If Europeans really invaded Australia in the 18th century, then the war is long over- and Aborigines lost. The people who lived in the Sydney area prior to 1788 are long dead . Their distant and only fractionally related descendants today , provably by DNA testing, are only entitled to the same fair go that every other Australian citizen is entitled to. I think we are long overdue to start living the dream of the late Dr Martin Luther King- to treat people by contents of their hearts, character and conduct, and not by their race, creed, or colour of their Skins .

Interesting historic tid-bit. I found it interesting that you would acknowledge the indigenous owners but didn't acknowledge the 60,000 young Australian's who died and 160,000 soldiers who were captured or injured in the Great War, my Grandfather being one of them. After all, they were fighting to protect the country and the traditional owners. When I was a little boy at Central Station with my grandfather, he pointed out the chip in the marble. It was one of only a few times he ever spoke about the war. He told me that some of his mates were involved in the incidents, they all died in the war. It's sad that these young men were remembered as hooligans when in fact they were only demanding better conditions. None of the young soldiers were under the impression that there was signing up for a holiday cruise or something glamorous. The horrors of the war in Europe were well known. It's sad that there isn't a small plaque to honour the young men who were only demanding better conditions, rather, history has forgotten them.

The convention in Australian street and location signage is to drop apostrophes.

I was in Sydney at the end of February this year (2024) and, whilst walking around The Rocks, came across this cottage. Its location, overshadowed by a massive cruise ship, was quite extraordinary. Information was limited, so your post is really enlightening

In my time as Readers Ticket holder at the library of NSW i stumbled over a directive to John Cadman and his duties from the government. And one of them was not indeed to worry too much about any sort of small boat, but to gather up any sets of oars or any large piece of cloth that could be used as a sail and 'Hold them in a secure place overnight'. It seems the extension to the back building was used for this purpose.

It has early plumbing hewn from the sandstone underneath the floor and maybe the old lead pipes are still there. If they were for drinking water, that might explain some of the strange behavior?
