There Is No Villain In (500) Days of Summer (Video Essay)
Took me years to understand this
You have to watch El Camino. It’s not a masterpiece like Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul but it does give Jesse’s character closure. It’s worth the watch.
When he speaks about true love & relationships and finds out he likes her, but then kisses him? Yeah she clearly began to lead him on.
Summer was abusive. Tom was naive. They are not the same
This is a crap delusional viewpoint that puts all the blame at Walt’s feet but paints Jesse as just an innocent victim lmao
This isn't a Marvel movie your searching for villains just shows your lack of understanding.
deadass not listening to the mixtape I made you is a relationship ender
Saying that summer needs to work on her communication skills and then proceeding to call her an asshole when she said what she was thinking was crazy
I will now proceed to remember the name of this channel to avoid it
You said shitty childhood but before said on record his parents were good parents. And im not judging or anything im just confused im sorry but your explanation was awesome other than that misunderstanding (Edit:) Finished the video sorry you explained well to me sober me is in charge from the night😂
Tom was an immature manchild with Peter Pan syndrome in terms of how he viewed relationships. Summer was an average office girl who entertained Tom out of relational boredom; even though she knew he couldnt emotionally handle it when she let him down. The end.
Tom was a naive person that loved someone too much. Summer used that to control and hurt tom. The end.
why does everyone keep forgetting about combo's death. he was a close friend of jesse, and he only died because of walts demand to expand territory. THAT was the first real tragedy, and is the reason why him and jane ended up back on drugs to begin with. everything else in the show is a chain reaction from that, walts first act on greed rather than necessity.
Bro literally defending jesse to a whole lvl jesse and Jane would have take no matter what happens Combo yes walt fault but jesse caused troubles more than that after and before combo murder like his greedy when he didn't like the one million and half in a 3 months and other things
This is a poorly paced video
Why does everyone forget how many times Walt saved Jesse? Jesse saved Walt once with the Gale situation, but Walt was only in that position because he saved Jesse from Gus’ drug dealers. Mostly everything was Jesse’s fault until after Gus was dead.
If not for walter met him again for cook, jesse would've been shot dead in some alley being friends with people like emilio couple of months later. If not for walter jane wouldve killed jesse, she just wanna escape her dad and want jesse's money. If not for walter jesse wouldv No denying walter using jesse all along but he cared for jesse, walt's life wouldve been smooth if he just let jesse die after season 3.
The thing is yes Tom has issues obviously. He's a hopeless romantic trying to fix things with her when again and again it doesn't work out. But summer definitely didn't help with that. First off she kept saying that she's not looking for a relationship that they're just friends but her actions said the complete opposite. She held hands with him kissed him slept with him crossed all the boundaries that friends are not supposed to cross. Then she started opening up about her feelings to him, so to him all of that was a sign that she was opening up to him, that something had changed then after all that they've been through together she tells him that they are just friends. So understandably he's a bit pissed. But if that wasn't bad enough she tries to reconnect with him and try to be friends with him, knowing that he will never just see her as a friend. I'm speaking from personal experience but getting over someone is so much harder when they are still in your life. And eventually he got over her, but only after he cut her off and started focusing on himself. If she had continuously pushed to be in his life he never would have been able to move on. So not only did she lead him on but made it so much more difficult for him to move on. It would have been one thing if she was just ignorant to how he felt but she fully knew. My friend is still friends with his ex and because of that she can't move on and it's straining their friendship. I've told him to cut her off and let her heal but he feels bad for her and wants to keep being her friend. It doesn't work, and it feels like Summer pities Tom more than anything. But he didn't need her pity, he needed to cut her to be out of his life so he can move on with his life. And that's exactly what happens.
"Jesse Pinkman Is Breaking Bad's Most Tragic Character" NO he is NOT! 🤣😂He didn't deserve what happened to him but he put himself squarely in the middle of it. Hank "Is "Breaking Bad's Most Tragic Character" but because he was written to unlikeable...
Wtf? hank was the best breaking bad character at least top 5. Frigging badass.
