Burgess and his Bike

Hey guys, welcome to the channel of an average cyclist/new dad that is seeing his relationship with cycling shift.

Recently deleted Rouvy, the real life videos were great but as a platform i found it dull, boring & bereft of other riders.
I did think twice about downloading the app when I realised it was a UAE company,I have yet to use it though. You are correct,we should be aware of sportswashing,it seems to be getting bigger and bigger. One example is the English Premier League allowing the Saudi Regime to purchase Newcastle United FC. There were some rumblings in Parliament about this, but the UK government supplies the Saudi regime with weapons and the use of RAF engineers to maintain their airforce whilst the Saudis bomb Yemen. Our government then sends aid to Yemen. Go figure! My thoughts are there will be many decent people working at MyWoosh in order to earn a living. The world is a crazy place with many contradictions and different regimes working together to benefit themselves, sometimes justified, sometimes not. It’s the way the world has always worked ,unfortunately.
When will we get a Mario Cart race mod to these apps?
You racing in the DIRTy Sprockets Smash 4 week series on Tuesdays?
Tuesdays are normally my outdoor chop so it’s a no for me, but yeah. IV is OP for racing. I’m on MyWhoosh atm for the training programs.
@@burgess_and_his_bike FriYay series is great too! And the upcoming stage races, IndieVelo Grand Tour & Heroica 3
Now we are talking!! IndieVelo is the best platform by far
Have buyed on November 2023. But have problem wz microphone. During phone calls the other part can not hear me. !!! Any solution or recommendation is highly appreciated. Peace
Have you downloaded the app and checked out the settings? Otherwise I know Shokz in Australia are super responsive on the socials. Maybe try your region?
@@burgess_and_his_bike Not possible in Turkey to use the app. Have claimed before but nothing changed.
Unfortunately, the app is not available for download in my region.
That’s a rho not a “p”
Pardon brother?
Haha I get you now. Let you in on a secret. Chat GPT all the way on that algorithm. I did basic maths in my senior years haha.
I aint a roadie, but I enjoyed that. It rises from the ashes, and returns to dust. Pheonix and Coasters will be missed 🤟
Thanks man. Absolutely. A hole in the community.
Cool video but a strobe lighting warning would have been nice on this video...
Where’s the strobe? Bit of janky lighting in the shop I guess
I see what you mean. Bike lights. Got it. Good advice.
😢😢 Well completed, sad to see it go! Thanks ❤
Great event for a great shop. Sorry too
Cancelled Zwift AND Rouvy. Liking MW but hoping indievelo can accomodate me with Apple TV because I'd like to try it.
😂
nice vid 🙂
Thanks mate ❤️
Northern Rd is one of my favourites nowadays. I ride it from the other end.
Yeah it’s a gem isn’t it. Such a good road for safe training.
Wow This video wow ❤❤❤❤
Thank you my dude
how are you playing the gb games on the laptop? are you holding a controller and sitting upright or resting yoru hands on the handlebars somehow?
I tried both. Neither are heaps comfortable for a long time sadly. Maybe with the new zwift remote🤷♂️
This one's a ripper. Stopped it after a minute to get a coffee. That's big praise, btw.
Haha thanks mate, appreciate it. Had a great time on the ride and enjoyed putting this together. A different style, but I think I'll work on this.
The only problem I have with My Whoosh is no sound when riding, I like hearing the crowd cheer as I'm struggling up a hill.
Agree with this. Don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone. Never cared on Zwift.
Oof sleek kicks brotha!
Thanks cuz 😉
The CIA of usa are far worse than the UAE most likely. All they do is overthrow governments, start wars and assassinate people. Corruption is everywhere, dont die on that hill.
I agree. I guess the difference is that the US is a liberal economy as opposed to the UAE where this is really government controlled. Still, I can’t fight every battle hey.
