I bought big zip locks and cut and folded them to the size of my books. You can do it in a way that you can still use the lock. Lots of work. But looks nice. Of course they’re not completely sealed anymore, as you have to cut the sides of the lock, but it should still create some good protection I hope. That said I’ve been reading up on archiving and plastic is not recommended.

I think it all depends on how hard is the spine. Unfortunately my book's spine was not elastic at all, so this approach didn't worked for it, spine got damaged.
Some books have extra rigid spines especially old books as the glue on the spine has harden and became brittle. I'm sorry the spine of your books got damaged.

I do. But you must take the books out of the bag to air regularly. The bag stops moisture from getting in but it also traps moisture in the bag.
I have 1 question. Why some books open all the way to the sides, even without this technique. You can just put them flat on the bed, no need of holding it with your hands.. Like our school textbooks I remember, then theres a 1000 page book i have hitchikers guide to the galaxy. While so many paperbacks like the six of crows, we need to hold them and read?

interesting, but would you recommend sealing completely or leaving an inch or so open to allow books to breath? The bags certainly keep dust and contaminants away from the paper, but do you noy think a little ventilation will help? I have some dustcovers that are printed with some sort of ink that seems to adhere to the plastic, and over the years causes the colours to adhere to the bag, removing it from the dustcover. Humidity is the killer here, maybe silica gel or similar may help? In the UK we had low humidity and rarely got any mold or similar, however here in Asia, the humidity is the real destroyer of books.

Does it mean that putting books inside plastic bags are really helpful to prevent humidity? I live in the philippines with the tropical weather we have, my home's humid is always at 60-70, and I collect manga books and I they easily fox, so I started putting them in plastic bags. I hope I could at least delay the foxing and yellowing by doing this 🙏🏻

@@kkg108 no, it can nurture mold if you live in humid areas. If you want the least possible yellowing, do what I've been doing for ~2 years now: -keep them in a dark place (awayyy from sunlight/windows, and away from direct artificial lighting, LED light bulbs are better than fluorescent) -use silica gel packs (cheaper than a dehumidifier) -maintain cool temperature -keep your room/manga area clean, dust the shelves occasionally and vacuum or sweep the floors every day

Same. :'( I just cracked mine too
My tip: break the spine, it really doesn't matter. Books are designed to be read, if you are constantly worrying about the damage done by reading the thing, then it kills the whole point. I never care if the spine will get bent or broken, I just open the book whichever diddly damn way I find to be most comfortable, and roll with that. I will break a spine if it just means being able to look a word in the eye. I really loved all my books. They are expensive and I'm waiting for two to three months for them to arrive at my doorstep. If that termite eat my book, I'll cry and difinitely will find a way to kill that creature, at once.
Rather then kill them just take care of books before, keep checking once week or so 👍
My house don't have termites, but still not save because got Cockroach, and silver fish. That's what I'm worry about. 😭😭😭
