His voice didn't change. His singing style changed. He stopped singing with lots of strain because he got tired of wearing his voice out, injuring himself, or straining himself. It kind of weirds me out that so few realize this. Sometimes he'll still shout and sing-scream, but mostly he sings extremely healthily now, and it doesn't sound as good, sad to say. But it's his voice and he doesn't want to have to recover and deal with hurting it anymore. Why should he? He's given us decades. EDIT: and just before someone points out he did the scream in 2018, that kind of screaming is NOT the same kind that, for example, Kurt Cobain did, and Serj did early in his career in the parts shown here (the true vocal folds "screaming"; as opposed to metal screaming, which doesn't use them). Pig squealing, metal screaming, etc, that uses different parts of the vocal apparatus. If you do it right it does not harm you the same way heavy singing does. He doesn't sing heavily anymore because he doesn't want to deal with the maintenance and recovery that requires.

Man just the fact that his voice, after so much pushing from 85-92, it lasted as long as it did is amazing. Personally I m a fan of both worlds and now compared to others he sounds just fine.

I think his voice aged perfectly compared to other metal vocalist. HIs raspy voice fits the songs and he can still sing softly. The only thing I think they should've done is tune down so his voice fits the vibe more, kind of like what Megadeth did. Dave Mustaine's voice got low and raspy so to go aside with that they tuned down. That's the only thing I think Metallica should have done.

He sings the notes rather than screaming them, and does so in a manner that will preserve his voice rather than blowing it out.

the problem started at 1:38 when they decided to change the first 3 album's songs 1/2 tune up to match with the tuning of "mesmerize & hypnotize"(Daron's idea?). Other bands just change the guitar and bass on stage to play songs with different tuning, but SOAD made it wrong from 2005 to 2011. So Serj began to pressure his vocal chords to reach the notes from the songs, that originally were recording between his "safe vocal range". After 2004-2005, the sang high, high and the screaming mixed voice was gotten lost across the time. Then we get a totally nasal voice. Maybe the things that i am talking about are ridiculous or nonsense, but Serj's Voice was strong and powerfull (and ellegant when he sans in whisper mode too) until 2003. after that year it's not SOAD for me anymore ;C sorry for mi shitty english xD

even through the early years you can hear his voice slowly making it's way from a back of his throat closer towards the head resonator, but then he figured out how to hit those notes cleanly and stopped screaming all the way through the lyrics, just highlighting some of them - and in my opinion, it's even better this way

It was never a matter of if Serj was able or not able to pull off the vocal performance he had in the past, he simply doesn't want to do it, and he has the artistic ability and liberty to choose what vocal style works best for what he wants to express. I think a possibility for him in the future would be to dial some of the more aggressive vocals in a carefully selected matter, kind of like what he has done in live shows.

everyone keeps saying he might have damaged his vocals before but you gotta remember serj is not just another random metal or punk singer. he is very skilled and careful with how he sings and how he keeps his voice in such good condition. tbh I think he just got tired of the sound. he had a pretty similar voice through out most of soad's discography and as one of the most artistic people I can think of I think he really did justt want to do something different. if you do art for as long as he has even doing vocals in the same style can get tedious and boring. now I do think age also played a part as no one keeps the same sound or vocal range as they go from their late 20's to their elder years but I don't think that was the main reason for the change. with soad I don't really think it fits so much but with his solo stuff it's beautiful and I think that's probably another reason why he changed his style. he didn't want to do the same stuff he did in soad.

He never lost if but afaik he doesn't like to do it because he wasn't into it like the other members that's why in their later years their songs highlighted his voice more and the way he like to sing it. They were doomed from the start, he wasn't as passionate to their style compared to the other members but as they said it's not the fault of one member as they can always have a workaround and maybe change their overall style but that is risky and they chose to end it at their best and go down without a song hated by their fans.