Hot movie
Tom is an anxious attachment and Summer is a avoidant. They were not compatible and both needed secure partners
I don't understand how you criticized Summer for her dishonesty and honesty
I agree, idc if it's filler, slice of life in dragon ball HIT DIFFERENTLY bcs ot the continuous at stake our characters are, it makes the fights more valuable knowing they have good fun and precious lives
I’m pretty sure we could’ve figured this out on our own
your critique of Summer are the most accurate> her actions were not in line with her position that they were just friends. She continued to lead him on which in turn fed his "dilussions". But why were they delusions? Because she led him on and made it seem like they were a couple. Tom is not suffering delusions about where he stands with Summer if she wasn't giving him the signals that he was more than a friend. if she truly thought they were just friends she shouldn't have pulled her hand away, then gave him a kiss as they were leaving. Even at the very end when she tells him she found her true love and things she was never sure of with him she holds his hands as if they are still intimate.
Summer: We're just friends Tom: no dont pull that with me. dont even try that. This is not how you treat a friend. Kissing in the copy room. Holding hands in IKEA. Shower sex? Come on, friends my balls" Summer: I just dont want a relationship. How is Tom wrong to assume that he's in a relationship with Summer? do you hold hands in Ikea and then have shower sex with your friend? She knows that what she is giving Tom is what you'd do if you were in a relationship. So, she's actually talking out of both sides of her mouth. if she truly only valued Tom as a friend she wouldnt be reciprocating intimacy. Yet Tom is somehow the bad guy here? No, Tom is stupid to continue in a relationship with someone who is giving him hot and cold, and friendship/lover vibes. Summer is playing with his affection by totally leading him on. She's getting the attention she desires while at the same time getting to act aloof and pretend like she just wants casual. She's actually managed to put him in the friendzone by making him think he's in a relationship with her. that's pretty psychotic actually. if she doesn't;t want a relationship what does she think would be different If she WAS in a relationship. would she not be holding hands in IKEA and having shower sex? thats pretty much what you do with someone you're in a relationship with.
A friend doesn't allow another friend to be in unreciprocated love with them.
that’s not how emotions work
precisely. Tom could have learned the exact same lesson in a much less destructive way if she instituted actual boundaries and corrected for the effect her behavior was having on him. Instead she kep. fucking. going. She knew what she was doing. She knew it was hurting Tom. And she kept doing it. I fucking hate how we both sides this goddamn movie. It is 100% to critique Tom and communciate the lessons Tom should learn without saying he was the problem, because he wasn't the problem.
I haven’t watched this movie in years. IIRC, the movie is clear about Tom’s hand in his own suffering.
Thank you for recommending this movie. I watched it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it :)
I've been Tom, o had my own "Summer"/Jenny They're both emotionally immature Neither if them were prepared to be involved He overestimated his readiness for a relationship (and probably hoped to close that gap with "will") and she had the power to or grant or withhold romantic and sexual favour They neither of them were responsible for their obligations to themselves or each other He wasn't really a grown man able to be what SHE needed She overestimated how much she could TAKE from the situation in validation and emotional currency without their being consequences They both made judgements based on thinking both they and the other were mature They are not well suited, but for a time he filled a need in her, and she stood in for his Anima
Living in Southeast Asia all my life, Summer is more villainous than Tom. Hear me out. We can clearly see that Tom is delusional and too insecure, and Summer knows that. We all know that, but Summer lets Tom lead her towards her. As she said, they're happy, and it's convenient to her until it's not. Tom is just too vulnerable
I'm coming apart at the seams... pitching myself the lead in other people's dream now, buzz, buzz, buzz...
The first one was entertaining trash. Won't be seeing the second.
El Camino should never have been made , there's just no need for it.
3 months. no likes or no comments, what does that tell you my man? No one cares about your stupid take on this. El camino was a good movie.
Peak horror? Not even close. A good thriller? Yeah. It had decent "shock" moments. But overall it'll be lost amongst all the others of the genre.
The Oscar nomination is far fetched to me, but this is certainly a movie I'll be remembering and rewatching every few years. Peak body horror imo. It's very rare for me to watch scenes through my fingers and I did that several times here
@@TheDiamondFerrari It did have it's moments I agree. But I'm so desensitized to gore and shock. I've seen someone's guts pour out of them IRL. So it's very difficult to shock me lol
The trailer looked wild as hell. Thanks for reviewing it.
I loved Late Night with the Devil! I have heard of the plot of this movie and wasn't all that interested, but to hear that it's better than the original makes me want to see it! I'll have to check it out! Thanks for the review!
