#51 Seed Saving Basics 101 Flowers Heirloom Leaves and Seeds #seedsaving #savingseeds #gardening
I have been saving vegetable seeds for many years from heirloom and open pollinated seeds. Over the last couple of years I had started to save my flower seeds as well. In this video I go over the basics of saving seeds. Saving seeds can be very in depth yet at the same time it can be very basic depending on what seed you are saving, if it’s a single variety, and where you live. I go over the basics and the easiest way to save pure seed. This video is by no means and in-depth dive into seed saving, there are many other factors that can come into play. One instance is if you want to be very thorough, you should save seed from a wide variety of like flowers for diversity. Another in-depth fa...

I put 2025 for my youtube intro… 😂. I mean 2024. 😊 I only have a few more farmers markets for the year. I usually stop going after our first fall frost which is typically around October 24th. As the garden changes gears & the plants are beginning to naturally die back the list of things to do changes as well. I like to leave a few things & tidy up the garden and prepare it for winter. Thank you for this video.
You’re welcome & I am glad you liked it! Thank you! 🐛 🌸
How will you get more seeds?
The boiling water treatment is only used for cut flowers. I will save seeds from the plants at the end of the growing season. 🌸😊🌸
Wow! What a great collection! I agree with previous comment, would love pics of each of them. Also, would love to know where you purchase seeds?
Thank you! I will be sure to add more pictures the next time I go over seed varieties. I think I might do a video over my favorite places to get seeds from. Until then a few of my favorites are Baker Creek, Johnnys, & Botanical Interests. 🌸
What a great selection!
Thank you! 🌸😊🌸
Hello! I leave on a Greek island (zone 10 i guess) and mahogany splendor hibiscus blooms for me in late November-early December. The flowers are gorgeous, their colour is a bit darker than the foliage, they don't last long but there are new ones every day
That is so interesting! So I bet they just need a little longer here in zone 7b. The flowers sound so beautiful! Thank you so much for the information! 🌸😊🌸
Thanks for the details on your dahlias🙂
I am glad you liked the details about the dahlias I am growing. Thank you! 😊🌸😊
Please include a picture of each of them. I’m someone that is not familiar with any of these flowers. Thank you
I will work on including more pictures. 🌸😊
Voglio provare...Quanto sale per litro d' acqua? Grazie
I use 1/2 c. of Redmond’s Real Salt to 16 cups of water for the basic brine. 😊
Everything sounds beautiful. I have quite a few of those and am always glad to hear someone who doesn’t say plant fewer varieties 😂
Thank you! 🌸 Planting fewer varieties would definitely be easier - but not as fun. Seeds are my weakness! 😂
What zone are you in?
I am in zone 7b 🌸
Good to know which ones stand up without staking 😂 Labyrinth is on everyone’s list. I’m trying Labyrinth Twist this year. It’s kind of a lavender version. Finding all of your wishlists in one place is a thing! Crichton Honey is in my wishlist as well. It. Myrtle’s Folly is a fun dinnerplate that always is a favorite for me. I thought I had lost them all last year but had one survivor
Yes! Finding all of your wishlist in one place is definitely a thing! 😂 I like Myrtle’s Folly as well. It’s a really beautiful dahlia. I will have to look into Labyrinth Twist, it sounds pretty! 🌸
The brothers label machines are great. You could attach them to the metal venian blinds
That is a good idea as well & I already have a label maker that I could try out. Thank you for the idea! 🌸
Great garden tour!
Thank you! 🌸😊🌸
We grew the brain celosia. We accidentally got a short variety, so beware. They lasted a long long time in vase though.
I haven’t tried a brain type celosia yet - but I have wanted to try them. When I order seed I will be sure to make sure the stem length will be long enough. Thank you for the tip! 🌸
Third recommendation for a garden marker! I bought a pack of 2 Staedtler on amazon and wrote on plastic and even flat round river rocks to label my fruit trees.
Awesome! I have thought of rocks as well. I have the garden markers in my cart & I am going to try them again. Thank you for the recommendation! 🌸😊🌸
Do you have a favorite place where you order your seeds from?
