This is such a great discussion, so many great points. I started art school for graphic design in the fall of 2007, a similar time to you, and I can't believe how prices have ballooned since. I remember when I started, one class was $1800, near the end of my BFA it was about $2200 per class, a $400 increase over the 4.5 years. Not sure I would recommend it for those who want to do graphic design today, there are other ways to get to the same destination. I definitely do not recommend for traditional fine arts, for that path just take other online classes or one-off continuing education classes at your community college, university, or even art school. It gives you a taste of what to learn, then go out and use the internet to build your own business around your art. Applied art degrees like graphic design actually can lead to real well-paying jobs, paid way more now than back when I graduated, due to the sheer fact of how much more design is in demand and recognized as important to a business's growth vs it being an after thought 15-20 years ago. But of course it depends on the industry, the company, your skills and location. While traditional arts are for the motivated self-employed / entrepreneurial business owners, at least that's the best way to make a success out of it.
Glad you got a lot out of it! The intensity of the cost increase over the last decade or so has been mind boggling. I still see value in programs like this, but colleges need to immediately prioritize affordability if they want to survive
Love this, Mel. Who do you get your prints made through?

A video on adapting to various energy levels would be great, it's definitely a struggle sometimes
i feel you on that, and heard. I am scripting one now :)
your sketchbook is even more special now that your cat helped and put its own mark 😻
Love this method, Mel! I definitely want to spend the month of January taking more time to process and reflect before setting goals!
Thanks so much for watching Smeeny! Originally I had a very ambitious plan for my year riiiiiight out of the gate but now I am reflecting and revisioning how I wanna proceed. Wishing you the best of luck this year and hope your adventure in Iceland is amazing!
Woah, this was an awesome structure for reflecting back on the year. I like the do-it-along format with indicated moments to pause - I did the exercise just now with you. I was surprised with items from all three lists and I noticed how I initially had a bit of fear and dread that I haven't done enough this year, and the resulting lists help me see how irrational that is. This exercise indeed helped me cultivate more self compassion and understanding, so thank you again :3
Hey, thank you! So glad you liked the format and that it helped you overcome dread! This comment totally made my morning because this was my EXACT intent with this video and script. Glad you can go into the next year with more compassion and understanding for yourself. ✨
This was a super charming video. You achieved a lot! I never thought to track hiking miles. I need more community like this, so I'll definitely check out your links!
Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words! It is pretty wild what I've been able to cross off my list this year. Over in the Discord you'll find my hiking tracker template, feel free to use it this year to track (but only if you want to!)
Great concept! Also, that twig-held mic is so cute heheh All three lists are great, such a human approach to being data-driven! :) Thank you Kate and to Mel for sharing what Kate shared with you 😁 And and yes to that energy levels video 🫂
Definitely coming back to this with a list and more notes.
amazing! definitely reply here or share over on the Discord if you find it helpful : ) Have a great new year!

thanks so much for watching! glad you enjoyed it! :)
Thank you for your video!
thanks for watching! hope it helps you in your practice :)
Great video that speaks volumes, thank you! I went to art school in the 80's ( SAIC & Pratt ) and it wasn't nearly as expensive as the numbers you're quoting today. The business part of art was never taught in school but I wish they did. We all had desires of making a living in art but were aware of the slim chance that would ever happen. Art education was about enriching our lives as creative people, not business.
Thanks for watching! I agree that art school had positive impacts on my curiosity and life as a creative human. The aspect of business I found most compelling and freeing post art school was the idea of an ideal audience. Simply knowing who I make art for and that it isn’t always the traditional museum collector is so liberating.
Art is a way of laundering money nowdays
it really can be in the upper echelons of it for sure
I always said if I were to win the lottery I would go to art school. This is why!!!
yeah, that would be a fun way to use lottery winnings! then you can fund a move to NYC or LA too and get a studio post-grad
came for art school closure, stayed for the insightful talk about learning different skillsets from different places, and tackling an issue holistically. Can't make money through art alone? Get a day job to fund it maybe. Maybe that day job can instill skills to market those very art skills so that you wouldn't need a day job. Really fascinating the way you approach this subject!!!
thank you so much for watching! What you bring up here is a crucial topic that has really helped me. Working in retail and marketing was eye-opening for how I can run the business side of my practice now.
I enjoyed the sketchbook tour. Absolutely beautiful! I also enjoyed the conversation of breaking up with your phone. Being stuck, just endlessly scrolling, really feels like an out-of-body experience 😵💫. You inspire me to step away digitally and explore/appreciate nature.
Thank you so much!! I’m glad you enjoyed it :) Hope that you can get out and explore some of natures beauty around you soon! Our phones have such a pull, but the trees have a lot to share :)
You're so talented. You can see your passion for the natural world in every page. Making me realise just how beautiful Turtle Island is!

Lovely inspiring video! I think you'd enjoy the TV show Arcane as it plays around with the ideas of nature clashing out with humanity's desire for infinite progress, where hope can still bloom in the unlikeliest of places, no matter how hard things get.
Thank you so much! I will check out Arcane soon. I don't have Netflix, but I've been considering it, and that sounds like a great reason!
As an illustrator, I'm not a fine artist, but I found myself nodding to a lot of what you were saying. The honest truth of these worlds needs to be spoken plainly like this for the benefit of creatives and the public.

