I guess YT is blocking my comments again. Idk if this one is showing either. It gets really exhausting dealing with YT. Im probably just going to quit commenting on videos. I will be watching. Cheers.
I see you Sloeye matey. Keep commenting, And bless ya. :)
MX is very frugal too😊
Well it is of course yes :)
My favorite flavor of Ubuntu. It reminds me 9.04 and 10.04 so much.
Yeah that's what drew me to it eight years back. Fond memories of Hardy Heron and Lucid Lynx. The good old days:)
Those were the days! Have you ever tried ghostbsd? Their mate desktop is really good. No snaps to bother you with! And I know you are well up to the manual shell intervention work that does show benefit if you fully indulge. Slowly mothing away from linux, but I am running mx, fedora, chimera-linux, void, and manjaro on drives. The recent codswallop with removing credits for anyone Russian or even slightly Russian fro their kernel work input as developers is truly the last straw. I feel linux is coming to a downhill slope of late. Freebsd however is not subjected to the linux bickering and other nonsense, so that is what drives me... Be safe Nigel.
Often been tempted by ghostbsd and even tried it in the distant past for about a day. Whats it like with wifi and battery life?
I've had no problems with either out of box Nigel. But both nidia and Intel cards do need some after install work. It's not difficult, just need to rtfm.... Be safe mate.
Shouldn't be a problem on a laptop then... Not sure if I want to ditch my antix though and I want to get at least a year on the buntu laptops before I consider a change. Might try it on the dell or lenovo desktops though at some point. Cheers for the info matey and stay warm up there.
Wallpaper, please?
It's one of the default AntiX wallpapers. Not sure where else it's available I'm afraid sorry.
@@stationsixtyseven67 Okay, no problem. Thank you so much! 😊
Ah the Mate, the Gnome 2 looking OS that has changed so much over the years, that even the welcome screen and Software Boutique are now Snap packages themselves, which was a weird decision of Wimpy to make. Though to be fair he was working and leading mainstream Ubuntu at the time of Snap packages being properly released. You cannot get the welcome or Software Boutique back to being a Deb file as it used to be. It was this move that put me off of it. Plus where the hell has Ambiant Mate Themes gone? Though I think I have them somewhere on my Dropbox? Will take a gander. I have them in all different colours, like the Yaru themes. I'm pretty sure that the Ambiant Mate themes are still installable from Ubuntu-Welcome? Don't quote me on that though. Still a lot of green with this Mate ain't there?
The Boutique and Welcome screen are GONE now. At least that's a couple less snaps to be burdened by ;) Oh, and all the green is easily side-stepped by selecting one of the dark Yaru themes (as I do in the video).
I use antiX almost exclusively and only use MX for the exceptions. Love 'em both.
Antix is S...T...E...L...L...A...R...!!!
I think that I've been to several of those that you described. Good stuff ghosty!
Cheers matey :)
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS works perfectly on the old "August of 2016" AMD FX-8300/RX470 desktop PC that I finally got around to replacing with my new Ryzen7 5700X3D/RX6700 build. In fact, it's performed so well that I permanently deleted Windows 10 from the initial SSD and might use that disc for tinkering around with something else.
I agree. 24.04 is a surprise to me, a fantastic release all in all. Thanks for watching :)
It's been a while since I've used The Inkster. Thanks for the tutorial mate!
New playlist. If I can pull my finger out there will be lots of doodling, both digital and analogue to come :)
Is this Whitechapel? EDIT: I just read the description. Hahaha! Sorry mate.
I am watching with no sound. Might be what I'm missing, but what does title 'dear boss' mean Nigel? Be safe.
It was the letter sent to the police that coined the name of 'Jack the Ripper' in 1888 ;)
Just got the chance to watch tonight...spent the last 3 days moving. I've never been this tired nor has my back ever hurt this bad. At this point, I want to cause as much damage to as many things as I can, curse out a complete stranger for no reason, and put tape on a cat's feet. Hahahaha! B...R...R...R...A...A...A...a...a...a...!!! Hope you and Birdie are doing well! Thanks for the video!
I started using linux 5 years ago, first distro was linux mint then distro hopped through dozens of distros (RHEL forks, debian, arch and nixos) even trying out BSDs a few times, hackintosh on my laptop. People online constantly hate on ubuntu so i just avoided it, until i installed it myself and never hopped again, i'm using ubuntu 24.04 as well. Runs perfectly on my laptop, absolutely zero complaints though i don't use snaps. Great video
I think a lot of the hate Ubuntu gets is from when they initially introduced mandatory snaps (and maybe some lingering distaste from the Amazon search debacle from before then). Snaps were slow and untidy back then. Things have changed as they often do and it's pretty seamless now - though developer scrutiny still needs to be tightened up a lot. I agree with your policy of avoiding snaps as far as is possible. Thanks for watching :)
Why should constantly using only one distro be an exercise? I have used Ubuntu for more than 10 years, changing only LTS releases to LTS release, almost no issues (just reading carefully for hardware compatibility when choosing next laptop) Now unfortunately work for a company with mac laptops and I struggle( planning to return back to Ubuntu)
'Why should constantly using only one distro be an exercise?' because my immediate peer group are notorious distro-hoppers and I myself have been pretty reactionary when Canonical drop new 'innovations' from time to time. This exercise was to see if I had overreacted to such things. My conclusion to that is 'yes I have', and what I take away from this exercise is that GNU/Linux users waste far too much time sweating the details and not enough time accepting that we are all one group, whether on Arch, Gentoo, Debian, Slackware etc. We are all in a place that we should celebrate rather than wasting time and energy in-fighting. :)
I run the daily build of lmms btw, it has a lot of new features. The appimage can be installed without breaking your existing lmms from the repo.