Some of my favorite places to order seeds from is Baker Creek, Redemption, Botanical Interest, & Johnny’s. 🌸
Some of my favorite places to order seeds from is Baker Creek, Redemption, Botanical Interests, & Johnny’s. 🌸
2nd the garden marker brand for writing - I use a paint stirrer stick so its a bit bigger with the marker and they hold up, the plastic markers just break off and are too small
Thank you for the idea! I can see paint sticks holding up well & I will try the garden markers. Plastic markers haven’t worked well for me either. 😊
You can use a garden marker and it won't fade.
I will have to try a garden marker again. I had one years ago, but it dried out in our greenhouse when I accidentally left it there, so I didn’t have a chance to use it that much. I will have to give them another try.😊
I go to a very, very small market and I always sell more minis than mixed bouquets! 😅
😊 There is something so cute about them! Everyone just loves them! I sell more mini bouquets as well!
Those little bouquets are so cute, and I like how you don't have to use a rubber band to hold them together.
Thank you! They are fun to make & it’s nice not needing to use rubber bands. 🌸😊🌸
Violets believe they are ground cover in my VA yard. I was pulling them out of my flower beds until I found out they are host plants for fritillaries. I’m fine with violets taking over the grass. Have at it. I still want to have some room for other plants in the beds!
I know what you are talking about. The violets love the shaded areas around our house & are everywhere. I checked & two types of fritillary caterpillars use violets as their host plant in Tn. I will have to keep an eye out for them! 🌸
Just bought property and I'm am learning about all different types of flowers. Besides caterpillar snacks, what are the benefits of milkweed?
Congratulations on the new property! 😊Besides providing food for monarch & tussock caterpillars, milkweed flowers are a great nectar source for pollinators. Milkweed also supports beneficial insects, which will help keep insect pests in check.
This tea sounds wonderful! It looks beautiful also. I dont have my own Roses but when I can get some organically grown ones I will make this. I think it would be really nice to have a few friends over for tea and serve lattes. I drink mostly water, with occasional herbal tea and caffeinated tea. Thanks for the recipe!
Thank you! 🌸😊🌸 Having friends over for lattes does sound fun!
I love Buplerum too and didn’t have enough this season. Thanks for video.
Never enough! 😊 Thank you! 🌸
❤❤ very nice
Thank you! ♥️
Bạn chia sẻ rất hữu ích ,cảm ơn bạn đã chia sẻ kinh nghiệm với mọi người .
Thank you so much! I am glad you liked this video. 😊🌸😊
Thank you for the video. You have beautiful flowers in your garden! I am living in a rental at the moment and unable to grow flowers or vegetables, so it is so nice to see what others are growing. Beautiful bouquets also!
Thank you so much! 😊 I am glad you liked the video & I think it’s nice and interesting to see what others are growing also. 🌸
* Oops! I should have said the little white flower is Sweet Alyssum not Heliotrope. 😊
Just found your channel and pretty much agree with all. My easy grow/ plant more is delphinium and my pain in the butt but still planting is Iceland poppies
Welcome to the channel! Delphinium are so beautiful- it’s great that they are easy for you! I agree about Iceland poppies. 🌸😊🌸
Are those all pro-cuts (pollenless)?
I grow all pollenless varieties. Procut gold is shown for sure. There might be a few self seeded types as well. 🌻
LOVE verbena, but they contantly drop their flowers. New tiny flowers keep on blooming in the vase, so it looks great... but I can't stand the mess it makes.
Thank you for the information on how they bloom, I did notice some tiny flowers falling from the first cut I made. I will keep this in mind while experimenting with them this year. I love the pretty purple color of those flowers! ☀️
would love to see a monthly tour!
That is a new goal for my channel. I am hoping to start the first week of each month. 🌸
hi!! How did you overwinter the dahlias, did you cover them with anything or protect them? also, is your climate wet, do you get a wet winter? thank you!
