Hello hello! Here is where I tell you whacky tales about writing with ADHD. Yup, it's that simple. You'll find out pretty soon that I try to stay consistent (but often fail), start conversations about writing and its complications, and advocate for neurodiversity in creative fields. Cheers, y'all!
ADHDwriter | S1E4 | How I'm Using Intrusive Thoughts To Help My Writing
Intrusive thoughts are one of the diagnostic criteria for diagnosing ADHD. These thoughts are highly prevalent in the adult population of individuals with the disorder, with adults reporting them at a much higher rate than children. Sometimes, if you play your cards right, they can be a double edged sword that you can fall on the right side of.

Quit reading my mind hahaha. I've had every single one of those intrusive thoughts.
Me
Dude you are awesome and your videos are perfect. Please keep making them! Most of the support I get for ADHD is online and being able to actually relate to others gives me hope and inspiration! One Love 🙏🏼🤙🏼✌🏼
Omg get out of my brain. Get those tags away from me, and turtleneck are murder.
ooh I really like this, totally relate to the whole intrusive thoughts brain mess, I'd say mine are about 50/50 self criticism and random ideas/ connections, thoughts, distractions which often lead to cool creative ideas! 🙃 double bluffing your own brain is a mood! i do a similar thing with procrastination by having multiple projects, one which i have to do, and one which is procrastination project, sometimes I set deadlines on the one I don't need to do just so i procrastinate by working on the other one which actually needs to be don, idk how it works when I know exactly what i'm doing but it somehow does😂 also totally relate to the inspiration thingo, i guess it could be considered narcissistic but i don't think it is, i think its genuinely a result of having so much negative feedback our whole lives and so much "why are you doing things like that" sort of criticism, which ADHDers get statistically a lot more of than neurotypicals, that when we get positive affirmations and admiration it is a massive booster, i wouldn't say thats a bad thing at all, it helps even out the balance in our brains and helps us to reprogram our own internal critics which is a great thing for our own mental health! 🥳
Double bluffing!! That was the term I was trying to think of! Brains are weird. Even when they know what they're doing, if it's effective enough, it almost doesn't care that it's bluffing itself 🤣 and I think you're right on the last bit, too. I think it'd be unhealthy if our brain chemicals were at normal levels but we wanted to make other people feel bad about our progress. It's not that at all! At least for me, it's pushing myself rather than others. Although, I don't think the other option would be a normal brain at that point, either 🤔
my thoughts while watching the notebooks section, "yeah seems accurate, i have so many that i usually have at least 3 within reach at all times too" 😂
"at least 3 within reach" is what I call the rule of thirds 😂😂😂
I did not expect to be called out to this degree LMAO!!! 😂i mean i fully expected to be called out, but this is awfully specifically calling me out while simultaneously being the most realistic and useful advice for managing it than anything else i've ever seen where people just say "just tidy up straight away, just put the stuff away, just be neat!" and i'm like THAT DOESN'T WORK!!! 🤣
🤣🤣I'm glad it can help!! It's been very useful for me to be kind to myself about my functional clutter. Also, imy wifey!!!
The Doom Boxes! I always call my long winded paragraphs. And i have googles (doom)doc full of random snippett for who knows when
Hahaha, yes!!
I understand you. I'm also like that. Let's go ahead, learning and learning, doing our best... and writing 😁 Ah! I’m from Brazil.
I agree! Hi to Brazil.
Fellow writer here. Diagnosed at 37. Rough road before I was diagnosed. You're blessed to be diagnosed at your age. Keep your chin up. ADHD isn't a curse; there are many upsides. You're a Ferrari engine with bike breaks. Learn to strengthen your breaks, and you'll be fine. Re: waiting mode...activate the Task Positive Network in your brain by setting a timer and doing something intentional for 5-10 minutes. Maybe write down random character names and two sentences of bio for each. Don't stop during the 5-10 minutes no matter how much you want to. This will quiet your Default Mode Network, which you were stuck in while waiting. People with ADHD like us can get tripped up by time. There's 'now,' and then there's 'not now.' So we tend to get preoccupied when something is in the hazy 'not now.' Enter your TPN.
Hard relate :,)
Right?!
Yes, please!!!
Can’t comment on the live chat bcs apparently you can’t do that on mobile. On way home from friend’s house and hoping I don’t miss the stream!!
I had to cancel tonight's stream!! My new pup just got out of the vet from a major surgery and she's not doing her best. Sorry, friendo!!
@@ADHDwriter Oh no! I'm so sorry, I didn't know <3 I hope she's doing alright!