@@burgess_and_his_bike the powerful do whatever benefits them most, might as well just do the same. I'm still on zwift at the moment but if it gets stale I'll be straight over to my whoosh no doubt.
good video homie. from your boy in Athens, I think the most important one is to ride with confidence, ride the lane, don't just sit as tight to the curb as you can. and if you ride with confidence you ride predictably which will only help drivers know what you are trying to do. Other than that i guess all your points are valid if you aren't confident. Never used a radar because I don't see the need but again, for those that do and it helps them, awesome. for sure lights, even though i only run mine in low light and at night, but i'll dispute the bright clothing one until the bogan gives you space on the road, if a driver can't see a cyclist they should hand in their licence, theoretically based on this argument pedestrians should need to don a neon vest to cross the road, it makes no sense to me, if thats a valid reasoning i want all cars to have a neon speed stripe from hood to trunk too. But you know me, i'm here being a troll ;)
The arguments are an absolute joke. It’s ridiculous and I agree with you, but you gotta do what you can to stay safer.
My thoughts exactly. Way too close to the door zone as well.
Nice one. I use two rear lights - one flashing (magene radar taillight) & one steady (clips on to jersey). The flashing light draws attention, the steady light "'clarifies" my position on the road (in theory).
Yep. The flashing light is also hard to tell depth with so cars can struggle to see how far ahead you are so a solid light helps there.
I spoke to come cops (here in Queensland) on one occasion after a completely unnecessary close pass while exiting a small roundabout. The cops confirmed that without video or photo evidence of an incident there's not much they can do as it's your word against the driver. They'll visit them and ask for the driver's side of the story if you complain loudly, but unless the driver says or does something stupid to incriminate themselves or offend the cop nothing's going to happen other than maaaaaybe a warning. I do resent the idea that I should have to spend hindreds of dollars on a camera so the cops can identify the arsehole who killed me. But I guess it's like any form of insurance. You begrudgingly pay for it and hope you never need to rely on it.
Yeah you can resent it, I do too, but that won’t change minds or keep you alive sadly 😓
I recently bought the Knog Mid Cobber front and rear lights to add to my small, but bright flashers front and rear. Knog is a bit pricey, but these babies provide 330deg arc of light so you can be seen from the side, eg, intersections and during an overtake, as well as directly in front and behind.
Can’t put a price on safety out there.
From another burgo on a bike, I believe the dark clothing is one of the biggest issues with visibility now days. A small front/rear light doesn't cut it when it is dark. Why did the industry think a black jersey would be ok at night???
I think the industry follows the market and it is more fashionable to have less vibrant colours at the moment. In the 80s you’d see cyclists a k away!
This would have to be the most common misconception and, to be frank, just plain without thought. You honestly believe the entire cycling industry hasn’t worked out that visibility is important……seriously?!?! The reason why black is the most common colour for cycling clothing is because it is scientifically proven that brighter colours make no difference at all. It’s just nonsense to suggest otherwise and giving a false sense of security. What does make you visible at night is reflective panels and strips, and they are most visible on black clothing. Reflectors will light up a dark road at night, not bright colours. Same applies to cyclists.
Good tips...agree with you that 99% of drivers are fine it's the small minority that are oblivious or ambivalent about the vulnerability of non motorist road users. Even worse though is the bravado and hate that social media affords the (often) anonymous voices. I can only hope that these keyboard warriors don't follow through with action when they are behind the wheel of their vehicle
Yep I agree. It’s exhausting.
Great advice dude 👍👍🚴🏻pete 👍🚴🏻
Thanks brother
My Garmin Varia is one of the best pieces of gear ive ever bought! Helps me anticipate the potential dickheads.
Haha gotta anticipate those flops.
