Hi! I tried messaging you on instagram, but it won't let me. I have made some portfolio projcets.. however I was wondering if it would be possible somehow to see your feedback. I made the investment and bought storyline 360.. so I'm all in haha. Hope to hear from you soon!
Question: If I create a course on Articulate 360 (Storyline or Rise) during a free trial, how can I save that course to keep in my portfolio for hiring managers to view and interact with after the free trial expires? Thank you in advance! I love your videos! :)
hi! great question, at the bottom of this article, it says they keep your data for 6months: access.articulate.com/support/article/Articulate-360-FAQs-Free-Trials, so just make sure you have your course link handy. Otherwise, you can download the materials that you've built. You might also want to reach out via their chat functionality to confirm. Just a note - I'd always suggest drafting your content either in a google doc or word doc just in case they do delete your courses after 6 months so you don't have to start over, content-wise. Hope this helps! And thank you for watching!!
@@SamTaylorEd Thanks so much!
Hi Sam, I am a teacher and wanting to transition this year into instructional design. I have been watching your videos and reading other's stories of transitioning out of the classroom. I have been watching video tutorials of the different software used in the field, and feel ready to start making my portfolio. This video makes me feel confident that it doesn't have to require much to show that "quality is better than quantity." Thank you for this insight! Will keep watching and come here to ask you questions.
Hi! Thanks so much for watching! Yes, quality over quantity is the name of the game here! Start with what you have, and try to make it as excellent as you can. And yes feel free to reach out with any questions :)
I’m an Indian educator living in India. I currently teach students all across the globe virtually. I wish to transition to instruction designer role. What courses should I do to learn the skills and are there chances for me to land up to remote job in the US company considering my nationality?
Thats a great question! Consider watching some videos on RUclips about video editing, and then start to practice editing videos for your portfolio. I'd also recommend learning about technical writing via Google: developers.google.com/tech-writing/announcements#schedule. Hope this helps!
Great tips! This might be a controversial tip but if they ask you for a deliverable, send it as a link you retain complete control over it. I am not going to let another company keep my work if I don’t move forward 😂
Yes I totally agree! Gotta keep your hard work for yourself!
Hey, are you still doing phone consultations?
hi! yes I think I replied to your submission on 1/8, please check your email/spam :)
Your content is so great! Fast-forward two years, are there any other skills that you would recommend? Have any of the course authoring softwares become more popular than others?
Thank you!! Yes this is definitely due for a refresh :) I would say the biggest new skill is probably ChatGPT/AI prompting, meaning knowing how to ask ChatGPT how to help you with certain tasks. I actually have a video about using AI as an ID, which might be useful if you're curious! As for course authoring softwares, nothing really sticks out as more popular these days! Hope that helps :D
This video is right on time! I've been procrastinating and putting off developing a portfolio. Now that I am actively interviewing for roles, I regret it. This was the jolt of accountability I needed. Thanks!
Oh yay I'm glad the video can be useful! And good luck with everything, you got this!!!
The best ive seen thus far
Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words!!
I love the bingo card idea! I've been seeing it everywhere on social media just haven't sat down to make one
Thanks so much for watching, Kaylee! Yeah its a fun idea, I did one a few months ago at work for "mindfulness month" and it actually made me do more journaling and therapy than i normally would lol
LOVE IT. Great easy intro to ChatGPT for ISD. Transitioning to ISD full-time and your videos are great. Love your voice too:)
Glad you're finding them useful, and thank you for watching!
Great vid with practical examples! Prepping for an ISD interview and this is helpful:)
Oh awesome, you got this! Good luck with your interview! And thank you for watching!
I'm using a bingo card this year too! How are you incentivizing yourself to get Bingo done? I find that relying on intrinsic motivation for things like this always causes me to fall off lol. I'm thinking of putting away small bits of money to buy myself a new handbag if I complete all the squares. I also recommend printing out your bingo sheet, keeping it somewhere nearby, and using physical stickers to check off the boxes - it's a similar concept to the recipe book idea you mentioned (which I totally agree with!)
Thats a great idea!! Hmmm I think I'll probably do something similar to incentivize, maybe a new book per bingo for me :) And yes I definitely printed mine out, there's something soo satisfying about physically checking off the box! Good luck this year!
This is such a fun idea! I need to do it! My 3 goals: 1. Land a promotion 2. Save $10 k more in a HYSA 3. Lose 10 lbs before March
Those are great goals! What are some small tasks you would add to the Bingo cells to make them happen?
Hey Sam, thank you for introducing me to Google sites and your those two video were really helpful for me for creating the portfolio. Wish you a very happy new year!
Hey! Thank you for the kind words, so glad you're looking into Google Sites now! Happy new years to you as well and thank you for watching!
