It was said to be uneconomic. I think if it had survived a few more years it would have been electrified and still part of the national rail network. As it is the section from Alresford to Alton survives as the Mid Hants Railway - one of the south’s premier heritage railways. But the section from Winchester Junction via Itchen Abbas to Alresford has been lifted. Part of the route is now crossed by the M3 motorway.

This one looked different from today's one because it was in 2004 and Venus transited the south (lower) part of the sun's disk. Sadly there will be no part 2 from me as it was very poorly placed this time from the UK and totally clouded out for most of us - unlike in 2004 when the weather was perfect and we could see the whole transit. Looking forward to 2117!

I saw it as well, minus the wonderful bird songs.

Particularly enjoyed the birdsong. Here in Australia, all we could manage was projecting it onto white card at cloudless intervals, and taking fuzzy shots with a camera of the projected image. It began almost in the centre of the bottom of the sun's disk, and ended by slipping off the edge of the disk at the 2o'clock position (imagine the sun as a clock face). Haven't worked out yet why our two views should be so different.

Todays transit is the second of the current pair and is the last one till 2117. It commences at 22.09 UT on 5.6.12 and ends at 04.49 UT on 6.6.12 - with slight variations depending on location and you will need to correct for local time. In Europe it is visible for a short time after sunrise on 6.6 in the US before sunset on the evening of 5.6 and in Australia and Japan the whole transit is visible - like in Europe for the 2004 transit. Use a solar filter or project on a screen for viewing.