@@iiiiitsmagreta1240 oh, it's ok! She's well and is recovering. I couldn't find a way to notify everyone so I deleted the stream and now I'm trying to figure out how to tell everyone who planned on stopping by. Still haven't figured it out yet!

Sounds cool~ Looking forward to the new vids!
Yay!! Looking forward to seeing what you make when you're back!
Thanks, wifey!!! I've missed being around everyone here! I can't wait to get on a regular posting schedule. I'd love to do a collab on an episode!

I am SO GLAD to see you again, and so looking forward to whatever you've got next :D (in your own time ofc, as spoons allow) Oh, btw - thought I should mention for future reference, I'm going by Aether Westby now, pronouns she/her, sky/sky's, and they/them. I've not yet updated my username to reflect that, but I wanted to make sure you were aware :) I can't wait for Season 1!!
Thank you for letting me know, Aether! I definitely want to make sure to address you properly. I'm so glad you're still here! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on upcoming things!

yay! so thrilled to have you back!
Thank youuuu! 💛💛💛 I'm so glad to be back. Missed you!!!
Adhd is a superpower for writters.
is it?
@@lonlinessman6621 Ya from personal experience
Please help me with this: I am 15 and called a neuro doctor so I could take an ADHD test, but they send me to a phonoaudiologist and she said that I don't have ADHD because I write really well, but I don't think I write well, I think I write good sentences, but when it comes to the core of writing itself, organizing thoughts, punctuation, and well-constructed narrative I struggle... a lot. I always seem to stall or overload the paragraph with too much stuff to the point that you don't know what I was talking about at first. I tried writing a small romance book centered around two girls and halfway through it, nothing was about these girls anymore but about a Brazilian drug cartel! Whenever I write a paragraph I need to re-write it multiple times, not mentioning without taking distraction and lack of attention on the boring parts. It's also a struggle to finish anything, or not delete it because I can do better, but I can never do better. Even with this comment, I'm sending it with the support of Grammarly who corrected a bunch of details and I deleted so much stuff that had nothing to do with the main topic. I can never be consistent with one topic, and with a short story, she said I don't have ADHD, even tho she didn't take into consideration my main symptoms.
I’m a late arriver 2021! Of course, ADHD. I’ve been searching for any/everything for decades to finish a memoir manuscript - one of my possible pub houses said ‘we’d’ lol get a ‘Pulitzer’ with it, though, had I made it through ‘middle school.’ As she knew I had a baby a 17. My answer: no. For even forty yrs ago - my teachers pointed to when I didn’t cheat o didn’t seem to be learning, retaining anything. Yet, creativity and solutions oriented we’re off the charts… then my son was born and diagnosed at four months ADHD ( brain scan) ?!?! So he’s off in his life - almost didn’t survive that! And I’m left with my decades long agonizing procrastination/ pure frustration- doing my manuscript rewrite - I WANT THAT PULITZER!!! loling …. So, I’m not only a late arrival here, I’m a late bloomer, lordy-willin, and I give WAY TOO much information, not unlike a savant does calculations… Thx for having me - if anyone has had the time or interest to even read this! Cheers all!
This was my entire life. This bring tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing 🙏
School has been a train wreck my entire life, barely scraping by and ashamed. Four years after undergrad I finally received my diagnosis and now I’m in Graduate School. I still have a lot learn in order to overcome my limitations. Especially reading/writing…… But I look forward to learning from you, and you got this 💪
I feel attacked 🤣
I got diagnosed just over a year ago, and started medication a couple months ago. I'm currently trying to finish my first year of college (entirely online aaaa) Everything is due right now and I have been trying throughout the whole year to be better and more on top of things. The dose I started four days ago seems to really be working for me (fingers crossed it stays - though who knows how much it is due to last minute panic - though due to things being online that hasn't been kicking in 🤷♂️). But even so, desperately scrambling to get my work done at the last minute is worsened because I'm lacking a lot of the learning from not having processed the classes properly or at all. Even so, writing the last few days has felt like I was closer than ever to getting something done, if I just had a little more time. I don't want it to be because of the medication but it seems like it is. (I'm also sleeping well, good food, exercise etc.) It's really good to see someone else document the feelings on and off so I don't feel like I'm going crazy for having them myself. And it's honestly inspiring hearing you got through your degree. Definitely gonna watch this channel a lot from now on 😋
I just started writing a memoir and I'm finding it really hard to stay focused. I found a program that really helps with the way our brains work its called Scrivner and it has helped so much. now it's just getting the motivation to write comes in sporadic waves at times it nice to see their's someone trying to help aspiring authors with ADHD and hopefully some motivation skills tips in the future. Appreciate you!