Are you going to start building your portfolio?! Comment here so we can hold each other accountable :) 🤝
This was right on time. I had an intention of working on a project today (from your 'what to include in your ID portfolio' vid).I opened Canva and then was looking at my screen for many, many minutes. I designed a graphic of a perfect Sunday (nothing to do with ID - but I'm glad I created something today).
I totally feel that! Actually getting started on a portfolio project is honestly the hardest part - though once you start, it gets easier! But sounds like a really cool graphic, what does a perfect Sunday look like for you??
HOW did you know ☺
Haha I know because maybe 8 years ago during winter holiday season was when I also built my portfolio 🤣 you got this!
I built my portfolio this November using Google sites and I am amazed by how simple and powerful it is for a free software! I started applying for LXD roles this December to get the ball rolling for next year because I am ready for the next phase of my career because my current company doesn’t offer much room for growth
Thats so awesome! Great to get ahead. What types of things did you include in your portfolio?
Hi can I do this as a former school psychologist? ❤
Yes definitely! You probably have a lot of great writing and needs analysis experience! Consider building out your LinkedIn profile and starting to create some materials for a portfolio to get started :)
Hi Sam, Many thanks for this. I am a teacher in the UK and I am considering a change in career to become an Instructional Designer. I have taken some time off. What courses would you recommend to develop (and in some cases start) my skills in Adobe Captivate, Premiere Pro and Illustrator? Do you think this is something I can teach myself or should I attend a bootcamp or perhaps even a longer university course?
Thanks for watching! I haven't taken any courses actually. Personally, I instead try to create my own videos using these softwares and then if I am confused by something specific, I find a tutorial on RUclips or a blog! But if you prefer a formal course, I think Skillshare has some great options (not sponsored but have poked around their site). Hope this helps!
Can you please help me with it by appointment that would be greatly appreciated let me know. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! I don't do any consulting/portfolio building at this time, but there are various other tutorials that may also help online!
Clever!! :-)
Thank you!!
Hi! I love your channel, thanks for all you do! I am currently teaching and hoping to transition at the end of the school year. Is this even a reasonable timeline? I have started studying and reading your book and plan to put in time every day. Thanks so much!
Hey! Yes this seems like a reasonable timeline to me. There are lots of things you can accomplish during the school year, especially when it comes to getting your LinkedIn profile, resume, and work experience organized! Consider trying to lead a few extra professional development sessions for fellow teachers or departments, these are great for the resume. Hope this helps - and thanks for watching!
Hii, this was superr helpful. Thank you. However, I thought the actual project built on the authoring tool (articulate) would be linked to the portfolio site.
Thats a great point! I think if you build a project within Articulate there may be an option to embed it within a Google Site! Check this link it might be useful: access.articulate.com/support/article/Rise-360-How-to-Embed-Published-Content-in-a-Web-Page
I have created onboarding trainings for my previous role but how do I include it in my portfolio without giving away company info?? 😊
Thats a great question! One way to do this is to recreate the onboarding trainings but for a "generic" company, meaning create a fictional company and recreate a similar onboarding material for it. Or you can screen record the onboarding training and edit out anything that gives away company name or information. Hope that helps!
I struggle with knowing what is "familiar". The depth of knowledge is wide and deep. Does a YT basics video cut it? Do I need to take an online course? Do I need to get a demo trial of the software? I find this term vague.
I would say being able to use the software to build a small project with it - for example a video editor you should be able to create and edit a short video. Or for a course building software, you should be able to build a minicourse with it. Hope this helps!
Thank you for this video. Found it very helpful.
Sure thing, thanks so much for watching!
Do you worry that AI would take away Instructional Designer jobs? I think I’m interested in transitioning from teaching to instructional design, but I worry about how AI will change the market.
Thats a great question! I definitely do not worry about AI taking away from ID jobs. I use AI as a helper to create certain parts of training content, but it definitely cant do it all, especially without the prompt of an Instructional Designer. It needs an ID to ask it for the right things, and even then, most of the work AI produces needs a lot of reworking in order to get it right. Hope that helps!
How kind your recruiter was!! I never came across such an HR manager...I wish I would in future jobs! Really helpful information. Thanks Sam.
Right?! It was soo amazing! I really hope I can be that person for someone someday :) thanks for watching!
Finally! I've been looking for an interactive course platform that I can use to build my mixology course with!😀
Oooh very cool! You got this!
Thanks for the info!
Sure thing - thanks for watching!
I love how you define one of your goals has to help you reach your quarter goal. Thanks for the tip and leave you a like💜
Yesss its so important - sometimes we need to keep ourselves in mind too :) Thanks for watching!
