With the release of the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo needed a big title to launch before the holidays in order to rack in the cha-chings for the season. I love the brawl renaissance that’s been happening recently
what's with the random jab at esam during the pikachu segment?
as someone who loves pretty much every mario kart game and spent alot of time in time trials i do agree the grand prix mode in wii is the absolute F....ng Worse.
bro started playing drake in the meta knight segment
2:04:30 Amsa saw that brawl made yoshi shield 🥚🛡️ into missteir Game & ⌚️’s shield♟️🔵🚫 from melee and said “yah no im cool of that” and put all the time and energy into the good yoshi smash games 😊
An absolute unit of a vid 💯 I especially loved the ness chapter 😆
This video game was my childhood back in 1999 🏁🏎👍🎮😁
Can’t wait for Coney to react to this one.
The fact that Meta Knight, Ice Climbers and Captain Olimar are the 3 best characters shows us that size, indeed, doesn't matter
Actually they prove that size DOES matter, quite a bit actually
@Clover298 i mean you'd expect that big powerful brutes would be on top and then the little guys be at the bottom but it's basically the other way around
Coney needs to watch this movie i think
Been waiting years for a documentary on ssbb and what an amazing 3 hours it all is. The original thumbnail is better than new one though.
For a pretty one sided meta, I was astonished in how in-depth this was. Thank you to all who worked on this documentary 🔥🔥🔥
1:05:53 With regard to Yui doing crazy in Japan contributing to his way higher placement on the Japanese Brawl Tier List? According to Mew2King's own words in his & Salem's Brawl Tier List video, when M2K was traveling to Japanese Brawl Tourneys during Brawl's lifespan, Yui wasn't the *only* Brawl Fox player doing insane things over there. He said he got to play against MULTIPLE *insanely talented* Japanese Fox players going absolutely NUTS in Japan. Not just Yui. I suppkse Yui was just the omly one of those players who's documented to have actually traveled *outside* of Japan, so he's more known. Furthermore, I suppose Fox in general was just a VERY popular pick over there. It makes me lowkey curious if there may have been certain things about Fox that they discovered in Japan that the US simply didn't discover, or if they simply value different aspects of the game greater or lower compared to the US, or perhaps even a mixture of both. Did the US simply underestimate how good of a character Brawl Fox truly was (or rather, *is* since clearly people are still playing Brawl to this very day)? Did the US grossly overrate Pikachu? I don't know for sure, but regardless if I were to actually get into current competitive Brawl *super seriously* tbh? I'd likely find myself dual maining Fox & Falco (there was a limited time like a year or two ago where me and one of my cousins rabdomly decided to play Brawl against each other through a more competitive lense, and the character he played most often was ROB, while the characters I gravitated toward were Fox & Falco).
1:21:51 Ooh. Cringe. ;( Really tasteless and mostly undeserved shade being thrown here that would've been understandable like, 3 or 4 years ago, but definitely not now. Every community's got some trace of villainy in it. Dragging down all the competitive players for the crimes of a very small portion of them is not cool.
23:00 🤓
Oh, one thing you ought to keep in mind is Lucario's fsmash is bonkers in this game. It has a huge conic hitbubble, capable of stuffing out even stuff like Marth fair, has deceptive IASA frames at the end, has a transcendent hitbox at the far center of it, and it lingers quite a bit. It got worse as a tool once people got better at playing safe, but there was a reason Azen picked up this character early in Brawl's lifetime and transferred his Marth fsmash reads to the character. Force Palm had some interesting stuff, early in Brawl's meta it used to be considered a busted chaingrab to tack on 40% on most characters because it hardly sent anyone far at low aura. But for some reason it was coded to be mashable like a regular grab so you can easily break out after the first one, so it became a fake chaingrab. Then Lucario players realized you could buffer the start of the force palm animation in the air so that when you landed, you were grabbing the opponent on the earliest frame the grounded grab hitbox came out. Conveniently, this was the height of a fullhop/sh dj dair on shield, which made for a great punish on someone who blocked your dair at high %s. Some other things: -Fox was sick. Glad someone mentioned he is a sleeper counterpick character especially against MK esp on neutral stages. There's a reason Isic Strans says "TKD ain't mad" in "Metaknight da bes", he was known for terrorizing West Coast MKs like Tyrant when he came up from Tijuana. -The biggest liability to GnW's air game is just how much Brawl's SDI messed with multihits. It was hinted at with nair, but the most egregious is bair. Most characters can just mash up on the control stick and punish GnW with an aerial unless they drift and space it very far, and then it's losing a lot of its damage potential. Praxis was infamous for teaching everyone how to unravel half of GnW's air game because he played one of the top GnW players (Valdens) all the time. -ROB also had a very rough matchup against ZSS too because ZSS has a dsmash footstool infinite that only worked against ROB. -DK had a similar feature to Wario in that his punch had more knock back when not fully charged. In particular, the nickname "9 wind" referred to the number of times he'd wind his arm up while charging to get the best knock back. He also has incredible jank on his upB on Yoshi's Island. You had a clip of it in action, but if you ledge drop-> double jumped and used Spinning Kong immediately on the ground, you maintained invincibility through the entire move's duration.