Lovely intro!!! I was hoping to find a adhd writer, it makes me feel lot better. Love you. Thanks for doing this. And All the best!!!
Hey, Alice! So glad this reached you, then! Thanks for leaving this for me, I always beam when I get comments like yours. I'm trying to get my ducks in a row so I can post more, so I hope I can make more videos that you can relate to!
Omg... I can't... Too relatable 👀
XD
Omg this was great! I loved your little studders and blips. It was like looking in the mirror! I love writing and have wanted to write a book series since I was 16 (I am now 34!) and still haven't completed a paragraph. I got pretty far once in a creative writing class after uni but when that ended I got distracted. Recently I started changing my process of writing which includes getting back into sketching and I LOVE to read! Anyway I just posted my first ADHD video but my second one is taking a while because... Well I keep getting distracted. I edited a lot of my studders and ummms out because I find them mortifying (got bullied at school for my speech) but after watching how much fun you had with yours and how you embrace them Im gonna try to embrace mine. Anyway basically what I'm saying is... Subscribed. Looking forward to future videos!
Aww, thank you! That means a lot to me. I know how the video thing can go... I procrastinate filming (for months at a time) but I hope I can post more relatable content! I'll check out your videos, too.
@@ADHDwriter thank you so much. Just a warning... I swear a lot 👀
Its alright! The fireplace give it ASTHETIC! And, Dont fell bad about forgetting what you were writing!! You are a good, great and kind person no matter what!!
Hahaha, thank you, Brandon!!
That fireplace is awesome
Thank you! I wish I could claim it but it's not mine XD
all. the. time.
😂😂😂😂
Okay but this is painfully accurate 😆
😂😂😂
Haha relatable😂 ..luckily the good ideas have a way of finding their way back to us
XD occasionally!
Happens more than I'd like to admit...
I relate so much to this.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one!! XD
I got one of those exercise ball chairs things just so I can bounce up and down at my desk without squeaking anything lmao.
That's a great idea 😆
@@ADHDwriter Once you can find your center of gravity it's great...I fell a lot finding it first though lol
As soon as I got to "Tabs", I was like... "this is going to be one big 'ole call-out, isn't it?"
😂 pretty much!!!
WELP! this is a whole damn mood!! the amount of times I'm like "I swear I wrote notes on this already where TF are they!?!" and then have to search through anything from 3 to 10 different notebooks! also omg I do that foot jiggle thing too!!! I didn't realise other people do that!
Ugh, at least we're not alone!!
I felt this. Especially the notebook one, and I don't think I have ever stay still at my desk.
Oh my gosh, the NOTEBOOKS DRIVE ME CRAZY. And me neither. I can't stay in one work zone for long XD
This is a very nice vidio
I know this is an old video but I was re-watching it and I had the odd realization that I write better without meds because the whole reason that I can do my hour-long sprints is because I *don't* notice the time lmao
how did i miss your newbie tag when you posted it?! lol. either way - love your channel & having you in this community!
Ayyy, it ain't no thang! Thanks for watching at any time. And I'm glad to have your backing! Love your channel, too!
Watching this on replay. I have chronic depression and PTSD (both are better now that I'm on medication and have been in therapy for a while) so I guess I'm also neurodivergent. I TOTALLY agree with you about the "find the most creative time" advice. I have no idea. I just feel better at certain times on different days. I also sometimes realize a whole day has gone by and I've done nothing. Normally, it's a sign of my depression. I've sometimes wondered if I've had ADHD, but I've never had that confirmed. It's interesting to know that being a woman makes it harder to identify. A neurodivergent discord would ROCK
Wow, Zara, thanks for sharing!! If you're ever interested, I would love to make a video or do a live with you talking about as much as you're comfortable speaking on in your neurodivergent experience. I'm glad that you got something new out of the replay!!
ADHDwriter I’d definitely be interested! And I just want to say again what a great job you did.
since when did you have a YT channel
First of all, WELCOME TO BOSTON!!!!!! I hope you enjoy it. Also, I know a lot went down on AuthorTube, it can be overwhelming, but I think people separating AuthorTube and CreatorTube, or merging them together is great. I hope all works well for you!
Thank you, Sid!! And I totally agree with you about authortube vs. creatortube; it's just not the move for me currently. I think it's awesome to grow and evolve! It's just that I just got here and all I want to talk about is writing and publishing - it's my passion!
Spooky poems?
Maybe try a timed writing where you don’t think just write what’s on your mind for 5 mins
