315. Tips for Towing or Driving an RV and is RVing the Cheapest Way to Vacation?
Jason - in case you haven’t priced it yet you might have some sticker shock on Breckenridge lift ticket prices. The resorts of Keystone and Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin) are short drives away. Keystone is on par price wise with Breckenridge. A-Basin is the cheapest option about half the price of the other two and is only a 30 minute drive from Tiger Run. The mid mountain lodge at A-Basin has pretty decent food. We go up to that area for a week each year with my brother in law from Texas. He prefers A-Basin followed by Keystone.
Thanks for the info! Appreciate it!
Nice, Good job
Thanks! We appreciate it!
You’re not last on Going to the Sun! We’ve stayed at GLAC twice. First time, in Two medicine (east side). Road was closed on west side for fire. This year, stayed in Apgar on the east. Road closed on the west for snow. Someday……..😂. Here are two more: Beartooth Highway in Montana, and the Kancamagus Hwy and Mount Washington Auto Road in NH. Bummed we can’t make Utah; this is our year to be back on the east coast.
Sorry we'll miss you!
Absolutely loved this! 🚗🌟 The way y’all bring these iconic routes and hidden gems to life is next level. 🌄🛣️ I’m all about the Enchanted Circle and supporting local businesses-it makes the journey so much richer. 💙✨ Your tips are gold for travelers like me. Can’t wait to hit the road again! 🌍✈️👏🏾
Enchanted Circle was a great drive for us in April…try to visit the Taos Pueblo while you’re there!
Although this is an interstate, it has to be the most spectacular interstate in the US. I-70 west from Golden CO to the end in Utah (where it picks up I-15, and south to St George and the Virgin River Canyon is lovely, too) and the eastbound direction. Spectacular. I just smile on the entire route. Do ALL the pull offs. Even the ones that are close together. In both directions. Spectacular. And they frequently have trails, as you mentioned. Highlights include Glenwood Canyon (amazing feat of engineering), the San Rafael Swell and Reef, and general views of mountains, red rock, fins, and so much more! Love it! Know that many state parks have year round availability, including now in winter, with electric sites. In Utah, 191 is phenomenal. And the cut over to Monument Valley in Arizona on 163. Basically get a paper map, pick a spot, and look at the roads with the most curves that are still doable in an RV. Bound to be gorgeous! Yay for road engineers, well banked corners, wide shoulders, and fabulous rest areas and viewpoints!
Agreed!
We did Going to the Sun road this summer in a f350 dually long bed!😳 We stayed on the east side of Glacier and you don’t need a timed entry at the Saint Mary entrance.
In Colorado, another way to go up, on the west side, is from Cortes to Dolores and up along the river (very pretty) towards Telluride and then Ridgway. It’s also lovely.
Hard to find a bad drive in Colorado. 🫶
We did the PCH from SF to Seattle 8 years ago. We left the RV at home and just stayed at BnBs and small mom n’ pop hotels. We just took our time stopping wherever and whenever. Being native Floridians, we go to the Keys every year for Lobster Season. It’s beautiful, but we’re kind of jaded having driven it so many times.
Utah 12..and Utah 95! The 95 connecting Capitol Reef to Blanding, on your way too/from Moab or Monument Valley is just as amazing as the 12. Less traveled, but a must do.
Great suggestion!
Route 66 across Texas, New Mexico and AZ again this spring. Really good Mexican food in Tucumcari, NM. Everywhere you look in Utah is a great view. The whole state could be a national park.
Have a great time on Route 66 this spring!
Shenandoah NP's Skyline Drive is gorgeous in the fall! Just NOT Columbus Day weekend when all of DC is there! New England recommendations: Kancamagus Hwy in NH, Acadia in ME has gorgeous drives.
Thanks for representing the NE for us!
Route 66 is a moniker for an Adventure like Milner/Maharis in the Corvette. It is the spirit of the trip not the specific destination or accomplishment. PCH1 north of Golden Gate is superior to its famous southern brethren.
Blue Ridge Parkway was scheduled to be down thru 2025 for bridge replacements. Helene just allowed them to slow down a bit and blame the weather versus management of the road..lol. But when they are done, 60% will be newly paved and new fancy bridges! I'll be there when it opens again!
Totally agree about Hwy 12! The roads linking Zion to Bryce to Capitol Reef and Arches/Canyonlands are simply incredible! The views are just breathtaking. We did the Grand Circle in 23 and were simply amazed by the views in between the National Parks! We live near the PCH and Big Sur and, like the rest of you, are waiting for the repairs to be made that are now over a year in the making...but that doesn't mean everyone can't come to Monterey and enjoy the 1 around the Bay and up to Half Moon Bay. Hope you guys make it out here again sometime!
