Thanks for stopping by! My name is Gary and I am by no means a professional landscaper, carpenter, electrician, plumber, or any other skilled professional. As I build up my own experience around my house, remodeling the daughter's house, and building a 4 plex rental property I will take you along my journey and try to share any tips or lessons learned that you can use in your own everyday home repairs. What I am is always looking to learn, not follow the crowd, and willing to jump in and get my hands dirty.
Thanks for watching

Extending My Roof Overhang,
This Video is a Do It Yourself lower roof extension on my house.
When you extend a lower roof it helps keep the water away from the foundation and makes the siding last longer.
Hi, I want to give you a little information about myself.
I am a true Jack-of-all-trades in building, remodeling, gardening, and homesteading. Do It Yourself is what I live for.
At an early age, before high school graduation, there wasn’t much that I didn’t try.
I would catch trout out of the streams around my home and cook them over an open fire, on a stick, In the same streams were areas with a crayfish population, which looked like mini lobsters, and tasted good boiled with some butter. Some more out-of-the-ordina...

Attic Access D-I-Y New Roof Hatch in a Old House
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.5 месяцев назад
This video is a how-to account of how I installed this attic access roof hatch on my roof. I needed to get up in the attic to install a new ductless heat pump, and solar light tube along with upgrading the insulation. I have natural wood cathedral ceilings and there was no good place to install an access hatch inside of my house. The new attic roof hatch was the best option for my situation. I ...

Carport Build --- Fast Moving
Просмотров 705 месяцев назад
Building Randy a carport only took about 3 days, only because the weather was so nice we had to indulge in beverage consumption. Building carports and shed-style additions are very easy. I waited until I framed the roof to concrete around the post just to make sure everything was plumb and square. The roof was only out of square by 1/4 inch which I classify as a success. Visit my website for in...

this is the easiest way to mark out a bird's mouth on a rafter that I know of.
rafter measuring and marking .... simply explained .. made easy

I had a comment asking for a video showing how to mark out a rafter for a 16' wide building using an 8" rise with a ridge beam, 1/2" sheeting, and a 16" overhang. I tried making it extra simple to understand. Marking out rafters is easy Practice makes it easier. This video also shows how high up to place the ridge beam as a bonus. How to calculate the bird's mouth How to calculate the total len...
Nice video!!
Painters acrylic latex on a shingled roof? Really? Just go get a tube of roofing tar. This shouldn’t be shown to people. This will cause worse issues down the road. Quick fix aka one day band-aid
You missed the part that stops the water from entering the hole left by the nail, the flashing that was placed under the shingle. The caulking only holds the shingle down on top of the flashing, yes OSI or Through The Roof roofing caulking is a better choice, but the goal of the video was to show how a person can do a quick fix that will last for years. I stand behind the information provided in this video. Thanks for watching and the comment.
thks! you just saved me a 15$ and another trip at the store
"thank you"!🎶🎶🎶🎶😉
Great video ! Question- planning to add eaves to garage sides only , stucco finish covering top plate and rafter ends every two feet . Should I remove stucco parallel exposing rafters where they sit on top plate and sister eave ladder to exposed rafter tail or leave stucco in place and drill through stucco to attach pre made ladder style eave extension using 2 x 4 with 1x6 fascia board ?
Great demonstration! I like your style!
Excellent in your explanation; make it for any person to understand
Glad you liked it
Absolutely amazing
thanks
Uncle infact you are heroes❤🎉🎉
great that you liked the video
Brilliant🎉
thanks
The music is a bit much. Video is good.. get rid of the music
will do
Amazing video!👏🏼
Thank you!!
🇩🇴🇺🇸🇩🇴🇺🇸
Simple easy method to learn. Thank you for teaching this.
Glad it was helpful!
On the tail cut why did you do a 5/12 instead of a 6/12?
Good job
I tried
I don't think you mentioned that if there is a Ridge Board that the rafters tie into at the top, you have to deduct half of the thickness of the ridge board for your rafter length calculation. Many times that Ridge board will be 2X something, so you will have to deduct 3/4 of an inch from your run to give you the right rafter length. Very important!
u keep it so simple and easy to understand. i watched few other videos or younger ones that does this and they go into math and all these terms like wtf i just want to build a roof not geting a PHD in roofing. thats so nice of u to put nails through your roof for a video. i wouldn't never do that
I love the music and your hat.
thanks