Thanks for sharing. It's very inspirational to see you struggle and perserve (and bloom!). I've been having a bad couple of weeks and this video honestly was something I really needed. I'm not an artist but I have dreams I want to pursue and it's encouraging to see others follow their dreams.
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words! I hope that you can use this to pursue, persist, and bloom in your dreams too!
Not joking but you should watch the Berkshire Hathaway meetings that Warren Buffet and Charlie Munger hold for their investors. You're approach of following your passion and money will come naturally has been their mantra advice for people who are focused more on the money than passion. Yes a lot of questions are about investing, but the answers are more general and in the form of a life story and lessons learned. And I think many people will be surprised by them.
Ahhh I’m watching all the videos here and my partner and I are ultralight backcountry backpackers (we live in Seattle and it’s my first year here) and I’ve been dyyyying to bring my stuff but I was scared to bringing extra weight. Tomorrow we are doing regular camping for the first time (with a large tent and a car ⛺️) and I’m trying out the setup you are suggesting since we have day hikes planned! This video made me so excited! 😊 saludos to all the wild art people out there.
Andrea! I just saw this comment (it flew under the radar for me) and I'm really glad this is the video that brought you to the channel and to discord! Hope your car camping trip went wonderfully!
That was so interesting! Thank you for sharing, i love learning about all these ways to make money AND feel fulfilled with art :)
Awesome thank you! So glad to hear you liked this approach! If you use it yourself, lemme know. Navigating and finding that balance is key!
I feel ya, I studied graphic design cause my family wouldn't allow art school (Im Mexican and grew up there so art schools are also rare which I kinda feel grateful now however I actually ended up working as a freelance video editor lol. My dream has always been to be an illustrator and I actually got a clients and got to publish children's toys years ago but maaaaaaaaaaan the illustration market is so competitive and I couldn't just leave my old design job to pursue this passion so at the end I just stopped doing art until maybe 2 years ago when i tried to get back to it. As a freelance video editor I feel a bit more confident now to just do art for my sake rather than as a job. I also completely left social media since It was giving me so much anxiety and frustration to see all this illustration accounts upload SO MUCH content all the time that I just had it. Now I gotta say that as a hobbie or as time off I enjoy making art for the sake of making art and getting in the flow and I can just have a job. And this is ok. Love the channel, I just found it and the content is great! Keep up the good work.
oh wow! Thank you so much! I love hearing stories from folks with similar experiences outside of the US! Glad to hear you are back to making art after feeling really challenged being in a super competitive space! I feel you on that too, Instagram really started getting to me with the comparison bug so I had to stop with reels completely.
Oh, is this a re-upload? Or am I just having deja vu?
Similar title to the one I shared last year but totally new!
shifted the title a bit to clarify a bit better!
I’m just gonna go ahead and like this video right away because I know your stuff and it’s always good!
Awww thank you so much!
It's a little weird how much of art school can be made to sound like a cult. The terminology that only those in the know would know(like, not everyone would know what foundations is). And the hours spent doing endless labor to a mysterious unknown end...
I read a great book last year called Cultish by Amanda Montell and honestly it had lots of language elements to warrant that assessment! I see what you mean for sure. And the deprogramming took a long time
I just found you and I am glad I did! I used to make so much art but liiiife.
@@AndreaRuizCa it’s okay! That will come back around!! Hopefully some of these strategies help!
So many good points here to consider for any Fine Arts students/graduates that want to take the next step into post-grad (primarily for a career move and love of teaching, rather than for the pure curiosity of undertaking an in-depth creative research project). While the University arts education system is perhaps a little different in Australia, there are so many parallels to what you've mentioned. Many of the permanent lecturers (amazing artists/educators of course) simply benefited from just getting in before this mass-casualisation of the academic workforce. A decent percentage of these permanent employees are still in the process of undertaking their terminal degrees (Fine Arts Doctorates in Australia), whilst newcomers are expected to have already have a doctorate, a solid research portfolio, years of teaching experience ,and to be nationally, if not internationally recognised, as established artists before even being considered for an entry-level permanent position. Such extreme career requirements enforce a two-tiered system in Universities, in which the bulk of the teaching staff (casual tutors), are divided from permanent lecturers, who through this delegation, are enabled to maintain a research career and are also relied upon to maintain the system from a more managerial perspective. It's quite a broken, exploitative and horrible way of running art schools (especially for young and passionate educators who sacrifice so much energy for their teaching) and it's also bad for students, whose education would benefit greatly from continuity in an educator's professional development. If still super keen (for Australia/UK at least), get a PhD with a Scholarship attached and begin building a stellar arts research portfolio immediately - it's the only sustainable path into a Fine Arts Higher-Ed career I've identified. Great to hear that you've decided to take another path!
I noticed your average video SEO score is only 10-40, while a score of 60-100 is ideal for ranking well. I specialize in optimizing video SEO-if you’d like some tips, check out my channel description!
Well said!!!! I am wondering about these art institutes. Have they over extended themselves sacrificing their operating budget for capital campaigns? I am asking that being out of touch with the world of art education. Fundraising for a capital campaign significantly differs from fundraising for operations. Also, what is the mindset of the individual and organizational donors who provide endowments? Have they changed their priorities? Perhaps the economic trade cycle had imposed horrific burdens on these institutions since the Great Recession of 2008. Or, perhaps bloated administrative costs have finally choked these institutes and colleges. A friend of mine had attended Bloomington obtaining a masters in the visual arts. A majority graduates in the year before he graduated found faculty positions at universities. When he graduated, not one graduate found a position at a university. Only one of his peers ended up teaching in a junior college. That was back in the mid to late seventies if I recall correctly. The best instructions for the fine visual arts is on a one-to-one basis. Find an accomplished artist whose work you appreciate and arrange to have her or him teach you privately. It will cost but far less than the tuition charged from these well known colleges and institutes.
Apart from professional schools, you are talking about the whole of academia. It is a pyramid scheme of meaninglessness.
its a real bummer. I believe in the work that these folks in academia are doing but i wish it was deeper connected to the realities of the culture at large