Hello! I cover my dahlias with row covers & mulch with leaves. Our winters are a little wet, but not too bad. 😊
You are my absolute favorite channel <3
Thank you so much! 😊 I am so glad & thank you for watching! 🌸🌱🌸
Awesome! thanks for this, very good tips <3
So glad it was helpful! 😊
Hi! can you please do a video on how to grow dara? I have not been successful yet for some reason, would love to see more videos of it
That would be a good video. 😊 Make sure to start indoors in mid-summer and have them in the ground 6 weeks before first fall frost or you can try direct sowing as well. 🌱
im so glad i found you, same zone 7b! thank you for this video, looking forward to growing with you! <3
It’s so nice to find someone in the same growing zone! Happy growing! ☀️🌸☀️
Thanks for this video from Chattanooga Tennessee ✌️🦋🦋🦋
You’re welcome fellow Tennessean 😊🌸 🦋
Hello great video. Fellow Tennesseean here. Just wanted to point out that native thistles are heavily relied upon by bees and butterflies. The native species are less prickly and quite beautiful. Painted lady butterflies love to lay their eggs on them.
Hello fellow Tennessean! That is good information to know. We definitely have some thistles, I will keep an eye out for their eggs this year and will read more about the Painted Lady. 😊
I love the light ethereal quality to your bouquets!
Thank you! 😊
Hi, your flowers are beautiful! Your voice is so soothing, but difficult to hear in the video. Is it possible you could get a microphone? Thank you!
Thank you! I recently purchased a microphone but forget that I have it sometimes. I will try & remember for the next video! 😊
I planted 1 yarrow plant from garden center last year and it didn’t spread. It did come back this year. Woo hoo. What is your suggestions for me to get it to spread this year? Thanks for any help.
It probably just needs more time. Spreading some nice organic compost around the base of the plant & mulching would help give it a little boost & help retain moisture and keep weeds in check. Happy growing! 😊🌱☀️
I love Jewel of Opar too!
Such an interesting and pretty plant! ☀️🌱😊
I am growing sweet peas for the first time this year and I’ve learned patience is key. I soaked my seeds for around 36 hours, then placed them directly into the soil in a prepared bed. I watched and waited and finally, when the temp and water levels were just right, they started emerging. I really think my fairy magic had a small hand in this because nothing happened until spruced up her fairy house just a little, and then wham! They started waking up. 😂❤
Sweet peas do need a few extra steps to grow & patience is definitely key, but they are worth the extra effort. 😊 I find that most of the time the seeds know just the right time to germinate. A little sprucing up never hurts! 🌱❤️☀️
Do your cats bother the chickens? we have new ones that are now ready to be outside but worried about our cats.
Luckily our cats do not bother our chickens. They usually just lay around and watch the chickens scratch around or ignore them. I think carefully and slowly introducing the cats to the chickens work best. I would especially be careful with any small bantams. 😊
FINALLY! Something to do with all those TP rolls!! I love this and adding it to my notebook!
Yes, it was a fun experiment and I am glad it worked! 🌱
Hello, thanks for all your videos! I am new to planting flowers and am enjoying learning. I also appreciate you looking into how materials will break down in the soil. I try to live an organic and sustainable lifestyle and its important to me to not put microplastics into the soil. Thanks again!
I also enjoy learning and in the gardening world there is so much to learn. 🌱 I have been growing organically for 10 plus years now and I love to see the resulting plant and animal diversity. This is my second year growing flowers & I am starting to focus on regenerative gardening and on reducing plastic use. ☀️
Do you direct sow most of these?
I like to direct sow whenever possible. I definitely direct sow the sunflowers and zinnias. I will start the chocolate lace flower and snapdragons indoors every time. The other varieties it just depends, if it’s early in the year I usually start indoors. 🌸
That’s a great idea This is the first year I am planting sweet peas in the garden New friend here
Hello friend! Thank you & good luck with your sweet peas. 🌱☀️
where do you source your seeds?
I like to source my seeds from several different seed companies some of my favorites are Rare Seeds, Select Seeds, Redemption Seeds, Fruition Seeds, and Botanical Interests. All have a nice selection of flowers, herbs, and vegetables. 😊
