Hello, I had a question about a photo in this particular video. at 17:37 we have a photo captioned as a SP pusher train. That would be a photo of the little #4 of the Manitou and Pikes Peak cog railway in Colorado. However this would be the first photo I believe I've ever seen of the 1st #4, are you aware if this collection had any more photos of this equipment? I've been trying to track down photos of that locomotive for some time.
Very nice, I was remembering my Navy training,
My grandfather was the liason for the navy .. for Balboa navy hospital. Also. Formed the navy repair base. San Diego. Forget who was the C.O. Have to look at grandfather's letter to Nimitz.
This really an amazing piece of footage. I worked as a Dishwasher for several years at Casa AlJones, 860 Garnet. I left there when I graduated from college in 76. I drove that road hundreds of times. Thank you.
I really enjoyed this video. I am the great granddaughter of John Davidson who designed Mission Cliff Gardens and maintained it. There are some photos here, I have not seen before. Thank you for sharing them.
Great slide show. Is Karen Scanlon related to George Scanlon (industrial arts teacher in San Diego Unified School District in the 1960s)?
Oh Thank You so much. It brought joy to my inner being to watch this.
This is great, are there any photos of the Federal Fire Station 110 that's located right before Rosecrans? Would have been station 12 or NOSC fire department back then.
Coral Bay 😭 💀
Thank you for posting these!
Raised in the 60's and 70's on bikes at the bowling alley Mr. G's , Tugs and Frosty shop. Hauled old TV's home from Tommy's to fix and Loved Sheldon's. Still live on Kendall St. and think It's great. Times change but PB still has it.
At 3:15 Seaside gas-$0.35!
Alot more undeveloped real estate on Clairemont Drive just east of the I-5 and alot more American Cars.
Eric, I call them "Bespoke P/C's" there were many many at the Tijuana borderline!
There are P/C's on this tour that I have not seen before! Give it a like, to please the Algorithm Gods!
Worked on NAB for close to three years 06-09.
Was able to spot a friends house on the return trip to the beach.
Its too fast to really appreciate
So amazing! I bet Darleen worked at Lucy's then! So great to see what's still there!
That was SO GREAT to watch! The majority of this clip was the route I sometimes took to go to Bethany Lutheran school in OB!! I lived just off of Nimitz. Thank you for posting this incredible video!!!
From a 5th Generation San Diegan who grew up on Santa Monica, you made an absolutely AMAZING presentation... I learned so many new facts!!! Thank you!!!
My house was on Del Mar between Catalina & Chatsworth. I think my parents bought it for $6000 in 1947. The house across the street recently sold for around $3 Million.
No horses jumping off deadman’s
All the historical photos are great! Love all San Diego lore. However, one caveat- the soundtract Victory at Sea would be appropriate for WWII photos, but your WWII portion is only the LAST two minutes of the video!
What this does not mention is that she enabled Irving Gill to pursue his progressive "tilt up concrete construction techniques" that allowed for the casting of the renowned arches in concrete that were pre-formed on the ground and then tilted up in sections :"Irving J. Gill, a prominent architect in Southern California. In 1912, which was early in the history of concrete construction, Gill designed and constructed a house in Hollywood where he employed Aiken’s method for tilt-up. This led Gill to purchase the patent rights of the bankrupt Aiken Reinforced Concrete Company to form his own Concrete Building and Investment Company. Without the architectural mindset of Gill, the industry may very well have taken a much slower time to rise to its current dominance. His crowning tilt-up achievement, the La Jolla Women’s club, remains as one of the great early examples of modern concrete and continues to inspire architects employing the method." Here is a link that explains the technique: www.adc-exhibits.museum.ucsb.edu/exhibits/show/gill-exhib-sum/gill-construction
Nice work Eric...! I grew up across the street from the NTC base in SAN.
There appears to be a parallel alleyway opposite the stretch that runs along Catalina. Could that have been a Southbound section of the line? Did the line ever split upon leaving Orchard?
Thanks for watching, I don't think so though. All the maps show the line running along the east side of Catalina. There was a little subdivision on both sides of Catalina, up to both of those alleys, or maybe a lot or two further in each direction, called Catalina Manor. Between Orchard and Narragansett. I don't know if that had anything to do with that west alley, but possibly. I don't think the PLRR line went anywhere else besides as described. Sometimes it ran that loop in the opposite direction, and I think twice a day it ran down Voltaire to the beach and straight back the same way. They called that the direct route or similar. 🚞
I grew up living in the apartments closest to clairemont square they were right there as they still are today God I miss growing up in Clairemont in the 70's and 80's
Yep, still looks pretty much the same
I lived on Apache Ave and was a Chieftain until 1980 😀. Clairemont was a fun place back then.
Is it just me or were there a lot more gas stations along this road back then??
Very Nice! There is also an article in Wikipedia about the start of the Store. Search for "Ocean Beach People's Organic Food Market".
That was a nice drive and very nostalgic. So much open space. 🥰
There was a ton of VW's and only a couple of Datsun 210's
that brings back a lot of memories.
Great video here! Coronado Streetcar service ended in 1947.
At 12:18. I wonder what that light is in the top middle of the pic?
1972 LTD , so later than’70
The Frontier Drive in Theatre marquee has "Class of '44" as its main feature. So this was shot in or soon after April 1973. The month and year that film was released.
Wow Mission Hills and Hillcrest in 1970…. Only a few buildings still here in 2022. Strange to see it without any of the hospitals. Love the billboard advertising new homes in Mira Mesa!
Less than 10 years later the intersection at 0:45 seconds at the Jackinthe Box was much busier with heavier traffic.
This makes me cry. I was 7 years old right there, 1970. I went to Mission Beach Elementary on the right going North. I can't believe this film exists, the song with it couldn't be more perfect. Thank you for this.
Mission Beach Elementary school was torn down about 5 years ago and condos have been built in it's place.
@@patr70 oh wow.. don't imagine actual families living down there anymore anyway. The rich took over my home town and now I have to live in a zombie desert town in Arizona. Mission Bay Elementary turned into a school for kids with disabilities after it was an elementary school. Back in the day, my brother and I would leave early to go see the seals at the Bahia Hotel, those were the days.
The Drive-In theater at 0:24 is now a Vons grocery store and has been since 1988.
I lived on Claremont Dr, went to Claremont High! Went bowling at the Quad!
My old stomping ground.. Grew up on McGraw St off Morena Blvd. Grandparents lived on Cowley Way close to The Quad. Graduated from Clairemont High aka Ridgemont.. Good times
The days before cable TV look at all the TV antennas on everybody's roof
Thank you.
This makes me sad to see what PB is now. Overvalued land littered with tourists who don’t respect the city. Can’t walk 20 ft without seeing empty beer bottles and trash.