We'll be sure to make it back out there again!
Cheers to the Holiday season and an amazing 2025!
To you as well! Thanks!
Nope campfire every night for me, may be we need to teach people some etiquette about camp fires
I had to jump back in after Abby's fresh tank. Wicked was amazing! Robert and I loved it! Great story, great songs, and the cinematograpghy were all great! The twist at the end was definitely emotional and so fitting for our times. Can't wait for Part 2!
It's definitely very prescient of today. We're probably going to go back to see it this week!
Your trip sounds great! We'll be in the Southwest from early Jan.- mid-March. However, we havn't figured out a later spring trip yet. Colorado/Utah sounds good. Heck, maybe we just need to stay out there till summer. Lol We have Hawaii, including three nights in the Volcano House Lodge and American Samoa booked for September. We've been home since Homecoming, so it's time to get moving. Gros Ventre, by the way, is great. You'll likly have moose come through the campground. In Yellowstone,we loved Canyon Campground because it was pretty central.
You should stay out west!
If you can’t get in Colter Bay, try Headwaters Campgtound at Flagg Ranch, just north of Colter Bay.
We stayed at mammoth hot springs campground. We drove around the park every day. Fishing bridge, has built a new area, on top of the hill. They all are Full Hookups, And all are pull thru, with open skies for starlink. And if you do camp at one of the primitive sites, while in an RV. Fishing bridge also has two dump stations, available.
I hope you can extend your stay at Gros Ventre, it’s such a great central location there in the Jackson valley with easy access to the park and town. Inside the park, a lesser known stop is the Rockefeller Preserve and Phelps Lake. We were there on the 4th of July 2022, and there were very few people. The hike is good, but the sensory experiences incorporated into the Preserve HQ building and surroundings make the stop worth while. It’s on the Moose-Wilson road. Hope you have a great trip!
We’ve been able to make some site hopping happen and will be there longer!
Totally agree about staying a few nights in multiple YELL locations. Helps to really figure out where you want to hike or what you want to see. Bears should be active in May! They were barely waking up when we were there in early April for biking in the park before the roads were open ♥️ we may see you.
Awesome!! Hope to see ya there!
Ft. Wilderness Disney World in January 2025 is less expensive than the Key West/ Sugarloaf Key KOA ( by mucho$$$) I never thought I would say this. Guess where are going during our Florida trip? I’ve been to all your summer trip spots. I agree you need to stay in North Yellowstone, Middle Yellowstone, and south Yellowstone. It’s so big. Bigger than Rhode Island. Driving times in the park are just a killer. Also, if you ever go to Glacier. Split your stays between West Glacier and East Glacier.
Oh happy day, have fun at The Fort!!! Woohoo. We’ve been there in Jan and it’s great. Thanks for the Glacier recs. Appreciate it!
Grow Vawnt (big belly) 😊
Thank you!
Colorado is awesome ♥️ You may already know this. Iron Mountain is sweet for small pools. The main/historical hot springs just had a major redesign, looking forward to checking it out again as it looks to have smaller, hotter pools now. Be aware that mud season is a real thing in the spring. For boondocking it could be an issue. But You might need spikes (for ice) for Hanging Lake. And you’ll need a reservation. There may be a shuttle.
Nomads view in Wall SD boondocking is the best boondocking in the US
It’s amazing. We’ve been there a few times and it’s just unbelievable how gorgeous the views are…the wind on the other hand. Lol.
@ it was my wife’s first boondocking experience and that my have been a mistake on my part, she thought they all should be like that lol
I’m glad y’all enjoyed Wicked. I’m going to see it Thanksgiving Day
Have a great time! Look forward to hearing what you think.
We are also having struggles with how campgrounds open up their reservations. As for Wicked...the changes we can see in the previews to the story and the music arrangements (as well as Arianna Grande who is a "NO" for me) make it really hard for me to opt into the film version of a musical I adore the stage production SO very much! Glad to hear you loved it!
Ariana Grande is absolutely perfect in this roll, and she sings it as well, if not better than Kristen Chenowith (gasp, I know), so please don't let that keep you from going. Jason LOVES Wicked and the movie was A++ for him. Good luck with your campground reservations. It's a headache, but always worth it, right? Happy Thanksgiving! -Abby
@@RVMilesPodcast Thanks Abby! Might have to give it a ring. The money was certainly provided for a lavish production (as it should be!) so...I'll just have to get over HER. LOL! I've spent my morning trying to figure out camping near Lake Tahoe and it's driving me nuts to the point that I'm considering a totally different route! LOL!