Thank you for the tip, I'll have a look at it :)
I wanted to thank you for 2 reasons: first making this video, I agree with all your points (I am a linux user myself). 2nd: I am planning on installing linux on my parents PC. I keep going back n forth between OpenSUSE Tumbleweed (what I currently use on all my computers) and Kubuntu. This made up my mind. For them, they don't need the latest and greatest. I will go with Kubuntu. Still on the fence about LTS or 24.10. Lol thanks for the video!
24.10>lts and opensuse is quite reliable.
Honestly, I'd opt for the LTS for the longer support cycle. I recall reading somewhere that the 24.10 is problematic WRT the build of Plasma it uses. Could have been on Distrowatch?
@bhargavjitbhuyan9394 i was hoping openSUSE Slowroll would have been out in time. However, it doesn't look like that will be the case.
@stationsixtyseven67 okay, I'll just go safe with the LTS then. I heard they will be getting kernel 6.11 by January. So at least there is that.
I just couldn't wait for the new kernel 6.11 and MESA drivers so I upgraded my 24.04 LTS to 24.10 about 2-3 weeks ago, went smoothly and I haven't used WIndows 11 since April. My other SSD has Win11 that I got when I bought this computer; but debating whether to copy Linux over it, but hesitant just in case I need a backup.
I bought a new machine a year ago and the first thing I did (after wrestling with Win 11 for a month or so) was to buy a new NVMe SSD and swapped it for the Win 11 one, put MX Linux on it and I haven't looked back since :) I still have the Win 11 one but it's just sitting in a drawer now doing nothing. A spare drive.
@@stationsixtyseven67 I have Ubuntu 24.10 on my slower SSD pcie 3.0 but my faster SSD is PCIE 4.0 with Win11 on it and they cost a fair amount for 2 TB.
@@cybernit3 I'm Still on 500GB NVMe with 1TB spinning rust storage. I have another SSD slot that I could maybe put the original drive in (and blank it) but so far I don't need the extra space ;)
In meantime i am: completely broke my linux mint for 40 minutes after install, with ACMI error)))
BIOS/UEFI problems?
Anyone else can't put HTML in their "notify-send" commands? It just shows the actual code.

gnome always did and still does look absolutely awful!
Plasma man? ;) I honestly don't mind it now. Hated it when it first landed though.
@@jimw7916 I never managed to get comfortable in KDE/Plasma. Kinda did in the end with Gnome, but I mostly prefer XFCE or Openbox WM to be completely honest.
How's the speed of web browsing? I have found web pages - Firefox and Brave both - really slow a good bit of the time. I'm wondering if I've added some rogue extension or something else that's messing it up.
Seems about the same to me as a .deb instance of Firefox on MX quite honestly. I was expecting lag on startup but haven't noticed any slowdown at all.
Hello Nigel. Running various distros across drives, all xfce. Not pure Ubuntu at all. But flatpaks are the bonus for us all. I install "flatseal" initially. And all my qbittorrent in use across distros are flatpak. I stick for as long as i can, as yo say six months is a nice comparitive figure. So i think ill get xubuntu and give it a whirl with my flatpak strategy methinks... Nice little video BTW! Best wishes to you as ever.
Cheers James, always good to hear from you matey ;)
Hi Ghosty, Congrats on 6 Months. I love the panel on the Left side. Do you still have the monitor? Thank You. Enjoy from the East Coast.
Hiya matey! Yep still got the monitor, it serves my desktop pc (with MX23) very well indeed. How long has it been now? Must be four years? Hope you're keeping well my friend and still rocking linux :)
I have a soft spot for Ubuntu and would recommend it to anybody. My solution to Linux borking is to keep it stock standard. Only change your wallpaper. On Fedora since 35 and still as smooth as butter, even with the updates to the next edition. I enjoy the Gnome desktop.
Agreed. Regarding Gnome, I wasn't a fan when they first switched from the two panel layout to Shell, but it's improved a lot over the years and I really like it now.
My wife is a true technophobe but been running Linux Mint for a good few years now without any problems. I have also run it long term without any problems as I have with MX Linux. Not used Windows in years and not missed it one iota either. Good little video Ghostie and useful to new and prospective users.
Cheers matey :)
Do you use a steering wheel for these truck driving games?