Aw thank you that means a lot
I lost respect for Jesse character when he started working with the DEA, if you go into this life you should know the rules, no police NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, he wasn’t built for this life
If Walt didn’t let Jane die they both would of die due to an overdose anyways, he saved Jesse’s life by letting Jane die
Not true, they could have escaped and lived together happily
@ Jane had already started overdosing, you mean to tell me you don’t think it would of happened again? Plus why is Walter expected to save a stranger, if someone’s having a fit outside and someone doesn’t want to give cpr that person isn’t a bad person for not wanting to give cpr it’s their choice

Omg my first guest appearance🤭🤭🤭
Finally someone who agrees with me. They are two very different people who saw love very differently and needed each other to grow. It wasnt meant to be but it was meant to happen. Summer needed a guy like tom to show her the possibility and optimistic side of love thats why at the end she admited he was right. Tom needed summer or anyone of the matter (summer is more of an idea) to shatter his fictional look on love. Because of who they are of course they would act they way they did and its perfectly humanly fine. Tom is allowed to be angry when he doesnt get what he wants. Just as much as summer is allowed to reject toms advances on a serious relationship. Its human to feel these ways and it's so disheartning watching people project there feelings towards the character and drag them down. I keep seeing ppl put tom in the dirt when everyone that i know of has gone through what he had to a certain extent. Truth is everyone has been a tom and many try to excuse that fact but its part of growing up. Just because youve grown through it and changed does not give you the right to trash someone going through it.
I'll play Devil's Advocate and say that I don't believe Summer lead Tom on. Did she not make it clear at the bar, in front of his friends?? Her desires were pretty clear to me - I'm going to be insensitive and say that it's on Tom thereafter. He blatantly ignored who she was as an individual, and actively refused the type of connection she said she wanted - one that lacked a labeled relationship. She wanted fun connection. It's possible to have - you don't HAVE to be in a conventional relationship to have fulfilling connection. He wanted to be the one to "change her mind through the power of love," but never saw or respected her as an autonomous person. I don't know how anyone could misinterpret her intentions? It's unfortunate, but it is completely on Tom. He was read the contract, didn't want to believe what it said, and signed himself up. He's responsible for not listening, and he's responsible for entering this situation.
Libertarian perspective: Yes. Tom is an adult with informed consent. No one owes anyone the time of day let alone a committed relationship. That being said, after "friends my balls friends" the right thing would have been would have let him cool off to discuss things. Not go over his place and have sex with him. Still on him but.
Moron ..
Just watched this movie for the first time. Well crafted movie, and there’s no villain (and there doesn’t need to be). Two different people, both flawed, and that’s ok. That’s life.
Thanks for the vid❤. While there was good character development and great character moments, I still call this season a filler season.
Naah he is a selfish “bitch”. He should have been “salamanca-ed” but on charity 😂
Theres a video titled In Defense of Tom by wolf visuals that shed some new light on this topic and that is that theres very strong evidence that not only is Tom an unreliable narrator but the author of the screenplay was at the time of writing it was an unreliable writer. The story is semi based on his experience. You know that dedication at the start of the film? That was his summer. Shes a real person and he didn't bother changing the name. Theres more evidence but the smoking gun is an article the screen writer wrote to a uk publication with a title of something along the lines of the best revenge is making a movie about it. For me it solves all the issues I was having with the story which is even if Summer made her intentions clear, and everyone is quick to point to this, Tom also made his intentions clear as well. And we're given a story about how Tom is in the wrong trying to force a full relationship. But its often overlooked how Summer is doing the exact same thing except shes forcing a fwb relationship with someone whos so clearly not right for the role that it comes off as cruel to even entertain the idea. To me Summers actions is like finding a puppy at a dog shelter and taking it home and after awhile taking it back to the shelter. With the new information in mind its kinda clear what happened, the writer wasn't over his own summer. He knew the "right" and "healthy " end result that should be arrived at and tried writing it. However, he just wasn't able to write Summer in a fair way and just had to show her mean nature.
or maybe, just maybe, Summer was mean, because those kinds of people are. Tom hurt nobody but himself. Summer destroyed Tom
‘I didn’t watch el Camino’ bruh why 😭😭😭
Fr. Wud be sick
El Camino has been out for years... Why did you make this video without watching it?
right 😂😂😂
What would it do with the show the movie is after the show events so no matter if jesse was good chracter in that movie or not
Chef Jeff winger lol
I was told by someone that I reminded them of Summer back when this movie came out. I just watched the movie yesterday, and man...I don't know if that was a insult or a compliment.
for sure an insult👍
Ill say tom was victim but he was not innocent too😅
