its hardly 4wd, its is a good quality service road, we have been up there in 2wd and Subaru's etc.
Yes, a big difference from where we had been that morning and the pervious 2 days.
Cool track, be awesome on a clear day. I could smell the anti-freeze in my Surf on that climb though. Reminded me I need to chuck a new radiator in when I do the next timing belt
I got a bigger radiator put in my Surf when I had it, only cost $280 at the time.
Nice one guys. In the summer 2WD Vehicles can get up there...also never park underneath a Tower especially when there is snow about ! Big pieces of ice fall off them if its cold enough.
Wow I never thought of that, good advice thanks.
Cool always wanted to drive up there for a look how do u go about getting permission to go up? Is there a number i would need to call? Cheers
Graeme, who took us in did it with emails and phone calls to the Murchison council or Tasman District council I believe.
We went up there on dirt bikes on stinking hot day way back about in the early 90s and retired to the Owen River pub...!
Sounds good, we ended up at a hotel in St Arnaud
Cool vid , well done 👍🏻
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Welcome to the Wet coast 😂
This is amazing! Bucket list drive for me living up here in Auckland.
I hope you get to do it.
Great video. Im a landscape painter I would love to go painting through that track. Where is it?
Yes, the creek has 2 names I mention that near the end of this video. Around minute 28, Just google that and Doc. as you need the farmers details that are on the Doc website.
what's the name of the track? do you know? nice video
Yes, the creek has 2 names I mention that near the end of this video. Around minute 28, Just google that and Doc. as you need the farmers details that are on the Doc website.
How does one join the SC club I have a stock surf and want to learn a bit about 4wd and come on some cool trips
We have a membership form on face book, South Canterbury 4WD Club
Its called Corduroyed they used to build logging roads in the wet areas like that..
Thank you for that, I even googled it without success
Id like to do something like this. Is it possible to get the location ?
Yes, the creek has 2 names I mention that near the end of this video. Just google that and Doc. as you need the farmers details that are on the Doc website.
It's so common to NZ 4WD videos to not name the locations and keep everything to just yourself, disgusting.
Not correct with Neil and co they have told us where they are on their other videos I’m sure he said in the start they were told not to
By the way that looks like lake Daniell
It’s disappointing that everyone feels like they need to know the names of these tracks. They are hidden to keep them still open for the future. as soon as they are known they get closed so the best thing we can do is keep them hidden.
@@hampaice2489 I know what you mean but they are not hidden I’m in a 4wd club and they are quiet happy to tell you where they are and if you are a club member you can go on their expeditions
Is this road open to the public, or do you need specific permission to drive it. I live in the area and always want to have a look up there
@@rbdeck1 It's open to the public
What brand and type of tyres are on the BT-50 ?
Kenda Klever R/T LT285/75R16 He really likes them and will get them again.
Where is this track?
Info you are after is in my Day 3 video
The river is real low..
yes the lowest any of us have seen it.
Where's the sc club located?
It's The South Canterbury 4 Wheel Drive Club, so we are located in Timaru. We have a face book page for more info.
Awesome video. Track looked fairly easy at the beginning, then that last bit through the bush looked like fun
Yes it gets tight and the end, especially with me not going straight through the bog hole I got stuck in 2 years ago.
Fellow Surf owner here, how do you reckon the Fortuner compares? Modern equivalent? Another great video by the way. Love this stuff.
Ground clearance was a little better in the Surf, there is some low hanging suspension swing arms on the Fortuner the Surf didn't have. That must make the on the road ride better. Cost of maintenance was getting up there on the Surf. The traction control is great, rear diff lock too. The cameras help both off road and car parks etc. Active cruise control and the extra safety features plus the automatic make the Fortuner a must for me with it being my daily driver. Sorted the front plastic with the bull bar as I wanted a winch. Don't know about the rear plastic yet, I have pop it out on one side 3 times now.
Hi Neil, what camera do you use? It’s a good picture
GoPro 11 in the car.
great video Neil
It was a great trip Wayne, I should have day 2 out next week. That was real fun even in the rain.
What an awesome track!! That's somewhere I would take the wife to introduce her to 4WDing. There are a few challenging bits that gradually get harder-mostly just water and creek banks-but no MASSIVE boulders and "no edges" (she's not scared of heights - just edges), fairly flat track-yet still enough for her to appreciate the location and think her car would never get us there, perfect for her to the appreciate investment I/we have put into our truck. That's the perfect track to break the wife in! Awesome video - thank you!!
Yes its a great track, I did get some deep scratches with it being tight.
Good video . Might need some editing to remove some repeats . Great track
Thanks for that, I got rid one it will take time to update but was a bad mistake and I needed to know so again thank you.
