    3:30 saw another one where someone used a puller to separate the ball joint. It appeared that it didn't leave any marks on the arm.

    Thanks very much for this! My roof opened normally then would not close. Read manual, tool was missing to jack up clamshell, but more importantly, there was no screw holding the potentiometer onto the shaft. ......gone. With your video , I identified that there was supposed to be a left handed screw in the shaft. I have ordered the kit thanks to your help, and hopefully will get screw in there and see if I can open clamshell with hex head wrench. Dont know if motor is good, or really what the problem is at this point, it seems the clamshell is latched in the center back preventing opening. of course with the roof open there is no access, even the motor you describe is difficult to get at. Will look today to see if I can remove motor with the clamshell closed. Also that locking mechanism on the shaft is interesting., but without screw holding pot in place it is impossible to access shaft to turn.

    When I took my front wheel bearings off the spindle I noticed there was some thin oil in there, still really clean it kinda looked like motor oil, I didn't know if I needed to oil the inside again with the new bearings, do I need to oil them?

      My car is a 2005 so perhaps they changed it from rivets to screws. You do need to drill out the rivets in the top front which connect to the lock mechanism.

    Ok that's cool. But what about the cable thats connected on the door handle, how do you take it off?

    • @sly59vette
      @sly59vette Год назад

      It will just pop out once you remove the door lock. The door lock is pressing the end of the release cable into the hook on the end of the handle. There is a section of the video where I show the door handle, the cable and the lock and how they fit together.

  • @pmgear
    @pmgear 2 года назад

    Fantastic video, heaps of information, one question, at the end, did you drill the rivets holding the door lock/latch mechanism before removing the window frame? And if so, did you just rivet, or nut rivet, the latch mechanism back? Or are you able to get it out as one piece not removing any pop rivet. Other videos shows drilling the rivets and then upon assembly putting in nut-rivets so you can just bolt it it where the rivets used to be

    • @sly59vette
      @sly59vette Год назад

      You will need to drill out those rivets before removing the window channel. Only with the window channel removed can you remove the door lock mechanism. I did put in new rivets upon reassembly.

    How did you remove the track? I used an allen wrench through the hole but I don't see how that becomes disattached.

    • @sly59vette
      @sly59vette Год назад

      The goal with the allen wrench, or small screwdriver, is to push the tab (mounted to the window frame) in so that it releases the screen channel. As such you should push on the tab and pull out on the channel at the same time. Start from the bottom and work towards the top.

  • @joeguerra6044
    @joeguerra6044 3 года назад

    Slightly cleaner/easier method. Do what you say about grinding/drilling the rivets on the top (backplate of ball joint). Get ball joint off. Grind the rivets flush to both sides of the a-arm. Youll notice the bottom has a larger diameter. This is because the bottom of the rivets is tapered. Take a center punch and hammer, get the a-arm on a solid surface and hammer down on the smaller diameter end (NOT the tapered end of the rivets). I've done numerous this way and provides the best results. Its extremely hard to keep a drill centered on the rivets; it will inevitably walk and start chewing into the aluminum of the a-arm.

    • @larrybud

      A still better option would be to press the rivets out, but I agree, don't drill them out!

  • @peterpurol7873

    I was wondering: Could the steel rivets be pressed out with the ball joint press? Hmmm...

    • @sly59vette
      @sly59vette Год назад

      Perhaps. This car drove in many Iowa winters to the salt fused the rivets to the a-arm.

    What is torque specifications for the bolts (and nuts) attaching the upper ball joint? I'm very confused about torque specifications on those bolts. How many Ft-lbs did you use? In Haynes Manual it says: "Tighten the bolts to the torque specified in the new balljoint instruction sheet". Mine doesn't have any instruction sheet. I found statement on one forum "The instructions supplied with my MOOG upper ball joints stated 12-14 ft.-lbs for the bolts and nuts." My suspension kit is not MOOG, it is OCPTY - New 8-Piece fit for 1995-2005 for Chevrolet Cavalier - 2 Front Lower Ball Joint 2 Sway Bar 2 Outer 2 Inner Tie Rod End. In one film (but it was a Chevy truck) the author applied 50 Ft-lbs. My car is 2003 Chevy Cavalier, just one control arm. Thank you for the informative film.

    I think you have made my day sir!!! The door latch replacement came to a screeching halt when we could not actually remove the latch assembly because “something” was holding it. Our first thought was the key lock piece that attaches to the latch mechanism, but I now see the small cable sandwiched between the key lock and the door handle. Looks like we have the disassembly figured, the reassembly looks like “fun” too. BTW the door is still on the car!