@@ph1lny3 Yeah I kind of snuffed a bit of Lucario's segment when beginning to wrap up the final draft so apologies if his segment was more brief and just quickly covering the basics more than focusing on it. Thanks for sharing this information though!
@LuigiLitoLL Much love for this. Brawl was the game I got competitive in, and I'm glad it's seeing some love on YT. It was such an experimental game, and stuff like Pit arrow loops, Link jump cancel bomb tosses, etc all made the game accidentally flavorful. Oh and Brawl 2v2 was goated.
Hell yeah brother💪 it was a blast to work on this with ya
Brawlternative has been real quiet ever since this dropped
So, I'm only two hours into the video, but I have to say that not only is it interesting to see how every character performed in Brawl, but the documentary was funny at the same time. I hope you make more videos like this!
Mario kart double dash is the gta 4 of mario kart games
Idk if brawl meta knight is better than melee fox, maybe relative to the cast but if the two went head to head idk
@@Vaporwavelol it all simply comes down to their respective engines, and in that case I do think Meta Knight holds the win, maybe not by a mile but also not by a hair. (Assuming Meta Knight keeps his physics and isn't accustomed to play like as if he were in Melee)
@@LuigiLitoLL I think they would both have there respective mechanics, so for example fox can still wavedash but if metaknight hits fox he has shorter hitstun
@@Vaporwavelol wouldn't meta knight have shorter hitstun in that case? Since he works like how he would in Brawl, meta knight would be able to air dodge 14 frames out of hitstun, whereas since fox is kept as if he played in Melee, he would suffer through the amount of hitstun dealt as in Melee.
@@LuigiLitoLL oh yeah sorry I got it backwards

Can't wait for your mario golf tier list!
I'm glad to finally see some Brawl Toon Link content, especially with it being positive!
Wait, THEY MADE A 9TH TIER LIST?!??!🎉
Daboose instead of Dabuz, Lineier instead of Linear. The video is cool man but damn do your friends not know how to talk the pronunciations are wack through the whole video lol
masterclass the video brawl deserved
Even with the sympathy directed towards Lucas in his section, I feel the downplaying comes on too strong there (to be fair, it's simply to be expected that a widely-agreed-upon low tier doesn't get that much attention, but still). A lot of Lucas' moves' attributes are good or even great. The slow smash attacks useful for reads and big punishes pair well with the much faster tilts (utilt and jab are great get-off-me options for opponents standing next to Lucas, ftilt has speed, power and decent range for a char his size and pairs well with fsmash being a slightly stronger and slower version), his aerials are glossed over in an almost insulting fashion (fair and short hop nair get some respect, but full hop dair should also be there as one of his more important moves, and uair is also a great move to have with its frame data). His recovery options completely eclipse the likes of Ness'. I am very biased as a longtime Lucas main, but I truly believe the main reason he is stuck in low tier is that singular crippling weakness to grab release setups and chaingrabs. Outside of that, Lucas' actual weaknesses are 1. certain characters having more range on their moves than him to wall him out at close quarters, 2. difficulty in covering some blind spots that opponents can approach and apply pressure from (ftilt and utilt leave a conspicuous hole for short hop approaches), and 3. difficulty retaliating out of shield, with his best OoS option being short hop nair... or just drop shield and jab?
Subbed, didn’t even watch it yet but asumsaus content on brawl is a insta-sub.
Do not compare this to AsumSaus.
@@mxtoastytoad oh come on people gotta start somewhere alr?
@@yoshitaxfraudosaurus Certainly. But my point still stands.
