Through this study, we understand how the brain links treatment costs to results and how the credibility of the recommending person or institution can impact outcomes. Discover the surprising truth about expensive pills, the power of belief in pain relief, and the intriguing science behind the placebo effect. Learn why it's crucial to consider these factors whe...

41 yo, 32 weeks pregnant. Pain began after a minor ankle injury that progressed to a grade 2 high ankle sprain. I suspected I was using the cane wrong and ended up in a wheelchair at the onset of the hip pain. After 2 weeks of ankle and hip pain, I could not bear any weight. Doctors refused xray and MRI. I had to demand both after speaking with my MFM. Once MRI results were reviewed by Ortho team, I was admitted into the hospital for possible surgery to stabilize the femoral head. They suspected a fracture but ultimately determined the bone to be too soft for a rod and screws to help. Currently on bed rest until ankle and hip pain resolves. Aqua therapy was just ordered. Pain is intense so home modifications have also been made. I have had osteopenia for over 10 years.

I’m a 33 year old non-pregnant female. It started with pain in my right hip joint on walking. No h/o trauma. Initially the pain was bearable, and I could walk with a limp. Later it became unbearable and I went for an x-ray as advised by my orthopedist friend (I’m a community health physician). However the radiograph was normal and he advised me NSAIDs and muscle relaxants as trial. Medication did reduce pain but it was always there on walking for another week. On examination I had sharp pain in extreme of internal and external rotation, but range of motion was normal, so I was advised to get an MRI of the hip. On MRI the radiologist opined as TOH with sub-chondral fractures. All my blood investigations were within normal range (serum. Ca, P, PTH, Vit. D etc). BMD scan showed osteopenia in the right hip and left radius (I’ve had tenderness in my left wrist since last 2-3 years) but normal density everwhere else. Right now I’m on best rest, calcium & vitamin d supplements and NSAIDs. Can Transient osteoporosis also occur in wrist, since my BMD scan showed osteopenia in the left wrist and I’ve been having pain in extreme of dorsiflexion of left wrist???

If the fractured bone is painful because it has not fully healed, or if it causes discomfort because it is too close to the joint, different treatment methods can be considered. This may include removal of the implant. It can also be removed for cosmetic purposes, but sometimes if there are such problems due to the damage caused by the trauma itself to the shoulder, implant removal surgery will not work.

The success of surgical procedures naturally depends on the experience of the physician and the method used during the operation. If the surgery was performed gently and without damaging any tissue, it usually takes up to three months for the bones to fuse and regain their strength. However, in a scenario where everything goes wrong, the process will be much longer.

I've been told that eventually this (For the lack of a better wording.) artificial joint will fail. Is there any truth to that? What you describe sounds more like an ankle arthroplasty than a plate. Unfortunately, arthroplasty of the ankle using our experience with knee and hip arthroplasty does not give as long term results as knee and hip arthroplasty. It is impossible to know the duration. Although there may be a possibility of wear within five to ten years depending on the activity level of the patient, the process may take 20 years or more depending on the success of the procedure, the activity level of the patient and the quality of the implant used.

After a month his leg was twisted while walking and again the same patella was fractured. Underwent another surgery and two screws from the plate were removed and anchor sutures were fixed.. Your doctor is absolutely right. Anything can happen after ten years. In one of our patients, we had to cut it in half and leave it in place because it did not come out more after the nail in the canal was halfway out. Moreover, the operation, which we planned for 15 minutes, took 4 hours. If there is a problematic situation, let's make a profit and loss calculation, you can still try to remove it, but all the facts in the video apply to you

What age did the children come under, that the implant need to be removed, Sir please reply to this question.

It would not be very accurate to say a specific age because each child's growth is completed at different ages. In fractures before the completion of growth, the implants should be removed. In general, it is necessary to remove before the age of 14 for boys and 12 for girls.

I had all the screws and plate removed from my ankle…wow, what a difference! No more pain or bone burn. Its like walking on air. I am finally walking with no limp and was fully weight bearing immediately, no crutches needed! There is hardly any bruising or swelling and l can truthfully say l havent taken a single pain killer since the recovery room! So glad l had the metal work removed…best decision l made! Two weeks on and with the stitches removed today, l am back walking my dogs, obviously only short walks on flat paths but l am not limping and in no pain…nobody can believe l have even had surgery!

Amazing and very insightful video. I have an internal fixation carried out on my right elbow ulna as I had a fracture of the olecranon process of the ulna 7 years ago, currently feel a discomfort around the region which is likely caused by either a pin, wire or plate which is pinching my skin from the inside. Also there is a noticeable bulge on the elbow, do you suggest to remove the implant after 7 years?

Thank you very much for your interest. Implants used in fractures around the joint and especially in the elbow can cause discomfort when putting the elbow on the table. It is often necessary to remove the implants in this area. Seven years is a long time. Removing the wires does not cause any problems, but the plate and screws used may cause problems. It is useful to discuss this issue in detail with your doctor. Maybe if the plate and screws are in a position that will not cause much discomfort, only the wires can be removed. Have healthy days.

@@SimplifiedOrthopedics appreciate your swift response Doctor. Currently in the process of getting it checked by a professional. Had no issues carrying the implant until recently that I noticed a bruise on the tip of my elbow where the internal material pinches the skin and felt it might be time to recheck the fixation to determine how to reduce the discomfort. Thanks again for your candid professional advice.
