour as doctor is when you know is not about money. 10 years after been a Dr. YOU know is not about money.
There needs to be a bit more genuineness and honesty in the replies imho. I am hoping to get into medicine. In Australia 9/10 top paying professions are doctors of one kind or another. And its male dominanted in Australia. We have doctors moving from asian countries, south aftica, england, wales, ireland etc to come to Australia PURELY for the money. Ie a doctor in south africa makes 60k a year, the same doctor doing identical thing makes 180 k in Australia. Anyone telling you money is not an incentive in Australia is not being an honest person. Would they be a doctor if there was no salary? Or if the salary was paid less than a waitress? No they wouldnt. So lets stop kidding ourselves. However in countries like the UK and like S africa where the salary of a doctor is 60-100 k, thats not a lot of money for their qualification. And there are a lot of hours working as a doctor. So per hour in those countries the pay is low. These people would make more as lawyers, engineers or working in banking. The comments about the large student debt; pets talk about that for a minute because the person made it sound like doctors are marryrs loading themselves into debt to do good for others. Make no mistake most, 80-95% of doctors are from a privileged background. Well off families. Good families. Healthy supoort. Money. A lot of atudents families pay off their doctor student fees. There are plenty of studies on the students studying medicine and most are privileged society. There are also plenty of avenues to work rural or remote areas and get incentives from govt to pay off your student loans while you work. You dont see a lot of lower socioeconomic status people becoming doctors because getting a really good education and good school grades; a lot of privileged people take that totally for granted they dont realise its not jormal to grow up going to a private school for 20k a year and do all these extra cirricular activities and have 3 meals a day, and get a car when they turn 18 from their parents and get an inheritance etc.... people born into privilege often font realise how privileged they are, many become doctors. But we want smart people as doctors. We want intelligent people hard working that make decisions most of the time because this impacts other peoples health. In america doctors are paid even more than in Australia. In Australia Doctors get home loans and they dont have to have a deposit because their job is so secure. Did you know in Australia every single med student that finishes uni is guaranteed an internship at a hospital thats paid 65-80 k a year plus over time. Not many uni jobs out there with guaranteed jobs for every single student in the country, is there? The hecs fees in oz to finish a 4 year doctorate depends if your place is supoorted by govt or full fee paying, or if you are an international student. If international the cost is 250k odd. If you are a domestic student on a govt supoorted place (most Australian are) then the cost per year depends on the uni. But its about 10-15 k a year or 40-60 k for the medicine degree. But you meed to also pay a 3 year bachelor, which is another 25 K, so all up say 65-85 k. Not 250 k unless you are an international student full fee paying. But then its the parents paying those fees, not the student. And we get back to privileged being able to study medicine. Thats a good dose of realism Yes its absolutley about money, there is an aspect of money. But most jobs are. I worked in IT and it was paid well, very well, as much as doctors. And some people were paid 500 k a year with no degree. A doctor has spent a min 7 years at uni. There is generally a trade off the more years education the higher the salary. Thats why economists say education is a great long term investment as it increases your average salary. Its why people get mbas; or one of the reasons. More money and they want leadership roles. What other profession allows you to operate on people, to save their lives, to make a genuine difference in ones life in terms of their health decisions? You can cut a tumour out and the cancer regresses. You can use technology and other tools to work out the complexities of what is wrong with someone. You get to help the unfortunate children who arent as lucky as others and get sick. I just sat a evening uni class; the lecturer is a doctor, doing his registrar at a country hospital in Australia. He just finished a 12 hour day shift. Started at 6. Ran a uni class 6-8, he is getting a bite to eat then doing a 12 hour evening shift at the hospital because the locum didnt show up and its a rural hospitAl. 24 hours straight, and teaching a uni class in between. Thats a hard worker, dedicated, and he was so professional when he taught our class. They definitely earn their salary from what i can see, some of the hardest workers around. Until they get to a consultant level. And thats when they make the really big money charge 500/hr and drop back to 40 hours a week. But its a long road to get to a consultant level
1: to play god; 2 to help people; 3 to rub my intelligence and Knowledge in people's faces; 4 freeing people from death harm and predetermined Fate 5; I want to to make my mom be herself once more one day my mom can run again instead of needing to slowly walk and then pass out from lack of blood flow 6 I want to make a combustible lemon to burn your house down
I am a pre-med applying to UTRGV SoM this cycle. I love this video, it was so inspiring! Now more than ever I want to be apart of this community to give back to those in need.
