Teignbridge District Council Meeting 30th July Point of Order
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.2 месяца назад
Teignbridge District Council Full Council on 30th July spiraled into chaos after the public questions, on the changing facilities at Broadmeadow Sports Centre, were badly mismanaged. The council has to operate within the law and there were some very worrying failings on Human Rights Act, Equality Act and how the chair, for the second meeting running, dealt with a neuro diverse councillor. Here ...

BBC Spotlight reporting Devon County Council's massive U-turn on parking charges in town centres. This was done because DCC says it 'listened' to the traders of Braunton, Crediton, Dartmouth, Honiton, Okehampton, Salcombe, Sidmouth and Tavistock who said removing the ease of 'pop and shop' would damage their businesses. DCC's motivation was to 'change behaviour and get people out of their cars'...

    The scheme is coming along nicely. Already there are benefits to pedestrians walking in safety and with plenty of space. I live very near to the scheme, and over the years have seen consistent anti social driving particularly speeding, people sitting in their vehicles with the engine idling while looking at their phones for long periods and resultant pollution. Should have happened years ago.

    This Council doesn't give a toss what locals think, They are devastating Newton Abbot building thousands of homes which will only go to those coming into this Town when there will be no shops, no jobs and then they will try to implement the 15 minute no go areas. They are cutting thousands of trees down which is so odd because we have to get Council permission to cut a branch in our own gardens!! We still have no infrastructure to build all these homes which will turn getting in and out of this town into a gridlock and all for money. But then Stupid is as stupid does!

    Hello....of course the traders are worried....and so are the shoppers....they live in the real world! Get a life councillors and be well ashamed for entertaining such a plan. You are messing with a shopping centre that works brilliantly. Of course there are cars, they bring the people and plenty of them from remote villages all around....where they rely on cars as their only way into town. Do not penalise them and young busy people who need no fuss shopping. Meaningful consultation and listening to the responses is a key responsibility of any serious councillor. God Save Our Queen Street!

  • @RichardSime-zi8ei

    Of course the traders are worried...they live in the real world! The lack of consultation with those most affected is shameful. Councils should work for the people to make positive not negative changes. Crazy to fix what is not broken. My wife and I have shopped here for 50 years and we love the experience. It is a bustling, thriving pop and shop centre and to threaten that is criminal. It is delusional to assume the public support such a crass scheme...why not ask them properly? And listen to what they say. People leading busy lives need to be able to shop without fuss. Take a taxi did someone say?.....unbelievable! May God Save Queen Street!

    its deosnt work, the council will milk and put rates up continually and do nothing for the residents. The residents will then have to fork out in the area they pay tax for and live an absolute premium. If the council got away with setting up high street then next they would widen it to outside your front door!

    You need to see the bigger picture of nationwide decline of small towns, town centres in general, which is driven by the big supermarkets, online shopping and the willingness of people to go with all that. Allowing a few people to badly reverse park isn't going to cut it, Specifically with Newton Abbot The REAL PROBLEM IS THE MARKET AREA. Get that right and you might save this town but carry on like the council are and it will be another corrupt inept failure.

    It’s all about discouraging people from private vehicle ownership. There is no care or consideration to people or businesses when councils get their incentives (funding) from the central government to do these ludicrous anti-car / anti-people schemes. The councils and government are in place to work for us and they need to be reminded of that from time to time.

    This idea is madness. Did Teignbridge planners forget that many people who visit Queen St in cars, drive in from villages? Sometimes I don't want to do the car-park and walk around thing, I want to park for an hour or half an hour, pop into the bank and a shop or two and off. Sometimes I don't have the free time for anything else. I can do this in Totnes on the high street, why not Newton Abbot in Queen Street? I've never seen a Council work so hard over the years at killing a town.

    • @richarddaws4714
      @richarddaws4714 8 месяцев назад

      As it happens, I lived in Totnes too and always assumed I couldn't park on the high street, because of the no access signs. TDC will say that you can still access Queen Street to shop, but forgoetting to mention they will have removed about 80% of the parking!

    Present situation not especially great either! - everyone crammed on the pavements - groups of people chatting and blocking the way - mobility scooters - having to dodge umbrellas when it's raining - crossing to shop through parked cars, all resolved by pedestrianisation -

    • @wolboroughhills515
      @wolboroughhills515 8 месяцев назад

      How do you square that with the fact all the traders are saying the current plan will put them out of business? Based on the loss of takings they had when the street was closed for a few days. £1000 loss of takings and £700 in another small shop. In one day!! Perhaps if the council had actually consulted, rather than pretending to consult to proceed with their plan, they would have evolved something with wide support. Extend the pavements and impove the street with seating and trees after Albany Street and reduce the speed limit to 20mph. That would satisfy your points in making it a more safe and pedestrian friendly street, whilst keeping access therefore not closing the businesses!

      there are genuine issues of people loitering on pavements and effectively blocking them whilst they chat idly and ignore people trying to pass them. When will TDC and DCC actually consult properly and above all listen. There is too much going on behind closed doors with hidden agendas that need to be exposed. Just read the Mid Devon Advertiser today. A disgrace, 450 houses and probably only the start. More countryside lost, more food production lost, more concrete, more carbon emissions, more light pollution, more pressure on land fills, our roads and reservoirs. I suppose the architecture will be of the same shockingly shit quality as has been built already around newton by Taylor Wimpy, Linden and Bovis. All the virtue signallers and politicians banging on about climate change whilst the biggest irreversible environmental destruction is being carried out by house builders pretty much unchallenged. Plus they are directly contributing to our climate emissions. Bollox.
