Hemochromatosis - My Iron Overload Story (2019)
I recently found out I have a condition called hemochromatosis (iron overload) where your body absorbs more iron than it needs. I created this video to tell my hemochromatosis story and raise awareness of the condition.
In this video you'll learn:
- What led to my diagnosis
- What I learned about hemochromatosis
- How I adjusted my lifestyle to live with hemochromatosis
- How my treatment and recovery is going so far
- Weekly phlebotomies anyone?
All this as seen through the eyes of an American living in Japan.

I was just diagnosed with hemochromatosis. I have an iron level of 197, my saturation in 63%, but my ferritin is 25.5. I'm really confused by these results because high iron and high ferritin usually go together. I stopped drinking coffee about 4 months ago, and I found some information on how coffee inhibits iron absorption. I'm wondering if I hadn't stopped drinking it, would I even know my iron is high. I'm having more blood work done to verify the diagnosis. Any ideas on why my ferritin isn't high as well?

I have the C282Y and H63D from both sides but did not get my diagnosis till age 62 and had a ferritin level over 1500. It was just too late. I am in liver failure, portal hypertension and presence of esophageal varices. I had no clue what was wrong...but was told I have a year, possibly two. I never heard of this disease before.

The 2nd time I definitely noticed a level of terrible cardio for 2 days... I'm going to learn more including getting my own meter and taking a ferritin test

Let me tell you you do not want it down to 10. The range hasn’t been changed since it was created. Here the normal is around 15-200. Doctor here in America say optimal is 100. I’m in America. I had to have 3 man made iron infusions. The days after the infusions were painful to the bone. That’s the bone marrow working. I felt so much better. When mine is below 30 I feel bad.

no mention of copper, it regulates iron, according to the book "Cure your fatigue" by Morley Robbins. Of course you have to donate blood, and ferritin levels in blood is not the way to check, but unless you a super rare or lost lots of blood 95% of ppl have iron overload

Thanks for sharing! Good on you for turning down that biopsy because it is no small thing but really sucks. I had it after they found a mass with sonogram, MRI, then CT. It was Cancer. Did/do have NASH /turned to fibrosis. They wanted to give me a Liver Transplant! I looked at every other option available to me. The same they tell you don't take any supplements. I ignored that and did a ton of research and took many that have been found to cause cancer cell death tons of antioxidants. Fenbendazole and Ivermectin as well. I got another opinion and had Laproscopic surgery. The lesion the other hospital stated "we could not believe it had not grown" is removed and had no blood source either. SO, the thing is during that surgery they found Iron deposits on my liver. I'm going for those tests for Hemochromotosis this week. What is f'd up is that a few years back my Iron level was very high and I cut out the skillets and Pumpkin seeds I ate by the handful. It went down to something reasonable BUT it wasn't the docs that said anything about it. I found out by researching my results myself. Same way I caught this cancer early 1.2 cm by READING my results was told were "good" When my white blood count was low. I'm up now to only 100lbs from the 89 I went down to. So sad about not being able to eat that Venison. Done correctly its heaven. Maybe now and then? lol There are other things besides blood letting (I call it) Check out Activated Charcoal and also Dr Greger's video's at Nutritionfacts.org re; Coffee and Iron absorption. There are other things/foods that block Iron as well, that you've most likely found in your research. Will look at your channel for your follow up :)

I had no idea that the body accumulated iron over your lifetime. Small acute accumulation of iron leads to a decreased lifetime. There have already been proven data. Now the question is how do you remove the iron that has slowly moved into your organs? Because once it starts moving to your organs they start creating an oxidative reaction. How do ypu remove auch iron from your organs?

Thanks! I have a very similar story, but I got a genetic test that confirmed I have the homozygous C282Y mutation that causes classic heredity hemochromatosis. In other words, the iron overload mutation came from both of my parents. In 1996, archaeologists discovered the genetic source of iron overload. Bronze Age Viking skulls found in Scotland had intact DNA with the C282Y mutation that causes iron overload.

Diagnosed with Hereditary Hemochromatosis in 2004. I get phlebotomy treatment every 3 months. Minimal red meat, minimal greens, no alcohol. The day of blood letting is a total loss. I just chill out and go fishing afterward. Then back to work outs etc. Quite simple. The needle is pretty big though. 😮

An underdiagnosed disease that deserves attention!! If one family member has this, several in the family and relatives also have it, so family investigations are of utmost importance. I had a serum ferritin level of 1100, now 60 as I remove 0.5 liters of blood every two months.

Sounds like you could use to brush up on practice of Standard American more often. I came across a paper that was a write-up of a case study, where a physician had induced Fe anemia in himself via six turmeric extract capsules (538 mg) daily. It's called "Iron Deficiency Anemia Due to High-dose Turmeric." It purportedly chelates with Fe. It seems a preferable alternative to weekly phlebotomies. Those were presumably high-circumin extracts. Also, Morley Robbins has a lot of stuff on the interaction of Cu, Fe & Mg.

My eldest brother had it , died from cirrhosis of the liver mid forty, his heavy drinking didn't help, my mother wanted to test my son for it , he was still in primary school, I suspected my mother wanted a donor for my brother, I refused the test for it and said he was to young for the procedure and it may never be a problem for him so it was an unnecessary procedure and that I would have a note made on our medical documents that a family member had it for future reference. Family members are also the first people they test for donor organs (I've always told my two children to be nice to each other , cause you never know when you might need a kidney in joking) , my brother was a chomo, he died on the toilet .

Symptoms don’t usually show up until someone is in their 40s , and by then there may already be some damage. If I were you I’d test myself and my children. Women usually have problems in men’s pause bc they are longer bleeding. Extra iron deposits sit in many areas of the body from joints to liver to pancreas which can lead to early diabetes or cardiomyopathy. Catch it early so you don’t have to play catch up after organ damage.