Briefly mentioned Trainer Road which i subscribed for a year. After 4 months and planning for a goal event which was a race in the hills i was dropped on the first climb. TR just didn't simulate hill climbs in their training. After going back to zwift training plans for a few months i got a PB on an outdoor climb so I'll not go back to TR. The lack of graphics also demotivated me
Yeah the lack of visuals didn’t grab me either. It’s also not cheap for a training platform that doesn’t provide you a direct coach. I know people that swear by it, but I’m not convinced. That being said, I’ve never tried it. Congrats on the PB!
What about FulGaz app have you try it?
Top vid! Keep it up
Thanks dude, appreciate it!
Firstly, thanks for putting the time into the review. You've nailed a lot of key points. I am a Rouvy user and have picked the platform over Zwift and stuck with it. When I first started, I did find it hard to find races or group rides with enough riders to make it engaging. Obviously, some people do workouts, but also there are SO MANY routes that I believe a lot of the users are spread out amongst those routes. If you want to "just ride", you'll likely find a lot of people on the challenge routes, and the route panel shows the number of riders currently on a route (which may help you decide). I did find that most people organize their rides OUTSIDE the Rouvy platform; either with IRL groups than plan rides in the off-season, or with Rouvy groups like GRC and Muckers (who responded here)... and ROuvy has enrolled these groups to label their Races as "Official". This said, once you find a group, there's usually a regular cadence or schedule. Otherwise, "Official" races occur on a schedule, and I learned that the most active users seem to be on European time, and you're most likely to get good turnout in the off-season. Also, it is not a racing platform; i.e., there are no rankings or seasons, etc. For me, I think this is fine... it's competitive enough once you find a group to keep it interesting and fun... people take it seriously... but not too seriously.
Rouvy question. When you finish one of the routes does it show a mark or something that it is completed? I prefer to ride alone somewhere different every day but don’t want to keep a spreadsheet of the routes I’ve done. Thanks!
Super good question and all I can say is “not that I noticed” though that doesn’t help much.
Following these on the gram made my tour this year even better. Just watched now and still loving them dude. Well done mate
Thanks brother ❤️
Great vid bruz :)
Thanks my friend 🤙
Love to see a virtual bike game on the new unreal engine. That would be sweet. It would just add to the immersion
That’d be rad, but I don’t reckon they will because a good portion of zwifters would not have an engine that can run it. It’s a fine line between good graphics and speed and frame rate. Can’t have a glitchy simulator
Gostei mais do mywhoosh, porem indievelo é mais leve para meu pc

If youre an Aussie do you love Taj Farrant the 15 year old blues guitar god? He is Stevie Ray reincarnated! Will an Stages SC3 smartbike work usingmywhoosh or indievelo? I like free stuff. For the coming winters old man training.
I don’t see any reason why not. Both support Ant+ and Bluetooth connection so you should be golden. As for Taj, never heard of him, but I’ll chuck him on for a listen.
@@burgess_and_his_bike Never heard of TAJ? H'e played on stage with Santana, Orianthi, ZZ top, and more. Some say he will be remembered as the greatest blues/rock guitarist ever born. He's just finioshed his third tour around USA. Check out "Sad Rock Ballad".
I'm an older man and just want to use mywhoosh along with a Stages SC3 for this winter here at home. Will it work? I'm a cheapass and I hate any monthly bills.
Hey mate, if you’ve got a lower power machine I’d go IndieVelo instead. It runs on more and is pretty good. Did a video of that on the channel too
What have you made of fulgaz?
Haven’t tried it. I understand it is similar to rouvy
"5 wins, 5 WINS ..." ... you clearly didn't count on Tadej on the final TT stage 😂
I didn’t. Look, my kids are sick and I’m running on about 8 hours sleep over three days alright. It’s amazing I can even count.
@@burgess_and_his_bike That sounds awful, been there myself not long ago. Hope the children are getting better soon. What do you think? Is he going for a gold at the Olympics and then the red jersey (with 5 ... or 6 stage wins) at the Vuelta?
@@mumblecake251 I think he’s being genuine when he says he won’t do the Vuelta. As for the Olympics, in his current form I think he could win anything but he’d have to do it by himself. Rogliç won’t work for him and no one else will now, particularly after the way he rode this tour.
