A Frugal Homestead
США
Добавлен 15 янв 2020
Welcome!! We are James and Chelsea, amateur homesteaders with our little rugrats. You'll find us here learning to farm, nurture and enjoy our 10 acres near the Owyhee mountains in Idaho. We didn't set out to be homesteaders, but life in the city wasn't what we thought it would be. Plus, we wanted our children to learn and grow out in the open. In 2015, we purchased a home on a 10 acre lot in a little known town in Idaho. Our goal was to create a more self-sufficient life for ourselves and our family. Each year we learn a little more, grow and little more and become just a little more self-sufficient. We've had our ups and downs, but overall, we love our life! We are excited you want to join in our journey.

I have been told you can not use the seeds from inside incase they cross polinate and produce gourds? can you advise please
We have always saved our squash seeds. We have had some cross pollination in the past but we tend to keep different squashes separated. Unless you're planting a large variety of different squashes in the same space, you should be fine to save your seeds and use each year.
@@afrugalhomestead thank you.
Thanks for sharing. I love that you are turning what most people see as waste into another meal basically.
It is a great way to prevent food waste. We use it a lot.
Where do you get the bags
We got them on Amazon. Here's the link: amzn.to/3KYIpWJ
I would definitely like it if I received a box of goodies like that! Enjoyed the video.
Thank you for watching 🧡
Also did you dilute yours at all? The few people that did have success greatly diluted theirs.
We did not dilute it. Just straight juice. No extra sugars, water or flavoring.
What settings do you have your freeze dryer on? I've never seen anyone have success with Apple or citrus juice and I don't want to have a fail like them! TYIA
I just used the regular freeze dryer settings. I did put it back in for another maybe 4 hours of drying. You do not want it to be sticky.
Hi How much time last in shelves? Blessings
Typically they are best before 2 years. We usually drink all of ours in about a year because we have juice every Sunday.
Cool!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Could you pour these into deodorant tubes and use in that way? When you mention they are rather soft, I was wondering if that would cause it not to work in the tubes.
@@tiffanywillhelm1407 that's a great idea. I think they'd work really well that way.
What are some of your favorite recipes to use the chicken in?
@@HamishYeti they work great in soups like chicken noodle or in rice dishes. You can rehydrate them before or add a bit extra liquid to the dish and rehydrate during cooking.
Skittles pop finally putting you outta business expensive af for no reason
@@reese2038 luckily this isn't our main source of income. Just a fun addition to our homestead operation. 😁
How much grape juice can be extracted from one kilogram of grapes?
Depends a lot on the grape. Usually it is about 1 c. of juice per pound, give or take.
Did your pipes freeze?
@@HamishYeti In these temperatures, the pipes in the pump house start to freeze and then we just kind of have that trickle of water. But as soon as we get our heater on and the pump house everything is usually good. It's just so cold.
@afrugalhomestead our's froze over last year when the high was 14 degrees. We were without water for three days. No fun at all.
do you know what the settings are for freeze drying stuff like squashes and skittles?
We have a great video on making Frittles ruclips.net/video/sVVIZfNBWws/видео.html Not sure on squashes. We've not tried those. My guess would be using 135/140° for 2 hours. Taffy takes a some good heat to puff up.
Thank you for sharing 😊
Glad you enjoyed the video.
Another great video
Thanks for watching
Dinty Moore's got nothing on A Frugal Homestead!
Thanks 😁
I like the tomato paste powder idea. This was an informative video. Keep them coming.
We love trying to use up as much of our harvest as we can.
Freeze dried cotton candy sw taffy is the God of sweets
I would agree. Better than just eating regular Taffy
Yea because strangers are way more important than family!! She definitely puts money over family
Teaching others how to use their freeze dryer and potentially making an income from home, is rewarding for our family. And since it is a family business, we are putting our family first. But we appreciate you trolling us 😀
???????
Horrible at explaining 😂😂 well horrible at speaking in general😂
you linked a 5.9x 8.6 mylar bag size. those ones fit 5-6 of the freeze dried jolly ranchers?
