Head Sculpting with Sculptris (roughing out the beginning stages)
Просмотров 44Год назад
This is a head I sculpted In a very short time using the Sculptris 3d modeling application (Pixologic). The app is free and quite intuitive. As a tradional professional sculptor it is amazing how much it resembles sculpting wiht modeling clay. The video is in real time so I guess it took a little over 10 minutes to get this far. From here there are obvious corrections I would make, including so...

An experiment in Sculpris...created a head from imagination
Просмотров 35Год назад
This is the result of experimenting with Sculpris, a free app (or at least it was) which I think is an offshoot from Z brush, 3d modeling app.As a traditional sculptor accustomed to modeling and carving there are features very similar to what I know and others which are quite alienating.
Fur Elise by Beethoven (almost)
Просмотров 37Год назад
After several hundred attemps I finally more or less learned the first few bars of Beethoven's "Fur Elise". Played on my $115 Donner 61 key keyboard piano. Don't know where the annoying background sounds are coming from. They are only on the recording. Check out the source teacher I used, Dr Steve Warner. Many videos on his channel Incidentally, yesterday, after seven months of playing, the C n...

Third Dinghy Build Part 2
Просмотров 523 года назад
This is my 7 plus foot dinghy at the stage just before painting. Unfortunately the winter is closing in here in Maine and I will have to cover it up and wait for Spring to finish it. It has been fun (except for the fiberglassing) and in the future I will just tape the seams and use good marine plywood and paint. The $22 a sheet plywood I used seems well made. I had a piece floating in my backya...

Clock Escape Mechanisms
Просмотров 37 тыс.4 года назад
A very short video of a couple of clock escape mechanisms I made a few years ago. Just experimental as a by-product to my long time interest in clocks. Something about a clock..."like a clock ticking in a thunderstorm" I read somewhere...the order, the calm, the sense of logic when the world seems anything but.
The Sea Never Changes...

This video was made yesterday (March 24, 2020). It was the day after a storm and the seas were still high. It reminded me of the Joseph Conrad quote: "The seas never changes and its' works, for all the talk of men, are wrapped in mystery". My apologies for the inexpert videography and the spot on the right side of the screen. Making movies is not my day job, in fact, I don't have one.

      Hi Sam, sorry I had not checked this site sooner. The plans are from Howard Chapelle's American Sailing ships, if I remember correctly. In any case it would either be that or The Search for Speed under Sail, same author. I simply photocopied the plans and blew them up to the desired size. You can paste them together if you don't have a larger print capability. Some times I just make a same size copy and bring it to a local print establishment where they can usually enlarge them for a pretty reasonable fee. Hope this helps.

    I'm impressed that you made an ink plate from scratch, and the linkage that moves the roller arms. Looks like you could straighten that roller linkage just a little - the roller usually travels further up the ink plate. See my video at about 10:10 to see this same press in action: ruclips.net/video/6gQasrMBALA/видео.html (BTW, the "platen" is the place on the press where the paper goes.)

    • @edwardmaterson3646
      @edwardmaterson3646 3 года назад

      JIm: Yes, you are correct about the terminology. Don't know why I referred to it as a "platen" since I am well aware of the usual reference to that part. I had to experiment with the linkage and was aware that it could be better but just felt I had invested enough time. I had no part to replicate so had to use trial and error. Anyone with machine tools could do a better job of course. Anyway, thanks for your interest.

    So the lifts have to be planed/thicknessed to represent the scale distance between the water lines on the plans? Have I got that right? Great video and model thanks.

    • @edwardmaterson3646
      @edwardmaterson3646 3 года назад

      Yes. Not having a thickness planeer I use 3/4" stock lumber. It is possible to create your own lift lines but takes a bit of work. Since you have the coordinates of the half breadth and the station lines you can bend a batten along the appropriate points and create new lift lines.

    Thanks so much for this video, Edward! After having purchased our first wood boat last year (1984 Skiff Craft) I'm planning to make half hulls of our boat and the 1955 Chris Craft Commander my grandfather owned. It's one thing to read about how to make a half hull, but another thing entirely to see a master like you at work. Thank you for taking the time to explain the art of making half hulls and for helping another generation keep such a beautiful tradition alive.

    • @edwardmaterson3646
      @edwardmaterson3646 4 года назад

      Shawna: You can create a full model hull if you can make a half-hull model. All it takes is to flip the patterns and use wider stock. If you trace an innere profile on each template and cut along those lines you can create a hollow full hull. Christopher Hale has a video on his full models and there are many others. Also, Dover books puts out a few reasonably priced books on model making. Harold Payson has an excellent book on model making but he had a full boat-making shop and many of the tools few people own. You can do it though with the simplest tools a jigsaw (hand) costs less than $10 at some stores Chisels should be the best quality but you can get by with one or two. Hope this helps.

    • @edwardmaterson3646

    I guess the same method can be used for a full hull model except you do two sides.

    • @edwardmaterson3646
      @edwardmaterson3646 5 лет назад

      Thomas: Yes, the same method can be used juste by flipping the templates of the "lifts" and tracing the mirror image onto your stock. Also, to create a hollow model, draw parallel lines an inch or two inside each lift profile (enough to leave room for glueing the lifts together).