I love the tips about what should be in the top three! This will be so helpful for me in my work - sharing w the rest of my team. Thanks!
It took a while for me to figure it out, hopefully it will help you and your team! Thanks for watching!!
How do you start your mornings?!
Hi I’m starting the process to become a content creator for MiaPlaza. I think it’s similar to what you are doing. I have 10 years of experience teaching biology at the collegiate level.
Very cool! Yes I think parts of it are super similar - I do a lot of video editing, graphic design, etc!
I LOVE to go to learn at conferences! I want to go to all of them! DevLearn brochure looked great! But unfortunately it's so expensive, more than my prior profession! Are all these conferences over a $1,000?
It is definitely expensive!! That’s why I rarely go to in person conferences but I want to! I think generally online/virtual conferences are more affordable. But Some companies have education stipends or will pay for professional development conferences - something to look into! And you’ve given me an idea to make another short on low cost/free conferences, so thank you!!
@@SamTaylorEd I didn't know about online conferences were cheaper. I'll check that out! In my prior profession, conferences, student rates like $300 and professional were like $600 in person. And I've gone to when they were local to me, I live in a big conference area that many go to! And I went when my job pays for the hotel, conference, etc. So I thought they were prices like that for the 3 days. But I never so shocked when I looked at the DevLearn brochure. I was crushed! I'm just learning ID reading books, watching tutorials, taking free classes, etc. I don't have in my budget like $2,800 to attend a conference, so a low cost option would be great for career changers like me or early career would be ideal! I'm glad that this comment sparked the idea for free or low cost conference!!! Because we need more cost effective events! I love learning in conferences! I imagine that this would be a hit! I look forward to it! 😁
@@SamTaylorEd I think there would be enough ID professional to have a presentation for the credit, notaririty, and another lecture they could put on their resume to speak at you free/ low cost conference.
Thank you for sharing, I will look into these to see which will be most treating for me :)
Which ID conferences are you interested in?!
Thanks for this wonderful insight into instructional design!
Sure thing! Thanks so much for watching!
I did student teaching for one semester but did not pass and i have never formally taught as a teacher. I am still persueing a master's in education as i am currently still in grad school but i do not want to be a teacher anymore and would rather become an instructional designer instead would this be hard to do without any teaching experience?
There's a lot of people that are Instructional Designers without formal teaching experience. I think your Master's and the curriculum you practice building there will provide a great start.
🔥
Bless you so much, I am using this a template on how to focus during this time of transition. 5 skills, one for each day of the work week to focus on 💟
That's a great plan! You got this!!
Thank you for the tips! They're super helpful! I work as a customer support lead for an education company and I've been interested in ID for a while now. I train new hires and I never thought about using the training materials I make to create a portfolio. Would you recommend someone interested in finding an ID job to invest in software like Articulate? (I have never used it before but some job listings require experience with this). Or is there any other software that you recommend?
Hi! Thats awesome to hear, sounds like you have some really transferrable skills for ID! I don't really recommend investing in Articulate, I think you can accomplish a lot by creating a free (or low-cost) website, and then adding projects like videos, blog posts, training outlines/curriculum, and training slide decks. However, if you want to get a bit of experience with Articulate, I'd suggest watching a few RUclips tutorials and then signing up for a 1-2 week free trial to play around and create something using the software. Hope that helps!
And is there any books on how to do a needs analysis. I've done many but in terms of education and I would like to learn needs analysis in the business training world. Is there any templates you follow? I want to do an entire project from beginning to end, so that where I am. Or can you make a video on conducting a needs analysis? Thank you so much, Sam!
Hi! I would say Map It by Cathy Moore (amzn.to/4cAp6xC)) is a great book for this :)
But i am also happy to make a video as well!
Hi Sam! I'm interested in book summaries over each book. Each book sounds very interesting! I'm just starting out my learning journey, but get the idea that those books are for more advanced ID. Is that true? What is the order of books that are more meant for beginners? Thank you for your content! I enjoy it so much!!!!
Hi! Congrats on your new journey! Thanks for the feedback - I'll definitely do summaries as I read them. For beginners, I'd recommend: 1) Map It by Cathy Moore (amzn.to/4cAp6xC) 2) Design for how people learn (amzn.to/3XbY9fm) And I haven't read these yet, but I think they could work for beginners, too! • Kirkpatrick's four levels of training evaluation • How to measure training results Hope that helps!
@@SamTaylorEd ok thank you for the recommendation! The first book I read is Julie Dirkson book, Design for How People Learn. It was really good book! I'll order Map it next! I know you have a book too. I want to get that too! I want to get so many books but I can only read 1 at a time!!! Thank you again for your content!
Thankyou.
Thank you for watching!