A superb video. Thanks for sharing it with us. Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice little set up. Been thinking of doing the same, but it's a bit of a fiddle with a short wheel base Prado
If you by yourself take passenger seat out
@@lesmondk3376 yes true. Being over six foot means I need the whole length of the passenger cabin. Got an idea just needed to try it out
@shorty9055 I should of said front passenger seat me mate had a shorty Land Cruiser and he was tall as it worked out good
@@lesmondk3376 cheers thanks for that
hey mate, great video! Can you tell me what tyres does the Navara has, please?
Kenda Klever R/T LT285/75R16 He really likes them and will get them again.
Another great vid. Thanks for sharing. Wouldn't mind joining you guys for a trip once I fix up a few things on my cruiser. We've got some bloody nice scenery around, need to get out more and enjoy it!
Sounds good. South Canterbury 4WD Club has a face book page with a Membership form on it. Subs are $40, and the main thing your vehicle needs is rated recovery points front and back. We have a meeting at the Speights Ale House in Timaru on the first Tuesday of every even month at 7;30 pm eg Oct, Dec, Feb. all welcome.
Beautiful spot. Unfortunately there is a lot of damage occurring from idiots in 4wds. You guys seem to be responsible enough.
Yes a beautiful spot made more special with the snow.
Thanks for the video Neil. Awesome little trip, one to add to my trip list when I get down to the South Island
Thanks for watching and it is a quick drive for a awesome view
Thanks Neil, Great watch while having my breakfast this morning, looked a nice clear day up there and great views. Thanks for the ride along. Also interesting watching your diff lock vs no diff lock test and great that you advocate being respectful in these areas in terms of access etc, Thanks👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Rode my e bike up last yr , pretty cool veiws
I bet the brakes got hot on the trip down.
Nice work Neil. You lucked on an excellent day for the views.
Yes it was!
Nice views
Thanks
on a good day I reckon the corolla would handle this
With some friends to help you out a Corolla would be fun
Hi Neil love the scenery in this video with the snow up the valley. Enjoyed the ride along making your way towards and over Burkes Pass. The drone footage and just stunning and a great Birds Eye view of your crew on the trip. Loved it!!
Thanks Julia
so you didnt pay your $20? Robyn and Malcolm put alot of effort into keeping the track safe and open not to mention that if you have a mishap its them that come to the rescue, as you say its one of the best tracks around here
The first time I went though there was though their land and Malcolm showed us around, the history and maps etc. This was a last-minute thing finding the bridge was easy, I would need an address for the farm and I wanted to drive both ways though the tunnels so I just stayed on the DOC track. Next time I will see Robyn and Malcolm and get the map and explore the aera more and check out the tunnels you can walk in.
I was watching the maculy hut one
I see what I’ve done, I was watching another one of yours
@@gdog1443 That's good, it helps the algorithms.
Have you edited this? I’m sure I watched this the other day and you went right to the hut and had a bbq and showed the inside of the hut
No, it's not been edited. Red stag hut is at the 29-minute mark.
Red stag hut is on our menu when we head down
Thats good and don't forget the Macaulay that's a really good hut to stay the night in.
@@realneilsadventures yeah we went to Macaulay last summer just ran out of time but we intend staying south a lot longer this coming summer
Sounds good
So glad I found your channel mate. I'm loving these videos. Yeah the little Mitsubishi L300. Coping well with all that. I've got an L400, I love it!!!! I need to join a club so I can explore with a little more confidence, and enjoy these epic views first hand.
The L 300 does all the tracks we do. Joining the club taught me where I can go 4WDriving.
Perfect day Neil, great scenery, well done.
Thanks Graeme, you don't get that sort of 4WD run in Oz.
I dont know if its the snow hiding the features (rocks) but that looked an easier drive than up to Mcauley
Yes, the snow made it a lot easier drive. But also the fact that the river level was so low.
im subscribed,, we did that track 10 years ago it’s a good drive to a n awesome place
Yes it was a great track a few years ago, but now the river has moved more to the true left you can only go up there when the river is low.
AWESOME!!!!! Just awesome. What a beautiful day. What amazing scenery. New subscriber here!!!!
Thanks for subscribing, It was a great day out.
I know its snow and boys were having fun but do we really need advertise that online in a video… when there big movement to get people to behave in the backcountry…. Places getting destroyed and if they watch someone else do it they think its okay type thing
Also prob be carefull using your drone in youtube videos and saying the locations…. DOC having crack down on unpermited drone use
I am trying to encourage people to join clubs where there is training and controlled conditions, so I thought showing what just happened naturally on a snow covered river bed would show you can have fun in clubs.
I will pass this information to the operator
do you think you could get to the true right of the valley since the river moved looks a lot more spread out than it used to be
Yes, I know someone who went up that side last summer.
It looked very different back in Oct 1993.
Yes, the DOC track would have been pretty good back then.