I came across this channel and totally loved it. This is so amazing and surely needs more reviews.
Thank you for this video. Please create more videos about goal of the medical students 😊
Beautiful video! Congratulations!!
I received an interview for UTRGV today. I was wondering if you have any interviewing advice.
There's like no down-votes for this video :D
A&P in 2 weeks! Wish me luck!
Don't shave the beard and thnaks for the video
Thank you for sharing
So Proud of you guys! I look forward to hearing about how great each of you do!
I would like to attend utrgv school of medicine
Peace be to you all! I'm not part of this school. However, this was VERY touching! I know getting matched is a HUGE deal! Many aren't so fortunate! Congratulations to ALL of you. I'm a Hospitalist PA in Washington, D.C. Perhaps, I'll meet some of you some day, Lord willing. I wish you ALL the best of succes in your positive endeavors!
@Cristina Medical students, HOPEFULLY, get "matched" into their desired residency programs during their 4th year of medical school. Not everybody gets matched, which is terrible, because they have to wait a year. Some NEVER get matched!😱😰😨 So they have an M.D./D.O. with no residency training. They can't work as Physicians after all of those years of hard work! They are STILL responsible for their student loans!😭💔💸 BTW, this is why the USMLE scores are SO important!😟
DR. Izadi you rock!! Watch out Oregon, beards & scrubs is headed your way!
Great camera work and narration on this video. Seems like an amazing school. Wish I would have got a chance to interview here being that it’s the closest med school to my home, but that’s the way the application cycle goes. This is the kind of vision we need for South Texas in the future.
Amazing Video! We see it and feel it. Congratulations Dr. Shawn Izadi!
This insight is priceless. Thanks for the video!
@Beards&Scrubs Beards & Scrubs I am really appreciate what you are doing. I have a question 1-should I take a gap year between under graduation school and graduate school or can I apply while I am a junior ? 2- what should I have before start my application like personal statement and recommendation letters and what else?
wow i came into your channel and i want to thank you for doing it. i want to apply into UTRGV but am from Mexico,
ADVICE: The MCAT can be taken up to 7 times in your life time, if your marks are lower and you don't have time to retest before applications open, apply. Be sure to apply more places, unless you have your heart set on a certain school. Acceptance is acceptance in my opinion. If you are rejected from everywhere or the place you really want, then you can go fix things study for longer next time and retest. It will show commitment. Or you can not apply take the time lile a doctor would to prepare for something properly and apply when your ready. Nothing wrong with a years difference unless your my age.
🙏🏿
Excellent video! x
Start making videos again :( love from Brownsville
Faaaaalllll on your kneeessss, oh herrrrreeeeee the angleesss voooiiceeesss. Oh NIGHHTTTTTT, DEVIIIIINNNEEE

Im trying to decide if I want to be premed. Thank you for this video
Update ?
Cool video!
what are the do's and don'ts of asking for your hand in marriage though?
💀
I want to acknowledge people to prevent from diseases, and to see their smile.
You should do more rotation videos! 😊
Doo more videos !!
Very inspirational video. your video motivates people to help other needy peoples. I'm always looking for this type of volunteering opportunities. I spend my extra time in volunteering and share my work on #myselflessact. It's the best platform where you can meet too many volunteers who are doing this type of activities.
this video is greatly appreciated. btw, if you see this comment please give me some advice! i understand the process of rolling admissions as stated in this video, this is why i plan to submit my application by june. however, i will not be able to take the mcat until late july (obligations & study time). is it worth it for me to apply this cycle? if you need more information feel free to let me know.
I liked your hair!
This is so amazing thank you so much for the golden advice ❤️
I've been just crying watching all these videos! I've got such a low GPA and I'm in 2nd year. There's just no hope for me left. What have I done!!!!!!!! Whyd din't I try harder! I'm just so sad right now, knowing how bad I want it but that there's people like you, already perfect and still not getting in.
MJ SPINE You still have time! Just make sure everything else is perfect! You got this ☺️
Well what about becoming an Eagle Scout. I believe that one it completely different for something you did in high school??
if you stayed involved with the scouts then yes..but if you havent stayed active with it since high school then no. An example would be you have your own troupe of young men who you are their scout master or atleast aid in them becoming eagle scouts some day.