I'm subscribed🇺🇸🇩🇴🇺🇸🇩🇴
great
You’ve just made my life easier for my summer project work shop shed , thanks 🙏
Great to hear!
The only thing I see you missed is you forgot to subtract for half the ridge beam width. So 1-1/2" ridge board would be 3/4" , so your birds mouth would go off by 3/4" and overhang 3/4" too long.. Nice , clear explanation though.
Great learning experience
thanks
Maybe a dumb question but how do you know how high to the top? I want to build a 12x16 shed with an 8/12 pitch but I don’t know how high that would put it at the center. Do I just take 12 ft divide by 2, which would be 6 feet to the center, then do the 8/12 6 times? And then add whatever overhang I want?
Yes if you are looking for the length of the rafter. Thanks for watching.
Great video
Thanks for the visit
what is the white sheets called?
They are scraps of aluminum facia You could use any flat stock, even a soda or beer can cut to make a flat sheet. Hope that helps
Great video, should you not reduce half the ridge thickness? If you had some stair gauges make life a bit easier
yes that would work, thanks for watching
Really great video. Short and sweet and exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Uncle Gary That was amazing
thank you
I like your construction methods, easy, quick and simple
By far, the absolute BEST EXPLANATION AND EASE of using a framing square. Most videos are too complicated and I can't math like most. Lol Great job!!👍👍
You're very welcome!
What kind of nails did u use for going into the rafters tho? 4 inch?
depends upon the size of the material, there is a building code in the international building code that covers fastener size and placement. icc.org I believe is the website
Thanks uncle Gary learned a lot today hopefully me and my broday don’t mess it up
I hope so too!
Now that what I call common sense without measuring so much.😊
Thanks for the comment
What’s with the music not necessary
I hear you and will stop putting it in future videos
Just don't forget to account for your wall sheathing.
You are correct Thanks for watching
I'm doing the same concept to add a porch over. Although I have to raise the roor line 2'. Wish you were here to guide me. A little overwhelmed!
I am sure you will figure it out. Thanks
Any time I can avoid math is okay with me! I've watched a BUNCH of videos on how to do this and all left me totally confused. After watching yours, I walked away shaking my head at how absolutely easy it is and how needlessly complex it was made in other videos. Thanks a TON!
You are so welcome!
This was a nice video. You should do a video putting in a dormer with a bathroom and put a skylight in the bathroom.
Very helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Uncle Gary for your tutorial vlog on how to make a rafter and measure it simple.Love your vlog I enjoy watching and I learned a lot how to use a trip - square Thank you again Uncle Gary god bless you.
You are very welcome
Best video on framing rafter. Easy to understand. Thank you.
Wow, thanks!
Something looks wrong. You are cutting away nearly half of the rafter with that bird's mouth. This has got to be weak.
cause 2 by 4s are actrully 1 and a half by 3 and a half because how they process it
You are correct that this example does make a part of the rafter weaker. Any weakness would be at the overhang side of the building. You can cut a shorter birds mouth, ICC building code requires minimum 1 1/2" sit on the top plate of the wall. The weakness would become an issue in extreme snow load areas. If you were building in a snow load area you would use a rafter larger than 2x4. Thanks for the comment, I hope this video helps in your next building project.
Great job 😊
Thanks for the visit
You have the most amazing guide. For us novices, we appreciate the repetitive examples. May seem simple to the pros but confusing for us. Thank you sir!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the info i really need that it's was so simple
Any time
Nice !!! I’m a follower
Thank you
Awesome stuff my man you simplified enough I finally got it thanks alot i definitely need a few repetitions but it finally clicked
You got this!
Great