Pretty sure Tom “Iceman” Kazansky is Val Kilmer’s most famous movie character. His Doc Holliday was good too, but it has to compete against all the great westerns
These are FACTS! ~A
My favorite Val Kilmer role is Madmartigan in "Willow", but I've never seen "Tombstone".
Thanks for sharing your plans and the cool places you will be traveling to. Have fun skiing in Colorado. There can be a substantial amount of snow that time of year.
Very much looking forward to it!
I’m hoping to join y’all in Coalville. Unfortunately, I’ll need to spend some of the time there working remotely. Do you have a feel yet for Starlink access at the park? Great show! Thanks!
Should be decent, they do have trees. Their wifi is supposed to be decent too. Hope to have you there! Here's the location: www.roamamerica.com/echo-island/#location
We really enjoyed Big Pine a few years ago and we are not full hook-up/KOA/private campground people. It was a great location for the area, reasonably priced. Got some rest and laundry done after boondocking on the Wall in the badlands and visiting the Black Hills and Custer!..
That's great to read!
Hwy 80 is no fun in the winter for sure
I bet. Thankfully, our I-80 plans in the winter will only take us as far west as Des Moines.
I’ll be back soon to watch the podcast. See you soon!
Hi Jason and Abby! I just wanted to say I hope baby Maggie is still doing well. I’m praying for her. Hope she is getting bigger. I think that’s great her parents finally had a baby after trying so long. I’ll will continue on praying for Maggie and the family. You said you didn’t want to anything written about in the comments in that podcast so I’m writing it in this one. Keep me updated on Maggie and d mother. I will continue to pray. 🙏
Thanks you, Sherri! She is growing and thriving and getting stronger every day. We are so thankful for the care she is receiving!
Oh Abby happy belated birthday to you and your son!
That is such great news! Thank goodness! I just I saw the podcast sooner I could have prayed then. I’ll still keep praying for her and her parents. Prayers always help.
YT Channel “Dirt in my Shoes” has a spreadsheet on her website with all the National Park campground opening dates and reservation information. Excellent resource for information on booking NP campsites. She’s a former NP Ranger.
What a wonderful thing to provide the camping community! Thanks for letting us know. -A
I've book from NC to Quartzsite and Up California, over to Zion and Back through Texas. OK, GA, and back to NC with out any problem! hmmm this video is out over 7 hours and only 4 comments??
That’s really great that everything worked for you and we hope you have/had a great trip. We are happy to connect with people here on this topic or with those who listen on any podcast app and connect with us in other ways. We know you might be trying in a not-so-subtle way to call out our episode, but we don’t play games like that and that’s why we just posted episode 342. Peace to you. We hope you find the content with lots of comments you are looking for. -A
@@RVMilesPodcast Ah... no critic of your episode. I did my reservations in the off season. Definitely better chance. And the comment about comments was just an observation. You usually have 100's by the time I get there.
Fishing Bridge starts booking a year out. I will be at Yellowstone (Canyon Village) from May 1 until Oct 13. It is good to hear that Mammoth is going to be open. It has been closed since the flood in 2022. Check out the road getting into Mammoth area from Gardner MT. There is a length limit due to the road that is very narrow lots of sharp curves and no shoulder. This road was constructed after the flood as a temporary road. The old road was washed out in the canyon near Gardner. Starlink is still your best option in Yellowstone, and it will work at Fishing Bridge and Mammoth.
Thanks! Def a good reminder about the post flood issues that are still in effect around the Mammoth area. Have a wonderful season at Yellowstone! We can’t wait to be there in May. -
No tree lighting should be allowed before Thanksgiving. It’s just too early. The ONLY movie worth watching about Wyatt Earp is “Tombstone”. The other one may as well not exist. IMHO 😁
We’ll have to agree to disagree on the tree. When Thanksgiving is less than a month out, I’m not waiting! Lol. Is Kevin Costner in the Tombstone movie? Asking for a friend. 😉 -A
I remembered what I wanted to say about Fort Wilderness. Can’t believe that Airbnb cost that much. Also did I hear correctly about you fifth wheel. You don’t have it anymore? I didn’t know that. I wanted to wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🍁
Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes! 🦃🍁
No problem! That’s what friends like me do! 😊
Abby I forgot to ask you about your foot. What happened to your foot? I was going go ask you about it but I was busy going over questions I had about Fort Wildermess. I should have written it down because I forgot what I was going to ask if I remember I’ll ask later on.