No. I did try one for a while but prefer to use keyboard and mouse.
@@stationsixtyseven67 thank you. I'm gonna give this a try I think. Not much of a gamer though.
You don't like snaps, I don't like Ubuntu, hence MX Linux Xfce💙 I've never broken MX Linux😎
STILL rocking MX on my main rig Johan :) Well over a year by now - and I've never broken it either. This buntu is on a different machine, a laptop ;)
I've been tempted to try Strawberry a couple of times but couldn't pull the trigger. Do you like it?
Yeah it's great. Like Clementine without all the add-on radio and streaming stuff. Stripped down with just the stuff you need for playing your local files. I think you can add all the other doodads later if you want, but this way you get to choose just the ones you want? 'I think' anyway, that's not something I've wanted to look into. It's a great browser/player for local audio by default.
Hello Dan. I've been using strawberry across builds. It's excellent, building upon the clementine model..... Be safe.
@@stationsixtyseven67 I use MOCP by the way! 🙄🤣
@@billfawcett3691 😅💪
@@metafile001 Thanks Jim!!! I think I'll go ahead and pull trigger with your input and Nigel's! ...if I can get my mouse to behave. It took me literally about one minute to be able to hit reply. My mouse is having a nervous-jerkdown...
The startup sound might be in /usr/share/sounds/...unless they're sneaky (like I used to be) and put it somewhere else. Hahahaha! 10 hours of battery life?!?!? 😲
Crazy huh? :)
A while back I tried out 24.04 on the gaming pc. Very happy with it. Everything was buttery. ATS ran better than windows. Only reason I didn't keep it is for some reason OBS would kill my fps. Tried all three versions. Made no difference. Spent a couple days fiddling with it and eventually jad to throw in the towel.
Was it the snap OBS or the .deb matey?
Tried Snap, Flatpak, and deb. When i would play ATS without OBS is ran fantastic and beautiful. When I would go to record it tanked the fps. I fiddled with a ton of settings in each. My gamer is Ryzen 5 2600 X, 16gb ddr 4, and GTX 1650. It should be able to handle recording at 720p.
Wayland session or X11 matey? I know I have problems under Wayland, but I don't game on these laptops.
@@stationsixtyseven67 If I remember correctly... When you install the proprietary Nvidia driver the session defaults to X11. Yeah and that's the conclusion I came to. It's probably something between the driver and OBS. Not recording, it ran fantastic. 24.04 will find its home on one of the many other PC's I have without Nvidia.
I've been using Mint for so long on my media streaming laptop that i have lost count but it's gotta be 8+ years. I just got some nice powered by Linux Mint stickers on ebay for my 2 Thinkpads, they are chrome and black and look cool on the laptops. Gotta love no snaps on Mint. 😁
I agree matey, but look at us: first, we kicked back against pulseaudio and most likely we're using it now (or even pipewire), then it was systemd and we're mostly using it now, then it was sandboxed programs - or was it? was it just snaps? ...the thing is, as much as we fight it change just happens anyway ;) I still love my Debian and MX the bestest though.
@@stationsixtyseven67 I have no problems using Flatpaks.
@@GManWritesAnd I'll happily use appimages. Theyre more like portable apps were back on windows to my mind.
I do miss Gnome 2 days, as for me it was more exciting.
Never fancied a bit of MATE? I was all over it in the 16.04 days but with GTK 3 it all seemed to go downhill.
You can find the startup sounds known as login in /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/ desktop-login.ogg if I remember rightly?
Could well be but I was hoping to access it from the UI for demo purposes.
Nice radio background.... Be safe.

@@stationsixtyseven67 hello Nigel. Tbh, a strike, or ban, or even worse threat os irrelevant to me. I know I've said it before, but I'm close to the end with my channel. Looking after our land at 68 is more tiring than five years ago, andit gets harder as time passes. Splitting logs for winter during first half of this year, well, until last month, was quite an effort this time round. As they say, flesh is NOT so willing of late!! Be safe.

I played a game for the first time in probably more than 6 months and it was on Linux😁 I fed my Thinkpad addiction and bought another used one and installed Mint Cinnamon, I was at work and felt like playing Team Fortress 2 so I installed it and it played just fine on the T480 Thinkoad integrated graphics. Bonus is I ordered it with 16gb ram but it came with 24gb.
Nice! :)
On my Ryzen 7 computer with AMD GPU, Ubuntu is faster than Linux Mint.
Cool! :)
Ubuntu 24.04.1 -- Even after updating to 24.04.1 (point release), I see that my laptop often gets the freeze for about 5 seconds or so. And most of the times, it works fine after the freeze, couple of times, its worse and the applications closes themselves. (we have to restart them..)
Sorry to hear that. Did you find any help online?
@@stationsixtyseven67 No, not yet. I found myself that if I disconnect the HDMI cable from the display monitor (secondary) attached to the laptop, somehow I can avoid the total freeze happening on the display, and it seemed like the laptop comes back to normal working condition. But no complete solution yet.