@@burgess_and_his_bike I don't give him much chance of winning the Olympic road race. As you said, no one will work for him ... in the contrary, they will all be teaming up to deny him. Time trial however he's got a shot I think. Following that (purely hypothetically) if he had got a gold, could he resist the temptation to attempt history. Not only has the Grand Tour tripple never been done in one year ... but to add an Olympic medal into the mix would raise this to completely different heights. Totally hypothetical of course but assuming for a second that he gets a gold and still feels in good shape I recon he's going to give it a shot in Spain.
@@mumblecake251 well I just saw that he’s been ruled out of the Olympics so that’s gone haha
Amazing series mate, can't wait to see how you navigate the femmes 😂 Also keen for this to continue on through to other tours, world champs and Olympics 💪🥇
Thanks mate. Excited to see where it goes.
Yup just buy Caden wheels. I cannot recommend these things enough, serviceability, price & performance. There's really no other brand that can compete.
Good insights. Btw: About the Shokz cable issue. I got some little USB-C-to-Shokz convertors you can use to turn any USB-C cable into a Shokz cable. They've got tiny lanyards on them, so I can use a mini zip tie to attach one to a USB-C cable, and it there when I need it. Keep one in your saddle pack and you'll never run out of juice. I got mine off AliExpress, and i think I paid US$5.0 for three of them. Cheers
Thats awesome!
I dropped in on the MyWhoosh vid, came back for IndieVelo. I'm using both, and they're PBG - pretty bloody good! Subbed! Cheers
Agreed dude. A good mix.
Forgot to mention that Rouvy also has several route partnerships such as the vuelta, challenge triathlon and pedalitaly so you can try official race routes from grand tours, world championships etc.
Yeah it does and that's pretty cool. I just find that riding on those routes without people along the course is actually kinda drab, but that's me. I've been spoilt in the hypo world of Zwift.
@@burgess_and_his_bike if you have the time, sign up a free account and join us on Sunday morning at 9.15am for The Muckers race, or at 3.15 Sunday afternoon for the GRC race. The afternoon race tends to have more as the route is always easier. Obviously not hundreds like zwift but enough to form groups and create breakaways etc. would be great to see you there .
The muckers races Sunday morning and a few evenings plus the Sunday afternoon grc races are the most popular. Grc tend to be shorter flatter whilst muckers are often mountains. Tourmalet, zoncolan, plateau de beille etc. Race stats upload to Rouvy site after everyone has finished. The different bikes make a difference depending on the type of route and there are a lot of wheels to choose from. Ghost riders and avatars of previous riders are available. Kudos stuff is available now and maybe in game chat is on the way. I stream a lot of races if it helps give people an idea, as does team GRC in the pinned comment.
Doing indoors again and tried mywhoosh and i liked it. Not gonna pay for something that im gonna use for like 2-3x a week and i only need something to spin down on rainy days. Also i dont even look at the game itself im watching netflix or youtube when indoors lol So mywhoosh being free is a win for me :)
I'm sick and tired of the "sportswashing" narrative. Arabs deserve at least sliver of the slack given to the Europeans. I mean, why should we cry "sportswashing" whenever anything good comes out of the Arab Peninsula when the entire fucking European continent is able to wash away CENTURIES of colonialism, racial based slavery, human rights violations and war crimes? I mean, how long ago was that?
Dude, you're not wrong. Still, everyone should strive to be better.
@@burgess_and_his_bike should and should are concepts from the idealistic world. In the world that we habitate, however, someone else is playing by the "Epitome of Civilization Rulebook, Western Edition". What happens next? Well, westerners are losing their shit because right now, someone else is winning in the game that they invented.
Indievelo is hands down the best indoors cycling app at the moment, be it racing or group riding! It's physics engine blows Zwift and other away!