Lucario was favorable v Pikachu mostly because as slow as Lucario is, his slight disjoints helped a loooot in forcing Pika to needing good reads to effectively secure stocks. That and Lucario had a weird weight/fall speed combo that caused him to be unchaingrabbable to a significant amount (aside from D3 and ICs), and Aura Sphere became a big problem in this matchup. Aerial t-jolt was normally a really good button for neutral, but at around 80% on even semi-charged aura spheres will eat t-jolts and catch Pika while they're still recovering from the end lag in the air. This also exacerbates the killing problem pika has in the matchup, and it turns something that normally wins matchups on its own into a borderline liability. Also helps dair is annoying for Pikas QAC options. It's basically a bunch of little things
1:45:04 his weenuses
2:10:22 Hmm, do you guys know who @bigbangbot-SuperSqank is by chance? They've been making a series about individual moves in Smash (mostly Brawl, but they covered some 64 & Smash 4 versions of moves too), explaining *why* they're terrible, and one of those moves actually is Brawl Luigi's Dash Attack. Suffice to say, I ended up learning from that video, what I THOUGHT was Luigi's Dash Attack being fixed in Brawl due to the addition of the last hit, was very, very, VERY wrong. It's actually still terrible due to many other issues.
@@curiosityman3704 I do actually remember watching that man's video on Brawl Ganondorf's Forward Aerial while I was in the midst of editing, good shit, though I don't think I used any of his vids as footage for this video. The move is probably terrible but it certainly still is an upgrade from it's Melee iteration.
Brawl is goated. I don’t care WHAT anyone has to say otherwise. Lol. I still freaking love this game! Amazing video, guys!
100% Agree!
wait ppl still playing brawl ? 😭😭😭

Mom said it’s my turn to put on a movie
Around 27:30ish, you mention that Gatling Combo is harder to do than DACUS? I gotta disagree, Gatling has way more forgiving timing and is way easier than DACUS IMO.
@@GhabulousGhoti DACUS was dependent on every character's dash attack frame window, so yeah it is technically true to say Falco and Snakes gatlings are easier to perform than someone like Fox's since he only has a two frame window to perform his DACUS. I think it was supposed to specify more so the percentage gap you have before you can't do a proper follow up anymore (either they get launched further from the initial dash attack hitbox or they can air dodge before the followup).
@@LuigiLitoLL I gotcha, that makes sense.
1:21:51 to 1:22:01 This part elicited two different reactions out of me. One was laughing out loud, while the other was inside my head, screaming and writhing in agony and pain.
@@curiosityman3704 I don't even have to click to know what part it is lmao.
Fancy meeting you here.

Finally, the Brawl documentary.
@@Tiquono This one requiring zero donations to use for fraudulent means!
mk is not the best character in all of fighting games absolutely trolling take. The old fighting games had autowin characters in them. His weight is actually not his biggest weakness because of momentum cancelling and since he has the best frame data his weight is artificially higher than it looks. His biggest weaknesses are a lack of projectile and chain grab which is why Diddy and Icies can wreck him on stages that are legal in the latest ruleset and MK cant take them to a stage he autowins in since they're all banned now.
I think Ivan Ooze and Akuma are stronger contenders for most broken, but MK could still be considered if you account for MK's infinite Dimensional Cape stalling. Take a character with incredible neutral and a theoretical way to never lose after getting the first hit in, and I'd say that's pretty busted. Oh, and going back to some of those other broken characters, if you also consider that half of old fighting game busted characters were meant to be fanservice to arcade players, kind of an inverse to a "joke character" in being intentionally balanced a certain way. MK was just the result of "IDGAF" balancing during Sakurai's flippant streak of clashing with competitive play.
@@ph1lny3 Sure I agree. I won't consider the infinite Dimensional Cape stalling as part of MK's gameplan because it has never been legal in all of Brawl's lifespan. But MK in older rulesets where stages like Norfair and Rainbow Cruise were allowed definetely is a contender for the most broken character in all fighting games since he autowon in weird stages. Even when a player found a way to beat M2K on a starter stage he would counterpick to a jank stage and MK could not be stopped in those days. In the current ruleset without those stages though, I don't think MK has a case for the strongest fighting game character at all when zoners like Snake, zoners with infinite like Diddy, and chain grabbers like Icies can outright beat him in the neutral.
We don't need to be arguing about this because Meta Knight isn't in the fighting game genre 😂 platform fighters aren't fighting games (and that's ok and good actually)

I’m really interested in the subject matter but the audio quality on parts of this video is just near unlistenable. Love the work that you guys put into this but I was struggeling to follow some parts due to bad audio and poor script reading.
@@un1d this is the one criticism I was expecting (which is a rightful one there's no denying that). It was me and many of the others first collab project and only three of us are within the same city so mic control was something I kinda had to sort of brush off, especially since we all had different mics. I tried whatever amount of volume matching, word corrections, and ducking I could do but I knew it wasn't going to be perfect.
Love this video, one small nitpick is that I would of clarified that some of the members in the footage are not part of the community due to allegations!
Not allegations for some also if you’re here you probably already know that so a redundant point really
I know they are not allegations! I just wish the Smash Community would take more accountability when it comes to their top players and I wrote the word allegations a bit too fast
