THE PHINTAGE COLLECTOR
Швейцария
Добавлен 4 дек 2021
It's obsolete technology nobody uses today, but I bring it back to life.
I'm fixing and collecting vintage tech and exploring into historic computing.
For me it all started in the early 2000s, when I began collecting Digital, Sun and SGI Unix Workstations.
Eventually, due to time and space constraints, I got rid of almost everything, only to start collecting again a few years ago, essentially to become THE PHINTAGE COLLECTOR.
Ok, what's the leetspeak name all about?
20 years ago I acquired the PHUNSITES domain to play around for fun. As FUNSITES was taken, so I spelled it with an PH, it's that simple. Eventually, with additional webpages being added, I started reflecting the PH everywhere like a pest and well, it stayed like that.
Hence, I'm THE PHINTAGE COLLECTOR. Funnily enough, the P+C capitals also perfectly reflect to the Personal Computers of any sorts it all revolves around.
Welcome to TPC, vintage and retro computing endeavors proudly brought to you from Switzerland!

Here's TPC's video Advent Calendar 2024, revealing door No. 16 for December 16th: German magazine "PC Praxis" published a pseudo-scientific article in April 2000, claiming that by means of DOS tool called LIRPA (April in reverse), you could transform a CD-ROM drive into a CD-Recorder. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Think entering BIOS on a vintage Compaq is tricky? Try triggering the DFU mode on a 2021 MacBook Pro. There's an absurdly specific time window of holding and releasing keys. Fortunately that's necessary much less often than the BIOS was in the 90s.
A wizard of DOS have the power to craft some new magic spells for the command prompt.
I began with the most powerfull DOS command to learn x86 assembly with Debug on 80286 CPU try and error. I saved first routines without a file extension not knowing that these files can use the "com" file extension.😂
Really cool. I am building a modern retro system and it will have XP as well as 7 on it. Thanks for pointing out this tool.
No A, B, C or D. Just plain Enterprise.
Right, that‘s number three. There‘s more! ^^
I still have mine! 1st edition too. The swollen battery was an issue I had for a while. Eventually, it broke the battery door and I had to order a 3D printed on from a company (not unlike what PCBway can do!) Thankfully, the CAD files for the case were/are still available online, and I bought a new battery from the German store. It still works today, and I'd still be using it for creative writing, unfortunately the hinge broke after all these years so I might need to order another 3D printed replacement, but it was a complicated assembly and the demo videos were pre HD, so I'm scared I might damage it more.
@@TheRealAlpha2 hope you can save it!
@@THEPHINTAGECOLLECTOR One day I'll get up the courage to try!
4:12 When COMMAND loads the BIOS and sets the memory and *even the system status is OK* you know it isn't MS-DOS! 😉Murphy, is it OS/2? 🤔 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone 🎄🎉🎆
@@ruben_balea that‘s another one, indeed.: RoboCop But there‘s more ^^
You Sir, are hilarious. That was very enjoyable and it brought back many memories. Ah, the good and bad old days with DOS. Talking about archaic OSses, being a dinosaur myself I prefer CP/M over MS-DOS. By the way, did I spot there are lovely serial terminal? A perhaps a PDP, even? Not sure - but I did see a serial terminal 🙂 A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
Indeed, there's some DEC terminals! The DEC VT180 featured brieftly here: ruclips.net/video/8YwekFqma6Q/видео.html Plus there's a VT220 and a VT320. I'll feature them soon. The PDP you're referring to is a small-scale replica, as featured here: ruclips.net/video/U8iv5pigHaA/видео.html And in case you didn't see them all, there's a quiet a few CP/M related videos on my channel: ruclips.net/video/gZ9GvC6k-ko/видео.html Happy Holidays!
I remember when CDROMs were rather new fangled modern technology! First one I had was only compatible with the sound card!
One strange behaviour of the setup software that need to be phisically on a floppy is that if you copy each disk in a folder named disk1, disk2, disk3....disk10...etc, the install program will install the software just ok. I accidentally discovered that when I extracted some floppy images and ran the install from the directory disk1.
Device=himem.sys
It's going to be sad going back to once a week on this channel. Merry Christmas.
@@SirKenchalot There will be advent 2025 ;)

"In a world, where a single mistake can decide between order and chaos ..." The valiant SuperDOSman!!!! 11!1!
Oh man, this is me just the other day trying to get an old Unix distro. My dos 6.22 setup is flawless at the moment… BESIDES THIS DOPEY GENIUS MOUSE!!! Anyway, amazing series, every video was a blast and I got a new windows shell out of it!
Its funny, but I remember all of this. Its more fun when you have to start out by running Fdisk.exe to partition and then format your hard drive. Then you install from A: to C:, not the other way around.
@@Robert08010 True! The floppy sequ nce though was more a reminescence to the typical situation of getting to a broken machine, asiing „donyou have a boot floppy“? Answer was typically „no“, or awkward silence. Such as goes for „do you have a backup?“ ^^
My wife and I wish you also a merry Christmas! Enjoy the days! :)
Damn, fighting with DOS system configs and memory management brings back memories. And a bit of PTSD... Once I figured out how memmaker worked, I was able to squeeze out more KB than it could. LOL
Been there, done that, dreamed of tossing the machine out the window. :)
TBH, I once really tossed something out the window out of frustration. Not a computer, but a printer, that drove me really nuts.
Lolol hilarious! I could totally feel the frustration.
Heyyyy! I'm an ancient warrior from the prehistoric age in which DOS ruled the earth. This is basically the way I ended up learning how DOS functions, so I say Merry Christmas to you and yours!
The parts other techtubers leave out of their videos.
Happy holidays! I watched every one of these while feeding my 3 month old every night!
Merry Christmas, i have a dejavu from DOS times XD
merry Christmas Gianpaolo! and happy new year! cheers from Argentina
Phintage vs a Compaq Presario CDS524: Presario won at points! A "knock out" at 4:50 by Phintage, but AFTER the bell ( 4:40 ) has NOT not to be considerated.
I don’t miss dos… I miss old dos games! Cheers!
@@GlockamoleG17Luckily, those can still be pulled from the drawer. And they work surprisingly well even today, still bringing lots of fun.

Merry. Christmas and Happy New Year! Best wishes to you and your family as well!
Almost every 'expansion cards' I had when I was kid were 3rd party or clones, and their device driver parameters were not documented.... My AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS were so cryptic, I couldn't remember if I lost it....
And to think some of us actually **miss** those days! We are truly masochists 😄 Merry Christmas!
TBH, it wasn't really that bad, although managing the lowram was a significant pain.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade This is true. For the most part, as long as you knew what you were doing (and most people who were using computers at the time did), it was both pretty easy to keep things running smoothly **and** easy to fix things when they failed.
May Father Christmas bring you everything you hope for.