@@BridgetEdwards-l8b most of the Mylar bags only fit for about six to eight Freeze dried jolly ranchers. Unless you get the really big Mylar bags. You might have to try a few different sizes to see what works for you.
what is the measurement size for the small bags you used for these skittles? are they 4x6 or smaller?
I get the 4x6 for the smaller size (pink/blue). I usually put 3oz in these.
How much money or freeze dryers
@@Xmaskid1 depends on the freeze dryer brand, size and if you shop in store or have to have it delivered. We have a large Harvest Right. You can check them out through our affiliate link: affiliates.harvestright.com/idevaffiliate.php?id=1991&url=287
German? We don't know IT 🤔
Maybe as a tip: I would put the glasses on the second shelf on turntables or in boxes. This way they would be clearer and easier to access
@@ManuelaGoebel-Klicek that's a great idea. Thanks for sharing
It's always nice to start the holiday season with a clean and tidy home. Not to mention knowing where the snow gear is before the first storm.
Very true. Plus it is ready for all those guests coming to town 😀
Dinner in a pumpkin! What a great tradition!
It's one of our favorites 🎃
It's been years since I've had a pumpkin dinner. So good.
You'll have to put it on your fall menu.
I’ve never even heard of a juice steamer. Wow!!
@@jackijax505 it will change your life. Makes juicing for canning so simple.
I'd be picking the best leaves first for pickling but then I like dolma😊
@@alanb2325 there were definitely great leaves for picking and cooking. 😀
Hello, I was wondering if your griddle is cast iron or nonstick? A lot of the English muffin videos I watch show people using cast iron but I want to use my nonstick ceramic griddle to save time..
@@brooklynringer this one is nonstick. It works great with no problems. You should be just fine.
Have you dried potatoes to make potato salad? Raw, blanched or boiled? Have you baked potatoes, chopped them and freeze dried? Thesse roasted potatoes look delicious!
@@ETTEWSMILE We have done raw potatoes and we've done baked potatoes that we made into potato powder for putting in soups or making mashed potatoes. Both have come out great. We also shredded baked potatoes to make hash browns. And they work but they crumble really easily. So I would say stick with baked potato and chunks or grinding it up into a powder.
Love a full pantry!
Thank you. We are enjoying it as well!
Berapa ? bi Yaya kirim telur merpati donek,ke indonesia?
Can you open up door to check on them?
@@cathiburton8402 you can at the end of the cycle. Otherwise you have to stop the vacuum freeze in the middle of the process and that slows everything down. If they aren't done at the end, you can add more dry time.
She's so cute ❤
She really is. We love her 🧡
What a great looking dog. My kids said they want to go to your house to play with her.
@@HamishYeti they're welcome anytime 😀
I like your drying rack for your onions! What a great idea! You are an inspiration! Thank you!
Glad we could offer some inspiration. Just trying to use what we have on hand. It worked great. Thanks for watching.
Would it be ok to dry the seeds in an oven at 350 for 5 minutes to make it quicker?
@@gayanemarkaryan7658 putting them in the oven would kill the future germination of the seed. If you just want to eat them, you can bake them. If you are saving for next year, they need to be air dried.
Oh my gosh that puppy wants to be all over his mama 🥰❤️
@@fiamasoe987 she is definitely a "helper"
Beautiful potatoes. For longest storage air dry and brush off the access dirt, don’t wash. Keep in a cool dark place. Cute puppy❤
@@hollyshobbies1050 Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching
Go Broncos
🧡💙
Do you add a simple syrup to the jars?
Yes. We make a medium syrup with a 1 to 2 ratio of sugar and water.
I love sunflower🌻🌻🌻
@@kemanne3382 crazy how big they get
Great video. I love the portable coop idea!
@Brinerjp Also a fantastic idea!
It is super handy
That electric door is a fantastic idea!
It saves us time and keeps those chickens protected.
Do you prefer white or purple?
@@HamishYeti we don't really have a preference. Purple adds a lot of color to the pantry but they both taste so yummy.
Bye 👋
👋👋
We had a ton of blueberries this year. My wife made a lot of jam and compote. Blueberries have to be my favorite, but blackberries are a close second.
That sounds super yummy. Always so great to make homemade jams and jelly.
